Royal Ascot: A Brief History

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”

These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.

The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768. A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.

It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.

Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.

Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.

4

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.

In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.

Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year. 2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.

Last year, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.

In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes is set to be run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty.

2023 also saw Frankie Dettori wave farewell to Royal Ascot in unforgettable style, winning the Gold Cup on-board Courage Mon Ami for his 79th winner at the Royal Meeting. He would add two more victories that week before leaving to ride in the USA at the end of the year

This year, prize money at the Royal Meeting reaches eight figures with the total fund across all 35 races in excess of £10 million, an increase of more than 5% on 2023’s figures. With eight Group 1 races and a total of 22 Pattern or Listed level events throughout the five days, Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the world.

Singing around the Bandstand

Racegoers in the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to join in with the unmissable singing around the bandstand after racing from 6.20pm.

It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal sing-along that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.

She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.

Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, My Way, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.

Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Scots Guards who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2024 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Race Histories

2.30pm The Chesham Stakes (Listed)

Named after the third Baron Chesham, who was the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901. First run in 1919, the Chesham Stakes replaced the first leg of the Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two-year-olds. Now a Listed contest, the race takes place over the longer distance of seven furlongs and is restricted to youngsters whose sire has won over ten furlongs or further. It was won in 2019 by the champion two-year-old that year, Pinatubo, in a track record time.

3.05pm The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)

Named after the fifth Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. The Group 2 contest continues to attract the best older middle-distance horses and is often an informative guide to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in July. It is run with no Group 1 or 2 winners’ penalties as a quasi-Group 1 race with top level horses regularly competing.

3.45pm The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

First run in 1868, this six-furlong contest was originally named after Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds, and known as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was given a new name – the Golden Jubilee Stakes - and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. It then assumed the mantle of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes for subsequent celebrations. In 2023 it was permanently renamed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Now worth £1 million in prize money, it is routinely won by some of the best sprinters in the world, including Black Caviar, Undrafted and Blue Point in recent years.

4.25pm The Jersey Stakes (Group 3)

The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the fourth Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this specialist seven-furlong contest is framed for three-year-olds who have often competed at the top level, including in the Guineas.

5.05pm The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

The inaugural running of the Wokingham Stakes took place in 1813, making this race the oldest handicap at Royal Ascot. This famous sprint is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot Racecourse, and the first dual winner was appropriately also named Wokingham (1881 and 1882). Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.

5.40pm The Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)

The penultimate contest at Royal Ascot was among the six prizes added to the race programme in 2020 and one of three newly named contests to be staged. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile. Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race title which is run over a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running proved a high-class contest with the winner, Highland Chief, subsequently being placed at Group 2 level.

6.15pm The Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions)

Run over the marathon trip of two-and-three-quarter miles, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is not only the longest race of the meeting, but also the longest contest run under Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as the Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with Brown Jack, arguably Royal Ascot’s greatest equine legend, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. The Queen Alexandra Stakes always closes the meeting and, perhaps because of its extreme distance in a time when so much emphasis is on speed, it has become a national institution and is affectionately supported by regulars.

Ellen Chaloner 1846-1944

The first woman to train a winner at Royal Ascot

Ellen Chaloner, a woman steeped in racing, became the first female trainer in Britain in 1886 when she was granted a permit to train by the Jockey Club following the death of her husband Tom.

Tom was a Classic winning jockey and trainer, with the highlight of his riding career coming in 1863 when he rode Macaroni to win the Derby The sport had always been in Ellen’s blood, her father, John Osborne Snr, was a trainer and her brother, John, a leading jockey who had won the Blue Riband at Epsom in 1869.

Ellen trained a small group of horses at Osborne House in Newmarket, just across the road from Heath House, where leading trainer Sir Mark Prescott now trains across both yards.

On Friday 10th June 1887 Ellen’s filly, Jersey Lily, won the Triennial Stakes at Royal Ascot, a mile race for three-year-olds that became the Jersey Stakes in 1919 and is now run on today’s card.

Jersey Lily was a 20/1 outsider and carried the bottom weight of eight stone in the ten-runner field. Ridden by Ellen’s son George, the filly

made all and won by a length ahead of another outsider, Roodee. Reports in the Sportsman at the time referred to a popular win for Mrs Chaloner and praised the skill of George’s riding. Later in his career George came second (1895) and third (1894) in the Derby at Epsom.

Ellen stopped training in 1894 but was part of the racing scene in Newmarket all her life. A quite remarkable woman, Ellen had seven children, six boys and one girl and lived until she was 98. She is remembered each year by the Ellen Chaloner Stakes at Newmarket, the first race on the card on QIPCO Guineas Saturday.

