C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E
Welcome to the first day of the CopyBet November Racing Weekend. Our thanks go to CopyBet for their generous sponsorship of this two-day meeting as well as three races on today’s card, including the feature £35,000 CopyBet Handicap Chase over 2m5f.
Other racing highlights include Gin Coco bidding for back-to-back victories in the LK Bennett Autumn Collection Handicap Hurdle while some exciting novices line up in the Troy Asset Management ‘Introductory’ Hurdle including the highly-touted Celtic Dino As ever, we extend our gratitude to race sponsors Troy Asset Management and LK Bennett for their continued support of Ascot.
Off the track, there is plenty to get involved with as Great British Racing host their annual Racecourse Ownership Days at Ascot today and tomorrow. Frankie Foster will be on course hosting a range of talks on shared ownership options, and around 15 syndicates and shared ownership representatives will be available to speak to.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings and today we are honoured to welcome D-Day veterans Norman Bartlett, Dorothea Barron and Marie Scott, who will present the trophies for our final race, The Not Forgotten Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race. The Not Forgotten is an important charity which has been supporting veterans since 1920 – today, we host our annual lunch for 30 of their beneficiaries and there will be bucket collectors on site throughout the day.
We are also pleased to host the Careers in Racing Explore Racing Day today where 30 guests will gain a behind-the-scenes experience of what a raceday at Ascot looks like from a broadcast and media point of view, with insight from Sky Sports Racing and RaceTech. In addition, we are hosting 60 students from Oldfield Primary School, Maidenhead through Racing to School - we hope you all enjoy your day.
We look forward to welcoming you back here tomorrow where our highlight Grade 2 races both feature last year’s winners – Pic D’Orhy in the CopyBet 1965 Chase and Blueking D’Oroux in the Howden Ascot Hurdle – and we also host the inaugural Berkshire National Handicap Chase, sponsored by 1st Class Logistics.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RACING PAGES
Your guide to all of today’s races
The Safer Gambling Week ‘National Hunt’ Maiden Hurdle
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, three furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 12.55pm
The CopyBet Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile and three furlong novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards.
PAGES 24-25
3rd Race 1.30pm
The Troy Asset Management Introductory Hurdle
An Introductory Hurdle is a race which is restricted to horses which have not previously run in more than one hurdle race. This particular one mile, seven and a half furlong contest is for four-year-olds and upwards. The weights are initially set at 11st 2lb for each runner with fillies and mares receiving a 7lb allowance from their male rivals However, any runner that was successful on their first start will be allocated a 5lb penalty
PAGES 26-27
4th Race 2.05pm
The CopyBet Handicap Chase
This is a two mile and five furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than their lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170
PAGES 30-32
5th Race 2.40pm
The LK Bennett Autumn Collection Handicap Hurdle
This is a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140.
PAGES 36-38
6th Race 3.15pm
The CopyBet UK Handicap Chase
This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb
PAGES 42-43
7th Race 3.50pm
The Not Forgotten
Open National Hunt Flat Race
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred to, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are unable to enter. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four & five and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs

Official BHA Rating 162
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY
MILAN TINO will find this easier than the Grade 3 events he contested in France last month. The son of Milan is still of low mileage and having finished a respectable sixth when sent off favourite for the Boodles at the Cheltenham Festival when last seen on these shores. He could be hard to beat at this level. With both Oak Grove and Marvellous Mick needing to find improvement, the promising First Confession may be the biggest threat to the selection. Oak Grove can fill the last position.

RACE SUMMARY
The 14-length success posted by CELTIC DINO on his hurdles debut at Wincanton last month suggests the Sam Thomas-trained gelding has the potential to significantly build on the promise he showed by winning two of his three starts in bumpers. With Nothing To Sea, Wade Out and Joyeuse also picking up penalties, this should be an informative event. With the first-named of that quartet feared most, followed by Wade Out who won at short odds on debut.

RACE SUMMARY
TERRESITA enjoyed a productive campaign last term and looked the likely winner when coming down two from home in a hot Sandown handicap. Lucy Wadham’s progressive mare made amends in a Listed event on her return to action at Carlisle and appears the one to be with, despite her career-high mark. Nocte Volatus arrives in search of a hat-trick and must enter calculations off 5lb higher than for his game Chepstow victory. Persian Time is better than he showed over 2m2f at Kempton and he merits respect.

