Welcome to the first day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, featuring the 17th Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA.
Today’s highlight on the track is the BetMGM Noel Murless Stakes, a Listed event for three-year-olds over one mile and six furlongs. Last year, this contest was won by Middle Earth, a Group 3 winner this year who also finished third in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and is now on target for the Melbourne Cup
We have also seen the likes of Scope and Big Orange go on to achieve top-level success after winning this race.
Our thanks go to BetMGM for their generous support of that feature race and two other contests on the card, as well as their sponsorship of the weekend as a whole. We also extend our gratitude to today’s other race sponsors, Molton Brown, Colliers, and the Victoria Racing Club
Off the track, we invite you to visit the Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA, where you can take your pick from over 160 different beers, ciders and perries, located at the east end of the Grandstand.
This weekend we are hosting Berkshire Healthcare Charity and their mental health bus as part of our awareness promotion of World Mental Health Day that takes place on 10th October They are crowdfunding to help raise £4,000 for a new Cardio Wall which helps inpatients with their physical activity and mental health and will have bucket collectors throughout the course today. ‘We are also hosting Racing Welfare for their annual lunch and look forward to welcoming 45 beneficiaries from the charity’s main hubs in Lambourn, Kingsclere and Newbury.’
We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow for the second day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend and also for QIPCO British Champions Day, the conclusion of our Flat season in two weeks’ time.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Molton Brown Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 This specific handicap is also limited to male amateur jockeys. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 2.47pm
The Colliers Handicap Stakes
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 28-29
3rd Race 3.22pm
The BetMGM Novice Stakes (GBB Race)
This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs There are a variety of reasons why the horses in this contest are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances in their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
PAGES 32-33
4th Race 3.57pm
The BetMGM Noel Murless Listed Stakes
This one mile and six furlong contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 10lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.
PAGES 36-38
5th Race 4.30pm
The BetMGM Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 5.05pm
The Victoria Racing Club Classified Stakes
This race is a one-mile classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike a handicap when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

To raise awareness for World Mental Health Day which takes place on 10th October 2024, this week we ran two private racecourse tours and a meet-and-greet with Side Glance – our equine ambassador – for those suffering with dementia. There are many benefits to equine therapy, including improving nonverbal communication skills and boosting confidence, and having Side Glance interact with people facing mental health challenges has proven hugely successful in previous events we have hosted within the community.
Today and tomorrow we are also hosting the Berkshire Healthcare Charity who is raising awareness and funds for mental health support in the region. Its “health bus” is located on the concourse level of the Parade Ring so please feel free to pop in. Hear from the charity below.
Berkshire Healthcare Charity: Help Us Raise £4,000 for Mental Health Support
Berkshire Healthcare Charity is dedicated to enhancing the lives of patients and their families across Berkshire by providing vital support that extends beyond standard healthcare services. As the official charity of Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, we strive to improve the well-being of those under our care by funding projects and services that elevate the patient experience and offer much-needed support to families
This October and November, we have a crowdfunding campaign to raise £4,000, to be match-funded by Sport England. The funds will be used to purchase a new Cardio Wall for Prospect Park, our inpatient mental health hospital. This innovative piece of equipment will be a key component of our Motion in Mind appeal, focusing on promoting physical activity as a means of improving mental health. The Cardio Wall will provide patients with an engaging and interactive way to incorporate movement into their recovery, helping to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety while boosting overall mood and resilience.
Your support is crucial in helping us achieve these goals. By contributing to our crowdfunder, you can make a real difference in the lives of patients and their families across Berkshire. For more information on how you can help or to donate, please visit our crowdfunding page at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/cardio-walls-forinpatient-mental-health-ward
The charity is our official bucket collector today, so please donate if you are able.
Molton Brown will present a memento to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and £100 to the stable employee in charge of the best turned out horse in this race

RACE SUMMARY
Previous course winner WHENTHEDEALINSDONE was on the back of a short break when he finished a respectable third at Southwell last month. The six-year-old could be a surprise package upped in trip from a highly competitive mark, especially with cut in the ground not expected to be an issue King Cabo should also appreciate the forecast going and commands respect given he has won on the all-weather from 3lb higher Shaladar and Dakota Power are others for consideration.

