WELCOME TO AYR
WELCOME to the greatest day’s jumps racing in Scotland – Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday. These words make me particularly proud this year as it is the first time in three years that I have been in a position to welcome what is always the biggest crowd of year to Ayr Racecourse. It is a tremendous feeling to look forward to the very special occasion the Coral Scottish Grand National is and the superb atmosphere that will prevail around the track, be it your first as a student or indeed your 20th as an old hand. We have a special rendition of Flower of Scotland performed by the very talented Siobhan McAuley just before the big race be sure to join in and help build the atmosphere. You must experience the Coral Virtual Race Experience adjacent to the paddock. It is the first time in the UK that it has been available see what it’s like being a jockey. But, of course, the reason that we are all here is for the feature race: The Coral Scottish Grand National. We have been blessed once again with a high class field of horses ridden by some of the finest jockeys in the land, and the roar that will greet them as they come up the home straight for the final time will be something special. For such a great race we require a special sponsor and we certainly have that in Coral who first sponsored the Scottish Grand National in 2007. Their support over the years has seen the race grow and blossom into one of the true highlights of the jumps season in Britain. Coral also sponsor the main supporting race this afternoon: The Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle. It is the showpiece hurdle race in Scotland and once again has attracted a high calibre of runners and we are in for an excellent renewal of this contest. We are also grateful to our other sponsors on what is a fantastic afternoon of racing: Albert Bartlett, a long standing sponsor back supporting the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase and Jordan Electrics who have also been associated with the racecourse for many years support the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase. We welcome back CPMS who sponsor the exciting Novices’ Champion Chase, Tennent’s who support the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle and Trump Turnberry kindly sponsor the Hands & Heels Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Last but not least, thanks must go to the Golf Inn Prestwick for their support the National Hunt Flat race which has produced some classy winners over the years. A special mention to Ed Chamberlin and the entire ITV presentation team and crew who return to Ayr for the first time since September 2019. This afternoon would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the team here at Ayr and I thank them for helping make this one of the country’s great sporting occasions. Thank you all for being here today… welcome back and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day.
Ayr Racecourse is one of six Large Racecourses to be awarded the ROA Gold Standard Award.

