THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to the final day of The Festival™, we have had three fantastic days of sport and are looking forward to seeing what Gold Cup Day has in store. The feature race of the day is the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup that will take place at 3:30pm, and it looks set to be a fantastic renewal, with 2021 winner Minella Indo looking to retain his crown. We would like to wish all connections the very best of luck. As ever, our thanks go to our raceday sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today’s sponsors include Boodles, JCB, McCoy Contractors, St James’s Place, and Paddy Power. We are very proud to once again be supporting WellChild as our charity partner for The Festival™. WellChild is the national charity for seriously ill children and headquartered in Cheltenham. Any donation you are able to make to this wonderful charity will be a huge help. We thank you in advance. While we hope everyone has a fantastic day with us, we all acknowledge that the current news surrounding Ukraine is at the forefront of all our minds. The Jockey Club are supporting the charitable efforts of The British Red Cross in their Ukraine Appeal which is fundraising to support people impacted and displaced by the invasion with necessities including food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter. We thank you all for any support you can offer the appeal, we know the racing community is incredibly strong when we come together and we hope we can help to raise funds for this very important cause. In between enjoying today’s top-class racing, racegoers are encouraged to explore The Orchard™, where a range of luxury brands are situated, including Boodles, Bentley, Ana De Costa and Glenfarclas. The Orchard™ is available to Club Enclosure ticket holders, including Hospitality guests, Owners and Trainers, and all Cheltenham Annual Members. Finally, we would like to wish racegoers a fantastic final day of The Festival™. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you back in 2023 for four more extraordinary days of sport. To ensure you are here to enjoy all the action, head to our website to sign up to be notified when tickets and hospitality will go on sale. MARTIN ST QUINTON

FACTS & STATS THE JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION

The JCB Triumph Hurdle is the Championship race for juveniles (four-year-olds) and is historically one of the most open races at The Festival™. Thanks to the introduction of the Fred Winter, it usually means the field is much smaller and more competitve. As is usual in a Grade 1 Championship race, all horses carry the same weight - 11st.

LAST YEAR’S

GRADE 1

WINNER

RUN OVER TWO MILES, 179 YARDS

QUILIXIOS Rachael Blackmore started the day as she intended to go on with a win in the opener. The Triumph Hurdle can be a tricky race to solve and last year was no different with favourite Zanahiyr disappointing. The Blackmore-ridden Quilixios stalked the leader and took it up with a good jump at the second last, with the long straight playing to his strengths as he kept up a good gallop to see off the challenges of Adagio and Haut En Couleurs.

