O M E
Welcome to the first day of The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association With Chapel Down.
There is plenty of entertainment both on and off the track over the next two days and we would like to thank Chapel Down for their generous sponsorship of this race weekend. Whether you’re visiting the Great Taste Food Market, sampling the Hallgarten Wine Tasting, or watching our chef demonstrations in the Furlong Club and the Bandstand Kitchen, it promises to be a feast for the senses.
Today’s seven-race card features an intriguing mix of two-year-old races with plenty of potential, and contests for older horses including the popular LK Bennett Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap. Our thanks go to LK Bennett for their continued support of the race, as well as our other race sponsors Wesco Anixter, Charbonnel et Walker, Sodexo Live! and Juddmonte.
Across the weekend we are trialling a number of sustainability initiatives designed to reduce the impact that our events have on the environment. You can find out more about them around the racecourse today and also on page 12 of the racecard. They form part of our wider Racing to Zero strategy which sets us on the path to reach net-zero at Ascot by 2040.
Tomorrow marks the start of National Racehorse Week and we have named the sixth race after this fantastic industry initiative. Our Equine Ambassador, Side Glance, will be on the Cedar Tree Lawn tomorrow to greet racegoers, and he will also be visiting Thames Hospice and Arbour Vale School next week as part of our community outreach programme. Our thanks go to Retraining of Racehorses for enabling horses like Side Glance to enjoy such fulfilling lives after retiring from racing.
We hope to welcome you back to Ascot tomorrow where the feature race is the Chapel Down Handicap Stakes
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RACING PAGES
Your guide to all of today’s races
The LK Bennett Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 20-22
2nd Race 2.25pm
The Charbonnel et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
PAGES 26-28
3rd Race 3.00pm
The Wesco Anixter EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
This one mile novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. As this contest is for fillies only, they all start on level weights then penalties are added depending on the level of a previous success.
PAGES 34-36
4th Race 3.35pm
The Juddmonte British EBF
Restricted Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
This six furlong novice stakes is another restricted to two-year-olds and holds the same conditions as the previous race of today’s meeting. However, as this is for both colts and fillies, weights are based on sex before any penalties are awarded.
PAGES 40-42
5th Race 4.10pm
The Ascot Iron Stand Membership Classified Stakes
This race is a seven furlong classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike in a handicap, when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically hold an advantage as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals
PAGES 44-46
6th Race 4.45pm
The National Racehorse Week Handicap Stakes
Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 48-50
7th Race 5.20pm
The Sodexo Live! Handicap Stakes
Today’s finale is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Showcasing Sustainability
at The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association with Chapel Down
At Ascot Racecourse, we’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of events on every level and are constantly adapting our operations to become more sustainable. In 2022, Ascot Racecourse launched Racing to Zero, setting out the ambition of halving emissions by 2030 and aiming to achieve net-zero by 2040.
We’re intent on proving that delivering a spectacular occasion to remember, and minimising waste, carbon emissions and energy consumption can go hand in hand.
With that intention in mind, we are launching and trialling a number of sustainability initiatives across The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association with Chapel Down on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th September
These initiatives include:
• Incentivising people to travel in a more sustainable way. Anybody cycling, walking, running, getting the train or driving an electric car to Ascot across the weekend will be rewarded with a complimentary ticket to a future raceday.
• Racecards will only be available digitally in both public enclosures These will be accompanied by racesheets, provided free of charge and with a QR card that will provide access to the digital racecard. The racesheets are fully recyclable.
• We are encouraging all guests to understand the impact their journey to Ascot had on the environment by accessing a simple online offset calculator.
• All winning owners from the weekend will be provided with a voucher for Oak Tree Garden Centre, offering them the chance to give back to the environment.
• We will also be showcasing our award winning sustainability initiatives across the weekend with content on the big screens and across the racecourse.
You can find out more about Ascot’s sustainability commitments and the Racing to Zero strategy at ascot.com/about/sustainability