TODAY’S JOCKEYS
TOP JOCKEYS
SAM TWISTON-DAVIES
TOM SCUDAMORE
Sam has two Coral Scottish Grand National wins to his name on Vicente in 2016 and 2017 and would dearly love to make it a third this season. He rides Fantastikas for his father Nigel in the feature race this afternoon and retains the ride on Milkwood in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle after the combination won the contest last year. It could be a big afternoon for the inform rider.
Tom rode Mighty Thunder to win last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National behind closed doors but if he were to repeat the feat today on the David Pipe-trained Via Dolorosa he will be cheered home by 15,000 racegoers. A stylish jockey who has been among our top riders for many years Tom has enjoyed other notable successes here over the years and will be hoping to retain the Coral Scottish Grand National today.
BRIAN HUGHES
SEAN QUINLAN
Brian is having an unforgettable season and approaching the milestone of 200 winners and he has a good book of rides this afternoon. These include Donald McCain’s Barrichello in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle and the same trainer’s Minella Drama in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Novices’ Chase. His mount in the Coral Scottish Grand National is the David Dennis-trained Innisfree Lad. It looks a busy day for the champion jockey elect and it could be another successful one.
Sean is onboard the veteran Vintage Clouds in the Coral Scottish Grand National, a race in which Sue Smith’s grey finished third in 2018 and seventh the following year behind Takingrisks, who was ridden that day by none other than Sean. He has already smashed his all-time seasonal total of winners and continues in great form.
HARRY SKELTON
RYAN MANIA
Harry has a superb record at this meeting and continued in that vein last year when partnering three winners, with the highlight coming on Allmankind in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase. Harry will again be riding the pick of his brother Dan’s runners this week and these include Ashtown Lad in the Coral Scottish Grand National and West Cork in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.
Ryan has had a successful season and will be looking to continue that this afternoon when his rides include The Ferry Master in the Coral Scottish Grand National for Sandy Thomson. The horse ran a huge race last year to finish fourth and is fancied to be there of thereabouts today. He could also go close on Bass Rock in the famous Ray Anderson green colours in the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle.
NICO DE BOINVILLE
DEREK FOX
Nico rides as number one jockey to Nicky Henderson and has enjoyed incredible success over the year, including some winners at this Festival. He rode Theinval to win the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase, Listed Race, on Coral Scottish Grand National day last year. He has one mount today on Dusart in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Chase, which is trained by Nicky Henderson and owned by Ronnie Bartlett.
Derek is enjoying a terrific season and capped it with a superb ride onboard Corach Rambler in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham. He rides a couple of course specialists this afternoon on Strong Economy in the Coral Scottish Grand National and Ardera Cross in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase.
TODAY’S TRAINERS
TOP TRAINERS
ALAN KING
CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS
Alan won the Coral Scottish Grand National Godsmejudge in 2013 and the Scottish Champion Hurdle in 2012 with Raya Star. He has two runners in today’s feature race with Major Dundee the mount of Tom Cannon and Fidux set to be ridden by Daryl Jacob. Alan would dearly love to emulate his success of nine years ago.
Christian is a young trainer fast making a name for himself and is double handed in today’s feature, the Coral Scottish Grand National, with the favourite Kitty’s Light and second favourite Win My Wings. He is enjoying his best ever season and a win in Scotland’s richest national hunt race would be the icing on the cake. He has made the long trip from Wales and will be hoping to head back home with the trophy.
DAN SKELTON
OLLY MURPHY
Since taking out his trainer’s licence in 2013 Dan has a 25 per cent strike rate at Ayr and he invariably targets this Festival. He has four horses in action today with his hopes in the Coral Scottish Grand National resting on Ashtown Lad. In the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle, a race he has won in the past, Dan saddles West Cork who must have an outstanding chance.
Olly has a particularly good strike rate here of 21 percent and he can improve on that this afternoon if The Wolf can lift the Coral Scottish Grand National. The eight-yearold has been in good form, being placed in some decent races and he should give a good account of himself this afternoon. His other runners include I K Brunel in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase.
PAUL NICHOLLS
NICKY HENDERSON
Another trainer who has an outstanding record at this fixture and who will be hoping that continues this week. He has saddled three winners of the Coral Scottish Grand National but is without a runner in today’s feature. That hasn’t stopped him sending a strong group of horses today, including Il Ridoto who runs in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.
Nicky has only one runner this afternoon and that is Dusart who carries top weight in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase. He has won two novice chases already this season and finished fifth behind L’Homme Presse in the Brown Advisory Chase at Cheltenham. He should be competitive today in what is an excellent renewal of this race.
SANDY THOMPSON
NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES
The Borders trainer went close in the Coral Scottish Grand National last year when Dingo Dollar finished second and The Ferry Master came fourth. The latter lines up again today and has an outstanding chance with Ryan Mania taking the mount. Sandy also runs top weight Hill Sixteen with young Irish jockey Mark McDonagh riding. On what could be a great afternoon for Sandy, his other runners include Doyen Breed in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase.
Nigel, like Paul Nicholls, has trained three winners of the Coral Scottish Grand National with Hello Bud (2009), Earth Summit (1994) and Captain Dibble (1992). He will be hoping for win number four this afternoon when he runs Fantastikas with son Sam in the plate. He must have a realistic chance of making it four.
LEADERBOARDS
BRIAN, RYAN AND SEAN LOCKED IN BATTLE SEVERAL riders go into the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival this week with a chance of being top jockey for the 2020-2021 season at Ayr. Brian Hughes leads the way by two points from Ryan Mania. Sean Quinlan is a further point away in third spot with Derek Fox and Conor O’Farrell also in contention. All five will be in action this weekend so it really is all to play for and of course we also have the leading protagonists for the British Jump Jockeys title with Brian Hughes, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden all with mounts. The Ayr Trainers Championship is also a tight affair with long-time leader Nick Alexander on 33 points, only a point to the good over Lucinda Russell, with Sandy Thomson five points further away in third and Nicky Richards on 26 points in fourth. In the Owners Championship Trevor Hemmings is in pole position four points clear of Mr and Mrs Duncan Davidson. Trevor has several runners this week including Vintage clouds in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

TOMMY MORTON 10 SEPTEMBER 1931 – 12 MARCH 2022 One of the true characters of the Betting Ring Tommy Morton sadly passed away after taking ill here at the track on March 12. Tommy, aged 90, spent 65 years working at Ayr and other Scottish courses and was a really well known face to all racegoers. Born in Govan, he went to Catterick aged 18 to complete his two years of National Service with the Army. Following that Tommy got a job at Butlins in Ayr as a cook where he met Margaret who was to become his wife. Tommy opened a grocers shop in Dorset Street in Glasgow and his customers included Billy Connolly and a young Lena Martell later to have a hit with One Day At A Time which was one of Tommy’s favourite songs. After betting shops became legal in 1961 Tommy opened his first shop in the Finnieston area of Glasgow and soon opened others in Kingston Street, St Vincent Street, Scotland Street, Govan Road and Baillieston. The Govan Road shop is still open today and run by his daughter Elaine. Right up until his death Tommy loved working, especially at Ayr, and he vowed he would never retire so it was fitting he passed away doing the job he loved at a course he loved and surrounded by close family, colleagues and friends. He was looking forward to the Coral Scottish Grand National which was the highlight of his year and he loved the camaraderie with bookies and punters alike. Tommy was predeceased by his wife Margaret and daughter Christine. Our condolences go to his daughter Elaine and sons Billy and John, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family would like to thank everyone for all the support and kind messages received over the last two weeks. Tommy will be greatly missed by the team at Ayr Racecourse and by the racing community in general.

RoR Parade – Scottish Gr
12.15pm – Retraining of R A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.15am to 12.30am, the parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features a host of familiar names, all who have raced here at Ayr and who have adapted to a new career, including the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National 2019 winner, Takingrisks. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball To donate, please scan the below QR code:

Sarah McGhee was entrusted with Bill in February 2019 by trainer, Nicky Richards and owners, David and Nicky Robinson following his retirement from racing. Sarah reports that the pair now enjoy doing unaffiliated showjumping, arena eventing, dressage, hunter trials and showing. In addition, Bill is also a devoted mentor to three racing ponies too, proving to be a sensible friend for them to work with, and ensuring Bill still gets the opportunity to go galloping plenty! 2. BRAES OF LOCHALSH - ridden by Kayleigh Williams 11-year-old by Tiger Hill, formerly trained by Jim Goldie Breeder – Jim Goldie Braes Of Lochalsh was formerly owned by Johnnie Delta Racing, for whom he raced a total of 48 times, including 26 times at Ayr, the track at which he won three of his four races at, with career earnings of over £36,000.Kayleigh Williams used to ride, look after, and travel with Braes of Lochalsh (aka Ozzy) when he was in training with Jim Goldie. Following his retirement in 2018, Jim offered Ozzy to Kayleigh and she jumped at the chance of owning him. She has taken her time and been patient with him as she says he can be quite stressy so everything is done at his pace and boy does he please! Last year they did some unaffiliated dressage and some ex-racehorse showing classes and the aim is to build on that this year. LAS TUNAS – ridden by Barbara Spittal 10-year-old by Country Reel, formerly trained by R Mike Smith Breeder – Mathieu Boutin In a racing career stretching over seven years, Las Tunas ran 73 times, winning nine times including victories on the flat, over hurdles and in steeplechases. They compete most weekends but Natalie says his favourite thing to do is jumping. ‘He is super brave and bold and looks after me all the time. TAKINGRISKS - ridden by Amy Corrado 13-year-old gelding by Golden Tornado, formerly trained by Nicky Richards Breeder – James Murray The career highlight for Takingrisks was victory in the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National when ridden by Sean Quinlan. The Sky Bet Handicap Chase at Doncaster in 2021 and the Betfair Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle in 2019 are also among his best performances from a career that saw him win nine races from 36 starts, earning just short of £300,00. Takingrisks is now a permanent resident at Nicky Richards’ yard at Rectory Farm. He is ridden out regularly and one of his new jobs is to lead the younger racehorses. 8. VERTIGO – ridden by Sharon Steele 14-year-old gelding by Jeremy, formerly trained by Lucinda Russell Breeder – Mrs Eithne Thompson Sharon Steele bought Vertigo, from his trainer, Lucinda Russell in 2018 following a racing career in which Vertigo won two races. Together they now compete in show-jumping and have had success arena eventing, and in working hunter and showing classes. In showjumping, Vertigo qualified for the RoR Bronze League finals 2021 at the BS National Championships and came 5th. They also qualified for the Amateur Showjumping Championships at Aintree in 2021 and were 2nd in the Arena Eventing at the Royal Highland Showcase. On their first attempt at Working Hunter, they have qualified for this year’s Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree.

FIRST RACE 1.15
THE SCOTTY BRAND HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (Listed Race) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles, about half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Listed status. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
2021 WINNER THEINVAL (FR)
SP: 6/1 Age/Weight: 11 11-3 Runners: 6 Jockey: Nico de Boinville Trainer: Nicky Henderson Summary: Theinval had run in the Hillhouse Quarry Chase the day before and when he won this race in 2018 he’d also had an outing on the opening day. This time, despite a poor jump at the first, he was always going easily and won by three lengths from the favourite King D’argent. Connections announced his retirement immediately after the race.

TODAY’S TIPS
SEBASTOPOL got off the mark over fences at Kempton a fortnight ago and Tom Lacey’s gelding appears capable of handling an 8lb rise from the handicapper in his attempt to back that performance up. Malystic unseated rider on his return to action at Doncaster, but he commands plenty of respect along with Return Ticket, who is of interest on his first outing since November, and Hatcher.

TODAY’S TIPS Sounds Russian has improved rapidly since making the switch to chasing, winning three of his four starts. He takes a rise in class today and must be feared, but he may have to play second fiddle to DUSART. Nicky Henderson’s charge was a smart hurdler, finishing third in a Grade 1 at Aintree last season, before making his return to action over the larger obstacles. The son of Flemensfirth was not disgraced when fifth in the Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival last month and, though he must carry top-weight, the gelding could still be improving. Doyen Breed is a consistent sort and should give his running once more, while the Irish challenge comes from Now Where Or When, who must be respected for his shrewd outfit. WIN: DUSART

TREE PLANTING
AYR RACECOURSE PARTICIPATES IN QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY INITIATIVE Ayr Racecourse is marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by participating in a nationwide project to plant trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. Several trees have been planted in and around the grounds of the course and Western House Hotel. The Queen’s Green Canopy was launched last May and its aim is to create a national legacy in honour of the Queen’s monarchy over 70 years. Ayr is one of many British racecourses to take part in the initiative and commemorative plaques have been placed beside the trees. Ayr Racecourse and Western House Hotel Managing Director David Brown said : “Both the racecourse and hotel were keen to mark this landmark occasion and the Queen’s Green Canopy gives us the perfect opportunity to do so. “This project promotes planting sustainably and also creates a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation.” Racecourse Head Gardener Simon McKay supervised the planting of the trees which included ornamental pear trees and cherry trees. Western House Hotel General Manager Zac Warr and t Stewart pictured with one of the trees at Western House and Simon McKay and the grounds team with one of the Racecourse trees.

CHAMPION HURDLE
FACTS FIRST RUN
The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.
FAMOUS HORSES Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bird’s Nest also won this race in 1979 and 1981.
BIG RACE JOCKEYS Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners, with the last named hoping to make it number four this afternoon.
WINNINGMOST TRAINER Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004).
FIRST COURSE WINNER Trainer Neil Mulholland won the race last year with Milkwood giving him his first ever winner at the track. The horse lines up again this afternoon hoping to make it a Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle double.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP Coral first sponsored this race in 2021 and we are delighted they noiw support the two principal races on today’s card .
THIRD RACE 2.25
THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE RACE (A LIMITED HANDICAP) (Grade 2) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight in the contest.
2021 WINNER MILKWOOD (IRE)
SP: 3/1F Age/Weight: 7-11-6 Runners: 9 Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies Trainer: Neil Mulholland Summary: Held up in last place, Sam Twiston-Davies brought Milkwood into the race three from home and they reached the last absolutely cruising to win by three and three-quarter lengths from Anna Bunina. This provided Neil Mulholland with his first ever Ayr winner.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): D McCain (14 wins from 56 runners, 25%) runs BARRICHELLO TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D McCain (12 wins from 36 runners, 33%) runs BARRICHELLO LONGEST TRAVELLER: ANNA BUNINA trained by J McConnell, Ireland. TODAY’S TIPS An intriguing contest and the progressive West Cork is an obvious candidate, having posted a career-best effort when finishing fourth in the County Hurdle on his latest start. Dan Skelton’s gelding should make his presence felt but it may be worth following MILKWOOD, who landed this race impressively last year before running a cracker when runner-up in the Galway Hurdle. Onemorefortheroad ran respectably when fourth in the Imperial Cup on his latest outing and, with the sharper test expected to suit, he can also have a say. WIN: MILKWOOD

FOURTH RACE 3.00
THE JORDAN ELECTRICS LTD FUTURE CHAMPION NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE (Grade 2) RACE DESCRIPTION
The next race is our second Grade 2 contest of the afternoon. Initially, each runner in this two miles, about four and a half furlongs steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards is allocated 11st (mares 10st 7lb). Penalties are then awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap chase to 5lb for success in a Class 1 weight-for-age contest.
2021 WINNER ALLMANKIND
SP: 11/10F Age/Weight: 5-11-5 Runners: 4 Jockey: Harry Skelton Trainer: Dan Skelton Summary: Sent off the 11-10 favourite, Allmankind took the race by the scruff of the neck and made all. Despite a few jumping errors, the result was never in doubt and he was 19 lengths to the second-placed runner-up Malystic.

TODAY’S TIPS DO
YOUR JOB had run well behind some top-class rivals prior to winning at Newcastle last time and he is arguably the one to beat at these weights. That said, Jacamar is an obvious threat having won well at Leicester a few weeks ago and he may have more to offer. Minella Drama has some decent form to his name but could be vulnerable giving weight to all of his rivals.

FEATURE EDITORIAL
FIRST RUN The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.
WELL DONE LUCINDA BOGSIDE The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.
Lucinda Russell achieved a lifetime ambition when winning the 2021 Coral Scottish Grand National with Mighty Thunder. Ridden by Tom Scudamore, Mighty Thunder overcame Dingo Dollar up the run-in meaning that Tom’s name joined his dad Peter’s on the Winners’ Board. Peter, who is Lucinda’s assistant and partner, won the race in 1987 on Little Polveir and in 1992 on Captain Dibble.
BRIAN CLOSING IN ON 200 WINNERS Champion jockey elect Brian Hughes is fast closing in on 200 winners which would be a fantastic achievement as only three other jockeys have ridden 200 winners in a sesaon – AP McCoy, Peter Scudamore and Riuchard Johnson. Can Brian close in on the magic number by riding Innisfree Lad to win today’s Coral Scottish Grand National?
www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk
SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL
FACTS MOST RIDES
Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.
LIMITED LUCK OF THE IRISH Only one Irish trained horse has won the race – Huntsman in 1869, trained and ridden by Larry Hyland.
WINNING DISTANCE
2018’s winning distance of a nose when Joe Farrell beat Ballyoptic into second place was the shortest ever winning distance in the race.
WINNING TRAINERS Paul Nicholls (Belmont King 1997, Vicente, 2016, 2017) and Nigel Twiston-Davies (Captain Dibble 1992, Earth Summit, 1994, Hello Bud 2009) have trained three winners each of the Scottish National since it moved to Ayr in 1966. If Nigel wins today with Fantastikas, he will equal Ken Oliver’s Ayr record of four wins in one race.
CORAL SPONSORSHIP Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

Since landing this contest in 2019, Takingrisks has been a real force over the longer trips and now has an official rating of 150. Being sent off at 16/1 in the Grand National, unfortunately, he was pulled up and will not be seen at Ayr today. In 2019,Takingrisks blundered at the very first fence but Sean Quinlan managed to keep the partnership intact and gradually worked his way through the field, hitting the front four out and despite not jumping the last all that well, he had plenty in hand to win by four lengths from Crosspark.
Joe Farrell is a horse whose racing career has been hampered by injury but he turned up in top condition last year to spring a 33-1 surprise for trainer Rebecca Curtis and jockey Adam Wedge. It was an enthralling race and at one point it looked as if Vicente was going to create history by becoming the first horse in more than 100 years to win three consecutive Scottish Grand Nationals. But it was not to be and when Joe Farrell went clear three out, it looked to be just a matter of how far, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Ballyoptic and jockey Tom Bellamy had other ideas and they battled all the way to the line with Adam Wedge’s mount holding on by just a nose.

Vicente, winner of the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2016, was bought by Trevor Hemmings to run in the Grand National at Aintree which was run just two weeks before its Scottish equivalent in 2017 but fell at the first and was rerouted to Ayr.
Trainer Paul Nicholls was involved in a titanic struggle with Willie Mullins for the British Trainers’ title and the Coral Scottish Grand National win with the seven-year-old Vicente virtually clinched the title for the Ditcheat stable.
Sent off 9/1 joint favourite, he travelled well through the race under a patient Sam TwistonDavies ride and stayed on well all the way up the run-in to touch off Cogry, trained by Sam’s father Nigel, by a neck.
Given a splendid ride from Sam Twiston-Davies, Vicente crept into the race on the final circuit and led from the last. He fought well all the way up the run-in to hold off Alvarado by two-and three-quarter lengths with Seeyouatmidnight back in third.
He become the first horse since Androma in 1984 and 1985 to win the race back to back

FIFTH RACE 3.35
THE CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Grade 3) RACE DESCRIPTION
Our feature race of the day is the Coral Scottish Grand National, a handicap steeple chase to be run over a distance of four miles. This Grade 3 has had its fair share of famous winners over the years including the likes of Red Rum and Earth Summit. The weights are allocated according to the official BHA rating of each horse with steeple chase winners after April 8th receiving a 5lb penalty.
2021 WINNER MIGHTY THUNDER (GB)
SP: 8/1 Age/Weight: 8-11-1 Runners: 22 Jockey: Tom Scudamore Trainer: Lucinda Russell Summary: Given a very patient ride by Tom Scudamore and travelling towards the rear of the field for much of the marathon trip, Mighty Thunder came into the contest turning into the home straight for the final time. He was second at the last and kept on gamely up the run-in to pass Dingo Dollar and win by three-quarters of a length.

TODAY’S TIPS An unlucky loser in last year’s Bet 365 Gold Cup when hampered on the run-in and a staying-on second at Kempton last time out, this could be the day that KITTY’S LIGHT deservedly lands a big pot. The son of Nathaniel has long shaped as though he will relish this sort of trip and he gets the vote ahead of stablemate Win My Wings, who was raised 8lb for an authoritative success in the Eider. Stormy Judge leads the Irish challenge, while last year’s fourth The Ferry Master and Edinburgh National second The Wolf must also enter calculations. Novices Fantastikas and Major Dundee are interesting on the step up in trip, whereas Cool Mix and Court Master are consistent individuals who could reward each-way support. WIN: KITTY’S LIGHT

