‘Service & Safety Through Partnership’

WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse. We are honoured to host the start of the core winter national hunt season with our two-day Unibet Jump Season Opener. The entries across the two days have been of the highest quality particularly for today’s feature race, the £40,000 Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle. It’s the first venture into race sponsorship for the Wasdell Group. They have expanded significantly in the eleven years since chairman Martin Tedham bought the core company. Now the biggest independent pharmaceutical contract packer in Europe, and an increasingly important player in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, Wasdell employs 850 people at its HQ in Swindon with further facilities in Newcastle, Wellingborough and Dundalk. It is obviously frustrating that we are racing without crowds. We were close to agreeing a trial with crowds with the Welsh Government for this fixture but those plans collapsed when Covid19 rates started to rise again across the country. There are also restrictions on the number of owners we can accommodate due to Welsh Government regulations that differ from the guidelines in England. In the circumstances, I would like to thank all the owners and trainers who have supported us with runners today. We do appreciate you had other options. We are in regular contact with Welsh Government, along with BHA, and will continue to make the case to allow more owners to attend fixtures in Wales. I’d like to thank Sky Sports Racing for their support which ensures comprehensive coverage of the meeting will be available to our customers watching from home. Finally, a huge thank you Unibet and our other sponsors who have committed to supporting today’s races despite the fact there are no crowds in attendance. In addition to those companies already mentioned, our thanks go to Champion Hats, Brocade Racing, Dunraven Windows and the family of John Ayres. PHIL BELL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

FIRST RACE 1.40 ABOUT TWO MILES (2M 11YDS) FOR JUVENILE THREE YRS OLD

THE CHAMPION HATS JUVENILE HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Total race value £7273 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £2873, 2nd £952, 3rd £476, 4th £296, 5th £280, 6th £280, 7th £280, 8th £280. (Penalty Value £3768.84)

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): P Nicholls (36 wins from 160 runners, 22%) runs HELL RED TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): F O’Brien (7 wins from 24 runners, 29%) runs BILLY THE SQUID FANCY THAT: P Nicholls won this race in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. The stable runs HELL RED today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: SANDYBURG trained by H Whittington, Sparsholt, 98 miles. RACE SUMMARY

French import HELL RED showed more than enough on sole start for Guillaume Macaire to suggest that a race of this nature will be within his grasp. Hector de Sivola is clearly thought capable of a good deal better than he was able to show on debut and he could be the one for the forecast ahead of Bourbali. Flat recruit Phoenix Aquilus and newcomers Lustleigh and Sandyburg all need a market check.

THE ROBERT MOTTRAM MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Robert Mottram Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Dunraven Windows Novices’ Chase This is one of the highlights of the season at Chepstow. Previously the race has been won by horses as good as Balthazar King (2010), Cue Card (2011), Fingal Bay (2012) and Balder Succes (2013). The 2016 winner was Rock The Kasbah, who followed up with another win in a handicap chase at this meeting last year and who is expected to run again today. The 2017 winner was the top class but ill fated Finian’s Oscar. Last years winner was Jarveys Plate who beat odds of favourite Reserve Tank. The 2015 form worked out particularly well, in second behind Cocktails At Dawn, As De Mee subsequently won the Grand Sefton Chase at Aintree, the third was Coral Welsh Grand National and Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Native River, and fourth was Blaklion, winner of the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival! Robert Mottram was our Head Groundsman and Estate Manager having worked at Chepstow Racecourse for nearly 35 years. He sadly passed away in February 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Robert was totally dedicated to his beloved Chepstow and was highly respected, not only here, but throughout the racing industry. He was one of the great groundsmen in British Racing and, as a result of his wealth of knowledge and experience, was instrumental in many of the advances at Chepstow in track management..

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): P Nicholls (36 wins from 160 runners, 22%) runs GRAND SANCY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): F O’Brien (7 wins from 24 runners, 29%) runs PAINT THE DREAM LONGEST TRAVELLER: LONGHOUSE SALE trained by D Skelton, Alcester, 62 miles. RACE SUMMARY LONGHOUSE SALE has made an excellent start to his chasing career, winning each of his 3 starts in this sphere, barely touching a twig in the process. His sound jumping will stand him in good stead round here and he is an appealing alternative to probable market leaders Fiddlerontheroof and Fusil Raffles. Grand Sancy is also respected in what is likely to be a very informative contest. 1-2-3: 1.LONGHOUSE SALE (IRE) 2.FIDDLERONTHEROOF (IRE) 3.FUSIL RAFFLES (FR) KEY colours

THE SILVER TROPHY THE Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle (GRADE 3) The Chepstow Contract Rentals 10 Year Anniversary Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle is one of the first major jump handicaps of the season. The Grade 3 contest, run over 2 miles and four furlongs, has featured many stars throughout the years. Probably the best known winner of the Silver Trophy is the JP McManus owned Don’t Push It who won the race in 2007 trained by Jonjo O’Neill and ridden by Noel Fehily. Don’t Push It went on to become the heroic winner of the 2010 Grand National, giving AP McCoy his famous win in the race. Another incredibly talented horse to win the Silver Trophy in 2006 was the Paul Nicholls trained Taranis, ridden by Ruby Walsh. Taranis went on to win the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2007. Other popular winners have included Lacdoudal and Mr Thriller. Flash the Steel (pictured) put in his best run to date here last year when flashing home by 2 lengths to give Dan and Harry Skelton their second success in this race. The 8-year-old has scored 3 out of his 9 times attempts over hurdles now and will need to bounce back this season. RACE SUMMARY Many possibilities in a typically competitive renewal of this Grade 3 handicap. MARIO DE PAIL looked promising prior to finding the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle too much at Cheltenham when last seen in March and, with improvement likely now pitched into a handicap, he could be the answer. Lightly Squeeze should be spot-on following a spin on the Flat and is feared, along with Tea Clipper and Fix Sun. 1-2-3: 1.MARIO DE PAIL (FR) 2.LIGHTLY SQUEEZE 3.TEA CLIPPER (IRE) KEY colours
