THURSDAY THURSDAY 16 MARCH

THE JOCKEY CLUB

Welcome to Day Three of The Cheltenham Festival where we continue with our four days of incredible racing!

St Patrick’s Thursday is a favourite day of The Festival for many keen racegoers, and it’s clear to see why. The feature race of the day is the Ryanair Chase, an event which always produces a fantastic spectacle and is swiftly followed by the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. The action comes thick and fast and we can’t wait to see what stories are about to unfold on the turf.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who continue to support this wonderful event Today’s sponsors include; Turners, Pertemps, Ryanair, Paddy Power, Magners and the JRL Group.

As always, we’ve put on a special schedule of entertainment around the racecourse to keep you busy before, in-between and after racing At 11.30am and again at 12.30pm, racegoers will find a troop of Irish Dancers putting on an epic performance by the Best Mate statue – so head on over to get really into the swing of things. Our punters panel will once again be live from the Parade Ring before racing, while at 1pm in the same location, singer Anja Sei will be performing.

After racing in The Centaur, contemporary Irish band LAMPA will keep the party going with a thrilling set starting at 5.45pm. Alternatively stick around the Parade Ring where from 6.15pm, the Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival Sale will be taking place.

Over the last two days we’ve been running the ‘Love our Turf’ campaign and will continue to do so throughout The Festival. This new initiative, which was launched at The November meeting, seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the Home of Jump Racing and our local community This will be most notable across all main routes back to the town, where you will find wayfinding ushers, street entertainment, enhanced cleaning and an increased number of toilets along the way

Thanks to each and every one of you for coming to the Cheltenham Festival today The impact the event and your attendance has on the local community is staggering, with a new report carried out by The University of Gloucestershire revealing that in 2022, The Festival brought an estimated £274million to the local economy.

We wish you a wonderful day

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount –or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Turners Novices’

Chase, first run in 2011, is a two and a half mile Grade 1 contest for novices. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to senior ranks. Grade 1 contests are the highest level of National Hunt racing so some classy horses are lining up. In terms of weight, the whole field carried 11st 7lb.

TIMEFORM VIEW Progressive hurdler last season who has performed well in this sphere without winning, third of 11 to Stage Star in 2m4f handicap here in January.Very hard to make a case for in this grade, however

DECLARED RUNNERS 9 2022: BOB OLINGER (IRE) 7 11 4 Rachael Blackmore 6-5 (Henry de Bromhead) 4 ran

Stewards Note: UNEXPECTED PARTY: Following its run on 28/1/2023 it was reported that the horse lost a shoe.

Probable S.P’s: 5-4 Mighty Potter (FR), 4-1 Appreciate It (IRE), 11-2 Banbridge (IRE), 12-1 Balco Coastal (FR), Stage Star (IRE), 20-1 James du Berlais (FR), 100-1 Notlongtillmay (GB), 150-1 Unexpected Party (FR), 300-1 Christopher Wood (IRE)

MIGHTY POTTER has been hugely impressive in winning his first three chase outings, powering away to land the Scalp Novices’ Chase at Leopardstown last time, and with more to come he’s the obvious way to go Appreciate It hasn’t achieved as much over fences but his hurdling class brings him into the reckoning, while another solid performance is expected from Bainbridge.

Final is a Premier Handicap Hurdle run over three miles and is restricted to horses that finished in the first four in one of the many Pertemps Qualifiers run throughout the season. Gordon Elliott has his usual strong hand, with MAXXUM taken to provide him with a fourth win since 2018. This 6-y-o looked firmly on the up with 2 wins at the end of last year and it’s easy to forgive his latest run at Leopardstown as he was badly hampered on the home turn. Thanksforthehelp scored with any amount in hand at Chepstow on his recent return after wind surgery and rates a major threat. The Bosses Oscar, runner-up in 2021, and Walking On Air complete the shortlist.

THE JOCKEY CLUB RACECOURSES SOUTH WEST REGION FREQUENT RUNNER SCHEME

The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton.