SIXTH RACE 4.10
THE TENNENT’S HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles, about five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 155. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.
2021 WINNER BASS ROCK (FR)
SP: 17/2 Age/Weight: 5-10-1 Runners: 7 Jockey: Danny McMenamin Trainer: Sandy Thomson Summary: Bass Rock came into contention three from home joining Leostar and getting the better of the battle before the last to lead. He kept on well up the run-in to beat the Alistair Whillans horse by three and a quarter lengths.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): N Alexander (29 wins from 215 runners, 13%) runs ELVIS MAIL TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (6 wins from 45 runners, 13%) runs GETAWAY TRUMP LONGEST TRAVELLER: GETAWAY TRUMP trained by P Nicholls, Ditcheat, 403 miles.
TODAY’S TIPS Aurora Thunder has either won or finished runner-up in five of her past six visits to this track and she would have a definite chance if lining up (declared to run here on Friday), while Bass Rock is respected despite being 15lb higher than when winning this race 12 months ago. Hunters Call drops in class and can’t be ruled out, but ENEMY COAST AHEAD rates the one to beat. The eight-year-old tends to go well fresh, he was last seen staying on for fourth over an extended 2m4f at Newbury in December and this race has likely been in mind for him ever since. SEVENTH RACE 4.45
THE TRUMP TURNBERRY ‘HANDS & HEELS’ FINALE HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) (CONDITIONAL AND AMATEUR JOCKEYS RACE)(PART OF THE RACING EXCELLENCE INITIATIVE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This two miles, about four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
2021 WINNER FLOATING ROCK (GER)
SP: 4/1 Age/Weight: 6-11-8 Runners: 11 Jockey: Nathan Brennan Trainer: Mark Walford Summary: A terrific finish to this race with Floating Rock recovering from a mistake at the seventh to make headway four from home hunting down Glentruan. He came close to challenge at the last and kept on well to win by a neck.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): N Richards (36 wins from 176 runners, 20%) runs BETTER GETALONG TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D McCain (12 wins from 36 runners, 33%) runs COULD BE TROUBLE FANCY THAT: P Nicholls won this race in 2012 and 2014. The stable runs SKATMAN today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: PLATINUMCARD trained by G Elliott, Ireland.
TODAY’S TIPS Groom D’oudairies has stepped forward on his last couple of starts, since being moved into handicap company, and another solid display is expected. However, the vote goes to FLOATING ROCK, who has been running with credit on the all-weather recently and the seven-year-old could have more to offer in this sphere. Better Getalong and Could Be Trouble appeal most of the remainder. WIN: FLOATING ROCK

THE GOLF INN PRESTWICK OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 3) (CATEGORY 1 ELIMINATION) RACE DESCRIPTION
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.
2021 WINNER VINA ARDANZA (IRE)
SP: 15/2 Age/Weight: 4-10-9 Runners: 10 Jockey: Brian Hughes Trainer: S R B Crawford Summary: Viva Ardanza was given a brilliant hold-up ride from Brian Hughes and was going better than any from five furlongs out. He cruised into the lead over a furlong out and was pushed out to win by half a length from Masaccio.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): L Russell (27 wins from 229 runners, 12%) runs IDEM TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): Mr M T Walford (4 wins from 14 runners, 29%) runs MAGIC WAVE LONGEST TRAVELLER: LARGY SHARK trained by S R B Crawford, Ireland.
TODAY’S TIPS Call Me Harry and Jimmy’s Jet both merit plenty of respect but the penalties they carry have to be a concern. With that in mind, preference is for MAGIC WAVE, who displayed plenty of promise when finishing second on his debut at Doncaster last month and he should only benefit from that experience. Others to note are Idem and Largy Shark. WIN: MAGIC WAVE

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race. MEDIA COVERAGE & RECORDING FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse. Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse. Furthermore by entering the Racecourse each Attendee consents to the passing of still or moving images of them to third parties authorised by the Racecourse for the purposes of the production of printed or electronic material to be used solely for the Promotion of the Racecourse. Each Attendee will give any additional consents or waivers required for the unrestricted lawful use of any coverage (if any) without request for payment or imposing any other conditions.
MOBILE TELEPHONES & RADIOS The use of mobile telephones is not permitted except by permission of the Clerk of the Course. Bookmakers who have paid the appropriate fee may also use mobile telephones. In addition the use of any transmitting or receiving device, other than the official racecourse, Tote or Police service is prohibited. SMOKING Ayr Racecourse adheres to the government’s National No Smoking Policy. All indoor areas are No Smoking Zones. Those wishing to smoke may do so in the designated areas outside. USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflecton the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity in a calm environment, in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse! For equine care provided at Ayr see under officials at the back of this card.
