Welcome to the second day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, our penultimate fixture of the Flat season, featuring the 17th Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA.
We extend our thanks to BetMGM for their generous support of this two-day event as well as their sponsorship of three races on today’s card. The feature BetMGM Challenge Cup is the richest seven-furlong handicap in the country - let’s hope we are treated to a finish as exciting as last year’s race, when Atrium pipped Popmaster right on the line.
The BetMGM Cumberland Lodge Stakes features the 2023 winner, Al Qareem, and the 2022 winner, Hamish, in what looks another strong renewal of the Group 3.
Our thanks also go to John Guest Racing who sponsor our other Group 3 race, the Bengough Stakes and McGee Group who support the Listed October Stakes.
As part of our awareness promotion of World Mental Health Day that takes place on 10th October, today we welcome the Berkshire Healthcare Charity and their mental health bus, which is located by the Parade Ring. In addition, the Army Benevolent Fund’s merchandise stand will be located in the Grandstand and they will have bucket collectors throughout the course.
All of this activity forms part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports programme which last month saw our annual staff volunteers’ week. This year a record 104 staff members headed out into our community to volunteer at local charities In total, the teams donated 582 volunteer hours and you can watch our teams in action in a highlights video on the big screens.
Off the track, we invite you to visit the Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA, where you can take your pick from over 160 different beers, ciders and perries, located at the east end of the Grandstand.
We look forward to welcoming you back here on Saturday 19th October for QIPCO British Champions Day, the climax of the British Flat season and our final Flat fixture of 2024.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The BetMGM Rous Stakes (Listed Race)
This five furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 3lb for colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 2.25pm
The BetMGM Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Group 3)
This one mile and four furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.
PAGES 26-28
3rd Race 3.00pm
The John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes (Group 3)
Just like the previous contest, this is also a Group 3 race but over six furlongs In a Group 3 race, runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things in the future.
PAGES 32-35
4th Race 3.35pm
The BetMGM Challenge Cup Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 40-42
5th Race 4.10pm
The McGee Group British EBF October Stakes (Listed Race)
This seven furlong race is another at Listed level but this time is limited to fillies and mares Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, three-year-olds are set to carry 9st, while four year olds and upwards will carry 9st 2lb, before any penalties are applied.
PAGES 46-48
6th Race 4.45pm
The Berkshire Healthcare Charity Handicap Stakes
This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Official BHA Rating 107
20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

To raise awareness for World Mental Health Day which takes place on 10th October 2024, this week we ran two private racecourse tours and a meet-and-greet with Side Glance – our equine ambassador – for those suffering with dementia. There are many benefits to equine therapy, including improving nonverbal communication skills and boosting confidence, and having Side Glance interact with people facing mental health challenges has proven hugely successful in previous events we have hosted within the community.
Today, we are also hosting the Berkshire Healthcare Charity who is raising awareness and funds for mental health support in the region. Its “health bus” is located on the concourse level of the Parade Ring so please feel free to pop in. Hear from the charity below.
Berkshire Healthcare Charity: Help Us Raise £4,000 for Mental Health Support
Berkshire Healthcare Charity is dedicated to enhancing the lives of patients and their families across Berkshire by providing vital support that extends beyond standard healthcare services. As the official charity of Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, we strive to improve the well-being of those under our care by funding projects and services that elevate the patient experience and offer much-needed support to families
This October and November, we have a crowdfunding campaign to raise £4,000, to be match-funded by Sport England. The funds will be used to purchase a new Cardio Wall for Prospect Park, our inpatient mental health hospital. This innovative piece of equipment will be a key component of our Motion in Mind appeal, focusing on promoting physical activity as a means of improving mental health. The Cardio Wall will provide patients with an engaging and interactive way to incorporate movement into their recovery, helping to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety while boosting overall mood and resilience.
Your support is crucial in helping us achieve these goals By contributing to our crowdfunder, you can make a real difference in the lives of patients and their families across Berkshire.

The classy AL AASY (first) readily got the better of Al Qareem (second) when the pair met over an extended 1m5f in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in August and, with the step back in trip unlikely to hinder the son of Sea The Stars, he gets the nod to land the spoils once more. Hamish arrives on the back of a couple of below-par efforts at Newmarket and Kempton, but he doubtless has the ability to play a hand in a race of this nature and merits consideration on the comeback trail.

2023: INSPIRAL 4 9 5 Frankie Dettori 10-11 (John & Thady Gosden) 8 ran
BETTING FORECAST: correct as of 12:00pm 05/10/24
9-4 Tamfana (GER), 3-1 Inspiral (GB), 7-2 Nashwa (GB), See The Fire (GB), 8-1 Elmalka (GB), 40-1 Darnation (IRE)
INSPIRAL was imperious in this race 12 months ago and would be hard to beat if she recaptures that level of form. The daughter of Frankel acts with juice in the ground and can be expected to have been primed for back-to-back wins. Stable companion Nashwa is no back number and adds depth to the race Tamfana (fourth) and Elmalka (winner) are closely matched on the 1000 Guineas form and the former might be able to turn the tables.

ENGLISH OAK: Following its run on 20/9/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right; also lost a shoe. 2023: ANNAF (IRE) 4 9 4 Rossa Ryan 5-2 (Michael Appleby) 10 ran
BETTING FORECAST: correct as of 12:00pm 04/10/24
3-1 Jarraaf (GB), 5-1 English Oak (GB), Purosangue (GB), 6-1 Vadream (GB), 9-1 Adaay In Devon (GB), 10-1 Apollo One (GB), Wiltshire (GB), 12-1 Korker (IRE), 16-1 Russet Gold (GB)
The unexposed JARRAAF impressed when giving weight and a beating to three subsequent winners over C&D in August. Although this is more demanding, he looks to improving at a rate of knots and it would be no surprise if he were able to make it a hat-trick of victories. Purosangue bumped into a thriving sprinter when finishing a close-up second over 6f at York latest and another bold bid is forecast, while Wiltshire didn’t get the rub of the green when runner-up over the minimum trip at Haydock last month and he must enter calculations back at 6f

RACE SUMMARY
AKKADIAN THUNDER caught the eye when staying on to take the silver medal home in this grade over track and trip last month and a 2lb rise might prove to be on the lenient side for that effort. David O’Meara’s four-year-old showed his versatility in regards to ground on that occasion and has lots in his favour to go one better. Volterra was only beaten a length into second at York in August and he is one to take seriously off 4lb higher. Germanic and Qirat are others to consider in a wide-open heat.

RACE SUMMARY
Elim beat Queen Of Mougins (third) and Key To Cotai (seventh) when just being touched off by a length into second in a Group 3 event at Doncaster last time and he is expected to confirm that form to go close However, it may pay to side with HOPEFUL, who produced a career-best effort to fill the runner-up spot in the Kensington Palace here in June and she might have plenty more to offer. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old has shown enough pace to cope with this drop in trip and she gets the nod. Ornellaia completes the shortlist.
The Ascot Shop offers a stylish range of exclusive collections from luxury brands, on the day essentials, and perfect gifts and mementos from the world’s finest racecourse.
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

Venture Capital accounted for Haymaker (second) when making it two wins from his last three starts at Doncaster last time and he could continue to improve through the ranks over this distance. However, the vote goes to CAJETAN, who may have been worth more than the winning margin suggests at Kempton in May and he is only 5lb higher for that triumph. The son of Advertise makes only his third handicap start and he could be good enough for this contest. Vintage Clarets is another to note.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