HISTORY The JCB Triumph Hurdle certainly has a rich and interesting history. The race was introduced to the Racing Calendar in 1939, and was originally held at Hurst Park in Surrey. That race was won by Grey Talk, who was trained by George Batchelor and ridden by Serge Rochet. Although no race took place from 1940-1949 due to the war, in the following years it was regularly contested by horses trained in France with six of the first seven winners French-based. As the leading event in the National Hunt calendar exclusively contested by juveniles, you would have thought that the two-mile and one-furlong (3,420 metres) contest would be a good source for Champion Hurdle winners, but Clair Soleil was the first of just four to achieve the feat when winning the 1953 Triumph Hurdle before bagging Champion Hurdle glory in 1955, both times under Fred Winter. Prince Charlemagne proved a notable Triumph winner in 1954 as the Tommy Carey-trained gelding provided a certain Lester Piggott with one of his twenty hurdle race victories. Fred Winter was back in the winners’ enclosure in 1961 when partnering the Ryan Price-trained Cantab to victory and 12 months on, the legendary trainer saddled Beaver II, his second winner of the race, ridden this time by Josh Gifford. When Hurst Park closed its doors, the Triumph Hurdle was transferred to Cheltenham for the 1965 renewal, although at that point it took place at the April meeting until it became part of The Festival™ in 1968. It was at this stage that the race attracted its first sponsor – the Daily Express, whose name was associated with the race from 1965-1996. Arguably, the most impressive Triumph Hurdle winner came in the shape of the Brian Swift-trained Persian War who won the race in 1967 under Jimmy Uttley, before winning a hat-trick of Champion Hurdle titles in 1968, 1969 and 1970. In fact, until 2015, Uttley was the joint most successful jockey in the history of the race having also won on England’s Glory in 1968 and Boxer in 1971. In 1985 a certain Nicky Henderson recorded his first Triumph Hurdle winner when Steve Smith Eccles partnered First Bout to victory. The race has proved kind to Henderson, who has won the race a further six times courtesy of Alone Success (1987), Katarino (1999), Zaynar (2009), Soldatino (2010), Peace And Co (2015) and Pentland Hills (2019), making him the leading trainer in the race’s history. Although better known for winning Classics, Sir Michael Stoute got in on the act when the Sheikh Mohammed-owed Kribensis took the spoils in 1988 before becoming the third horse to go on to Champion Hurdle glory in 1990. The Elite Racing Club took over the sponsorship of the race in 1997 and saw the Ted Walsh-trained Commanche Court gallop to victory under Norman Williamson. The Irish have a remarkable record at The Festival™ but since then they have only won six Triumph Hurdles – Scolardy in 2002, when current sponsor JCB took up the reins, and more recently Our Conor, Tiger Roll, Ivanovich Gorbatov, Farclas, Burning Victory and last year’s winner Quilixios. Ivanovich Gorbatov’s success earned Barry Geraghty the honour of being the most successful jockey in the race’s history. His tally of five is unmatched, having also won aboard Spectroscope, Zaynar, Soldatino and Peace And Co. In 2007, the tiny Alan King-trained Katchit (pictured) became only the fourth horse to win the Triumph Hurdle before following up in the following season’s Champion Hurdle. Twelve months later Paul Nicholls won the first of two Triumph Hurdles thanks to Celestial Halo, Zarkandar adding the second in 2011. Whatever the outcome of today’s race, it looks sure to be another thrilling affair, much like the 2020 renewal where Goshen unseated at the last in terribly unlucky fashion when ten lengths clear. Burning victory captalised to give Mullins his first win since 2002 but last year it was the turn of Quilixious to steam up the hill in a much less dramatic fashion.

PLAY SMARTER

VAUBAN won the Spring Juvenile in impressive fashion on just his second start over hurdles, and that looks the best piece of form in the division on either side of the Irish Sea, so he’s fancied to prove too strong with further improvement on the cards. The Elliott-trained pair Pied Piper and Fil Dor are fancied to follow him home in that order, while Doctor Parnassus makes appeal at bigger odds.

FACTS & STATS THE McCOY CONTRACTORS COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION The McCoy Contractors County Hurdle, a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle for five-year-olds and upwards, is one of the most fiercely contested races of the entire Festival™. The aim of a handicap is to ensure a level playing field for all and this is achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achieved on the racecourse so far - see how the 152-rated Call Me Lyreen carries 6lb more than the 146-rated My Mate Mozzie.

GRADE 3 HANDICAP

LAST YEAR’S

WINNER

BELFAST BANTER Favourites had a notoriously bad record in this race until Saint Roi came along in 2020 but last year normality resumed as 33/1 shot Belfast Banter came out of the pack to beat the veteran Petit Mouchoir. The Peter Fahey-trained six-year-old was exposed over the trip but had only had one handicap start in his career up until that point, with a mark of 129 clearly underestimating him. In a highly competitive field, he stayed on gamely all the way to the post to land another Irish success.

PLAY SMARTER

Unsurprisingly, claims can be made for a host, including Nigel Twiston Davies’ I LIKE TO MOVE IT. Already a 3-time winner over hurdles, he improved again and shaped really well when second in the Befair Hurdle latest, going down by a short head. This stiffer test will suit and he earns the vote. Irish raiders Top Bandit and State Man are next best, ahead of West Cork and Surprise Package.

FACTS & STATS THE ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle is run over the stamina-sapping trip of three miles and this contest attracts the top staying hurdlers of the future. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. In this Grade 1 race, all runners will carry 11st 8lb.

GRADE 1

LAST YEAR’S

WINNER

RUN OVER TWO MILES, SEVEN FURLONGS & 213 YARDS

VANILLIER We weren’t done with surprises as Vanillier took the Albert Bartlett under a great ride by Mark Walsh. The striking grey was going much the best of those in the front rank turning for home and quickly put double digit lengths between him and the field. It was by far a career best effort and it could be that he’s a spring horse that loves Cheltenham, with him finishing third in this year’s Ukraine Appeal National Hunt Chase.

GINTO made light of the further step up in grade when completing the hat-trick in a Grade 1 at Naas in January, maintaining his unbeaten record over hurdles in the process. There’s a good chance that this longer trip will bring out further improvement, so he makes plenty of appeal. Hillcrest and Minella Cocooner are both highly progressive so rate the main threats.

FACTS & STATS THE BOODLES CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP RACE DESCRIPTION

The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most prestigious steeplechase found anywhere in the world. The cream of British and Irish staying chasers will be lining up for what is known as the Blue Riband of steeple chasing, and the small matter of a £625,000 first prize. Many of the past winners of this race such as Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman to name just three have become legendary names in the world of National Hunt racing. Once again, as is usual in Championship races, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 10lb.

MINELLA INDO

Al Boum Photo couldn’t make it three wins on the bounce in last year’s race, but did run a cracker to finish third. The three pulled a long way clear of the rest but it was between Allaho and Minella Indo that the real battle took place. The two had gone toe-to-toe in last year’s RSA before getting collared late by Champ but he was pulled up earlier on in the race. Minella Indo just seemed to keep finding more to win by just over a length under a jubilant Jack Kennedy.

HISTORY The WellChild Cheltenham Gold Cup, run over three miles and two-and-a-half furlongs, has a history longer than most races at The Festival™. The first ‘Cheltenham Gold Cup’ took place in July 1819 and was a Flat race over three miles on Cleeve Hill, overlooking the present racecourse. The inaugural winner, Spectre, won a prize of 100 guineas for his owner. It wasn’t until 12 March 1924 when the race was run as we know it now, although in those days it took place on what is now the Old Course and was overshadowed by the National Hunt Chase. That first renewal was won by the five-year-old Red Splash, who earned connections £685! The race was first abandoned due to frost in 1931 and in 1937 due to flooding, but the five intervening years saw the most prolific horse in the race’s history – Golden Miller. He won five consecutive Gold Cups between 1932 and 1936 and also managed a Grand National for good measure in 1934. The Vincent O’Brien-trained Cottage Rake became the first multiple winner in the post-war era winning all three renewals from 1948-50. Such was his success that he helped to popularise the Gold Cup, and The Festival™ itself, with the Irish public. During the 1960s the legendary Arkle cemented his name in racing’s Hall of Fame by winning all three renewals from 1964-66. Such was Arkle’s superiority prior to his final victory that he was sent off the 1-10 favourite and the Tom Dreaper-trained icon remains the shortest-priced winner in the race’s history. Perhaps the most remarkable feat by a trainer came in 1983 when Michael Dickinson saddled the first five finishers. Bregawn, ridden by Graham Bradley came out on top but can you name the other four? Captain John, Wayward Lad, Silver Buck and Ashley House, in case you were left scratching your head. Dawn Run created another piece of history in 1986 when Paddy Mullins’ mare became the first, and only, horse to date to win both the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle. A new era of domination began in 2002 when Best Mate, trained by Henrietta Knight, won the first of three consecutive Gold Cups. His final victory in 2004 confirmed him as only the fourth horse to have won the race three or more times. The Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star (pictured above, centre) outclassed his rivals in 2007 but twelve months later he had no answer to his strong-travelling stablemate Denman. In 2009, the pair locked horns again but with Denman only just recovered from a heart condition, Kauto Star gained revenge and became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup. In 2013, Bob’s Worth gave Nicky Henderson his second Gold Cup winner in three years following the success of Long Run in 2011. The 2014 renewal saw Lord Windermere prevail in a dramatic renewal and 2015 had its fair share of drama as Coneygree became the first novice since Captain Christy in 1974 to lift the Gold Cup. Four of the last five renewals have seen trainers win the race for the first time with Don Cossack, Sizing John, Native River and Al Boum Photo landing the spoils for their respective trainers, but Al Boum Photo put an end to that last year as he secured his trainer Willie Mullins’ second Gold Cup on the bounce. Unfortunately for all those involved he couldn’t make it a hat-trick in 2021, however he returns today to try and make it a third win in the race after Minella Indo took the race last year. Henry de Bromhead had already had a fantastic Festival™ and made it a one-two in last’s renewal, and could we have another dual winner, or will someone else add their name to the cup?

