DAY THREE
THURSDAY 17 MARCH 2022 Official programme - £5.00
Allaho, winner of the 2021 Ryanair Chase
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to the penultimate day of The Festival™. We are already halfway through four extraordinary days of sport, and are looking forward to the next two days of action. We would also like to wish our Irish friends a very Happy St Patrick’s Day. The feature race of the day, the Ryanair Chase, always produces a fantastic spectacle, with 2021 winner Allaho looking for back to back victories. This is followed by the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle, a very open competition in 2022 the quality action comes thick and fast on the third day of The Festival™. As ever, our thanks go to our raceday sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today’s sponsors include; Paddy Power, Ryanair, Turners, Pertemps Network, Parnell Properties and the JRL Group. We are very proud to once again be supporting Well Child as our charity partner for The Festival™. Well Child is the national charity for seriously ill children and is headquartered in Cheltenham. There will be a bucket collection on exit from the racecourse today, and any donation you are able to make will be a huge help to this wonderful charity. We thank you in advance. While we hope everyone has a fantastic day with us, we all acknowledge that the current news surrounding the world is at the forefront of all our minds. The Jockey Club are supporting the charitable efforts of The British Red Cross which is fundraising to support people impacted and displaced by the invasion with necessities including food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter. We thank you all for any support you can offer the appeal, we know the racing community is incredibly strong when we come together and we hope we can help to raise funds for this very important cause. In between enjoying today’s top-class racing, racegoers are encouraged to explore The Orchard™, where a range of luxury brands are situated, including Boodles, Bentley, Ana De Costa and Glenfarclas. The Orchard™ is available to Club Enclosure ticket holders, including Hospitality guests, Owners and Trainers, and all Cheltenham Annual Members. Finally, We would like to wish all racegoers an enjoyable day with us and look forward to seeing you for our final day featuring the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. MARTIN ST QUINTON

FACTS & STATS THE TURNERS NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE (Registered as The Golden Miller) RACE DESCRIPTION
The Turners Novices’ Chase, first run in 2011, is a two and a half mile Grade 1 contest for novices. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to senior ranks. Grade 1 contests are the highest level of National Hunt racing so some classy horses are lining up. In terms of weight, the majority carry 11st 4lb but Busselton carries 11st 2lb.

CHANTRY HOUSE Envoi Allen was a big talking horse all season after his Ballymore romp the previous year. Things didn’t get off to a great start for his supporters when he came tumbling down at the fourth fence. Thankfully he got up okay, but it left the way clear for Chantry House to take the spoils for a Nicky Henderson 1-2. There were three lengths back to stablemate Fusil Raffles but it was the JP gelding who showed the superior gears.

Only four runners, and essentially a match between GALOPIN DES CHAMPS and Bob Olinger but it should still be a race to savour between two top-class chasing prospects. Henry de Bromhead’s imperious Ballymore winner has the better hurdling form but Willie Mullins’ Martin Pipe scorer has looked something special since sent over fences and his fine jumping is likely to prove the deciding factor.

THE JOCKEY CLUB RACECOURSES
SOUTH WEST REGION FREQUENT RUNNER SCHEME
The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton. There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training. Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022. All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three. At the end of the South West Jumps Season, the over 40winner will receive an Equi-trek horsebox for 12 months. CURRENT STANDINGS (as of 11 March 2022) 40+ horses

FACTS & STATS THE PERTEMPS NETWORK FINAL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION
This Pertemps Network Final is a Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle run over three miles and is restricted to horses that finished in the first six in one of the many Pertemps Qualifiers run throughout the season. Each horse’s weight is determined by their official BHA rating, meaning the higher the rating, the bigger the weight the horse has to carry - see how Sire du Berlais, rated 156, carries 6lb more than the 150-rated Ballyandy.

