There’s a distinct air of Irish flair today as we celebrate St Patrick’s Thursday at the Cheltenham Festival. With exciting races, top-class horses, and the unmistakable energy of the day, it’s a perfect mix of racing excellence and festive spirit.
Today’s feature event is the Ryanair Steeple Chase at 3:20pm, where Protektorat, the defending champion, faces fierce competition from Fact To File, last year’s Festival winner, and Il Est Francais, King George runner-up. Additionally, Teahupoo defends his crown in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle.
Racing fans can enjoy a thrilling day with top-class races such as the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, the Pertemps Network Final, and the TrustATrader Plate, all featuring fierce competition across the day.
The excitement begins in The Centaur, where Paddy Power’s Preview Panel will be offering expert insights and analysis starting at 11:30am. Hear from leading racing figures as they break down the key contenders and provide their predictions for the day ahead.
Also, head to the Parade Ring at 12:25pm for the Parade Ring Preview Show. Racing experts and legends will share their thoughts on the day’s key contests, offering the perfect build-up to the thrilling action.
For those seeking luxury, The Orchard is the place to be, offering unparallelled hospitality, exclusive brands, and a premium experience for Club Enclosure ticket holders, Owners and Trainers, and Cheltenham Annual Members.
Today, we also celebrate St Patrick’s Day with special festivities that blend the magic of Irish culture with world-class racing. Don’t miss the opportunity to embrace the spirit of the day in the Guinness Village.
We extend our sincere thanks to our racing sponsors: Ryanair, Jack Richards, Pertemps, Paddy Power, TrustATrader and Thames Materials. Their ongoing support is invaluable in making today’s racing action possible.
With St Patrick’s Thursday now in full swing, excitement builds towards the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup tomorrow. Limited tickets remain, so act quickly to secure your place at one of the biggest events in sport.
Enjoy your day at Cheltenham – the pinnacle of Jump racing. We look forward to welcoming you back to this iconic sporting venue again soon.

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount –or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

*Standings after the 5th race yesterday
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This race has also been allocated Grade 2 status which makes it a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch contenders lining up. This year, the penalty structure has been removed and as such, all will be allocated an initial weight of 11st 4lb, with Galileo Dame, as the only four-year-old, allocated 10st 8lb.
6 of the 9 winners were trained in Ireland
6 of the 9 winners returned had run at least 4 times over hurdles
Despite being rated 19lb inferior to Gigginstown hotpot Brighterdayshead, Golden Ace maintained her unbeaten record over hurdles when taking this contest 12 months ago The steadily run nature would not have played to Brighterdaysahead’s strengths but we can take nothing away from the winner Golden Ace, who demonstrated an exhilarating turn of foot to power up the hill and land a huge Grade Two prize for Jeremy Scott, Lorcan Williams and connections On Tuesday, she went one better and achieved Grade One glory in the Unibet Champion Hurdle.
Run over two miles, 179 yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped

The biggest field ever assembled in this contest and it’s every bit as competitive as you would expect. SIXANDAHALF developed into a useful stayer on the Flat last season and continued that progression over hurdles when routing some decent horses at Fairyhouse in January. Smart French bumper winner Karoline Banbou could hardly have been more impressive when shedding her maiden tag last month and remains completely unexposed, while Jubilee Alpha is a serious contender for the home team.

Arguably the biggest change to this year’s Festival is the return of the Novice Handicap Chase, which replaces the Grade One Golden Miller Novices’ Chase. It was originally first staged in 2005 but as it’s quality rose, so did the upper ceiling, which in 2018 increased from 140 to 145. In 2019, subsequent Gold Cup winner A Plus Tard won the race. The race itself works like any handicap of this nature, see how Springwell Bay, rated 154, carries 11st 12lb, compared to FireFox, rated 150, carrying 11st 8lb.

The return of the Handicap Novices’ Chase means we have to go back five years ago, to revisit Imperial Aura’s win for Kim Bailey and David Bass The quality very much came to the fore as joint favourites Imperial Aura and Galvin battled things out up the Cheltenham hill Kim Baileys runner had been given the dream ride up in the vanguard, ultimately getting first run on Galvin, which no doubt played a vital role in defeating his rival by three lengths.

This Pertemps Network Final is a Premier Handicap Hurdle run over three miles and is restricted to horses that finished in the first four in one of the many Pertemps Qualifiers run throughout the season. Horses who have won a qualifier are also automatically given a place in the field, as part of a new change this year. Each horse’s weight is determined by their official BHA rating, meaning the higher the rating, the bigger the weight the horse has to carry - see how Thomas Mor, rated 143, carries 4lb more than the 139-rated Karl des Tourelles.
Monimral sprung a surprise in the mud last year when winning at odds of 25/1 for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden He was sat right at the back of the field for most of the race but the frantic pace meant he was pulled into contention as they turned for home. There still looked to be five or six travelling better but Monmiral stuck his head down and in the first-time blinkers, he galloped all the way to the line to deny a gallant effort from Kyntara, who was forced to settle for second

FEET OF A DANCER shaped well on her first try at this trip when third at Leopardstown in December and has a very similar profile to that of Mrs Milner who went on to win this race for the yard in 2021, having also made the frame in the same qualifier, so she’s an appealing candidate, not least given her good record when fresh. Win Some Lose Some is proving most progressive and has to be shortlisted, with Jerijo du Reponet and D Art D Art others to note.

