Champion Day kicked off the 2025 Cheltenham Festival in style, delivering top-class action on the track and setting the stage for an unforgettable week of Jump racing. Today, we embrace the glamour and excitement of Style Wednesday, where racing excellence meets elegance at the Home of Jump Racing.
The highlight of today’s racing is the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, where Jonbon bids to fulfil his destiny. Standing in his way is a formidable Irish challenge, with Marine Nationale, Solness, and former two-time champion Energumene all vying for glory in one of the most thrilling two-mile chases of the season.
Elsewhere, the Turners Novices’ Hurdle promises an epic battle between Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton, as Final Demand takes on The New Lion. Fans will also witness the highly anticipated return of Ballyburn to the Cheltenham Festival in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, following his dominant victory over hurdles on this very day last year.
Off the track, the excitement continues in The Centaur, where the BetMGM Preview Panel will be providing expert insights and analysis on the day’s races from 11.30am. Racing fans should also head to the Parade Ring at 12:25pm for the Preview Show, where leading experts and racing legends will provide their thoughts on today’s key contests. Throughout the day, be sure to explore the activations and experiences on offer, adding to the unique atmosphere of Style Wednesday.
A key feature of today’s festivities is the Slow Fashion Awards, celebrating sustainable style and conscious fashion choices. Racegoers who embrace vintage, pre-loved, or ethically sourced outfits will have the chance to be crowned the most stylish in a competition that champions both elegance and sustainability. To enter, simply head to the Plaza before 2.30 pm, where one of
our fashion scouts will be ready to capture your look. Winners will receive exclusive prizes and be recognised for their commitment to sustainable fashion.
For those looking to indulge in luxury, The Orchard is once again the place to be, offering a unique blend of world-class hospitality and premium entertainment. This year, we are delighted to welcome an exclusive lineup of brands, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience. The Orchard is open to Club Enclosure ticket holders, including Hospitality guests, Owners and Trainers, and Cheltenham Annual Members.
Today’s action would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, and we extend our gratitude to Turners, Brown Advisory, Coral, Glenfarclas, BetMGM, Debenhams and Weatherbys, and for their continued partnership and contribution to this prestigious event.
With the Festival now in full swing, anticipation is building towards the remaining highlights of the week, including the Ryanair Chase tomorrow and the ultimate test of Jump racing, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, on Friday. Limited tickets remain for the final two days of The Festival, so act fast to secure your place at one of the biggest events in sport.
Enjoy your day at Cheltenham, the pinnacle of Jump racing. We look forward to welcoming you back to this iconic sporting venue again soon.

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount –or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

The Grade 1 Turners Novices’ Hurdle is run over two miles and five furlongs and is contested by some of the highest-class novice hurdlers this year. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. All of today’s runners will carry 11st 7lb.
Mercurey set out under Brian Hayes for day two’s opener, he was one of five Closutton runners, with Handstands and Jingko Blue the only other representatives. Ballyburn was a little keen under Paul Townend but travelled better than any in the race He was considered to be the ‘Irish Banker’ of the week and won in the fashion of a good one, putting 13 lengths between him and the second placed Jimmy Du Seuil by the time he found the winning line

A thrilling renewal of this Grade 1 featuring 6 for Mullins and a clash between the potentially top-class pair FINAL DEMAND and The New Lion. The latter was bought by JP McManus for an undisclosed sum after a most striking success in the Challow at Newbury, but it was a performance more about style than substance, whereas the former’s wide-margin win at Leopardstown is very much supported by the timefigure, which sways the vote in his favour. The Yellow Clay is also worthy of plenty of respect.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.
The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over three miles and half a furlong and features this season’s leading novice staying chasers. Many horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to future Gold Cup glory - including recent winners Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 7lb.

Another short priced Irish winner secured our second race of the afternoon He was big at his first few fences but did settle into a better jumping rhythm, despite remaining keen in the hands of Mark Walsh. Sandor Clegane and Stay Away Fay battled for the lead, with Rachael Blackmore stalking them in third on Monty’s Star This duo would put down the biggest challenge to Fact To File but the 2023 Champion Bumper second was more than good enough to secure his first Cheltenham Festival win.

