Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768. A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year. 2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
Last year, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes is set to be run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty.
2023 also saw Frankie Dettori wave farewell to Royal Ascot in unforgettable style, winning the Gold Cup on-board Courage Mon Ami for his 79th winner at the Royal Meeting. He would add two more victories that week before leaving to ride in the USA at the end of the year
This year, prize money at the Royal Meeting reaches eight figures with the total fund across all 35 races in excess of £10 million, an increase of more than 5% on 2023’s figures. With eight Group 1 races and a total of 22 Pattern or Listed level events throughout the five days, Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the world.

Welcoming our Local Community
As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, last year we launched a dedicated schools viewing and picnic area on Ascot Heath to celebrate the Coronation year. For 2024, we have increased the capacity and today are delighted to welcome 500 students who will be able to enjoy a front row view of the Royal Procession. The children can also experience a race at Ascot with our virtual reality and mechanical horse activity.
This initiative forms part of our wider schools’ engagement programme which includes annual art, fashion, photography and baking competitions, in addition to career talks and history tours.
Today, we look forward to welcoming 500 residents from our local community who were successful in the annual local resident ticket ballot to win a pair of Queen Anne Enclosure tickets.

The Windsor Castle Stakes Presentation by Mr Mark Johnston
Mark Johnston is one of Britain’s leading trainers, having become the first Flat trainer to send out more than 200 winners in a season (2009). He reached his 4,000th winner in 2017 and is only the third trainer in either code to do so. In 2018 Johnston became the most successful British Flat trainer of all time when Frankie Dettori rode Poet’s Society at York and in August 2022 took that number to 5,000 when Dubai Mile won at Kempton Park. In January 2022 Johnston’s son and assistant, Charlie, joined him as joint training licence holder, with the pair being responsible for 176 winners that year. In December 2022 Mark announced that he would step down, leaving Charlie as the sole trainer with himself as assistant trainer, stressing that he was not retiring and the partnership would continue as before.
Race Histories
2.30pm The Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)
Named after the consort of King George V, this race was first run in 1921. The Queen Mary Stakes is the first major race of the season exclusively for two-year-old fillies. Run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and promoted to Group 2 status in 2004, it provides a useful opportunity to assess their ability and potential to perform at Group 1 level. American trainer Wesley Ward has an exceptional record in the race having saddled the winner four times since 2009, including most recently with Campanelle in 2020.
3.05pm The Queen’s Vase (Group 2)
Promoted to Group 2 in 2017, the race was named to honour Queen Victoria and first run in 1838. This race became the King’s Vase in 1903 and reverted to its original name of the Queen’s Vase on the succession of Queen Elizabeth II. Run over a-mile-and-three-quarters, this contest provides a test of stamina for three-year-olds and winners of the race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years. Estimate, owned by Queen Elizabeth II, and star stayer Stradivarius are the most recent Queen’s Vase winners (2012 and 2017 respectively) to win the historic Gold Cup in subsequent seasons.
3.45pm The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2)
Run as the Windsor Forest Stakes until 2013, this race was a new addition to the Royal Meeting in 2004 and part of an industry-wide initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training. It is open only to fillies and mares aged four and over. As a Group 2 race, Group 1 winners carry a penalty, so the option of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, where no penalties are carried, is still open to the very best fillies.
4.25pm The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1) (British Champion Series)
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, first run at Royal Ascot in 1862, is named after the son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII). Originally staged over a mile and five furlongs, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics. There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969, then it was reintroduced and the distance changed to one mile and two furlongs. In 2000, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes was upgraded to Group 1 status and restricted to four-year-olds and upwards. The race is now worth £1 million in prize money and is one of the features of the week.
5.05pm
The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)
The Royal Hunt Cup always provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting as a maximum field thunders up Ascot’s Straight Mile course for one of the biggest betting races of the season. First run in 1843, it was originally staged over seven furlongs and 155 yards. The current distance of a mile was established in 1955 when the Straight course was realigned as part of the previous redevelopment.
5.40pm
The Kensington Palace Stakes (Class 2 Handicap)
A new handicap introduced for the first time in 2021 to be run over the Old Mile for four-year-old and upwards fillies and mares. Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens, has been a residence for members of the Royal Family since the 17th century. The inaugural winner was Lola Showgirl, a first Royal Ascot winner for trainer David Loughnane and jockey Laura Pearson.
6.15pm
The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed)
First run in 1839 over the Straight Mile course, this race was originally designed to attract three-year-old colts and fillies that had competed in the early season Classics. It is now run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and restricted to two-year-olds. The 2020 renewal was won by Tactical for Queen Elizabeth II, a home bred son of Toronado Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by James Doyle, he was Queen Elizabeth II’s 24th and final winner at the Royal Meeting.
A Heroes’ Welcome
SUPPORTING EVERY MEMBER OF THE MILITARY FAMILY
Ascot Racecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single service Armed Forces charities to Royal Ascot, namely the Army Benevolent Fund, the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
Each charity works tirelessly to support military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s help.
Our long-term support of the charities includes a donation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during Royal Ascot, which over the past seven years has totalled more than £282,000. This includes a percentage of sales donated from on-site concessionaires and bucket collections. In addition, we provide 2-for-1 ticket offers for all serving military and a dedicated Armed Forces Bar for those in attendance.
The charities are our official bucket collectors today and you will see many of their volunteers across the site. Please donate if you are able.
We thank you for your support.

