C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E
Welcome to QIPCO King George Day.
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes was officially the fourth best race in the world in 2023 and this year’s renewal is another high-class contest with six Group 1 winners in the line-up. Auguste Rodin heads the field once again and comes into this year’s race after an impressive victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The globetrotting Rebel’s Romance brings Group 1-winning form from four different countries, while Dubai Honour has also tasted top-level success in Australia and France. The Coronation Cup victor Luxembourg and Bluestocking, the recent winner of the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh, add further depth and quality. Sunway carries the flag for the three-year-olds after his second place in the Irish Derby.
We are delighted to offer £1.25 million in prize money for our mid-summer feature, and would like to thank QIPCO for their support of this race since 2014. Although the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes will have a new sponsor in 2025, we are delighted that QIPCO has extended its long standing commitment as an Official Partner of Ascot until 2026.
The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes trophy will be on display in the Grandstand before racing with the Melbourne Cup as part of its global tour We would like to extend our gratitude to the Victoria Racing Club for making the visit of this iconic three-handled cup possible.
This year’s QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls Award will be presented before racing to a member of the Cole family, Paul Cole trained Generous to a dazzling victory in the 1991 renewal of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The winning margin of seven lengths was a record at the time and has only been bettered once in the race’s 73-year history, by Harbinger in 2010.
The supporting card features Group action with the Sodexo Live! Princess Margaret Stakes and the Longines Valiant Stakes while the Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes is always a race worth following having been won last year by Rosallion, this year’s St James’s Palace Stakes winner. We would also like to thank today’s other race sponsors, the British EBF, Betfred and Whispering Angel.
Our next meeting is the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on August 10th, with jockeys from across the world set to compete in this unique team-based event. We hope you can join us then.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

The British EBF Crocker Bulteel
“Confined” Maiden Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds which have not run more than once. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory, most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 1.50pm
The Sodexo Live!
Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3)
This six furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, and 5lb for a Group 1 or 2 success.
PAGES 28-29
3rd Race 2.25pm
The Longines
Valiant Stakes (Group 3)
The third race on today’s card is also a Group 3 contest, this time over a one mile trip This specific race is for fillies and mares aged three-years and upwards. Initially, each of the fillies or mares will be allocated a weight depending on age before any penalties are awardedthree-year-olds will carry 8st 11lb, while four-year-olds and upwards will carry 9st 5lb If a horse has won a Pattern contest after 2023, they will receive the following penalty - 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb to Group 2 winners and 7lb to Group 1 winners
PAGES 32-35
4th Race 3.00pm
The Moët & Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 42-44
5th Race 3.40pm
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (Group 1)
(British Champions Series)
This one mile and four furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest, the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the large levels of prize money available. Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud.
PAGES 46-47
6th Race 4.15pm
The Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes
(Listed Race) (Formerly The Winkfield Stakes)
This seven furlong contest for two-year-olds is a Listed race, a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 contest. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rivals before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern race success.
PAGES 50-52
7th Race 4.50pm
The Betfred Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100
PAGES 54-56
8th Race 5.25pm
The Whispering Angel Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races

Moët & Chandon has been associated with the equestrian world since 1908 when two three-year-old horses, one named “Moët” and the other “Chandon”, belonging to Monsieur Alfred Simon, the House’s sales representative in London, finished first in Epsom and Newbury respectively. That same year, “Moët” ran fourth in the Hunt Cup at Ascot and as a result, Alfred Simon referred to it as his “lucky” race.
The House’s passion for horse racing was further brought to life in 2019, when Moët & Chandon became the ‘Official Champagne of Ascot’. Ascot and Moët & Chandon already share a long-standing legacy filled with exceptional celebratory moments, and we invite you to toast to yet another iconic racing weekend together at the QIPCO King George Weekend. Please enjoy Moët & Chandon responsibly. www.moet.com

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

20. Weight (stones/pounds)
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
On behalf of QIPCO it is a real privilege to welcome you to Ascot for QIPCO King George Day, featuring one of the greatest races in the international racing calendar
Our investment company first became the commercial sponsor of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes back in 2014 and the race has maintained its historic position as the highlight of midsummer and the ultimate test of the generations between the mile and a half champions
During this time, we have been treated to some special memories, led by the record-breaking three wins by the incredible mare Enable, and thrilling finishes including last year’s race, where Hukum beat Westover by just a head. Once again, we should be in for a fascinating international encounter as part of a card full of high-class and competitive action.
QIPCO became Ascot’s first ever commercial partner ten years ago and we look forward to maintaining the relationship as we look ahead to QIPCO British Champions Day in October.
Racing is in our family’s blood and we are continuing to take an active interest in ownership and breeding, with stallions and broodmares based at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire.
We have not been fortunate enough to have won the King George just yet but are represented this afternoon by our homebred Middle Earth and an interest in Sunway, who ran so well to finish runner-up in the Irish Derby.
We are also excited for the future as Kameko, our brilliant victor of the 2000 Guineas in 2020, continues to show huge promise with his first crop of runners this season.
I would like to wish you all a successful and enjoyable afternoon.