The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is always a hotly contested race with Europe’s top novice staying chasers looking to make a name for themselves over the larger obstacles.
The three miles and half a furlong race was introduced to The Festival in 1946 under the title of the Broadway Novices’ Chase and that inaugural running was won by Birthlaw who was trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Ted Vinall. At 11-years-old he remains the oldest winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. In 1957, Fulke Walwyn became the race’s leading trainer when Mandarin, ridden by Michael Scudamore, gave him his fourth success in the race - adding to the victories of Mountain Prince (1948), On View (1951) and Glenbeigh (1954).
Some legendary names of the National Hunt scene have won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase but perhaps the biggest of them all was Tom Dreaper’s Arkle who won the 1963 renewal before landing a hat-trick of Gold Cups in 1964, 1965 and 1966 Arkle’s rider Pat Taaffe was winning the race for the fourth time following victories on Coneyburrow (1953), Solfen (1960) and Grallagh Cnoc (1961) and when he partnered Proud Tarquin to victory in 1970 he became the leading rider in the race’s history
The Dan Moore-trained Tied Cottage proved a convincing winner under jockey Tommy Carberry in 1976 and four years later went on to land the Gold Cup before being subsequently disqualified having testing positive for a banned substance. 1977 was the Dickinson’s year when Gay Spartan won the race for trainer Tony and jockey Michael.
Several winners have subsequently achieved victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup but Jenny Pitman’s Garrison Savannah did it in subsequent years winning the race in 1990 and the Gold Cup in 1991 when he beat two former champions in Desert Orchid and Norton’s Coin. He almost went into the record books the following month when he went so close to winning the Grand National only giving best to Seagram
In 1992, Miinnehoma was a winning favourite of the race and two years later the Martin Pipe-trained runner went on to win the 1994 Grand National,
confirming that the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase really does unearth some future superstars 1999 saw victory for the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble who later went on to win the 2000 Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls’ Denman was an emphatic ten length winner of the 2007 Brown Advisory Chase before following up in breathtaking style in the following season’s Gold Cup, a feat repeated by Nicky Henderson’s 2012 winner Bobs Worth, as well as the Jim Culloty-trained Lord Windermere twelve months later. Nicholls was back in the winners’ enclosure in 2019 when Topofthegame took a thrilling renewal of the race from Henderson’s Santini.
Willie Mullins won the first of six Brown Advisory Novices’ Chases when Florida Pearl galloped to success under Richard Dunwoody in 1998 before Rule Supreme and Cooldine followed suit in 2004 and 2009 Don Poli’s victory in 2015 saw Mullins join Fulke Walwyn as the race’s leading trainer but he has since surpassed him and now sits on six wins
The Peter Beaumont-trained Hussard Collonges became the joint longest priced winner of the race when landing odds of 33-1 in 2002 – the same price as the 1983 winner Canny Danny Another record was toppled in 2006 when the Paul Nicholls-trained Star De Mohaison became the first, and only, five-year-old winner
Nigel Twiston-Davies ended a 23 year wait for a second winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when Blaklion triumphed under Ryan Hatch in 2016. The 2020 winner was from familiar sources - Champ flew home late on for Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus in one of the finishes of The Festival. Monkfish took the race back to Ireland with a fine performance in 2021 before L’Homme Presse wrestled it back under Charlie Deutsch for Venetia Williams The race stayed in Britain in 2023, as Patrick Neville got his first winner with The Real Whacker.
Willie Mullins made it a record sixth win with 2023 Champion Bumper second Fact To File, jockey Mark Walsh also picked up his first win

Probable S.P’s: 6-5 Ballyburn (IRE), 9-2 Dancing City (FR), 13-2 Better Days Ahead (IRE), 12-1 Gorgeous Tom (IRE), Stellar Story (IRE), 14-1 Lecky Watson (IRE), 18-1 Quai de Bourbon (FR)
Last season’s leading novice hurdler, BALLYBURN has done little to alter the fact he’s a top prospect in this sphere, impressing with his strength at the finish when successful in Grade 1 company at Leopardstown (21.5f) 38 days ago It’s feasible to think the step up to 3m can see him in an even better light and he makes plenty of appeal. Stellar Story, who landed last year’s Albert Bartlett, appeals at longer odds provided he keeps the errors at bay. Dancing City is another to note.

The Championship for the 2023/2024 season will start at Warwick on 25 September and will conclude at Warwick on the 30 May 2024.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows
1 star - 18 plus runners 2 stars - 15-17 3 stars - 12-14 4 stars – 8-11 5 stars – less than 8

The Coral Cup Premier Handicap Hurdle is the first handicap of the afternoon and is a fiercely competitive event – both on the track and in the betting ring! Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the more weight the horse has to carry - see how Maxxum rated 153, carries 2lb more than the 151-rated Ballyadam.

Langer Dan continued to make a name for himself when leaving behind a poor campaign to defend his crown. He arrived to this race from an identical mark and duly bolted up by three-and-a-half-lengths to Ballyadam, who stayed on well from the back of the pack but had ultimately given first run to the Skelton runner. Shanbally Kid completed the placings but this was all about Langer Dan’s fantastic effort to once again claim the Coral Cup.