There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.

Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022.

All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:

1 star - 18 plus runners 2 stars - 15-17 3 stars - 12-14 4 stars – 8-11 5 stars – less than 8

The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.

THE RYANAIR STEEPLE CHASE FA CT S AN D ST AT IS TI CS

The Grade 1 Ryanair Steeple Chase is a race for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated in excess of 130 and is run over the intermediate trip of two miles, four and a half furlongs. It therefore suits horses that perhaps find the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on the sharp side and those that find the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup trip a step too far at this stage in their careers. Always a competitive race at The Festival – Shishkin will be looking to build on his win in the Ascot Chase.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Horses rated 170+ are 4-5

KEY TRENDS

The past 9 winners were French-bred

5 of the past 7 winners were trained by Willie Mullins

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

ALLAHO

Allaho wrote himself into the history books as only the second horse to win the Ryanair twice, the first being Albertas Run in 2011/12. The Cheveley Park owned eight-year-old had romped home the previous year and came here with a big reputation He once again went from the front under Paul Townend and had all his rivals pushing away two furlongs from home. He got in tight to the last but it didn’t stop his momentum as he powered clear to win by 14 lengths.

GRADE 1

Run over two miles, four furlongs & 127 yards. 17 fences to be jumped

Total prize fund of £375,000 £211,012 to the winner

The Ryanair Steeple Chase, or the Festival Trophy Steeple Chase to give it its registered name, was introduced in 2005 when a fourth day was added to The Festival. Some think that it is the reincarnation of the Cathcart Challenge Cup but that isn’t strictly true as that race was restricted to first and second-season chasers. Run over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs, the race was initially granted Grade 2 status and was sponsored by the Daily Telegraph.

Thisthatandtother had proven his liking for Cheltenham by finishing runner-up in that season’s BetVictor Gold Cup, December Gold Cup and re-scheduled Victor Chandler Chase. Memories of his fall when sent off favourite for the previous season’s Arkle were soon forgotten as the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding won out in a gripping battle with Fondmort in the hands of Ruby Walsh.

Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the first trainer and jockey to win the Ryanair twice when Taranis, the youngest winner of the race, beat the unfortunate Our Vic in a gripping dive for the line. A neck was the official verdict – the shortest winning distance in the race’s history. The David Pipe-trained Our Vic had been pulled-up in the inaugural race and finished 9th behind Fondmort before his narrow defeat in 2007 but twelve months later, the year the race achieved Grade 1 status, he gained compensation with a five length victory in the hands of Timmy Murphy.

In 2009 Imperial Commander gave us all a glimpse of what was to come when staying on gamely in the hands of Paddy Brennan to beat the 2006 Arkle and 2007 Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes. Twelve months later, the Nigel TwistonDavies-trained Imperial Commander returned to Cheltenham to land the Gold Cup; beating Denman by seven lengths

Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run proved the biggest priced winner of the Ryanair when dispelling his starting price of 14-1 to win under A. P. McCoy in 2010. He was sent off at 6-1 for the following season’s renewal but the result was the same. Under a typical McCoy drive Albertas Run became the first horse to win the race twice In fact, he went very close to a hat-trick of victories but at the age of eleven he was unable to handle the finishing kick of his younger rival Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson-trained winner was a well supported 7-2 favourite and he became the first outright winning favourite of the race, thanks in part to jockey Barry Geraghty.

The 2013 renewal saw the widest margin winner of the Ryanair when Cue Card routed his rivals by nine lengths. After running well in defeat in the 2011 Supreme and 2012 Arkle, the 2010 Champion Bumper winner got back to winning ways for father and son team Colin and Joe Tizzard.

Dynaste gave his trainer David Pipe a second victory in the race in 2014 with a two-and-a-quarterlength success, some six years after Our Vic landed the spoils for the Pond House team. Uxizandre gave jockey AP McCoy the perfect Festival send off as he produced a fine front-running display to win the race four years ago.

