Ascot Racecard - Saturday 13th July

C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E

Welcome to the second day of the Summer Mile Racing Weekend. We are pleased to be offering over £375,000 in prize money on today’s seven-race card, including £140,000 for the feature race, the Anne Cowley Memorial Summer Mile which is a Group 2 contest run over the Old Mile on the Round Course. Anne sadly died in June this year just before the Royal Meeting. This was 11 years after her husband Fred Cowley MBE, whose business Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd was a race sponsor at Ascot for many years. Both were avid racing fans, and thanks to Anne, the Summer Mile was run in Fred’s name for the majority of the last decade. Today we honour his wife who maintained her presence in the sport that she and Fred both loved until the end of her life.

Our grateful thanks also go to today’s raceday sponsors A1R Services, Magnum, Village Hotels and SportVision. We are also grateful to Juddmonte for the generous sponsorship that it has provided to the third race today. This is part of Juddmonte’s important support of the wider British developmental race programme.

The fourth race on today’s card is the Ascot Racecourse Supports Sport in Mind Handicap, promoting the work of a mental health charity that uses sport and physical activity to improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems. To raise further awareness for their services, they are running bean bag toss, skittles and Giant Connect 4 activities for children to take part in.

The Summer Mile Family Raceday is always a fantastic day for families to spend together here at Ascot and we have plenty going on off the track to keep everyone entertained. Whether it’s meeting our Equine Ambassador, Side Glance, or taking part in face painting, circus workshops, or mini golf, there is fun for the whole family at Ascot today.

Before racing, we will be staging two pony races as part of the Dragon (TV & Film) Studios Racecourse Series - this follows our Pony Racing Taster Day which we hosted in April. Our thanks go to the Pony Racing Authority for helping to organise these important events at Ascot to hopefully inspire the next generation of riders.

Our next meeting in two weeks’ time is the QIPCO King George Weekend, featuring the £1.25 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. We look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot then.

Yours sincerely,

Heritage Handicap Stakes

Today’s opener is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races

PAGES 26-28

2nd Race 2.20pm

The Anne Cowley Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2)

The feature race of the day, this one mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class horses Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty while Group 1 winners will incur a 5lb penalty.

PAGES 32-34

3rd Race 2.57pm

The Juddmonte British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes

This seven furlong novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds which are E.B.F eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties for each race won.

PAGES 46-48

4th Race 3.32pm

The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sport In Mind Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES 50-52

5th Race 4.07pm

The Magnum Classic Ice Cream Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

PAGES 60-62

6th Race 4.42pm

The Village Hotels Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 69 to 88. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PAGES 64-67

7th Race 5.17pm

The SportVision Handicap Stakes

Our finale is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

20. Weight (stones/pounds)

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

22. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY

EXISTENT made a pleasing return to action when filling the runner-up spot in this grade at Sandown recently and he is only 1lb higher for that effort. With his usual hold-up tactics likely to suit at this track, he is an appealing option off his current mark. The main danger is King’s Lynn, who has been a model of consistency in each of his last three starts. The hat-trick seeking Get It and Jumbeau complete the shortlist.

Today’s feature race, the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes will be run in memory of Anne Cowley, who sadly passed away in June.

Anne, and her late husband Fred, were huge supporters of racing, owning horses in their distinctive black and white colours as well as being regular attendees at all the big meetings including Royal Ascot and the Derby at Epsom.

When Fred died in 2013 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s, the Cowley family sponsored the Summer Mile in his memory and this support continued over the next ten years

Together, Anne and Fred owned many horses over the years, including Tip Two Win who was second in the 2,000 Guineas and fourth in the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018. Due to his illness, Fred could not recognise the horses but he identified them by the distinctive white and black boxed breast girth which they all carried to match the silks Anne ensured that they attended most venues where their horses were racing, and this brought great joy to them both.

RETURN YOUR RE-CUP

Members of the Cowley family are joining us today and Anne’s daughter, Karen, and grandson, Garrett, will present the trophies for the Anne Cowley Memorial Summer Mile Stakes.

The race is on to reduce plastic waste

Racegoers at all meetings are asked to place their used glasses into one of over 200 dedicated RE-CUP bins around site or return them to the bars. Glasses are subsequently washed and returned to the racecourse.

Around the Bandstand today, we are delighted to display some of the winning entries, made by local children, for the ‘Winged Wonders: Messengers of Life’ art installation at the 117th Royal Windsor Flower Show held at the York Club, Windsor Great Park on 8th June 2024.

All the designs were created and displayed in the children’s marquee at the show by Busy Buttons CORE charity using recycled and natural materials

An all-inclusive workshop was established by the charity comprising almost 300 children from 10 local schools who visited the charity’s premises over a period of months to create the giant butterflies. The team also took the workshop to two special needs schools.

The inspiration for the installation was the simple geometric shapes in nature reflected in the giant floral patterns as seen on educational trips with the children to Kew Gardens, Waltham Place and Windsor Great Park.

The designs reflect a creative consciousness being made from sustainable materials, donated by Tesco and Asda, with little or no waste at the end. Students who were working with the charity towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award were also involved in the process

The project was sponsored by the Ascot Racecourse Supports programme as part of its 3-year commitment to support the Royal Windsor Flower Show schools craft programme.

In summary, this initiative has helped students creatively learn more about our winged VIPs (Very Important Pollinators) whilst inclusively engaging children who face barriers or have special needs (or ‘superpowers’ as the charity refers to these children as possessing).