The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton.
There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.
The Championship for the 2023/2024 season will start at Warwick on 25 September and will conclude at Warwick on the 30 May 2024.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows
1 star - 18 plus runners 2 stars - 15-17 3
- 12-14 4
– 8-11 5 stars – less than 8
The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.
STANDINGS (as of 10 March 2025)
The Grade 1 Ryanair Steeple Chase is a race for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated in excess of 130 and is run over the intermediate trip of two miles, four and a half furlongs. It therefore suits horses that perhaps find the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase on the sharp side and those that find the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup trip a step too far at this stage in their careers. It is always a competitive race at The Festival.
After finishing third and fifth in the previous two Gold Cups, Protektorat brought a high level of form to the contest and looked the ideal type for a soft-ground Ryanair He made use of his speed to sit up with the pace, which was an honest one set by Stage Star and Harry Cobden. Harry Skelton looked confident aboard the nine-year-old but didn’t have things all his own way as favourite Envoi Allen laid down a stern challenge. Protektorat however would not be denied and stayed on strongly to win.
Run over two miles, four furlongs & 127 yards. 17 fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £375,000 £211,012 to the winner

The Ryanair Steeple Chase, or the Festival Trophy Steeple Chase to give it its registered name, was introduced in 2005 when a fourth day was added to The Festival. Some think that it is the reincarnation of the Cathcart Challenge Cup but that isn’t strictly true as that race was restricted to first and second-season chasers. Run over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs, the race was initially granted Grade 2 status and was sponsored by the Daily Telegraph.
Thisthatandtother had proven his liking for Cheltenham by finishing runner-up in that season’s BetVictor Gold Cup, December Gold Cup and re-scheduled Victor Chandler Chase. Memories of his fall when sent off favourite for the previous season’s Arkle were soon forgotten as the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding won out in a gripping battle with Fondmort in the hands of Ruby Walsh.
Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the first trainer and jockey to win the Ryanair twice when Taranis, the youngest winner of the race, beat the unfortunate Our Vic in a gripping dive for the line. A neck was the official verdict – the shortest winning distance in the race’s history. The David Pipe-trained Our Vic had been pulled-up in the inaugural race and finished 9th behind Fondmort before his narrow defeat in 2007 but twelve months later, the year the race achieved Grade 1 status, he gained compensation with a five length victory in the hands of Timmy Murphy.
In 2009 Imperial Commander gave us all a glimpse of what was to come when staying on gamely in the hands of Paddy Brennan to beat the 2006 Arkle and 2007 Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes. Twelve months later, the Nigel TwistonDavies-trained Imperial Commander returned to Cheltenham to land the Gold Cup; beating Denman by seven lengths
Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run returned one of the bigger priced winners of the Ryanair when dispelling his starting price of 14-1 to win under A. P. McCoy in 2010. He was sent off at 6-1 for the following season’s renewal but the result was the same. Under a typical McCoy drive Albertas Run became the first horse to win the race twice In fact, he went very close to a hat-trick of victories but at the age of eleven he was unable to handle the finishing kick of his younger rival Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson-trained winner was a well supported 7-2 favourite and he became the first outright winning favourite of the race, thanks in part to jockey Barry Geraghty.
The 2013 renewal saw an emphatic winner of the Ryanair when Cue Card routed his rivals by nine lengths. After running well in defeat in the 2011 Supreme and 2012 Arkle, the 2010 Champion Bumper winner got back to winning ways for father and son team Colin and Joe Tizzard.
Dynaste gave his trainer David Pipe a second victory in the race in 2014 with a two-and-a-quarterlength success, some six years after Our Vic landed the spoils for the Pond House team. Uxizandre gave jockey AP McCoy the perfect Festival send off as he produced a fine front-running display to win the race four years ago.
Willie Mullins landed back-to-back Ryanair Chases in 2016 and 2017 courtesy of Vautour and Un De Sceaux. However, the master of Closutton was denied a hat-trick twelve months later as Henry De Bromhead’s Balko des Flos beat Un de Sceaux by four and a half lengths, but it wasn’t long for Mullins to wait to regain the crown as Min put in an exhibition of jumping to win the 2020 renewal of the race.
The 2019 renewal saw a brave performance from Paul Nicholls’ Frodon, who battled back bravely up the hill under Bryony Frost to defeat Aso, third in 2018, by just over a length to begin what came to be known as ‘The Golden Hour’. The pair returned to jubilant scenes in the winners’ enclosure with a first Grade 1 triumph for a horse that is very popular with the racing public
In 2021 we saw the emergence of a new superstar, Allaho. Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old proved to be one of the more popular bets of the week after a significant market support just before the off He returned in 2022 to defend his crown and once more we were treated to another jumping exhibition, as he romped home by 14-lengths. In his absence, Envoi Allen took up the mantle for Cheveley Park but last year the race stayed in Britain, as Protektorat made it a first home win since Frodon in 2019.

