C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E
Welcome to the second day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend.
This is our final meeting of 2024 which gives us the opportunity to reflect on another wonderful year of racing at Ascot. The Royal Meeting in particular delivered so many memorable moments from Asfoora winning the King Charles III Stakes for Australia to Kyprios regaining his Gold Cup crown.
We have also seen some top-class Jumping performances and are hoping for more of the same from today’s feature, the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. From Big Buck’s to Baracouda, some of the very best staying hurdlers have won this race. Today, Crambo, bids to become the sixth multiple winner of the race, joining the likes of Paisley Park and Reve De Sivola on that list.
We are immensely grateful to Howden for their continued support as an Official Partner at Ascot and as title sponsor of this weekend. We are also delighted to welcome Ladbrokes back as sponsor of the £125,000 two-mile handicap hurdle that concludes the card as well as Thames Materials who sponsor our opening race.
Off the track, there’s an abundance of seasonal fun for all with a range of festive entertainment including a Christmas Parade before racing and carol singing with the Ascot Brass Band afterwards.
It was fantastic to see Jumps racing back at Royal Windsor Racecourse last weekend and our first meeting of 2025, the BetMGM Clarence House Chase Raceday on Saturday 18th January, is the centrepiece of the three day inaugural Berkshire Winter Million in partnership with Windsor. Tickets allowing entry for all three days are available for just £40 and we hope you can join us for what should be an exciting weekend of racing.
Today is the last race meeting for Alastair Warwick who joined Ascot in 2008 and has served in several senior roles, most recently as Chief Executive. On Monday he was granted the honour of a Farewell Audience at Windsor Castle with His Majesty The King, who invested him with the Insignia of a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order. This was thoroughly deserved and I would like to express my thanks to Alastair for all his efforts on Ascot’s behalf over the past sixteen years. We all wish him and his family well for the future.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Thames Materials Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race
This is a two mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upward novices, rated 0-120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170
PAGES 20-21
2nd Race 1.15pm
The Howden Handicap Steeple Chase
This is a two mile, two and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.
PAGES 26-27
3rd Race 1.50pm
The Howden Graduation Steeple Chase
A Graduation Chase is simply a race for horses that have yet to win more than twice over fences This particular two mile and five furlong contest is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to previous winners, depending on the class of race won - these range from 4lb to 7lb

4th Race 2.25pm
The Howden Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1)
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards to be run just over three miles Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premiership in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance.
PAGES 36-37
5th Race 3.00pm
The Howden Silver Cup Handicap Steeple Chase (Premier Handicap)
This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 3.35pm
The Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle Race (Premier Handicap)
Our finale is also a Premier Handicap but this time for the hurdlers. It’s a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards. Like the previous contest, this race has no rating restrictions attached to it so is not restricted to horses within a certain band. As such, higher rated horses can take part but they must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals
Ascot operates a strict over 18+ policy for the purchase of alcohol or betting. Racegoers over 18 can collect an 18+ wristband from any entrance or the information desk on the Grandstand Concourse with photographic proof of age.
LOST PEOPLE
Free wristbands are available from all entrances for children and vulnerable racegoers to aid with a lost child/person. If this situation does arise, racegoers are encouraged to contact the nearest steward who will assist.

21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

The very warmest of welcomes to our third Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. They say all good things come in threes and this year we’ve got three wonderful things to celebrate.
First and foremost, we’ll be cheering on some fantastic sport with six races on the card each day. As ever the highlight will be Saturday’s Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. I can’t wait to see the winning horse cross the finish line and cheer their connections as they lift their trophies.
Second, we’re celebrating an incredible year of racing. We only need to think back to a golden summer at Royal Ascot. We witnessed incredible performances, surprises galore and some shockingly good weather!
And, while this is the fifth year of our supremely successful partnership with Ascot, one of the crown jewels of British horse racing, our commitment to the sport is now truly global. I’m hugely proud that we now sponsor some of the world’s most iconic race meetings including the VRC in Australia and the Bahrain Turf Club, among others.
But there’s a third reason we’re celebrating today. We’re also anticipating all the exciting events coming down the track. Big things are happening, and it starts today with the launch of our Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP). Instead of putting ex-racehorses out to pasture, we’re going to ensure owners have the information and skills they need to make sure those horses enjoy a second life – retraining them and giving them other opportunities. Who knows? Perhaps they’ll even make it as world class event horses I certainly hope so I’m as passionate about eventing as I am about racing which is why I have the great privilege of hosting the Cornbury House Horse Trials in Oxfordshire at my home.
Of course, I’ve barely “tapped” the surface of what’s to come. 2025 will truly be a bumper year of sport for Howden. Not least because we’re proud principal partners of the legendary British & Irish Lions who tour Australia for the first time in more than a decade. As the players run onto the pitch and the great “sea of red” rises to applaud them, it will be the Howden name on those iconic red jerseys. And we’re also backing the first ever Women’s Lions Tour to follow in New Zealand in 2027.
So let’s toast the end of a magnificent year Enjoy the weekend. Have fun cheering on the winners with your family. Pop a few champagne corks and celebrate the end of 2024 in style. Meanwhile, I’ll look forward to seeing you back in 2025 Rested, ready and raring to make it another year to remember.