WINNER
RUN OVER TWO MILES, SEVEN FURLONGS & 213 YARDS
MRS MILNER After defending his title last year, Sire Du Berlais opted to head to the Stayers Hurdle last year, which left the door open for a new name on the roll of honour. Paul Nolan’s Mrs Milner once again took the trophy back to Ireland in emphatic style. As with most Pertemps Hurdles, there were multiple in with chances as they came thundering down to the last, but it was Mrs Milner who showed the gears to win by five lengths.

Gordon Elliott has a fine record here and his DUNBOYNE looks primed to make it a fourth win in the past five seasons. This low-mileage son of Yeats has enjoyed no luck in running on his last two starts in Leopardstown handicaps and arrives on a very workable mark. Winter Fog shaped really well on his debut for Emmet Mullins and is feared most, with Alaphilippe and Folcano high on the shortlist.

FACTS & STATS THE RYANAIR STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Ryanair Steeple Chase is a race for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated in excess of 130 and is run over the intermediate trip of two miles, four and a half furlongs. It therefore suits horses that perhaps find the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on the sharp side and those that find the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup trip a step too far at this stage in their careers. Always a competitive race at The Festival™ – Allaho will be looking to retain his crown.

ALLAHO
Allaho fairly blew away what looked to be a top field in last year’s race. Rachael Blackmore made use of Allaho’s relentless gallop, and the likes of 2020 winner Min just couldn’t live with it. He clearly benefitted from the first-time tongue tie and came home the eased down 12-length winner. Fakir D’Oudaries ran a good race back in second place but he and Tornado Flyer were only battling out the minor places. This year he returns as red-hot favourite.

HISTORY The Ryanair Steeple Chase, or the Festival Trophy Steeple Chase to give it its registered name, was introduced in 2005 when a fourth day was added to The Festival™. Some think that it is the reincarnation of the Cathcart Challenge Cup but that isn’t strictly true as that race was restricted to first and second-season chasers. Run over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs, the race was initially granted Grade 2 status and was sponsored by the Daily Telegraph. Thisthatandtother had proven his liking for Cheltenham by finishing runner-up in that season’s BetVictor Gold Cup, December Gold Cup and re-scheduled Victor Chandler Chase. Memories of his fall when sent off favourite for the previous season’s Arkle were soon forgotten as the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding won out in a gripping battle with Fondmort in the hands of Ruby Walsh. Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the first trainer and jockey to win the Ryanair twice when Taranis, the youngest winner of the race, beat the unfortunate Our Vic in a gripping dive for the line. A neck was the official verdict – the shortest winning distance in the race’s history. The David Pipe-trained Our Vic had been pulled-up in the inaugural race and finished 9th behind Fondmort before his narrow defeat in 2007 but twelve months later, the year the race achieved Grade 1 status, he gained compensation with a five length victory in the hands of Timmy Murphy. In 2009 Imperial Commander gave us all a glimpse of what was to come when staying on gamely in the hands of Paddy Brennan to beat the 2006 Arkle and 2007 Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes. Twelve months later, the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Imperial Commander returned to Cheltenham to land the Gold Cup; beating Denman by seven lengths. Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run proved the biggest priced winner of the Ryanair when dispelling his starting price of 14-1 to win under A. P. McCoy in 2010. He was sent off at 6-1 for the following season’s renewal but the result was the same. Under a typical McCoy drive Albertas Run became the first horse to win the race twice. In fact, he went very close to a hat-trick of victories but at the age of eleven he was unable to handle the finishing kick of his younger rival Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson-trained winner was a well supported 7-2 favourite and he became the first outright winning favourite of the race, thanks in part to jockey Barry Geraghty. The 2013 renewal saw the widest margin winner of the Ryanair when Cue Card routed his rivals by nine lengths. After running well in defeat in the 2011 Supreme and 2012 Arkle, the 2010 Champion Bumper winner got back to winning ways for father and son team Colin and Joe Tizzard. Dynaste gave his trainer David Pipe a second victory in the race in 2014 with a two-and-aquarter-length success, some six years after Our Vic landed the spoils for the Pond House team. Uxizandre gave jockey AP McCoy the perfect Festival™ send off as he produced a fine front-running display to win the race four years ago. Willie Mullins landed back-to-back Ryanair Chases in 2016 and 2017 courtesy of Vautour (pictured) and Un De Sceaux. However, the master of Closutton was denied a hat-trick twelve months later as Henry De Bromhead’s Balko des Flos beat Un de Sceaux by four and a half lengths, but it wasn’t long for Mullins to wait to regain the crown as Min put in an exhibition of jumping to win the 2020 renewal of the race - Mullins’ third Ryanair win in the last five years. The 2019 renewal saw a brave performance from Paul Nicholls’ Frodon, who battled back bravely up the hill under Bryony Frost to defeat Aso, third in 2018, by just over a length to begin what came to be known as ‘The Golden Hour’. The pair returned to jubilant scenes in the winners’ enclosure with a first Grade 1 triumph for the horse a very popular one. Last year saw the emergence of a new superstar, Allaho. Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old proved to be one of the more popular bets of the week after a significant market support just before the off. An emphatic winner, he looks to be one of the bankers of the week.

FACTS & STATS THE PADDY POWER STAYERS’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION The ultimate stamina test for hurdlers, the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle Race is run over three miles. Recent famous winners on the illustrious Roll of Honour include Baracouda, Inglis Drever, multiple winner Big Buck’s and more recently Thistlecrack, Nichols Canyon, Penhill and Paisley Park. FLOORING PORTER Gavin Cromwell knows how to ready one for Cheltenham and Flooring Porter was primed for last year’s Stayers’ Hurdle. He didn’t have the usual profile for a Stayers’ winner and had rapidly gone through the handicap ranks. As he’s a bit of a quirky sort, Danny Mullins made sure they jumped out in front and once he was there, nothing was stopping him. He answered any question marks around his ability and is another back to defend his crown.

HISTORY The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long-distance hurdle race in the calendar. It was introduced to The Festival™ in 1972 when it replaced the Spa Hurdle and was initially known as the Lloyds Bank Stayers’ Hurdle. Originally held on Tuesday or Wednesday until it was switched to the Thursday in 1993, the inaugural race was won by Parlour Moor, trained by Harry Thomson Jones and ridden by Macer Gifford. Tommy Carberry steered Brown Lad to victory in 1975 for trainer Jim Dreaper before becoming the first jockey to win the race twice when partnering the Peter Easterby-trained Town Ship to victory in 1977. In 1982 Crimson Embers gave Fulke Walwyn his first of three Stayers’ Hurdle successes when partnered by Stuart Shilston and the trio combined again four years later when Crimson Embers became the first horse to regain the title and at eleven, the oldest winner of the race. Galmoy became the first horse to win back-to-back renewals in 1987 and 1988 for trainer John Mulhern and jockey Tommy Carmody. The Barry Hills-trained Nomadic Way was equally at home racing on the level or over hurdles and in 1992 won the Stayers’ Hurdle with those famous Sangster colours carried by Jamie Osborne. Martin Pipe recorded the first of two Stayers’ Hurdle successes in 1994 when Balasani held off all challengers under Mark Perrett and two years later Cyborgo followed suit when ridden by David Bridgwater. Multiple winners were aplenty in the 2000s. The French raider Baracouda set the trend when winning in the famous silks of J. P. McManus in 2002 and 2003 for Francois and Thierry Doumen. 2005 proved a landmark year for more than one reason. The title of the race was changed to the World Hurdle when Ladbrokes took over the sponsorship and it also saw the emergence of one of the best-known names associated with the race. The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever dominated the race during the mid-part of the decade winning three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Graham Lee did the steering for his first success whilst Paddy Brennan took over for his second success and Denis O’Regan for the third, meaning that Inglis Drever is the only multiple winner in the race’s history to be ridden by three different jockeys. Prior to 2009 Paul Nicholls had been out of luck in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Big Buck’s (pictured) hadn’t looked anything out of the ordinary in his native France, winning twice from 13 starts, but in the hands of Nicholls he blossomed into the best hurdler of his generation and arguably the best we have ever seen. The 2009 Festival™ provided the springboard to a career that saw him win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles from 2009 to 2012 under the tutorage of Ruby Walsh. In fact, from January 2009 to December 2012 the stylish hurdler went a total of 18 races unbeaten. In four short years, Big Buck’s, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the most successful horse, trainer and jockey in the race’s history. Injury prevented the superstar defending his title in 2013 when the Charles Byrnes-trained Solwhit took full advantage under Paul Carberry – 36 years after his father had won with Town Ship. With Sun Bets taking over the sponsorship in 2017 and changing the race title back to the Stayers’ Hurdle, the final World Hurdle saw Colin Tizzard’s brilliant hurdler Thistlecrack land the spoils, stretching clear up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by seven lengths at the line. The inaugural Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle saw trainer Willie Mullins gain a first success in the 3m prize with Nichols Canyon and Mullins was back in the Winner’s Enclosure twelve months later with Penhill. Paisley Park’s dominance of the stayers’ hurdling arena began in 2019 and he duly landed the Grade 1 prize here at The Festival™. The trio of Paisley Park, Lisnagar Oscar and the 2021 winner Flooring Porter are all back to try and win the race again. Previous winners have a great record in the race and if Paisley Park is able to get his head in front the roof may come off.

LUXURY, BOTTLED The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. has reimagined Irish whiskey, rejecting age statements in favour of a tailored approach. It honours the whiskey-making art perfected by Irish distillers over the centuries, but adds today’s science to elevate that craft. Regular tasting catches the whiskey at the moment of perfection, with its journey having a greater impact on the whiskey’s character than its age. This obsessive dedication to perfection has seen the company’s inaugural rare release, The Devil’s Keep, awarded Best Single Malt in Ireland at the World Whiskies Awards under the No Age Statement category, alongside The Taoscán and The Brollach which took Silver and Bronze. To learn more about The Craft Irish Whiskey Co.’s innovative techniques, speak to a Craft Specialist on +44 (0)20 8077 3632.

INTRODUCING THE TAOSCÁN
Born from experimentation and a willingness to question convention, The Taoscán is the world’s first Port and Chestnut Single Malt whiskey; a unique blend of barrels brought together in perfect harmony. The rare Collector’s Edition is an exclusive limited release of just 1,000; an exquisitely crafted whiskey, presented in a skilfully designed display stand and box to elevate the whiskey collection of the premier connoisseur. A rare release from The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. is so much more than a whiskey. It embodies the spirit of Ireland’s history, and the glory of its future. The Taoscán is a whiskey to raise the standing of the country’s liquid gold, restoring it to its rightful place as a global leader. Speak to a Craft Specialist on +44 (0)20 8077 3632 to secure your Collector’s Edition of The Taoscán.

FACTS & STATS THE CRAFT WHISKEY CO. PLATE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION The Craft Whiskey Co. Plate is a Grade 3 Handicap Steeple chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs. Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing for connections and punters alike. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. Put simply, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight carried - see how 155 rated Hardline carries 3lb more than the 152-rated Pistol Whipped. LAST YEAR’S
WINNER THE SHUNTER
The Shunter was campaigned brilliantly by connections and trainer Emmet Mullins last season. He won the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso before going back over fences to win this race. In doing so, he picked up the £100k bonus and gave punters another winner in a race that is often won by the favourite. Jordan Gainford made use of his 7lb claim all Festival™ and proved just how valuable that claim can be with another great ride.

PLAY SMARTER
Cases can be made for several but CELEBRE D’ALLEN had plenty up his sleeve when completing the hat-trick on his first chase start in Britain at Warwick last month, having to pick his way through rivals. He’s no ordinary 10-y-o and, ticking plenty of boxes, he can make it 4 on the spin. Grand Paradis, The Glancing Queen and Imperial Alcazar are just a handful of other contenders.

FACTS & STATS THE RYANAIR MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This race has also been allocated Grade 2 status which makes it a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch contenders lining up. Initially all runners are allocated 11st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here - see how Statuaire carries 5lb extra for her Grade One success in the Royal Bond back in November.
GRADE 2
LAST YEAR’S
WINNER
TELMESOMETHINGGIRL Willie Mullins dominance over the Mares’ Novice Hurdle finally came to an end at last year’s Festival™. After dominating the race since its inception in 2016, Henry de Bromhead added his name to the roll of honour with the hugely promising Telmesomethinggirl. The keen going Magic Daze took them along at a good pace and eventually battled on well to finish second. It would have been a fine performance had Telmesomethinggirl not flown up the hill to win impressively.

DAWN RUN This race is registered as the Dawn Run, in honour of the legendary mare, who is arguably the most succesful mare in the history of the sport. Paddy Mullins’ mare became only the second mare to win the Champion Hurdle at The Festival™ in 1984 and remains the only horse to have ever won the English, Irish and French Champion Hurdles in the same season. Two years later, she won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in what remains one of the most famous finishes in the race’s history. She remains the only horse to complete the Champion Hurdle - Gold Cup double and will long be remembered as one of the greats of National Hunt Racing.

PLAY SMARTER
Willie Mullins has won five of the six previous renewals and holds a very strong hand again. DINOBLUE looked a smart mare in the making when hammering 12 rivals under hand riding at Clonmel, and with significant improvement likely, she’s hard to ignore. Stablemate Brandy Love will be more at home on this left-handed track and is feared most, with Love Envoi perhaps the pick of the British runners.

FACTS & STATS FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (SPONSORED BY THE JRL GROUP) RACE DESCRIPTION The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Steeple Chase (Sponsored by the JRL Group) is another handicap, this time for horses which possess an official rating from 0 to 145 and will be run over three miles and two furlongs. Like the rest of the handicaps on today’s card, the higher a horse’s official BHA rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry - see how the 145-rated Frontal Assault, carries 1lb more than Ain’t That A Shame, who is rated 144. LAST YEAR’S
HANDICAP CHASE
WINNER MOUNT IDA
RUN OVER THREE MILES, TWO FURLONGS
Mount Ida looked to have thrown away any chance of winning after the first couple of fences, but Jack Kennedy knew the standard of horse he had underneath him and managed to nurse her back into the race. With no amateur jockeys riding, the race had a different feel about it but it was still a great race to watch. Mount Ida ran out an extremely comfortable winner in the end, despite the fact she jumped righthanded almost the whole way round.

PLAY SMARTER
The Elliott stable has a good record in this and FRONTAL ASSAULT has very much the right profile having got his mark from 3 runs over shorter trips whilst leaving the impression this sort of stamina test will very much play to his strengths. Fellow handicap newcomer Ain’t That A Shame is feared most. School Boy Hours and Smoking Gun complete the shortlist in what could be an Irish domination.

Health and Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Cheltenham Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegeors that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar
Notices
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
In-Running Betting
Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Cheltenham Racecourse. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the racecourse. For the full terms and conditions of entry, please visit the racecourse website.
Touts
JCR is taking strong action against touts. Touting is seen by some as a legitimate way of buying or selling last minute tickets but many tickets sold by touts are fraudulent or counterfeit. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout. Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website.
Terms and Conditions
All you do at the Racecourse including transactions as well as entry onto the Racecourse are subject to the Terms and Conditions. For details see the Racecourse Website www.cheltenham.co.uk. A copy is also available at the Racecourse Office.
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