The ultimate stamina test for hurdlers, the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle Race is run over three miles. Recent famous winners on the illustrious Roll of Honour include Baracouda, Inglis Drever, multiple winner Big Buck’s and more recently Thistlecrack, Nichols Canyon, Penhill, Paisley Park and Flooring Porter. As is often the case in a Grade 1 hurdle, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 10lb.

After finishing third in 2023, Teahupoo made amends to win for favourite backers under an accomplished ride by Jack Kennedy. In second was dual winner Flooring Porter as well as previous winners Sire Du Berlais and Paisley Park, back in fifth and tenth respectively He would have been far less inconvenienced than most by the steady pace and ultimately his class shone through as he scampered up the hill to win by three lengths.

The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long-distance hurdle race in the calendar. It was introduced to The Festival in 1972 when it replaced the Spa Hurdle and was initially known as the Lloyds Bank Stayers’ Hurdle. Originally held on Tuesday or Wednesday until it was switched to the Thursday in 1993, the inaugural race was won by Parlour Moor, trained by Harry Thomson Jones and ridden by Macer Gifford.
Tommy Carberry steered Brown Lad to victory in 1975 for trainer Jim Dreaper before becoming the first jockey to win the race twice when partnering the Peter Easterby-trained Town Ship to victory in 1977. In 1982 Crimson Embers gave Fulke Walwyn his first of three Stayers’ Hurdle successes when partnered by Stuart Shilston and the trio combined again four years later when Crimson Embers became the first horse to regain the title and at eleven, the oldest winner of the race.
Galmoy became the first horse to win back-to-back renewals in 1987 and 1988 for trainer John Mulhern and jockey Tommy Carmody. The Barry Hills-trained Nomadic Way was equally at home racing on the level or over hurdles and in 1992 won the Stayers’ Hurdle with those famous Sangster colours carried by Jamie Osborne. Martin Pipe recorded the first of two Stayers’ Hurdle successes in 1994 when Balasani held off all challengers under Mark Perrett and two years later Cyborgo followed suit when ridden by David Bridgwater.
Multiple winners were aplenty in the 2000s. The French raider Baracouda set the trend when winning in the famous silks of J. P. McManus in 2002 and 2003 for Francois and Thierry Doumen. 2005 proved a landmark year for more than one reason The title of the race was changed to the World Hurdle when Ladbrokes took over the sponsorship and it also saw the emergence of one of the best-known names associated with the race
The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever dominated the race during the mid-part of the decade winning three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Graham Lee did the steering for his first success whilst Paddy Brennan took over for his second success and Denis O’Regan for the third, meaning that Inglis Drever is the only multiple winner in the race’s history to be ridden by three different jockeys.
Prior to 2009 Paul Nicholls had been out of luck in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Big Buck’s hadn’t looked anything out of the ordinary in his native France, winning twice from 13 starts, but in the hands of Nicholls he blossomed into the best hurdler of his generation and arguably the best we have ever seen.
The 2009 Festival provided the springboard to a career that saw him win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles from 2009 to 2012 under the tutorage of Ruby Walsh In fact, from January 2009 to December 2012 the stylish hurdler went a total of 18 races unbeaten. In four short years, Big Buck’s, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the most successful horse, trainer and jockey in the race’s history
Injury prevented the superstar defending his title in 2013 when the Charles Byrnes-trained Solwhit took full advantage under Paul Carberry – 36 years after his father had won with Town Ship
With Sun Bets taking over the sponsorship in 2017 and changing the race title back to the Stayers’ Hurdle, the final World Hurdle saw Colin Tizzard’s brilliant hurdler Thistlecrack land the spoils, stretching clear up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by seven lengths at the line.
The inaugural Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle saw trainer Willie Mullins gain a first success in the 3m prize with Nichols Canyon and Mullins was back in the Winner’s Enclosure twelve months later with Penhill. Paisley Park’s dominance of the stayers’ hurdling arena began in 2019 and he duly landed the Grade 1 prize here at The Festival. In 2020, Paddy Power took over their sponsorship, with Lisnagar Oscar springing a surprise in their inaugural year.
Flooring Porter joined the list of dual winners when delivering two perfect front running rides in 2021 and 2022, under the guidance of Danny Mullins Sire Dur Berlais rolled back the years to win at 11 in 2023, while Teahupoo, who finished third that day, made amends to win last year Will he defend his crown his year?

The Trustatrader Plate is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs. Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing for connections and punters alike. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. Put simply, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight carried - see how 157 rated Conflated carries 8lb more than the 149 rated Ginny’s Destiny.

Gavin Cromwell landed an almighty punt in this race a year ago and has a couple of very live chances in MINT BOY and Yeah Man. There’s slightly more substance to the latter’s form but the former could take off over this sort of trip, so is marginally preferred. Johnnywho certainly won’t lack for assistance from the saddle so he’s feared, with Manofthepeople one to consider at longer odds with her rider having won this race before.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