Her family legacy in racing lives on through her great-great grandson Charlie Swan, the former Irish champion jockey of Istabraq fame and his son, her great-great-great grandson, current Jumps jockey Harry Swan.

If you are at the Royal Meeting today take a moment to remember Ellen Chaloner, the first woman to train a winner at Royal Ascot.

Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition 2024

Our Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition invites students aged 15 and upwards to design an outfit to be worn in the Queen Anne Enclosure at Royal Ascot. We were delighted that LK Bennett, Official Womenswear Sponsor of Royal Ascot, were on board to manufacture the winning entry, which was designed by Felicitas Petersen, a 16-year-old student from St George’s School, Ascot. Her fabulous design can be seen below.

The standard of entry was very high, but the trouser style and colour of Felicitas’ design stood out for the judges As part of the prize, Felicitas visited LK Bennett’s HQ in London to choose fabrics and learn more about the design process. Alexandra Harper, esteemed member of the British Hat Guild, has created her stunning hat. More excitingly, LK Bennett will also be offering Felicitas work experience in the Autumn – a great stepping stone for this talented student. Felicitas is attending Royal Ascot today with her family to showcase her bespoke outfit.

Feature Race Analysis

The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes has an illustrious roll of honour, the likes of Black Caviar and Blue Point immediately spring to mind, and 14 are set to line up in this year’s Group 1 six-furlong sprint.

King Charles III Stakes fourth Believing turns around quickly after being beaten just a lengthand-a-half on Tuesday. She surged clear of the field in the Listed Achilles Stakes at Haydock at the start of the month and ran a mighty race earlier in the week when making her challenge from further back than those in front of her. Kinross no doubt brings the best pieces of form into this race as a two-time Group 1 winner, one of those arriving over course and distance on Champions Day in 2021. He is the joint highest-rated in the field but does arrive here without a run and has been beaten in the contest the past two seasons.

Plenty of the pace in this contest appears to be drawn down the centre, from Curragh specialist Art Power in stall seven to Washington Heights in stall ten, who fended off the strong favourite Mill Stream in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes This small cluster could attempt to get away on the front end and their form seems closely matched.

Mitbaahy was the winner of the Greenlands Stakes, producing an electrifying last-to-first success to grab the prize in the final strides under an exquisite ride from Jamie Spencer. The form of that race has since been boosted when Regional filled the runner-up spot here on Tuesday. This race could be set up perfectly for a closer and Khaadem was produced with a similar effort when landing the spoils here last year at a massive price, but he hasn’t been performing at the same level since. Swingalong often outruns her odds in these big sprints and is another that could pay to follow.

Retraining of Racehorses Donation

This year, as part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted that for every race our Racing Ambassador, Ryan Moore, wins during Royal Ascot, we will donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses, British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.

David Catlow, Retraining of Racehorses Managing Director, said, “We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen RoR as a nominated charity for this year’s Royal Ascot. RoR’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses for life, and we cannot do it without the vital and very generous support of organisations such as Ascot Racecourse.

“It promises to be a very exciting Royal Ascot for RoR. With each winner ridden by the brilliant Ryan Moore raising funds for RoR, we will certainly be cheering him on from the sidelines.”

Ryan Moore, added “I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Ascot Racecourse Supports and to help with the work it does in the community Hopefully, I can raise a bit of money at the Royal Meeting for an important cause in Retraining of Racehorses.”

We wish Ryan the best of luck with his 7 rides today:

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Race Summary:

BEDTIME STORY, a daughter of Frankel out of dual Nunthorpe winner Mecca’s Angel. He could hardly appeal more on pedigree and, on the back of a comfortable success over the extended 7f at Leopardstown 16 days ago, the sole representative of Ballydoyle is very hard to ignore, especially when Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race is taken into account. By the same sire, Age Of Gold made a pleasing start over 6f on debut at Yarmouth and, now stepped up in trip. He could be a fly in the ointment for O’Brien as he bears down on a seventh Chesham winner. There are a host of potential improvers, with stablemates Expensive Rose and Lazy Griff ones to consider each-way, while big runs from Motawahij and Jewel Of London cannot be ruled out.

Race Summary:

St Leger winner CONTINUOUS should be a real force over middle distances this season and can put down a significant marker on his first start of the campaign. Versatile regarding the ground, the son of Heart’s Cry was far from disgraced when fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe when last seen and the forecast quicker surface could be a key element to a dominate effort here. Middle Earth was seventh in the St Leger but returned with a gutsy success in the Aston Park at Newbury last month. The Gosdens’ representative is feared most, although Desert Hero is surely better than he managed when fifth in that Group 3 contest and enters calculations A winner at this meeting in 2022 when with George Boughey, Missed The Cut, a multiple Grade 3 winner for his new trainer in the States, is noted back at this venue with a first-time tongue-tie added.

