Welcome to the second day of The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association With Chapel Down.
Whether you are visiting the Great Taste Food Market, sampling the Hallgarten Wine Tasting, or watching our chef demonstrations in the Furlong Club and the Bandstand Kitchen, there is plenty to enjoy both on and off the track today. We would like to thank Chapel Down for their generous sponsorship of this race weekend, which promises to be a feast for the senses
Chapel Down also sponsor today’s feature race, a £100,000 heritage handicap over a mile and a half which was won last year in impressive fashion by Alsakib, who has gone on to win a Group 3 this year
We witnessed some other star performances on this card in 2023, including a remarkable seventh win of the season for Quinault, a fourth-straight victory for Dark Trooper, and a future star in Ghostwriter who won the Royal Lodge on his next start before finishing third in both the Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International this season behind City Of Troy. We would like to extend a warm welcome to the other race sponsors today tote.co.uk, bet365, Fever-Tree and UK Hi-Fi Show Live. We are grateful to them all for their support of this raceday.
Today is the start of National Racehorse Week which runs from 7th - 15th September and celebrates the life of the thoroughbred. This special week provides wonderful opportunities for the public to witness the first-class care and attention that all racehorses receive throughout their lives.
Our own Equine Ambassador, Side Glance, will be here today on the Cedar Tree Lawn to greet racegoers. ‘Sidey’ has become such a huge part of our community outreach programme thanks to the Retraining of Racehorses ‘Horses For Courses’ scheme. Next week, he will be visiting Thames Hospice and Arbour Vale School as part of our National Racehorse Week activity
Our next race meeting is the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October, featuring the ever-popular Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA. We hope you will join us then.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The bet365 Handicap Stakes
This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 22-24
2nd Race 2.10pm
The Chapel Down Handicap Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only. Just like the previous race, it has no rating restrictions attached to it but this still impacts the higher rated horses as they concede weight to their lower rated rivals, so expect this race to be just as competitive as the opener.
PAGES 32-33
3rd Race 2.45pm
The tote.co.uk British EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
This seven furlong novice stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 36-38
4th Race 3.20pm
The UK Hi-Fi Show Live September 21st-22nd “Confined” Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 and have not won more than one race this year. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
PAGES 48-50
5th Race 3.55pm
The Fever-Tree Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 79 to 98
Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
PAGES 52-53
6th Race 4.30pm
The tote.co.uk British EBF
Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 56-58
7th Race 5.05pm
The tote.co.uk Handicap Stakes
Todays action concludes with a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 79 to 98. Like most handicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Official BHA Rating 107
20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Showcasing Sustainability
at The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association with Chapel Down
At Ascot Racecourse, we’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of events on every level and are constantly adapting our operations to become more sustainable. In 2022, Ascot Racecourse launched Racing to Zero, setting out the ambition of halving emissions by 2030 and aiming to achieve net-zero by 2040.
We’re intent on proving that delivering a spectacular occasion to remember, and minimising waste, carbon emissions and energy consumption can go hand in hand.
With that intention in mind, we are launching and trialling a number of sustainability initiatives across The Big Ascot Food & Wine Festival In Association with Chapel Down on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th September
These initiatives include:
• Incentivising people to travel in a more sustainable way. Anybody cycling, walking, running, getting the train or driving an electric car to Ascot across the weekend will be rewarded with a complimentary ticket to a future raceday.
• Racecards will only be available digitally in both public enclosures These will be accompanied by racesheets, provided free of charge and with a QR code that will provide access to the digital racecard. The racesheets are fully recyclable.
• We are encouraging all guests to understand the impact their journey to Ascot had on the environment by accessing a simple online offset calculator.
• All winning owners from the weekend will be provided with a voucher for Oak Tree Garden Centre, offering them the chance to give back to the environment.
• We will also be showcasing our award winning sustainability initiatives across the weekend with content on the big screens and across the racecourse.
You can find out more about Ascot’s sustainability commitments and the Racing to Zero strategy at ascot.com/about/sustainability

RACE SUMMARY
An open event could go to THE WIZARD OF EYE, who landed the Victoria Cup over C&D in May. He was far from disgraced in the Jubilee Stakes the following month and, given that he remains fairly treated off a mark of 102, the return to handicaps can see him in a better light. Blue Prince (third) and Rebel Territory (sixth) met at Goodwood recently and the latter, who was returning from over a year off the track, could turn the tables. Others to note include Miss Information and the hat-trick seeking Run Boy Run.