Smart Works Reading is a charity that supports unemployed women in Berkshire into work via its free job interview dressing and preparation service. It provides a transformational two-stage consultation at its centre in Reading. Clients are given an interview-ready outfit that is theirs to keep, followed by a one-to-one coaching session to help them excel at interview and secure a job.
An amazing 69% of Smart Works’ clients go on to secure employment within a month of their consultation, gaining financial independence and changing the course of their lives.
The charity helps some of the most vulnerable women in society who are referred from job centres, prisons, refuges, mental health charities and other support services. These women want a job but lack the confidence to succeed at interview. Smart Works Reading, one of seven Smart Works centres throughout the UK, works to improve the women’s confidence and since opening its doors in 2015 has helped over 2,000 women into work.
SHE GOT THE JOB!
Client Rosie* shared that being unemployed affected her mental well-being, self-esteem and confidence, while also limiting her social interactions She felt that she “ no longer had a purpose just waking up and staying home all day”. Her experience at Smart Works Reading really helped build her confidence: “The interview practice was brilliant, and the dressing support was off the charts. I feel much more like my old self again.” For Rosie, getting a job means much more than just providing a better life for herself and her children as a single mother “It gives me a renewed sense of purpose, something to look forward to and in my new job I’m doing my bit to make a difference in people’s lives.”
*Not the client’s real name. Client is not pictured. Ascot Racecourse Supports has supported Smart Works since 2021 and today it is our official bucket collector, so please donate if you are able.

4-1 Dakota Power (GB), 7-1 Law Supreme (FR), 15-2 Power of Gold (GB), 10-1 Little Empire (IRE), 11-1 Alazwar (IRE), Mumayaz (IRE), Obelix (GB), Shaladar (FR), 12-1 Crystal Casque (GB), Double Time (GB), 14-1 Terries Royale (GB), 20-1 One Step Beyond (IRE), 28-1 Desert Doctor (IRE), 40-1 Master of Combat (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY
Power Of Gold was narrowly denied over 7f at Doncaster last time out and must be respected back at the mile, while last-start Ffos Las scorer Dakota Power is another likely to prove popular. However, there have been more encouraging signs from last year’s winner CRYSTAL CASQUE of late. Rod Millman’s mare is now 5lb lower than for that triumph and a repeat could be on the cards. Law Supreme is another to consider.

RACE SUMMARY
This looks a warm contest on paper, with the likes of Al Samed, Tornado Alert and Frankini all making some appeal ahead of their debuts. Experience might prove to be crucial, though, and it is the Aidan O’Brien-trained ISAMBARD BRUNEL who shades preference. The son of Justify didn’t quite get home over the mile at Newbury three weeks ago, but he ought to be wiser this time around and could step forward now eased in trip. Others to note include Calla Lagoon, Fifth Column and Seaplane.

RACE SUMMARY
BALLET SLIPPERS was third behind a potentially smart type on her Curragh debut before finding another exciting prospect too strong there next time. The daughter of Dubawi, who is the first foal out of the brilliant Magical, should be even better now sent over a mile and looks set to strike at the third time of asking. Glistening has produced a similar level of form across her two starts and is unlikely to be far away, while the penalised Kylie Of Lochalsh is taken to chase them home

Now in the colours of Wathnan Racing and switched to trainer Hamad Al Jehani after a taking debut victory at Naas in July, DIEGO VENTURA is likely to have plenty more improvement to come and he can defy his penalty. He gets the vote ahead of promising Windsor fourth Newlyn School and Beauty By My Side, who was an eye-catcher when staying on late at Yarmouth first time out.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

BENNETOT caught the eye when staying on from the rear to take fifth in a valuable York handicap that was dominated by those who raced prominently last time. A reproduction of that level of form would give the five-year-old a big chance here. Awaal was not disgraced when seventh in the Bunbury Cup on his return in July and he has to be of interest, while Dear My Friend and Tempus are others to note

RACE SUMMARY
A case can be made for all of these, but marginal preference is for PEDRO VALENTINO Clive Cox’s gelding has been successful in two of his last three starts and a 4lb rise for the most recent of those wins may still underestimate him. A drop in trip and application of first-time cheekpieces makes Usuario Amigo of interest, while Granger Bay edges out Love Billy Boy and Zainabb to be best of the rest.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