Race Summary:

Race SUMMARY

Following a last-gasp victory in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes over 6f at the Curragh last time, MITBAAHY is fancied most to follow up that success and give last year’s winning connections of this renewal a second success in as many years. Charlie Hills’ five-year-old got up late to see off Regional on that occasion, who has since confirmed the form by running well into second in the King Charles III earlier this week. The progressive Mill Stream got up in the shadows of the post having been well-fancied in the Duke Of York last month and another bold bid appears likely. Kinross, who finished a disappointing seventh in this race last year, returns to the track after 245 days off and would be of major interest if any significant rainfall hit the track on the day, while the hat-trick seeking Shartash is also shortlisted.

Race Summary:

The Irish 2000 Guineas form could be the key to this race, with preference for the Aidan O’Brien-trained RIVER TIBER. The son of Wootton Bassett finished just over a length behind Haatem (second), but that was his first run of the campaign and, like many of his stablemates this week, he ought to take a big step forward from that effort. This could possibly be his ideal trip after running well at the top level over sprint distances as a juvenile. As for the latter, he makes his fourth start of the year having improved plenty from his juvenile campaign and he commands the utmost respect, despite dropping back in trip and giving away a 3lb penalty for his Craven success. Of the remainder, the progressive Never So Brave makes the most appeal after his impressive victory in a handicap at Chester last month.

2023: SAINT LAWRENCE (IRE) 5 9 2 Hollie Doyle 22-1 (Archie Watson) 27 ran

Race Summary:

Saint Lawrence started at odds of 22/1 when winning this contest last year and is a prime example of how this race can be a minefield for punters, but, given Apollo One (runner-up) and Juan Les Pins (third) have also gone up in the weights, he still offers some value in trying to emulate Rohaan, who landed back-to-back wins in the two previous editions. Albasheer drops in class but was notably well held in this 12 months ago and again carries risk. Therefore, perhaps Mums Tipple, off 4lb lower after finishing fourth to Archie Watson’s gelding, could reverse that form. However, DARK TROOPER, a dual C&D winner when trained by Ed Walker, may be the way to go for win only purposes, given he is a proven course specialist who is still on an upwards trajectory.

Reserves At Royal Ascot

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.

This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.

Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.

Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

Today’s race with a reserve running is The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)ROMAN DRAGON

Race Summary:

After a dominant success over 1m2f at Windsor last time, APPROVAL could be anything and this exciting proposition could make a mockery of an opening handicap mark of 90 William Haggas’ charge barely saw another rival on that occasion and showed a likeable attitude to race clear in the closing stages, looking better the further he went. The main danger could be fellow prominent racer Hand Of God, who justified a short price to win the Esher Cup over 1m at Sandown in April and will likely appreciate this extra yardage. The hat-trick seeking Old Faithful appears to be Aidan O’Brien’s first string, while stablemate Cambridge returns to handicap company after running with credit in Group company. Andrew Balding saddled Foxes Tales to victory in 2021 and he’s represented by Portsmouth.

Race Summary:

Dawn Rising won this last year for Joseph O’Brien and is back for more, but he has raced five times since without success. Ryan Moore was aboard the son of Galileo 12 months ago but switches to QUEENSTOWN for Aidan O’Brien and, if the younger gelding stays the trip, his one-length second to Kyprios at Leopardstown last month gives him the edge at these weights with every chance there is more to come. Uxmal has to be taken seriously, as does Fasol, a rare runner on the Flat for top NH trainer Paul Nicholls.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot

Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:

•The Queen Anne Stakes

•The King Charles III Stakes

•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes

•The Norfolk Stakes

All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

It’s simple, they win and they’re in.

In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Last year Valiant Force, winner of the Norfolk Stakes, took up that invitation and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind fellow Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, who was victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In fact four of the first six in that race ran at the Royal Meeting, including Queen Mary Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and No Nay Mets, who was fifth in the Norfolk Stakes

Meanwhile Warm Heart, who won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year, went on to be second in the Filly & Mare Turf behind Inspiral, herself a runner-up here last June. There continues to be a strong line of correlation between success at Royal Ascot and taking that form to the Breeders’ Cup.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot

The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.

Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot last year, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:

• A cardiac assessment

• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line

• An examination of the musculoskeletal system

These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.

Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.

In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.