Golden Ambition justified favouritism in good style when recording a double at Lingfield on his latest outing and he should give a good account off a 6lb higher rating. However, CIRCUIT BREAKER gets the nod The son of Nathaniel was impressive when victorious on his first start over hurdles at Kempton before being beaten into third in a warmer event next time Judged on each of those efforts, he could be capable of defying an opening mark of 118 Just Lucky Sivola completes the shortlist.

A winner of three of her last five starts in this sphere, Fromheretoeternity cannot be ruled out either.

Trial Royal Ascot Lunch 220 STAFF MEMBERS invited from 28 LOCAL CHARITIES

N I G H T S H E L T E R
Today, we are delighted to announce 3-year legacy funding for Windsor Homeless Project under the umbrella of Alma Beacon, a Windsor-based homeless charity, to help run its night shelter which will operate from January-March 2025 The shelter will be run from its base in Alma Road and offer up to 15 homeless guests warm food, company and bed/breakfast during the cold months ahead.
Alma Beacon encompasses three vital projects that provide essential support to the vulnerable members of our local community. These projects are Windsor Street Angels, Windsor Homeless Project and Windsor Foodshare, and whilst some activities continue to operate from other locations, they remain an integral part of Alma Beacon.
Ascot Racecourse has worked with the charity since 2019, making annual donations of food or funding at Christmas and most recently by volunteering at the charity as part of our annual staff volunteers’ week in September.
Monies donated form part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports Legacy Fund which originated from the Britannia Stakes initiative run by the Betting & Gaming Council at Royal Ascot which saw bookmaker profits from the race donated to nominated charities of which our fund was a beneficiary.
Other legacy funding has included the introduction of our dedicated sensory room, sponsorship of a new arena for Strength & Learning through Horses, Barnet, who run equine assisted therapy sessions and funding towards a new classroom for Heros who offer a range of education programmes as an alternative to school placements at their retraining and rehoming for ex-racehorse facility in Wantage.
As part of our wider support for the homeless this year, our staff have also hand-wrapped Christmas gifts, such as thermal socks and gloves, for all guests at the Windsor Homeless Project and Slough Homeless our Concern.
Windsor Homeless Project is also our nominated bucket collector today, so please support if you are able.

RACE SUMMARY
SCARFACE had Galop De Chasse (third) a length behind when filling the runner-up spot in this grade at Newbury last month, and he should be able to confirm his authority over that rival as they compete on the same terms. Joe Tizzard’s seven-year-old is a previous course winner and it would be no surprise to see him go one better. Prince Quali finished third at Newbury last time and may go well, while Kotmask isn’t out of it either

RACE SUMMARY
East Street has notched up three wins from four starts for this stable and he is of interest back at the scene of his latest victory, however a career-high mark does pose a question of James Owen’s eight-yearold. With that in mind, a chance is taken on FRENCHY DU LARGE. Venetia Williams’ charge was the subject of market support when only finding one rival too good on his return from an absence at Ludlow earlier this month. That effort should have teed him up nicely for a tilt at this and, off 3lb higher, he looks the one to be with. Jacks Parrot and Famous Bridge are a couple of others to consider

RACE SUMMARY
STRONG LEADER followed up his Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle success with a cosy win in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last month and could again be hard to beat However, The Wallpark is progressive and looks a serious player as he bids to round out a five-timer Last year’s winner Crambo is unbeaten at this venue and cannot be ruled out, while the Haydock scorer Shoot First is still developing as a stayer and is another to note

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.
For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.
More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty
generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

6-4 Victtorino (FR), 9-2 The Changing Man (IRE), 5-1 Trelawne (GB), 8-1 Heloy Delabarriere (FR), 11-1 Flegmatik (FR), 12-1 Threeunderthrufive (IRE), 14-1 Two For Gold (IRE), 16-1 Hartur d’Arc (FR)
RACE SUMMARY
VICTTORINO was a game winner of this race 12 months ago and must have every chance of retaining his crown from just 1lb higher. A creditable third off this mark in the Coral Gold Cup three weeks ago, the Venetia Williams-trained gelding gets the vote. Trelawne got his season off to a flyer at Haydock last month and, unexposed over this trip, he looks the chief threat. Rehearsal Chase runner-up The Changing Man and the consistent French-raider Heloy Delabarriere are other strong contenders.

RACE SUMMARY
DYSART ENOS has been reliable as well as profitable to follow under Rules. Although she found a couple too good in a strong renewal of the Greatwood at Cheltenham last month, her third-placed finish that day was still a solid foundation to build on here. Be Aware was one place in front of the selection in that race and although respected, might struggle to uphold the form off 3lb worse terms. The unbeaten Kabral Du Mathan and Secret Squirrel complete the shortlist.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