Back In Black lost nothing in defeat when finishing runner-up behind a potentially useful sort at Yarmouth on his debut in May and he should be thereabouts once more with the promise of more to come. That said, AL MISBAR edges preference. The Blue Point half-brother to Battaash cost 1.5m guineas as a yearling and represents the red-hot Charlie Appleby and William Buick combination. Echalar and Fire Flame are also considered first time out.

RACE SUMMARY
MANDURAH impressed when scoring at Newmarket on debut, travelling well before putting the race to bed in a matter of strides, and she gets the nod to make it two wins from as many starts for her in-form stable. Simmering was beaten less than a length into second in the Albany so must enter calculations, while Betty Clover has shown enough to suggest that she can be competitive in a race of this nature and can outrun her forecast odds now tackling 6f for the first time

RACE SUMMARY
SIRONA has done little wrong since joining the David Menuisier stable, posting two admirable placed efforts over 7f before finishing a staying-on fifth in the Falmouth. In calmer waters here, this progressive four-year-old can make a bold bid to give weight and a beating to some younger rivals. Dangers are aplenty, though, and the unbeaten Listed winner Devoted Queen is feared most, while Sandringham heroine Soprano showed she is still in form when third in the Coral Distaff at Sandown.

Each year, to mark QIPCO’s sponsorship of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the winner of a vintage renewal is commemorated. To honour his illustrious achievements and record-breaking victory in the race 33 years ago, GENEROUS became the latest recipient of the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award, won last year by Lammtarra.
Trained by Paul Cole at Whatcombe in Oxfordshire, Generous raced in the colours of HRH Prince Fahd Salman after being bought at Goffs for 200,000 Irish guineas. He won on his racecourse debut at Ascot, quickly followed by a second-placed effort in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and would go on to record two more victories as a two-year-old, including when taking the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at odds of 50/1.
His three-year-old career would showcase his true talents as a middle-distance maestro, winning the Derby at Epsom and then the Irish Derby in quick succession. However, it
was the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory that proved just how remarkable a racehorse he was, becoming only the sixth horse to complete that treble.
Generous was the 4/6 favourite for Ascot’s 1991 renewal of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Partnered by jockey Alan Munro, Generous won a fast-paced race by an impressive seven lengths which was the largest winning margin for the race at the time, despite being eased down approaching the line. The manner of his triumph cemented his status of being the best three-year-old in Europe that season, while the margin of victory has only been bettered once in the race’s 73-year history.
Generous won both the British and Irish Horse of the Year awards in 1991, as well as being the Timeform top-rated horse for the year with a rating of 139 – at the time, the joint-11th highest figure rating ever.
After a memorable and very successful career on the track, Generous retired to stand at Banstead Manor in Newmarket as a dual-purpose stallion. Generous stood in Japan in 1996, and in 1999 joined Westbury Stud in New Zealand to stand alongside leading stallion at the time, Faltaat. He finished his stallion career at Alfred Buller’s Scarvagh House Stud in Northern Ireland having sired 280 individual winners, including 31 stakes winners. He died in 2013 at the age of 25 and is remembered as one of the all-time greats.

RACE SUMMARY
Hickory outran odds of 50/1 when second in this 12 months ago. Northern Express, who often goes well in this type of contest, and Fresh, who is 7lb lower than when taking this in 2022, are others to note Aalto is 4lb well-in having recorded a comfortable success in the Bunbury Cup Carrytheone met trouble when fourth in that race, having also struggled to gain a clear passage in the Buckingham Palace (third), a race which saw Billyjoh fill the runner-up spot. METAL MERCHANT travelled strongly into contention when seventh in the Hunt Cup before fading on soft ground at Sandown, and he could represent some value now dropped in trip.

