‘Service & Safety Through Partnership’
WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse. We are honoured to host the start of the core winter national hunt season with our two-day Unibet Jump Season Opener. The entries across the two days have been of the highest quality particularly for today’s feature race, the £30,000 Grade Two Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle. This race has been won by some real stars of the sport over the decades. Seven go to post for the Tom Malone Bloodstock Novices’ Chase and there looks to be plenty of future stars in the line-up. And it’s great to see some popular names in the Professor Caroline Tisdall Supports Heroic Jumpers Veterans’ Chase. It is obviously frustrating that we are racing without crowds. We were close to agreeing a trial with crowds with the Welsh Government for this fixture but those plans collapsed when Covid19 rates started to rise again across the country. There are also restrictions on the number of owners we can accommodate due to Welsh Government regulations that differ from the guidelines in England. In the circumstances, I would like to thank all the owners and trainers who have supported us with runners today. We do appreciate you had other options. We are in regular contact with Welsh Government, along with BHA, and will continue to make the case to allow more owners to attend fixtures in Wales. I’d like to thank Sky Sports Racing for their support which ensures comprehensive coverage of the meeting will be available to our customers watching from home. We are also delighted to see the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle being shown on ITV Racing. Finally, a huge thank you Unibet and our other sponsors who have committed to supporting today’s races despite the fact there are no crowds in attendance. In addition to those companies already mentioned, our thanks go to Dragon TV and Film Studios, Weatherbys and iStadia Outdoor LED Screens. Phil Bell EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Silver Forever Paul Ferguson - author of Jumpers To Follow The two-day Jumps Season Opener fixtures goes from strength-to-strength. Regarded by many – myself included – as the ‘unofficial’ start of the new National Hunt season proper, the meeting has grown in stature in recent years, and we have seen the likes of Silviniaco Conti, Cue Card and Altior grace this meeting in their formative years, whilst two subsequent Cheltenham Festival winners – Imperial Aura and Indefatigable – ran well in last year’s Silver Trophy. Today’s card gets underway with the Jumpers To Follow 4-Y-O Hurdle and whilst I am unable to be in attendance myself, I am thoroughly looking forward to the race raising the curtain on what promises to be another fantastic season. The 14th edition of Jumpers To Follow was published last month and two horses who I am particularly looking forward to seeing return to action in the coming weeks began their respective hurdling campaigns here at Chepstow last year. In fact Silver Forever won the mares’ National Hunt novices’ hurdle on today’s card, a race which Paul Nicholls has made his own in recent years. He saddles Kilmington Rose in this afternoon’s renewal and she will bid to provide her trainer with a fourth successive win in the race. The Big Breakaway also made a winning debut here last November, when running out an easy 8-length winner of a 2m3½f maiden hurdle. Colin Tizzard’s expensive purchase followed up under a penalty at Newbury before finishing fourth at the festival, and he rates a very exciting prospect for the staying novice chase division. Whilst I am disappointed not to be on course today, I would like to wish the connections of each horse running over the next two days – particularly those contesting the opener this afternoon – the very best of luck, not only for today but for the whole season. I’m sure I speak for many when saying that I cannot wait to return to Chepstow later in the season, and this time next year for the 2021 Jumps Season Opener. Best of luck for the months ahead, Paul.

The stable runs THYME WHITE today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: HASANKEY trained by L J Morgan, Waltham On The Wolds, 142 miles. RACE SUMMARY It was by no means a strong race VORASHANN won at Fontwell last week, but he did it very easily and looks well-in under a 6-lb penalty on that evidence. Goobinator quickly made up into a fairly useful hurdler last season and has warmed up for this with a spin on the Flat at Ayr, so he’s an interesting contender, as are Thyme White and Blacko, who remain the types to do better at some stage. 1-2-3: 1.VORASHANN (FR) 2.GOOBINATOR (USA) 3.THYME WHITE (FR) KEY colours

PERSIAN WAR
THE UNIBET PERSIAN WAR NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GRADE 2) Persian War (1963–1984) was one of the best hurdlers of the last century. He was a three-time winner of the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in an era of fantastic horses like Bula, Comedy Of Errors, Night Nurse, Monksfield and Sea Pigeon. He won the Triumph Hurdle in 1967, before taking the Champion Hurdle in 1968, 69 and 70. He was owned by the controversial Henry Alper, who employed six different trainers during the horse’s career and often targeted unsuitable races. One of these trainers was the Chepstow trainer Colin Davies. Many felt that with better management, the horse could have achieved even more. The only other three time Champion Hurdle winners have been Hatton’s Grace (1949-51), Sir Ken (1952-54), See You Then (1985-87) and Istabraq (1998-2000). Our race, remembering the great horse, has been won by many future stars including Monsignor (2000), Champagne Harry (2003), Reve de Sivola (2009), Silviniaco Conti (2010) and Fingal Bay (2011). Last years’ winner, Thyme Hill, justified favouritism after being steered home by Richard Johnson for the Philip Hobbs stable. The 6-year-old showed further progression to land both The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) and The Betway Challow Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1).

History of the Jum
CUE CARD,(above) probably the most popular jumper of recent years, was a top class performer, winning 16 races. He won his first novice chase here in 2011 and looked set to win the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup when coming down three out. SILVINIACO CONTI(right) won the Persian War here in 2010 and was third to Cue Card the next year. A consistent top class chaser, the winner of 16 races including the 2013 and 2014 King Georges at Kempton.
BLAKLION(above) won the Persian War here in 2014, and later won the RSA at Cheltenham and the Becher Chase at Aintree. He was fourth in the 2017 Grand National when favourite. The runner-up in that Chepstow race, Vicente, went on to win two Scottish Nationals.
mps Season Opener
ALTIOR,(above) the 34 length winner of a novice hurdle here in 2015, has won 20 out of his 21 races since, including the Arkle and the Champion Chase twice. He’s been the top two mile chaser in Europe for four years despite his one defeat last season.
NATIVE RIVER,(below) who was third on his fencing debut at this meeting in 2015, went on to win the Hennessy and the Welsh National in the following season. He landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup after an epic battle with Might Bite.