RACE SUMMARY

Big Sip ran a debut full of promise when he was only denied by a neck into second at Kempton last month and, with normal improvement, he could have a say. However, ANGEL HUNTER is preferred Richard Hannon’s charge produced an eye-catching debut effort when finishing a close-up third at Sandown last week and he would have learned a great deal from that experience. Any market confidence behind Wiesaam would be interesting.

In March 2024, Ascot Racecourse Supports sponsored a baking competition in collaboration with educational charity, Learning to Work, that saw local schools compete to create a traybake with a Royal Ascot theme. Bakes were judged by Gemma Amor, 1711 Executive Head Chef and celebrity pâtissier, Eric Lanlard.

The ultimate prize was to have the winning bakes available for racegoers to buy and today we are delighted to showcase the

“Apple Rose Traybake” from Eden Girls’ School, Slough and the “Victoria Sponge Traybake” from Holy Trinity School, Cookham. Both are available to buy from the Lavazza Tierra outlet on the Grandstand Concourse and Lavazza on 4 (fourth floor).

As part of their prize, the winners and runners up were also invited to enjoy our family raceday today.

RACE SUMMARY

A wide-open contest and only a tentative vote can go to FLYING FRONTIER. James Tate’s charge chased home a couple of useful types at the end of last season and there was encouragement to be taken from his Sandown reappearance. The unexposed son of Farhh ought to relish the step back up in trip, while the likely strong pace will also suit. Runner-up in the Wolferton, Haunted Dream is of interest returned to handicaps, while Epic Poet, Enfjaar, Liberty Lane and Paradias are just a handful of others to consider

Today, we are delighted to welcome Sport in Mind (SIM), based in Reading. It is the UK’s leading mental health sports charity delivering physical activity (sport, walking, dance and movement, gardening and exercise sessions) projects in partnership with the amazing NHS in order to aid recovery, promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.

SIM delivers sessions to support the recovery of people living with mental health problems in the community and inpatient care, believing that everyone should have the opportunity to take part in sport and physical activity irrespective of how unwell they are.

In addition to delivering physical activity programmes to improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems, SIM also educates people about mental illness and the benefits of being physically active.

Ascot Racecourse has made a 3-year pledge to Sport in Mind to expand its vital services across East Berkshire by increasing Sport in Mind’s youth programmes and education in East Berkshire. With the support of our pledge, Sport in Mind is working closely with youth social prescribing teams and early help teams from East Berkshire CAMHS

service. Alongside this work, many young students will train with Sport in Mind, to gain an ASDAN award (nationally recognised accreditation), bringing true leadership from young people to their youth service.

We have invited the charity to run activities to showcase its services today, these include bean bag toss, skittles and giant Connect 4 which can all be found on the Lawns. We have also named our 3.30pm race ‘The Ascot Racecourse Supports Sport in Mind Handicap Stakes’ in the charity’s honour

Should you be interested in supporting the charity, it is our official bucket collector today, so please donate if you are able.

RACE SUMMARY

After a ready success over 1m6f at Sandown last time, this appears to be a good opportunity for COCO ROYALE to follow up William Haggas’ charge scored by more than five lengths despite being keen early in that contest, which suggests an 8lb rise in the ratings may not be enough to halt her progression. Wind Your Neck In, on the back of a narrow defeat over 2m at Chester, heads the list of dangers from Tactician.

RACE SUMMARY

Lord Melbourne was a good winner of the Queen Mother’s Cup over 1m4f at York last time and another bold bid can be expected. However, a chance is taken on ZIGGY, who had excuses when finishing third over C&D last time in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at the Royal Meeting and Harry Eustace’s consistent performer rates the one to beat on that form. Sheradann completes the shortlist on his first start on these shores.

RACE PREDICTOR

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.

There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

9-4 Inisherin (GB), 6-1 Vandeek (GB), 8-1 Kinross (GB), 17-2 River Tiber (IRE), 9-1 Regional (GB), 14-1 Jasour (GB), 16-1 Mill Stream (IRE), 22-1 Khaadem (IRE), Swingalong (IRE), 25-1 Mitbaahy (IRE), 28-1 Art Power (IRE), 66-1 Vadream (GB)

RACE SUMMARY

Inisherin (first) got the better of JASOUR (third) when the pair met in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last month and, though the former was undoubtedly impressive on that occasion, it may pay to side with the latter It was a testament to his ability that he was able to finish third, despite plenty going wrong in the aforementioned contest, breaking awkwardly before racing too keenly throughout. Granted a smoother passage this time around, Clive Cox’s C&D winner should make a bold bid to reverse form here. High-class operator Vandeek is on the comeback trail after a below-par effort in the Sandy Lane at Haydock, while River Tiber merits respect back down to arguably his optimum trip

RACE SUMMARY

Fair Point, who breezed to a 20-length success in a 7f maiden at Chester on her latest start, is open to any amount of improvement and rates a serious player upped in trip on her handicap debut. However, this is a much deeper race, where the likes of Canoodled, Bellarchi and AZAHARA PALACE all have their sights lowered after appearances at the Royal Meeting. The latter appeals most back on slower ground after her respectable effort in the Kensington Palace Stakes.

RACE SUMMARY

Rod Millman fields a couple of solid contenders in the shape of Billy Mill and Able Kane, who are both highly effective at this trip However, the vote goes to BURDETT, who is surely better than he showed at Thirsk last month and, notably, would be giving weight away all round here were it not for his weight-for-age allowance. Pedro Valentino and Optiva Star hold place claims in a competitive renewal.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