My First Royal Ascot Winner: Mick Appleby
Spend a few minutes in the company of trainer Mick Appleby and you are left in no doubt just how much his first Royal Ascot winner last year with Big Evs meant to him.
It had been quite a journey to the Windsor Castle Stakes for the boy from Barnsley but one with potential to get even better given Big Evs went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in California in November to give Rutland-based Appleby his first Group 1 race success.
Appleby said, “It is still sometimes quite hard to believe what happened. A Royal Ascot winner was something we’d always wanted. We have had placed horses there and been successful at the track, including at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup meeting. But we had never had a winner at the Royal Meeting.
“To go on and be successful at Glorious Goodwood as well – we had never had a winner there either – and then top it off with the win at the Breeders’ Cup, days like those make all the hard work worth it.”
Appleby’sjoy wasshared by the sport becausethe Big Evs story was also compelling and poignant.
Owner Paul Teasdale, who had only just begun supporting Appleby following the retirement
By Marcus Townendof his previous trainer Les Eyre, had named the son of three-time Royal Ascot winner Blue Point after his larger-than-life pal of 40 years Paul Evans, who died of lung cancer six months before the Royal Ascot success.
Some of the sport’s biggest operations dangled their cheque books in front of Teasdale and started talking telephone numbers when Big Evs started winning but none could tempt the owner to part with the horse of a lifetime he was so emotionally connected to.
Big Evs had only been in Appleby’s stable for a few weeks when he told Teasdale that he had unearthed a gold nugget
Appleby recalled: “We have never really had too many two-year-olds but as soon as we started working Big Evs we knew he was something special. No other two-year-old in the yard could go with him.
“He had to work with good older horses –the likes of Raasel and Annaf – after a month when we started doing proper work with him.
“We thought he’d win on his Redcar debut but on the day if you were drawn stands side you had no chance whatsoever. He had to cut across and do a lot of work early on which probably cost him the race.
“We did fancy him going into Ascot but there was no pressure. It wasn’t like he was favourite. He’d been written off as a no-hoper but I had a little bet on him at 50-1.
“When you watch the Windsor Castle Stakes back he is up near the front all the time but the commentator didn’t pick him up until half-way. He didn’t give us a mention but it was just amazing watching it.”
If the Big Evs story seems unlikely, Appleby’s stretches credulity to its limits. His publican grandfather had taken him racing to Doncaster and Pontefract as a kid so, bereft of ideas what to do when he left school and only weighing seven stone, he went to jockey school.
Even then Appleby knew that it was training racehorses rather than riding them that interested him so he worked for a clutch of trainers including Roger Curtis and the eccentric John Manners with a plan in his mind.
He said: “I thought I would work for as many trainers as I could and I don’t think I stayed with any trainer more than two years. People thought it was because I couldn’t hold a job but I wanted to try to pick things up from them all.”
But when he first dipped his toe in the training water, it was a sobering experience.“I was based near Stratford in a small yard We had bad horses and no facilities. One of our main gallops was on a grass verge by the side of the road. We couldn’t make it pay. ”
What followed for Appleby was a spell as head lad to Andrew Balding and even, when feeling sour about racing, a stint running his father’s bar in Ibiza before the lure of the sport proved too much and he was tempted back.
There were still bumps in the road but Appleby has risen through the ranks in the ultimate results business by successfully trading in the most important currency in racing – winners
His stable is full with 105 horses and Big Evs’ successes have resulted in Arab owners joining his list of patrons for the first time after being sent three yearlings by Rabbah Bloodstock.
As for Big Evs, a return to Royal Ascot was the target from the start of the season.
He made a successful reappearance in the Westow Stakes at York, and yesterday he ran with credit in the King Charles III Stakes to finish a close-up third behind Australian mare Asfoora.
Said Appleby: “He has run very well. He showed a lot of speed early on and the stiff finish just caught up with him in the last 100 yards. He’s taking on the older horses, the best sprinters in the world, and he’s held his own against them He’s only going to improve on that as he gets older. He is rapid and he’s better on a quicker five, so we’ll possibly go back to Goodwood, and then hopefully back to the Breeders’ Cup.”
An exciting future for the speedy colt who has made so many unforgettable memories already.