FACTS & STATS THE ST. Horses are only qualified for this race if they have either been placed first or second in two hunter chases since October 2019, won two open Point-to-Point races in that same timescale, or a combination of the two, with some extra allowances. PORLOCK BAY Another race that was affected by last year’s pandemic, professional riders were given an unusual chance to ride in the race. Porlock Bay was smuggled away in midfield by jockey Lorcan Williams, but once those in front of him began to wilt away he came there travelling strongly. Race regular Billaway had tracked the leaders and had all of them beat bar the Will Biddick-trained ten-year-old, and in a brilliant finish Porlock Bay prevailed by a short head over the battling Billaway.

BOB AND CO was still going well when unseating 3 out in this last year and he went on to make amends when edging out Billaway in the Champion Hunters at Punchestown in April. Paul Nicholls charge made a respectable return when second in a steadily-run race at Haydock and shades the vote over Billaway, who’s been second in the last 2 renewals. SOUTH WEST REGION FREQUENT RUNNER SCHEME

The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton. There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training. Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022. All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three. At the end of the South West Jumps Season, the over 40winner will receive an Equi-trek horsebox for 12 months. CURRENT STANDINGS (as of 11 March 2022) 40+ horses

FACTS & STATS THE MRS PADDY POWER MARES’ STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

The Grade 2 Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Steeple Chase is a fairly new addition to The Festival™, providing an excellent further opportunity for high-class racing mares under National Hunt rules and perhaps creating a springboard for a potential Gold Cup winner like the great Dawn Run. Run over two miles, four and a half furlongs, those running in the race will have to carry 11st 2lb, with penalties assessed on the class of race they have won over the past 18 months - 3lb for the winner of a Grade 2 chase and 5lb for the winner of a Grade 1. See how Concertista carries 11st 5lb after taking a Grade 2 chase at Cork in December, while Scarlet And Dove carries 11st 5lb after her Grade 2 success at Limerick in March 2020.

COLREEVY It was almost a given that Willie Mullins would get off to a flyer in the inaugural running on the Mares’ Chase. Eventual winner Colreevy battled it out with stablemate Elimay in a brilliant finish under a fine ride from Paul Townend. The subsequent Grade 1 winner was up with the pace throughout and jumped better than shown previously, with Mark Walsh and Elimay never far behind. The two quickened clear and despite looking like she would have to settle for second, Colreevy plugged on to see off Elimay in a thrilling finish.

PLAY SMARTER

ELIMAY had to settle for second behind a very classy stablemate in the inaugural running of this but can go one better now. Mount Ida beat the selection at Fairyhouse in January but there is a worry she’ll jump out to her right back on a left-handed track. She got away with it in the Kim Muir last year but may not do so against an opponent of Elimay’s calibre. Concertista is best of the rest.

FACTS & STATS THE MARTIN PIPE CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION The Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, named in honour of the former trainer and father of current trainer David, is now in its fourteenth year. Run over two miles, four and a half furlongs, this race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-145 and is restricted solely to conditional jockeys. It is the final race of this year’s Festival™ - we hope you can finish it off in style by backing the winner! LAST YEAR’S

CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP

WINNER

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS

RUN OVER TWO MILES, FOUR FURLONGS & 56 YARDS

Our final race of last year saw Sean O’Keeffe win on the fast-improving Galopin Des Champs. In a race that often throws up a well handicapped horse, we had two in the eventual winner and the Skelton trained Langer Dan, who lines up again today. A big striking horse, Sean O’Keeffe masterly moved up behind the leaders to grab the inside rail and in doing so stole a few lengths on his chief rival. He showed an excellent turn of foot to pull away from the runner-up, who will be hoping not to bump into a future Grade 1 star this year.

PLAY SMARTER

ADAMANTLY CHOSEN is highly progressive and goes through his races like one who will be suited by the nature of this event, so he gets the nod in front of Chemical Energy, who fits a similar mould. Needless to say, there’s a whole host of other interesting contenders from Ireland, while Langer Dan (second in last year’s renewal) looks the pick of the British contingent.

The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegeors that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar

Touts

JCR is taking strong action against touts. Touting is seen by some as a legitimate way of buying or selling last minute tickets but many tickets sold by touts are fraudulent or counterfeit. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout. Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website.

All you do at the Racecourse including transactions as well as entry onto the Racecourse are subject to the Terms and Conditions. For details see the Racecourse Website www.cheltenham.co.uk. A copy is also available at the Racecourse Office.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