Willie Mullins landed back-to-back Ryanair Chases in 2016 and 2017 courtesy of Vautour and Un De Sceaux. However, the master of Closutton was denied a hat-trick twelve months later as Henry De Bromhead’s Balko des Flos beat Un de Sceaux by four and a half lengths, but it wasn’t long for Mullins to wait to regain the crown as Min put in an exhibition of jumping to win the 2020 renewal of the race.

The 2019 renewal saw a brave performance from Paul Nicholls’ Frodon, who battled back bravely up the hill under Bryony Frost to defeat Aso, third in 2018, by just over a length to begin what came to be known as ‘The Golden Hour’. The pair returned to jubilant scenes in the winners’ enclosure with a first Grade 1 triumph for a horse that is very popular with the racing public

In 2021 we saw the emergence of a new superstar, Allaho. Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old proved to be one of the more popular bets of the week after a significant market support just before the off He returned last year to defend his crown and once more we were treated to another jumping exhibition, as he romped home by 14-lengths. It further extended Mullins as the record holding trainer, who now sits on five wins. This year there will be a new name on the roll of honour, after an unfortunate setback for the defending champion.

FLOORING PORTER

It was a day of defended titles as Flooring Porter was given one of the rides of the week by Danny Mullins Gavin Cromwell’s seven-year-old was given an easy lead by his rivals in a race that lacked front-runners He jumped fantastically throughout the contest, hardly putting a foot wrong. Coming to the top of the hill Danny gave him an allimportant breather before setting him alight coming to the last to win the race in back-to-back years.

The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long-distance hurdle race in the calendar. It was introduced to The Festival in 1972 when it replaced the Spa Hurdle and was initially known as the Lloyds Bank Stayers’ Hurdle. Originally held on Tuesday or Wednesday until it was switched to the Thursday in 1993, the inaugural race was won by Parlour Moor, trained by Harry Thomson Jones and ridden by Macer Gifford.

Tommy Carberry steered Brown Lad to victory in 1975 for trainer Jim Dreaper before becoming the first jockey to win the race twice when partnering the Peter Easterby-trained Town Ship to victory in 1977. In 1982 Crimson Embers gave Fulke Walwyn his first of three Stayers’ Hurdle successes when partnered by Stuart Shilston and the trio combined again four years later when Crimson Embers became the first horse to regain the title and at eleven, the oldest winner of the race

Galmoy became the first horse to win back-to-back renewals in 1987 and 1988 for trainer John Mulhern and jockey Tommy Carmody. The Barry Hills-trained Nomadic Way was equally at home racing on the level or over hurdles and in 1992 won the Stayers’ Hurdle with those famous Sangster colours carried by Jamie Osborne. Martin Pipe recorded the first of two Stayers’ Hurdle successes in 1994 when Balasani held off all challengers under Mark Perrett and two years later Cyborgo followed suit when ridden by David Bridgwater.

Multiple winners were aplenty in the 2000s. The French raider Baracouda set the trend when winning in the famous silks of J. P. McManus in 2002 and 2003 for Francois and Thierry Doumen

2005 proved a landmark year for more than one reason The title of the race was changed to the World Hurdle when Ladbrokes took over the sponsorship and it also saw the emergence of one of the best-known names associated with the race

The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever dominated the race during the mid-part of the decade winning three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Graham Lee did the steering for his first success whilst Paddy Brennan took over for his second success and Denis O’Regan for the third, meaning that Inglis Drever is the only multiple winner in the race’s history to be ridden by three different jockeys.

Prior to 2009 Paul Nicholls had been out of luck in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Big Buck’s hadn’t looked anything out of the ordinary in his native France, winning twice from 13 starts, but in the hands of Nicholls he blossomed into the best hurdler of his generation and arguably the best we have ever seen.

