WELCOME
My warmest of welcomes to you all as we finally meet again, at our first Summer Jumps Saturday of 2022; it feels like it has been a long time in coming. I would like to thank, most sincerely, all of those racing participants who helped us overcome the challenges of 2020 and 2021. It is testament to their hard work and commitment that there remains a Cartmel to return to! Thank you all for your continued support of our beautiful racecourse – to greet back so many of you today is a real privilege. Our Owners deserve a special mention – without them, it should hardly need saying, there simply would be no racing. Ownership entails a real love of beautiful thoroughbreds and a fierce loyalty to the ancient sport of racing. It would be true to say that all Owners have their share of disappointment and make sacrifices in the cause of horse-racing. We have so many race sponsors to thank and acknowledge; what a wonderful thing to see so many of of them here today. Our partnerships are extremely important to us – they allow us to continue to invest in prize money, and I mention with our most sincere thanks, Hadwins, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Oakmere Homes and Molson Coors today; their enduring support is simply priceless to us. Of course, Banks Lyon will support our wonderful ladies race on July 16th with a lovely Cartier watch as a prize. Special mention to the family of Alan Bolt, for their personal memorial for Alan and, of course, today’s nominated Charity, Racing Welfare – our own Industry Charity who have an impressive history of standing by anyone and everyone in the racing industry who find themselves in need of help and support. From all of us at Cartmel, please enjoy your day with us.

LICKLIGHTER is better known as a chaser but he’s still capable of producing form good enough to win at this level over hurdles so it’s worth siding that this veteran will be fully fit on this reappearance. Ottoman Style won in Ireland last time and is a big threat under a penalty, with Perryville also of interest.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Charlotte Jones What a season it was for Barrow-born conditional jockey Charlotte Jones at Cartmel last season as she came of age with a series of brilliant rides to take the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge for the first time in her short career. In doing so, she became the first female jockey to lift the prize as well as the first conditional, while her season’s tally of 11 winners equalled the Cartmel course record set by champion jockey Brian Hughes in 2018.
JOCKEY CHARLOTTE JONES BRIAN HUGHES SEAN QUINLAN CONOR O'FARRELL HENRY BROOKE JONATHAN ENGLAND DEREK FOX SEAN BOWEN DANNY MCMENAMIN JAMES BOWEN ADAM WEDGE JONATHAN BEWLEY AARON ANDERSON CALLUM BEWLEY
With 38 points over the season, Charlotte, who is attached to James Moffatt’s stable at Cartmel, was a very comfortable winner of the Challenge, chased home by the perennial winner Brian Hughes, who was 12 points behind on 26. Sean Quinlan, whose continued progress will make a big threat in this season’s competition, finished third on 24 points with another outstanding rider Conor O’Farrell having another solid season to take fourth place on 21 points. Although he misses today’s opening meeting to ride at his local course at Ffos Las, Sean Bowen is always a jockey to be reckoned with at Cartmel and after his flying start to the jumping season is likely to improve on last season’s effort when he was eighth on 12 points. The final table in 2021 was:-.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE The tally included another course record of 12 winners in the season, eclipsing the previous best of nine held by Donald McCain from his Challenge-winning season in 2018. Moffatt and McCain are the only names on the trophy since the Challenge was introduced in 2010, although Dianne Sayer, who was runner-up again last season with a highly respectable 28 points, is always there or thereabouts and can be expected to challenge once more. Sam England had her best ever season at Cartmel and finished third on 19 points, pushing a below-par Donald McCain back into a fourth place with 18 points. As in the Jockeys Challenge, points are awarded on the basis of three for a winner, two for a second place and one for third. The final table in 2021 was: as above:-.
James Moffatt A new season and a new challenge for all trainers with runners at Cartmel this year for a chance to win the Andrea Robinson Memorial Trophy and a luxury weekend for two in the fabulous Lake District. But whoever wins will have to go some to better the efforts of local trainer James Moffatt, who pulled off an astonishing triumph in last year’s Trainers’ Challenge when he swept aside the opposition to post a competition record 42 points. 3

PLAY SMARTER
BALLYCORR justified support when beating a couple of subsequent winners under this rider at Sedgefield earlier this month, so is taken to defy an 11lb rise. Loughermore, Well Cliche and Tanora all remain unexposed over fences so they head the dangers.

Racegoers should be aware that the Cartmel Veterinary Team will arrange for the erection of screens on any occasion where they believe it to be in the interest of a horses’ welfare. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. 29