BE AWARE has held his own in some hot handicaps, catching the eye at Ascot at Christmas The return to this sort of trip will suit and he can give Dan Skelton, the best in Britain at readying one for the Festival these days, a third win in a row in the Coral Cup An extensive shortlist also includes Comfort Zone and Impose Toi for J.P. McManus, last year’s second Ballyadam, and Bunting. Harry Fry’s Beat The Bat is another to note at bigger odds

RACE
One of our newer races, the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase for five-year-olds and upwards is run over Cheltenham’s unique cross country course which provides a variety of fences, banks and turns for the runners to negotiate. Run over three miles five furlongs and 56 yards, this cross-country race is considered one for specialists and therefore previous experience of this unique circuit can be considered advantageous.
10 of the past 14 winners finished unplaced last time out
16 of the 19 winners were trained in Ireland
7 of the 19 winners were owned by JP McManus
With last years race being abandoned we can instead look back at the 2023 renewal. Delta Work made it an impressive three Festival wins under Keith Donoghue after a well fought battle with stablemate Galvin. The 2022 winner jumped excellently the whole way round and excelled when switching to the cross-country fences Galvin did put up a good fight but his lack of experience over the obstacles showed when it really mattered
Run over three miles, five furlongs & 56 yards. 31 obstacles to be jumped

The return as a handicap following a 10-year hiatus and the Irish look set to continue their dominance, top-weight STUMPTOWN selected to extend his winning sequence to 4 having gone unbeaten in this discipline since unseating his rider on cross-country debut at Punchestown last spring. Gavin Cromwell’s 8-y-o is unlikely to have it all his own way however, with former Grade 1 winner Galvin heading up the dangers, which also include Vanillier, Mister Coffey and Latenightpass

Today’s Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeplechase is part of a European race series called The Crystal Cup. As well as here at Cheltenham, the series is competed at racecourses across France, Italy, Belgium, Poland and the Czech Republic.

RACE DESCRIPTION The feature race of the day is the Grade 1 BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, the championship event for two mile chasers Some of the leading chasers from Britain and Ireland will be tackling Cheltenham’s unique undulations at breathtaking speed and there will be no hiding places as the cream usually rises to the top. All today’s runners carry 11st 10lb in the absence of any mares.
The bad mistake from 2/9 favourite El Fabiolo at the fifth fence blew the race wide open 12 months ago and it would be Rachael Blackmore and Captain Guinness who would take full advantage. Edwardstone continued to take them along at a championship pace down the far side but his effort petered out turning for home after those early exertions Gentlemen De Mee was produced late but couldn’t get to Captain Guinness, who despite wandering up the run in, held on to win a dramatic race
Whilst Friday’s Gold Cup is all about stamina, this afternoon’s BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase focuses on speed, with Europe’s top two-mile chasers hoping to add their name to an illustrious Roll of Honour.
The Dan Moore-trained Quita Que won the inaugural National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase in 1959 under Bunny Cox before Tom Dreaper, the leading trainer in the race, and Pat Taaffe teamed up with Fortria to become the first multiple winner of the race in 1960 and 1961. Ever since then there have been many multiple winners of this two mile chase; Drinny’s Double achieving the same feat for trainer Bob Turnell and jockey Frank Nash in 1967 and 1968.
Fred Winter trained his one and only Champion Chase winner in 1971 when Paul Kelleway partnered Crisp to victory, who two years later suffered an agonising defeat by Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.
The Edward Courage-trained Royal Relief became the first horse in the race’s history to regain his title after winning under Bill Smith in 1972 and 1974. Skymas recorded back-to-back wins for trainer Brian Lusk and jockey Mouse Morris in 1976 and 1977 and became the oldest winner, at twelve, on the second of those occasions. The Peter McCreery-trained Hilly Way picked up the baton immediately afterwards winning under Tommy Carmody in 1978 and Ted Walsh in 1979.
The Queen Mother, whose Game Spirit finished runner-up in the race in 1976, had been an unwavering supporter of National Hunt racing and in 1980 the race was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase in celebration of her 80th birthday. Up until her death she was always on hand to give out the trophy each season.
The Robert Earnshaw-ridden Badsworth Boy dominated the race in the early 1980s, winning for three years in succession between 1983 and 1985 for the Dickinson family and he remains the most successful horse in the history of the race. At the end of the 1980s there were two more back-to-back winners of the race Pearlyman tasted glory for John Edwards in 1987 and 1988 and the David Elsworth-trained Barnbrook Again followed suit in 1989 and 1990.
David Nicholson broke his duck in 1994 when Viking Flagship galloped to victory under Adrian Maguire and he didn’t have to wait long for his second when the same horse followed up 12 months later in the hands of Charlie Swan.
The Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer stamped his authority on the race in 2003 before disappointing punters 12 months later when unseating Barry Geraghty. He returned in 2005 and duly made amends, becoming the joint-second oldest winner of the race
In more recent seasons Barry Geraghty has been a leading force. In 2010, he partnered the Colm Murphy-trained Big Zeb to something of a surprise success before teaming up with Nicky Henderson in 2012 and 2013 with Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre respectively That took his tally to five making him joint-leading jockey with Pat Taaffe
And who can forget the 2016 renewal when Sprinter Sacre completed the greatest of comebacks by becoming only the third horse to regain his Champion Chase crown. The ten-year-old had endured a difficult time since winning the race for the first time in 2013 but produced a brilliant display under Nico de Boinville to send the crowd into raptures
Altior gave Nico and trainer Nicky Henderson wins in 2018 & 2019, but his absence saw Politologue take the crown back to Ditcheat in 2020, giving Paul Nicholls a sixth Champion Chase win and owner, the late John Hales, a third after One Man and Azertyuiop had won the race for him in 1998 and 2004 respectively Henry de Bromhead has tasted success in recent years, Special Tiara in 2017 has since been joined by Put The Kettle On in 2021 and then by Captain Guinness last year. Energumene joined an illustrious list of dual winners in 2023 and in doing so gave Willie Mullins back-to-back victories in the race.
Could he become the first since Sprinter Sacre to regain his crown?

JONBON’s only defeats have come at Cheltenham but it’s hard to see what can beat him in this on recent displays and his big day at the Festival has come. He’s looked better than ever this season and more relaxed to boot and can see off the 2022 and 2023 winner Energumene. 2023 Supreme hero Marine Nationale looks to be coming to the boil and can go well.

The Debenhams Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase, named in honour of the late Johnny Henderson, the father of Nicky Henderson and the man who helped safeguard the future of Cheltenham racecourse in the 1960s, is the oldest race that takes place at The Festival. This handicap chase is run over two miles on the Old Course and is often run at a frantic pace. The race has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards and is often one of the most thrilling races of the whole week.
Harry Skelton continued his fine Wednesday, adding a win in the Grand Annual to his Coral Cup victory earlier in the day. He opted to keep Unexpected Party up with the pace, jumping his way to the front on occasion and at the third last he took it up before travelling powerfully down to the penultimate fence. He was nearly headed at the second last by Liberty Hunter but continued to find more to fend off the challenge and give the Skeltons the double.

Willie Mullins won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper for a 13th time in 2024, with the victory of Jasmin de Vaux evenmoresignificant,asitwasthe100th Cheltenham Festival winner for the allconqueringtrainer.
Having first won the race in 1996, when he also rode Wither Or Which to victory, Mullins struck again in 1997 – the year Weatherbys’ association with the race was formed – with Florida Pearl, and again the following year, with Alexander Banquet.Threemorewinswererecorded between2000and2008,whilstsince2012 when Champagne Fever struck, Mullins has won the race seven times and this includesvictoriesinfiveofthepastseven renewals.

The other mare, Bambino Fever, brings the strongest form to the table and has to be greatly respected in receipt of a 7lbs sex-allowance. She won a Grade 2 at Leopardstown’s Dublin Racing Festival, a race which Relegate won for Mullins beforeshelandedtheChampionBumper in2018.
Copacabana, Gameofinches and Sortudo complete the Mullins-trained quintet, with the former – choice of fourtime Champion Bumper-winning rider Patrick Mullins – bidding to become the first horse since Cue Card (2010) to win this race on the back of just one run and no prior Point-to-Point experience. Paul Townend partners Gameofinches, who impressedwhenscoringatPunchestown, whilst his younger sister Jody maintains the partnership with Bambino Fever, the marenotanoptionforPatrickMullinsdue totheweightthatshecarries.

ofthe Champion Bumper forover 25years
The Grade 1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper is the classiest race of its nature run anywhere in the world, and many past winners have developed into top-class hurdlers and chasers. A bumper, officially known as a National Hunt Flat Race, takes place without any hurdles or fences and is aimed at young horses that are likely to develop into jumpers. Only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run If they have run in flat races or have turned out in hurdle races or chases, they are barred from entry.
In what looked another very competitive renewal of the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, it was Patrick Mullins and Jasmin De Vaux who came out on top. Closutton had their usual strong hand coming into the contest but Patrick chose correctly to get aboard Jasmin De Vaux, with the son of Tirwanako looking to relish the testing surface. Romeo Coolio ran an admirable race in second, with favourite Jalon D’oudaries completing the podium.
Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards.

Willie Mullins may dominate this yet again. GAMEOFINCHES looked a really exciting prospect at Punchestown last month and gets a tentative vote over stablemates Copacabana, who created a strong impression when scoring on his debut in recent weeks, and Bambino Fever, who brings winning Graded form from the Dublin Racing Festival. Gordon Elliott has broken the Mullins stranglehold on this a couple of times in the last decade and his Navan Listed winner Kalypso’chance looks best of the remainder
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