The 2009 Festival provided the springboard to a career that saw him win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles from 2009 to 2012 under the tutorage of Ruby Walsh. In fact, from January 2009 to December 2012 the stylish hurdler went a total of 18 races unbeaten. In four short years, Big Buck’s, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the most successful horse, trainer and jockey in the race’s history

Injury prevented the superstar defending his title in 2013 when the Charles Byrnes-trained Solwhit took full advantage under Paul Carberry – 36 years after his father had won with Town Ship.

With Sun Bets taking over the sponsorship in 2017 and changing the race title back to the Stayers’ Hurdle, the final World Hurdle saw Colin Tizzard’s brilliant hurdler Thistlecrack land the spoils, stretching clear up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by seven lengths at the line.

The inaugural Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle saw trainer Willie Mullins gain a first success in the 3m prize with Nichols Canyon and Mullins was back in the Winner’s Enclosure twelve months later with Penhill Paisley Park’s dominance of the stayers’ hurdling arena began in 2019 and he duly landed the Grade 1 prize here at The Festival. Paisley Park and dual Stayers’ Hurdle winner Flooring Porter are both back to try and win the race again. Previous winners have a great record in the race and if Flooring Porter is able to get his head in front for a third time, the roof may well come off.

PLAY SMARTER

An open renewal but TEAHUPOO has taken his form to another level this season, holding off Klassical Dream in the Hatton’s Grace at Fairyhouse before easily defying a penalty in a Grade 2 at Gowran over this trip, so Gordon Elliott’s 6-y-o could be the answer Flooring Porter hasn’t had the ideal preparation but must be respected as he bids for a third straight win in this, while French-raider Gold Tweet shouldn’t be underestimated given the manner of his win in the Cleeve Hurdle over C&D.

THE MAGNERS PLATE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (PREMIER HANIDCAP)

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Magners Plate is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs. Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing for connections and punters alike. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. Put simply, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight carried - see how 157 rated Haut En Couleurs carries 1lb more than the 156-rated Two For Gold.

The Jack de Bromhead Mares Novices’ Hurdle

RACE DESCRIPTION

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This race has also been allocated Grade 2 status which makes it a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch contenders lining up. Initially all runners are allocated 11st 2lb (4yo 10st 6lb) before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here - see how Magical Zoe carries 5lb extra for her Grade Three success at Down Royal.

White is the new Orange

Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing

The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white.

•Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do.

•Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change

•Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored.

•Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport

THE FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP AMATEUR JOCKEYS’

HANDICAPSTEEPLECHASE(SPONSOREDBYTHEJRLGROUP)

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Steeple Chase (Sponsored by the JRL Group) is another handicap, this time for horses which possess an official rating from 0 to 145 and will be run over three miles and two furlongs. Unike the rest of the handicaps on today’s card, this one is limited to amateur jockey however the weight allocation remains the same as our previous handicaps The higher a horse’s official BHA rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry - see how the 145-rated Mr Incredible, carries 1lb more than Annual Invictus, who is rated 144.

KEY TRENDS

The past 4 winners were novices

9 of the past 13 winners returned at single figures

10 of the past 11 winners were rated between 137-143

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

CHAMBARD

Lucy Turner had a day to remember in our final race of day three. Chambard was given a patient ride in a race that can be a bit frantic with so many runners Embarking on their second circuit she began to move forward on the Venetia Williams ten-year-old to join those at the head of affairs Mister Coffey emerged as the main danger to Chambard but couldn’t find that extra gear to go past him It rounded off a superb Thursday at Cheltenham.

HANDICAP CHASE

Run over three miles& two furlongs 21 fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £75,000 £36,667 to the winner

PLAY SMARTER

Unsurprisingly claims can be made for plenty and it could just pay to side with ANIGHTINLAMBOURN. Ben Pauling’s mare has already enjoyed a fine season, impressively making it 3 wins from her last 4 starts at the November Meeting and an 8lb higher mark may not prevent another bold showing from this likeable 9-y-o. Irish-raiders Angels Dawn and Mr Incredible are others to consider, with Beauport and the progressive Stumptown also highly respected.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.

All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.

Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident &
