Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768. A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year. 2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
Last year, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes is set to be run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty.
2023 also saw Frankie Dettori wave farewell to Royal Ascot in unforgettable style, winning the Gold Cup on-board Courage Mon Ami for his 79th winner at the Royal Meeting. He would add two more victories that week before leaving to ride in the USA at the end of the year
This year, prize money at the Royal Meeting reaches eight figures with the total fund across all 35 races in excess of £10 million, an increase of more than 5% on 2023’s figures. With eight Group 1 races and a total of 22 Pattern or Listed level events throughout the five days, Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the world.

Singing around the Bandstand
Racegoers in the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to join in with the unmissable singing around the bandstand after racing from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal sing-along that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, My Way, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Scots Guards who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2024 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Race Histories
2.30pm The Albany Stakes (Group 3)
This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring the former racing manager of Queen Elizabeth II, and proved so successful that it was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong event provides one of the first opportunities of the season for promising types to prove their ability and go on to harbour Guineas aspirations.
3.05pm The Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
The Commonwealth Cup was a completely new race in 2015 and joined the King’s Stand Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes to become the third Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot. The race, run over six furlongs, is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies and was put in place as a Europe-wide measure to create a better Pattern for young sprinters and improve the quality of sprint races across the continent. Several races in the run up to the Commonwealth Cup were promoted in tandem, including the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot, in April to Group 3. The 2019 renewal of the Commonwealth Cup, won by Advertise, was the joint highest rated three-year-old race in the world.
3.45pm The Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
First run in 1840 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Victoria two years previously, the Coronation Stakes is for three-year-old fillies and regularly attracts the winners of the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. It has also started to attract some of the top American fillies and so is a race that acts to crown the best of that year’s Classic generation over a mile. It was promoted to Group 1 level in 1988 and in recent years the likes of Sky Lantern, Winter, Alpha Centauri and Tahiyra have won one of the 1,000 Guineas races before following up in the Coronation Stakes.
4.25pm The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)
Originally the Bessborough Stakes, named after the fifth Earl of Bessborough, who was Master of the Buckhounds between 1848 and 1866, the race was renamed the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes in 1999. First run in 1914 as a five-furlong event for two-year-olds, it has now evolved into a middle-distance handicap for three-year-olds and upward.
5.05pm
The Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)
Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was renamed after the Norfolk royal residence when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. This is a competitive handicap over a mile, limited to three-year-old fillies only.
5.40pm
The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)
Formerly known, and still colloquially referred to as the Ascot Derby, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926, it is now restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings. Three of the most recent winners, Japan, Pyledriver and Alenquer, all went on to Group 1 success.
6.15pm
The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)
The final race on Friday was among six prizes added to the Royal Ascot race programme in 2020. A five-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race name, which recognises the Monarchy’s official Scottish residence. A race with similar conditions used to be run regularly on the Saturday Heath Day card and featured as part of the full Royal Ascot programme in 2002 and 2003 as the Balmoral Handicap Upon its return in 2020, it was won by Art Power who went on to win a Group 3 at Naas before contesting the major Group 1 sprints later in the season.

Retraining of Racehorses Donation
This year, as part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted that for every race our Racing Ambassador, Ryan Moore, wins during Royal Ascot, we will donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses, British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
David Catlow, Retraining of Racehorses Managing Director, said, “We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen RoR as a nominated charity for this year’s Royal Ascot. RoR’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses for life, and we cannot do it without the vital and very generous support of organisations such as Ascot Racecourse.
“It promises to be a very exciting Royal Ascot for RoR. With each winner ridden by the brilliant Ryan Moore raising funds for RoR, we will certainly be cheering him on from the sidelines.”
Ryan Moore, added “I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Ascot Racecourse Supports and to help with the work it does in the community Hopefully, I can raise a bit of money at the Royal Meeting for an important cause in Retraining of Racehorses.”

A Heroes’ Welcome
SUPPORTING EVERY MEMBER OF THE MILITARY FAMILY
Ascot Racecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single service Armed Forces charities to Royal Ascot, namely the Army Benevolent Fund, the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
Each charity works tirelessly to support military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s help.
Our long-term support of the charities includes a donation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during Royal Ascot, which over the past seven years has totalled more than £282,000. This includes a percentage of sales donated from on-site concessionaires and bucket collections. In addition, we provide 2-for-1 ticket offers for all serving military alongside a dedicated Armed Forces Bar for those in attendance.
The charities are our official bucket collectors today and you will see many of their volunteers across the site. Please donate if you are able.
We thank you for your support.
Army Benevolent Fund - Steve’s story
Steve was 19 years old when he was badly wounded in a bomb explosion in Belfast whilst serving with The Royal Anglian Regiment. His right leg was blown off and his wounded left leg was later amputated below the knee; the explosion also caused the loss of his right eye. He spent time recovering and rehabilitating in various hospitals, including the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital Woolwich. Once back home, ABF provided support for a new ramp so that Steve could exit his bungalow kitchen area more easily. This work has made a massive difference, giving Steve his independence back.

Doyle’s Royal Ascot Ascent
The spectacular story of Hollie’s groundbreaking Group 1 victory
Every year, Royal Ascot creates extraordinary memories, delivers captivating moments, and pushes the boundaries of both human and equine achievement. In 2023, Hollie Doyle took triumph at the Royal Meeting to an unprecedented level. Bradsell’s victory in the King’s Stand Stakes saw Doyle become the first female jockey to ride a Group 1 winner at the summer showpiece. A memory treasured, a glass ceiling shattered – and a dream fulfilled.
In an exclusive interview with Ascot ahead of the Royal Meeting, Hollie shared just how much she treasures that triumph.
“We ride at Ascot all year round but there’s nothing like Royal Ascot week. It’s our Olympics, that equivalent for jockeys and trainers. We’re always looking for the next superstar to bring us here, it’s the place we all want to be. It’s a big occasion, not only does the jockey feel the atmosphere but the horse does as well.
“Bradsell loves it here at Ascot, he won here as a two-year-old. He just travelled so amazingly. I asked him the question a long way out and
he did it well. He’s such a talented horse When you get a horse that loves it here, they are so effective on this track.
“On the day I was just delighted as a jockey to ride a Group 1 winner The female thing didn’t really play on my mind at all, in ten or twenty years nobody can take that away from me, but as a jockey, a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot is pretty high on the list.”
It’s been a long time coming for Doyle, who was born into a racing family with both parents having ridden for a living. Pony riding soon turned to horse riding for Hollie, who started as an amateur jockey before becoming an apprentice in 2014. But the path to greatness was not an easy one.
“I was left to my own accord to make my own decisions or mistakes. I had no interest in school, I just wanted to get home and get on the back of a horse!
“There were times when I struggled, I went three years only riding six winners, then I made the move to Richard Hannon’s and I was at a point where I thought ‘if I don’t make it here, I’m not good enough’. That was tough. If I hadn’t had that chance then I wouldn’t be anywhere.”
It’s not just at the Royal Meeting that Doyle has shone at Ascot. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup offers a unique team-based competition with one team composed entirely of female jockeys The Ladies team have won the competition in three of the last five years, with Doyle winning the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle award for top jockey in 2023.
“The Shergar Cup is really popular, I’ve been lucky enough to do it a few times now and won the Silver Saddle last year. It’s a very chilled atmosphere, it’s really good fun and nice to have a bit of competition as a team.”
But Doyle isn’t resting on her laurels, seeing plenty more opportunities to shine whilst in the prime of her career.
“I don’t think it will sink in until the end of my career, what I’ve done, because at the moment it’s insignificant to me, because I’m still going forward, I’ve got so many more goals. I’m still improving as a rider, I’m always trying to be better, I know I can compete at the top level with the other jockeys, which is satisfying. You just have to keep looking for the opportunities.
“A few years ago, if you had asked me if I saw myself as a role model, I would have said no But over the last year or two, I’ve been noticing that a lot of young girls or kids in the pony club have been taking a liking to me, sending me loads of messages or following me on social media, so I do see it as a responsibility to set a good example. Our sport is so open and anyone can get involved, so I feel a bit of responsibility to sell the sport as a whole.”
It hasn’t always been this way for Doyle, or other female jockeys. But in recent years, records have tumbled and the opportunities have continued to come – with countless achievements on the track justifying the continued push for equality within the sport.
“I think the vision of female jockeys has changed thanks to the likes of Hayley Turner, Gay Kelleway, Rachael Blackmore, Nina Carberry, those girls riding over jumps have proven it. For me, the moment Rachael crossed the line in the Grand National I thought ‘conversation over’, but it’s alright for me to say because I’ve had a pretty easy go of things. People like Hayley, Cathy Gannon, and others before me have had it a lot tougher.”
A trail blazer and a record breaker, just like the countless other women that have come before her and continue to fly the flag for female success. Long live the Queens of the Turf.

Feature Race Analysis
QIPCO 1000 Guineas heroine Elmalka will aim to give Roger Varian further Royal Ascot glory as she bids to win another Group 1. The three-year-old just denied the strong challenge of Albany Stakes winner Porta Fortuna (second), Ramatuelle (third) and See The Fire in the Newmarket fillies Classic and the quartet go head-to-head again today.
Aidan O’Brien is no stranger to success in this race having landed it in 2017. Today he saddles two in Content and the well-fancied Opera Singer who currently heads the market after a good third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, finishing ahead of rival again today Skellet. Shock French 1,000 Guineas winner Rouhiya is among the vast amount of International runners we have seen throughout the week and will be partnered by her regular rider Maxime Guyon.
The unbeaten Devoted Queen steps up in grade after a beautiful performance at York and she could be worth chancing to improve again in these deeper waters. Folgaria made a successful start to life for Marco Botti when marginally landing the Fred Darling on stable debut. There could be more to come from the bright filly returning to quicker ground.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Race Summary:
Aidan O’Brien plays a strong hand as he bids for a third success in this race. While Heavens Gate is notable after breezing through a Curragh maiden last month, it is hard to look beyond FAIRY GODMOTHER as the stable’s best hope. Despite finding one too good when running green on debut at Naas, the daughter of Night Of Thunder reversed the form with the winner of that race, producing a power-packed finish in a Group 3 at the same venue last month. It has been all systems go at Ballydoyle for this since. The unbeaten Mountain Breeze can give the selection most to think about after a brace of novice wins at Newmarket Hot Darling, a Listed scorer in France, and maiden winners Liberalised and Twafeeg appeal as each-way hopes

Race Summary:
After a ready success in the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes on his previous outing, JASOUR can continue his upward trajectory and land a first Group 1. Clive Cox saddled Golden Horde to land this prize in 2020 and this son of Havana Grey can give him a second success in the race. Inisherin rates as the obvious danger after a comfortable win in the Sandy Lane at Haydock, but that form isn’t yet convincing after the well-fancied Vandeek under-performed. Elite Status should also be on the scene after an impressive success in Listed company at Newbury, while Starlust actually boasts the highest rating in this field and he isn’t easily discounted.

The first three from the 1000 Guineas reoppose, but it can pay to side with OPERA SINGER. A brilliant winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac last October, connections were clear to point out that she would come on for her highly creditable third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and now could be the time she is seen at her best. Elmalka narrowly saw off Porta Fortuna and Ramatuelle in the Newmarket Guineas, but it may be Donnacha O’Brien’s runner-up who fares best of that trio this time, having proven herself around a bend when touched off at the Breeders’ Cup. Unbeaten in three career outings and a taking winner of a Listed contest at York, Devoted Queen must also enter calculations.

Reserves at Royal Ascot
The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.
Today’s races with reserves running are the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes & Sandringham Stakes -
ZIGGY , TONY MONTANA - Duke of Edinburgh Stakes SHIN JIDAI - Sandringham Stakes
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse.

Race Summary:
Four of the last six renewals of this contest have gone the way of a four-year-old, so with that in mind, the vote goes to ETHICAL DIAMOND. The son of Awtaad was denied by the smallest of margins over 1m2f at Leopardstown in his preparation for this, shaping as if he would relish this extra distance. The booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye and he looks the one to be on, with his main threat possibly being Tony Montana, who seems to just do enough in his races, which possibly allows him to keep ahead of the handicapper Michael Bell’s gelding is only 2lb higher for his Windsor success last month and he isn’t taken lightly, while Crystal Black and Deakin are just two others to consider in a wide-open heat.

Race Summary:
A typically-open renewal sees a whole host of runners in with a chance, but it’s ASIAN DAZE who gets the tentative nod to give the 2021 winning combination of Johnny Murtagh and Ben Coen a second success in the race. This daughter of Frontiersman was only narrowly beaten by the reopposing Everlasting off level weights when second in Listed company over 1m at Navan earlier this month and she could reverse that form off a 5lb lower mark than Aiden O’Brien’s charge. The hat-trick seeking Indelible looks a leading player off a very tempting opening mark of 91 on his handicap bow, while Zaynab (first) and Flight Of Fancy (third) finished in front of the selection two starts ago and they are also worthy of consideration.

Race Summary:
Agenda was no match for the ill-fated Hidden Law in the Chester Vase but that is a strong piece of form and he can mount another stern challenge, for a trainer that has landed two of the previous five renewals of this race. Stablemate Diego Velazquez finished a creditable fourth in the French Guineas before posting another solid performance in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly earlier this month. Upped further in trip and back on a sounder surface, he must be feared, but THEORY OF TIDES might be worth chancing. This is much tougher than the two novice events he has been successful in but the son of Galileo looks potentially a high-class performer and he could be up to the task. Space Legend was an unfortunate loser at Goodwood last time but he won’t be far away granted a clear passage, while French raider Calandagan should not be underestimated but he might prefer slower ground.

Race Summary:
Although this is just the fifth renewal of this 5f contest for three-year-olds, it is interesting to note that the top six in the weights have yet to make the frame in the past four years This is a stat that the well-fancied Jubilee Walk must overcome, but James Ferguson’s gelding still warrants respect having completed a hat-trick at York last month. However, it may pay to side with a less-exposed rival in DORNEY LAKE. The Ardad colt has impressed on both victories to date this season and an opening handicap mark of 90 may underestimate his ability. The unbeaten Dyrholaey is also open to more improvement than most and arrives here on the back of a gutsy victory at Newcastle. The Archie Watson-trained colt is feared most, while Epsom Dash scorer Blue Storm and Vantheman are just two others to consider in a wide-open finale.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:
•The Queen Anne Stakes
•The King Charles III Stakes
•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
•The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Last year Valiant Force, winner of the Norfolk Stakes, took up that invitation and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind fellow Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, who was victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In fact four of the first six in that race ran at the Royal Meeting, including Queen Mary Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and No Nay Mets, who was fifth in the Norfolk Stakes
Meanwhile Warm Heart, who won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year, went on to be second in the Filly & Mare Turf behind Inspiral, herself a runner-up here last June. There continues to be a strong line of correlation between success at Royal Ascot and taking that form to the Breeders’ Cup.
9 Gr.1 winners and 54 Stakes winners across 3 continents
Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot last year, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.