Feature Race Analysis
Shadwell Estate Company Ltd are highly represented again with Alflaila after superstar Mostahdaf cruised to victory last year. The son of Dark Angel will love the rapid ground but was no match for the well-fancied Auguste Rodin in the Irish Champion Stakes last term over this trip. Aidan O’Brien’s superstar hasn’t seen success this year but looks a class act of the field and will be hard to stop if putting his best foot forward. Stable also saddle outsider Hans Andersen.
Globetrotting Lord North won this contest in 2020 and will be bidding to add another to John and Thady Gosden’s impressive record here. At the age of 8 however, he will need to roll back the years. Royal Rhyme completed the task at hand in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes to defy the short odds but struggled over course and distance in the Champion Stakes and is best watched today.
It looked as though Inspiral would be heading to yesterday’s Queen Anne Stakes but connections have decided to switch routes at the last minute. She receives the handy allowance along with the other classy filly Blue Rose Cen. Horizon Dore is a well-fancied rival but he seems to do his best work on softer ground. He would still be preferred from the other two international runners Zarakem and Snobbish in a well anticipated renewal.
Retraining of Racehorses Donation
This year, as part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted that for every race our Racing Ambassador, Ryan Moore, wins during Royal Ascot, we will donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses, British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
David Catlow, Retraining of Racehorses Managing Director, said, “We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen RoR as a nominated charity for this year’s Royal Ascot. RoR’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses for life, and we cannot do it without the vital and very generous support of organisations such as Ascot Racecourse.
“It promises to be a very exciting Royal Ascot for RoR. With each winner ridden by the brilliant Ryan Moore raising funds for RoR, we will certainly be cheering him on from the sidelines.”
Ryan Moore, added “I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Ascot Racecourse Supports and to help with the work it does in the community Hopefully, I can raise a bit of money at the Royal Meeting for an important cause in Retraining of Racehorses.”
We wish Ryan the best of luck with his 7 rides today:

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Race Summary:
In a wide-open affair where a case can be made for many, the tentative vote goes to TRULY ENCHANTING. It was a testament to her ability that she was able to get off the mark after looking green on her debut at Tipperary last month and, with the promise of more to come on forecast better ground, a bold bid is anticipated for the in-form Aidan O’Brien team. American raider Ultima Grace impressed with the way she went about her business when scoring first time out over an extended 4f at Keeneland in April, setting brisk fractions before asserting close home, and she is respected for a trainer who has tasted success in this race four times. Impressive debut winners Make Haste and Spherical are a couple of others who merit consideration in what is sure to be an informative contest.

Race Summary:
With four of the last nine winners trained by Aidan O’Brien and winning favourites in both 2022 and 2023, there is a lot to like about the chances of HIGHBURY, who heads the early markets. Third on his debut, he showed the benefit of that experience when running away with a Leopardstown maiden by over seven lengths after showing a decent turn of foot when asked. The son of Galileo may reverse debut form with the unbeaten Birdman here, though that cannot be guaranteed and Jessica Harrington’s Free Eagle gelding looks a worthy adversary who cannot be ignored. Mina Rashid is an outsider to consider after he stayed on strongly to win his maiden at Chester and appeals as having further improvement to come as a stayer.