RACE SUMMARY
French Duke finished a creditable sixth in the King George V at the Royal Meeting in June before striking at Goodwood next time, and he merits the utmost respect despite a subsequent 9lb hike in the ratings. The Reverend sports first-time cheekpieces on his handicap bow and must enter calculations along with stablemate Solomon. A chance is taken on HIGH ORDER, though, who makes significant appeal now dropped in trip off a 2lb lower mark having perhaps failed to stay an extended 1m6f at Doncaster.

RACE SUMMARY
HAMISH put in a very rare below-par performance when well beaten into fourth at Newmarket, but that followed a top-class effort when second in the Coronation Cup at Epsom. With that in mind, the eight-year-old can be given another chance as he bids to repeat his 2021 victory in this contest. Kalpana has proven to be consistent throughout this season and is likely to be in the mix once again, while Lion’s Pride edges out Cemhaan to be best of the rest

RACE SUMMARY
ANGEL HUNTER was given an initial figure of 83 after showing plenty of ability on his first three appearances, and he proved up to the task when landing a hotly-contested nursery at York’s Ebor meeting. Now rated 90, Richard Hannon’s colt sets a fine standard back in novice company and could even be Pattern material Mr Fantastic has let down favourite-backers twice, but there has been nothing wrong with his performances at Hamilton and Haydock. Law Of Design offered encouragement at Newmarket, and Cape Breton is a fascinating newcomer.

RACE SUMMARY
A tentative vote goes to BRIONI, who ran a career best on the back of wind surgery when runner-up in a valuable handicap at Goodwood last month. Alan King’s charge may have been unfancied on that occasion, but he can prove that effort was no fluke, with Chester second More Thunder and former Derby hopeful Voyage looking best placed to chase him home An unlucky fourth when not getting a clear run at York latest, Whiskey Pete is another to note

RACE SUMMARY
A gallant runner-up in the July Cup, Swingalong fared best out of those who clashed in Newmarket’s summer highlight but whether he can uphold the form with Inisherin (fifth) is debatable, given he got first run. The latter, who was imperious when landing the Sandy Lane over C&D in May before landing the Commonwealth Cup, can be forgiven one bad day at the office and could very easily bounce back. However, JASOUR (sixth) was only a neck behind Kevin Ryan’s colt last time and has very little to find to steal the limelight here. Flora Of Bermuda is another appealing each-way option.

RACE SUMMARY
Billy Loughnane seemed to get a good tune out of FRESH when third in a valuable handicap here over 7f in July, and a 2lb rise for that effort could prove lenient. Dropping back to 6f should not inconvenience either and this course regular can see off the likes of narrow Goodwood second Tacarib Bay, and Buccabay, who makes his first start for new connections. Two Tribes is likely to be thereabouts as well after an eye-catching effort at York last month.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

RACE SUMMARY
Twirling has made the frame in each of her last two starts in class 3 handicaps and should make a bold bid off the same mark as her third at Goodwood last month. However, ROWAYEH finished 15 places in front of her in the Kensington Palace here in June and that may be the key piece of form to focus on. Owen Burrows’ four-year-old produced a solid effort when a close-up third at Goodwood last time and can return to winning ways. Surveyor completes the shortlist.

RACE SUMMARY
Good Earth is in sparkling form at present after completing a double at Sandown last week and he remains on a workable mark. However, this is a much tougher assignment and, with that in mind, the vote goes to EXISTENT Stuart Williams’ six-year-old finished a close-up fourth over C&D in July and competes off a 4lb lower rating. If he can recapture that level of form, he ought to go close. Previous C&D winner Dream Composer and Brooklyn Nine Nine are two others to consider.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