Today, as part of our support of Racing Welfare, we are delighted to host 45 beneficiaries from the charity’s hubs in Lambourn, Kingsclere and Newbury – read more from the charity about its work below.
Racing Welfare is the only charity which supports the entire workforce of British horse racing, which includes stud, stable and racecourse staff and associated professions.
Our mission is to enhance and support the wellbeing of racing’s people through the vision that all of racing’s people feel supported and have the opportunity to thrive
With an estimated 20,000 people directly employed in racing, we offer professional guidance and practical help in key areas encompassing physical health, mental health, bereavement, money, illness, addiction, careers advice, relationships and retirement. Our welfare teams can be contacted through Racing’s Support Line 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 0800 6300 443
Racing Welfare also provides safe and affordable housing, which is managed by the charity’s housing provider - Racing Homes.
Retired beneficiaries Susan and Vincent Flynn recently moved into a Racing Homes property. Susan said: “We both have health issues and just wanted to be closer to family in our retirement and this place has given us the security we need – you can’t put a price on that. It really has been a lifeline for us and we’re so thankful to Racing Homes and Racing Welfare for all their help.”

Welfare continues to evolve To build stronger communities and enhance and support the wellbeing of racing’s people, a community engagement department was established in 2023. Made possible through funding from the John Pearce Foundation, the department aims to raise awareness of, and participation in, Racing Welfare’s services
We need to raise more than £3m every year to provide our vital services for the people behind the scenes in horse racing who make our sport possible. We can only operate through the generosity and support of people and organisations who donate and fundraise on our behalf. By getting involved, you can help ensure we reach our fundraising targets so that we can continue to be there for all of racing’s people.

RACE SUMMARY
TRUE LEGEND is unexposed over 2m and, having finished a commendable third in a deeper race on his only previous try over C&D, the Sir Mark Prescott-trained four-year-old could be up to giving weight and a beating to the opposition. Maxident can make this tough for the selection if he is allowed an easy time on the front end, while Hutchence also rates a player with the longer trip a potential source of further progression.

RUSSIAN CRESCENDO looked an interesting work in progress when she scored decisively at Kempton last month, which was a marked improvement from her racecourse bow and created the impression she has plenty more to offer. As both Wendrock and Fireblade need to find improvement from their respective debut runs, the well-bred newcomer Lady Chauntee, whose dam was a Listed winner in France, could be the one to give the selection the most to think about.

RACE SUMMARY
Having finished third on his last two starts in Group company, including the Geoffrey Freer on his penultimate start, GO DADDY can take advantage of a drop in class on this occasion. The son of Scat Daddy has run creditably on heavy ground before, and he can regain the winning thread at the main expense of the progressive Subsequent, who was narrowly denied in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster last time out. A comfortable winner of the Melrose on just his fifth career outing, Tabletalk is another key player if handling conditions.

RACE SUMMARY
ROHAAN may have disappointed in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out, but he is better judged on his penultimate effort when a fast-finishing third over C&D. The son of Mayson is now 8lb lower than his success in the race last year and is on a dangerous mark. Garfield Shadow, who came from off the pace when a promising third in a valuable handicap over 7f on Irish Champions weekend, is likely to enter calculations, while Never So Brave and Baradar cannot be ruled out either

As long as she handles the ground, William Haggas’ charge is taken to see off the likes of Thyer, who was a determined winner at Windsor on his first start for new connections, and Ebt’s Guard. Completing the shortlist are the likes of Aquacell, Dashing Roger and Monkey Island.

The race is on to reduce plastic waste
Racegoers at all meetings are asked to place their used glasses into one of over 200 dedicated RE-CUP bins around site or return them to the bars. Glasses are subsequently washed and returned to the racecourse.
A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