THE KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH QIPCO STAKES
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes is Europe’s indisputable midsummer middle-distance showpiece and one of the most prestigious prizes in racing. In 2023, it was officially rated the fourth best race in the world by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities in their Longines World’s Top 100 Group 1 Races for three-year-olds and upwards. The contest has been won by some of the sport’s most legendary names and to this day attracts the best horses in training to compete for a place among the greats.
The race was founded in 1951, when two existing races were merged to create a premier mile-and-a-half contest for three-year-olds and upwards. Major John Crocker Bulteel, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course at the time and one of the most forward-thinking racing figures of his day, envisaged the ‘King George’ as a championship race that would draw considerable international support. Sure enough, from its earliest days it attracted participants of the very highest calibre from across Europe and soon established itself as the principal mid-season weight-for-age test for middle-distance horses It is also significant in giving the Classic generation one
of the first opportunities to take on their elders in what often proves to be a thrilling clash of the generations Three-year-olds carry 8st 12lb compared to the 9st 9lb allocated to those aged four and above, while fillies and mares receive a 3lb allowance.
The inaugural running was worth £25,000, making it the most valuable race ever run in Britain. It attracted a stellar international field including the previous season’s Arc winner from France, Tantieme, and the Derby winner, Arctic Prince but the race was won by Supreme Court. The following two years saw that season’s Derby winner triumph, before Queen Elizabeth II’s colt Aureole delivered a famous royal victory in 1954. The undefeated Italian champion and dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Ribot won the 1956 renewal, his one and only start on British turf.
Lester Piggott was to enjoy the first three of his seven King George wins in the 1960s, the first coming aboard Irish Derby winner Meadow Court in 1965. However, his winning ride on Nijinsky in 1970 would mark the start of a particularly golden era in the race’s history across the subsequent two decades. The illustrious son of Northern Dancer won the King George at a virtual canter the same
season as claiming the Triple Crown, a feat to have eluded every other colt to have attempted since.
Another outstanding Derby winner landed the spoils just a year later, as Mill Reef swept to victory in 1971 en route to a decisive Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win. The 1975 renewal, often since described as ‘The Race of the Century’, provided one of the most thrilling finishes of all time, as Grundy and Bustino locked horns in a titanic battle to the line, smashing the course record in the process
Following a sensational ten-length Derby victory in the hands of 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, which he followed up in the Irish equivalent, Shergar was an emphatic winner in 1981, giving trainer Sir Michael Stoute the first of his record six King George wins Later that decade came victories for two more greats – the subsequent Arc hero Dancing Brave (1986) and the brilliant Nashwan (1989), the only horse to have won the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse and King George in the same season.
The 1995 renewal went to Lammtarra and Frankie Dettori, with the horse completing the middle leg of a star-studded three-year-old career treble, bookended by victory in the Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
After claiming the 50th renewal aboard Montjeu, Mick Kinane partnered the dual Derby champion Galileo to defeat the high-class five-year-old Fantastic Light the following year. Aidan O’Brien’s first King
George winner went on to become the dominant stallion of his era before passing away in 2021, siring a record number of Group 1 winners including the incomparable Frankel as well as Highland Reel and Nathaniel who both won the King George.
In 2010, Harbinger stunned Ascot with a breathtaking 11-length King George victory, the biggest winning margin in the race’s history He also broke the course record set by Grundy in that epic finish of 35 years previously, but it was only another three years before a new record time was posted, when Novellist became the second Germantrained winner in as many years, following Danedream’s success in 2012.
More recently, the John Gosden-trained Enable made history by winning the race for a third time in 2020. Her victory in 2019 has been billed as a ‘Race for the Ages’ as she narrowly prevailed in a thrilling duel with the gallant Crystal Ocean. After victory over Sovereign and Japan in 2020 she now stands as the only horse to have won the race three times and in doing so she provided her jockey Frankie Dettori with a seventh victory in the race, equalling Lester Piggott’s tally. Last year, Hukum prevailed in a thrilling duel with Westover to give trainer Owen Burrows and jockey Jim Crowley their first victories in this historic race.
Whichever of today’s runners adds their name to the King George roll of honour, we can look forward to another exceptional and exciting renewal of this magnificent race.

RACE SUMMARY
Auguste Rodin, a six-time winner at the highest level including in last year’s Derby, will be tough to beat following his triumph in the Prince Of Wales’s here, but REBEL’S ROMANCE shades preference. Charlie Appleby’s globetrotter took the Sheema Classic at Meydan before going on to notch up further Group 1 success in Hong Kong. The son of Dubawi appears to have come into his own this year and it would be no surprise were he to continue his upward trajectory. Bluestocking is another who seems to have matured this season and is worth considering in receipt of 3lb from her main market rivals. Sunway was slightly unfortunate in the Prix du Jockey Club before finishing an excellent second in the Irish Derby and is also noted.

RACE SUMMARY
A taking winner on his return from a 317-day break at Newcastle, ELNAJMM remains unexposed after just five career outings and this track should suit as he looks to follow up off 10lb higher. Sterling Knight narrowly got the better of Tempus when scoring at Newmarket and can uphold that form, despite being 1lb worse off Tolstoy arrives on a four-timer and could improve for the step up to a mile, while Great Blasket has strong claims as well

RACE SUMMARY
An unlucky loser when repeatedly short of room and eventually finishing second over C&D, ALBASHEER looks the one to beat, granted a clearer run on this occasion. The six-year-old has been winless on turf since last August, but he can put the record straight against the likes of C&D winner Woolhampton and Woodhay Wonder, who was on a five-timer when a fine fourth at the Royal meeting here. Pepsi Cat and Brave Nation can also have a say.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