Race Summary:
Laurel has her first start since disappointing in last year’s Lockinge. She won a Listed contest at Kempton under Ryan Moore before that, but has something to prove on her reappearance and OCEAN JEWEL is preferred. The latter looked an improved filly when winning a Group 2 contest at the Curragh last month with plenty left in the tank, and further improvement looks on the cards. Rogue Millennium won this last year and has joined Joseph O’Brien subsequently. She was no match for the selection when sent off favourite at the Curragh, though she may finish closer on this occasion. Breege accounted for Royal Dress and Running Lion when landing a Group 3 at Epsom, but would prefer some cut in the ground, while William Buick picks up the ride on the Irish filly and Group 3 winner Gregarina and she could go well.

Race Summary:
Six-time Group 1 winner Inspiral took the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf over this trip and she now has another crack at it after her below-par fourth in the Lockinge at Newbury last month. The daughter of Frankel boasts leading credentials, but Kieran Shoemark will have to navigate a path from a tricky draw in stall 10. With that in mind, the vote goes to AUGUSTE RODIN. Aidan O’Brien’s colt had a good prep run for this contest when filling the runner-up spot in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last time and he took the Irish Champion Stakes over this distance in September last year The 2023 dual Derby hero has proven his versatility in regards to distance at the top level and he could prove very hard to beat. Royal Rhyme took the Brigadier Gerard in preparation for a tilt at this prestigious prize and he may run better than his odds suggest.

Reserves At Royal Ascot
The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.
Today’s race with a reserve running is The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)CRACK SHOT
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse.

Race Summary:
Wathnan Racing look to hold a strong hand in this contest and James Doyle presumably prefers BESHTANI to Real Gain. Having shown smart form in France, the selection was making his UK debut when finishing an excellent second behind a subsequent winner over an extended mile at Epsom last month. The handicapper left him on the same mark and this four-year-old son of Siyouni can make amends for that near-miss. Wild Tiger did it well when scoring readily over 7f in a Goodwood handicap most recently and he warrants respect despite being upped 6lb. Last year’s fourth, Aerion Power, looks primed for another prominent showing despite the burden of a 5lb penalty for winning at Nottingham earlier this month, while a truly-run race with a stiff finish can suit Dutch Decoy and he could earn himself a spot on the podium.

The Kensington Palace Stakes (Class 2) -
Race Summary:
Summer Of Love heads the early markets after Saeed bin Suroor’s Dark Angel filly scored comfortably enough on her return at Kempton and, with an opening handicap mark of 88, she can go well with a clear run, but Irish raider ADELAISE is still preferred. A little unlucky when short of room before finishing fourth here last year, she won the Listed Snowdrop Stakes at Kempton in April beating the 100-rated Choisya by a head, suggesting a mark of 98 here is workable. She looks as if she stays further so a fast-run mile could be ideal and, with William Buick booked to ride, she appears to have every chance. Villanova Queen won this last year and returns to handicap company boasting a chance, along with the lightly-raced pair Fakhama and Doha.

Race Summary:
Wathnan Racing might have another useful one on their hands with SHADOW ARMY, who overcame inexperience to defeat subsequent Listed winner Francisco’s Piece at York on his debut. Richard Fahey’s yard has hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks and he could continue that trend, but Aidan O’Brien knows what it takes to land this contest and his pair Treasure Isle and Celtic Chieftain must be feared. Pont Neuf made it two from two when winning at Salisbury last month and he is another who looks more than capable at this higher level. There is no shortage of an American challenge with the likes of Gabaldon and Honorary American taking their chance, and the former, who made a successful debut at Gulfstream last month, rates the pick of them.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:
•The Queen Anne Stakes
•The King Charles III Stakes
•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
•The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Last year Valiant Force, winner of the Norfolk Stakes, took up that invitation and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind fellow Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, who was victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In fact four of the first six in that race ran at the Royal Meeting, including Queen Mary Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and No Nay Mets, who was fifth in the Norfolk Stakes
Meanwhile Warm Heart, who won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year, went on to be second in the Filly & Mare Turf behind Inspiral, herself a runner-up here last June. There continues to be a strong line of correlation between success at Royal Ascot and taking that form to the Breeders’ Cup.
Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot last year, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Singing around the Bandstand
Racegoers in the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to join in with the unmissable singing around the bandstand after racing from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal sing-along that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, My Way, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Scots Guards who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2024 and John Park who will be leading the singing.
