WELCOME Welcome to Wonderful Wednesday and thank you for supporting the racecourse today. On the eve of the Platinum Jubilee, visitors to Cartmel will be among the first to celebrate, with profound respect and gratitude, Her Majesty the Queen’s tireless service to us all over so many years. This year I would like to highlight especially the Owners who have horses entered with us today – without the Owners there just would not be any racing and we are very appreciative of their support here at Cartmel. Ownership entails not only a real love of horses and an enduring commitment to the ancient sport of racing in good times and bad, it also carries with it responsibilities. Thank you to all of our sponsors – it is particularly good to welcome the Kings Arms; we were delighted when the business opened again last year; the Square was just not the same without them. Their race today is actually in memory of their Father Nicholas Hooton who died in January of this year. Also, our grateful thanks to Campbell & Rowley, Louis Roederer and Lakes Luxury Loos. Our partnerships are extremely important to us – they allow us to continue to invest in prize money, and I mention with our most sincere thanks, Hadwins, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Oakmere Homes and Molson Coors today; their enduring support is simply priceless to us. We are delighted that Banks Lyon will support our prize ladies race on July 16th with a beautiful Cartier watch as a prize. We are so happy to be working with St Mary’s Hospice today and helping them to raise much-needed funds. I am sure many of you will be familiar with their compassionate end-oflife work; so important to the community in which they operate. I am, as ever, profoundly grateful to the home-team who have worked so hard to keep the racecourse in good condition, both over the year just past, and intensively since our racing season opened last week. Have a truly wonderful day with us. We hope to welcome you again as the summer season unfolds.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Charlotte Jones Sean Quinlan, who is now firmly established as one of the very best jockeys in the North, made the biggest move of the day at Cartmel on Monday to move into second place in this season’s Jockeys Challenge. After collecting two points when Rose Of Sienna chased home Prime Time Lady in the opener, Quinlan was swiftly on to five points for the day with an impressive display of front-running with On We Go in the second division of the Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle.
JOCKEY CHARLOTTE JONES SEAN QUINLAN KEVIN BROGAN RICHIE MCLERNON ADAM WEDGE BRIAN HUGHES JONJO O'NEILL JNR JONATHAN BEWLEY CONOR O'FARRELL MR HENRY CROW ALEX EDWARDS JONATHAN ENGLAND TOM SCUDAMORE THOMAS WILLMOTT
Punters who noted that Quinlan had opted to ride On We Go rather than topweight Benito, trained by his mother-in-law Barbara Butterworth, were well rewarded as the partnership made every yard. Benito did win the best turned out prize for Quinlan’s wife Lizzie!! Those five points briefly had Quinlan just a point off the top of the table, but the gap opened to three after the last race when Charlotte Jones took second with Tokyo Getaway, her only ride of the day, to move on to 11 points. Kevin Brogan started the day second on six points, but had no rides at Cartmel and finished day two in joint third place alongside Adam Wedge, who had two winners from just two rides and Richie McLernon, who also made strides towards the top with a winner and a second.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE Following on from a second place on Saturday, Laura now has eight points to be clear second as she completed a May Monday double at Cartmel for the second year in succession. The big question now is whether she can build on this. Gary Hanmer was joined in third place on six points by Ben Haslam. The Middleham trainer may have been in Monaco for the Grand Prix, but his horses are clearly in top form and he picked up five points with his three runners, led by Jerrysback, who lived up to his name with a 14-1 success in the Cartmel Racecourse Veterans Handicap Chase. They are just a point clear of fifth placed Simon Waugh, whose two runners at Cartmel over the first two days of the season have yielded a winner and a second.
James Moffatt Cartmel trainer James Moffatt had just one runner at the second stage of the May meeting, but second place for Tokyo Getaway in the closing Women’s Community Matters Mares Handicap Hurdle was enough to keep him on top of the Trainers’ Challenge table. With second placed Gary Hanmer unable to add to his score, Moffatt might even have stretched his three points lead, but Laura Morgan had other ideas and with two winners in Clear The Runway and Fire Away, she kept the leader in her sights. 3

Race Description This is a two-miles and one-furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. As this is a seller there will be an auction for the winning horse in the winners enclosure after the race. eading course trainer (17-22): J Moffatt (28 wins from 199 runners, 14%) runs THE STEWARD Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): G Hanmer (4 wins from 10 runners, 40%) runs DEE LANE Longest Traveller: APPLESANDPIERRES trained by S Leech, Westbury-on-Severn, 212 miles.

Race Description This is a two miles one furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105. Leading course trainer (17-22): P Bowen (19 wins from 89 runners, 21%) runs LERMOOS LEGEND Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): W Coltherd (1 win from 4 runners, 25%) runs BUDARRI Weightwatcher: ARDERA CROSS won off a handicap mark of 114, his rating is now down 19lb to 95. FRIGHTENED RABBIT returned to form with a bang at Hexham 2 weeks ago and is taken to follow up having won this event in good style 12 months ago off a similar mark. Vocal Duke did well last season and has joined an in-form yard, so is feared most ahead of Glajou, who’s potentially on a good mark back in this sphere.