RACE SUMMARY
BREAK MY SOUL still appears to be learning on the job and looked the likely winner before being denied in the shadows of the post over C&D on her return. Upped 4lb but with the promise of more improvement to come, she gets the vote to atone for that near-miss. Recent comfortable Newbury scorer Aurigny Mill is a danger, for all that a 7lb rise asks a question of him. Gin Coco completes the shortlist off just 2lb higher than when taking this prize 12 months ago.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.
For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.
More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty
generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY
REGARDE scored quite comfortably in the end at Kempton and the stiff nature of Ascot should play to his strengths as he attempts to notch up a fourth win over fences. A 6lb rise could prove lenient and he is preferred to Regatta De Blanc, who will appreciate a return to the larger obstacles having let down odds-on backers on her Chepstow reappearance. Law Of Supply scored on soft ground at Worcester in good style and he completes the shortlist.

Supporting veterans and serving military personnel struggling with injury, illness or isolation.
We are delighted to welcome back beneficiaries of The Not Forgotten, a 104-year-old charity supporting over 10,000 sick and injured veterans and military personnel each year through a programme of events which improve physical and mental health, combat isolation and loneliness and promote a sense of community and camaraderie.
Its presence today is especially poignant given the 80th anniversary of D-Day this year and we are honoured to have three remarkable veterans who played their own fascinating part in D-Day operations with us – Norrie, Marie and Dorothea - whom you can read more about below as we hear from The Not Forgotten:
There are an estimated 2.4 million veterans living in the UK today, many thousands of whom are living with injury or illness and often crippling loneliness. Serving members of our Armed Forces likewise struggle when faced with a life-changing injury or medical diagnosis.
For 104 years, The Not Forgotten has been reaching out to and supporting service-people and veterans living with injury, illness and isolation by providing social events, respite breaks and challenges all around the UK and abroad.
These events provide a lifeline. Improving physical and mental health but also building confidence, reducing isolation and re-establishing support and camaraderie for those who desperately miss that sense of belonging.
Norman ‘Norrie’ Bartlett
Norrie joined the Royal Navy in 1942 just shy of his 17th birthday. On D-Day in June 1944, he was a gunner on the warship HMS Duncan, firing at the German lines from offshore as the British troops landed on the beaches. He then helped get the injured back to Portsmouth and to escort ships full of replacement equipment back to Normandy
Ever humble about his role in that historic campaign Norrie says “We just thought we were doing a job and we did it the best we could. There was no heroics about it.
“We lost a lot of guys over there. When you see them getting shot, you know, it’s hard. There are so many memories of those guys - they had a very tough time.”
Marie Scott
Marie joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (known as the ‘Wrens’) in 1943 aged 17 - her skills as a trained switchboard operator meant her young age was overlooked - and she was deployed as a radio operator in the top-secret underground communications tunnels at Southwick House, Portsmouth – the nerve centre for D-Day. She was taught hurriedly how to operate the new VHF radio system and was at the forefront of radio communications with the Normandy beaches, relaying messages directly from the boats and beaches to Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery in the room next to her.
Marie says she will never forget the terrifying sounds she heard over the radio: “Every time they lifted their little leaver to respond, you could hear gunfire, bombs, men shouting; the mayhem of war. It frightened me, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, and suddenly you realise this is a war, men are dying there. I’ll never forgot those sounds coming down into my ear.”
Dorothea Barron
Dorothea served as a visual signaller in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (the ‘Wrens’). Lying about her height (by putting padding in her shoes and doing her hair up!), she joined up in 1943 aged 18 and was posted to Scotland to train men bound for Normandy how to use semaphore signalling and Morse code. She spent her days in a control tower inundated by Atlantic storm waves signalling messages to boat crews in training – a vital role in ensuring the imminent D-Day operations went as planned.
She said: “We didn’t know it, but we were training people pre-invasion. You never ever disclosed what your job was. We discovered later we were training the boat crews who were taking the men off the big liners in the Channel and ferrying them to the Normandy beaches I feel very proud that we’re still remembering those people that gave their youth for their country. I always want to cry in remembering my youthful friends who were killed during the war. I feel very proud that I did my bit for my country.”
In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 3.45pm race “The Not Forgotten Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race” and have invited the veterans and Lieutenant Colonel James Tedder to present trophies to winning connections on the podium. The charity is also our nominated bucket collector, so please donate if you are able.

RACE SUMMARY
Paul Nicholls has already had one smart newcomer score in these colours this week and CALVINO has the potential to be another The four-year-old is out of a mare who won a Listed race over fences for the stable and he may have enough to see off the experience of Blues Singer, who has a 4lb penalty to overcome for a taking debut success at Kempton in March. Kdeux Saint Fray must be monitored for market support as he starts out for shrewd connections.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
