CHAIR’S WELCOME WELCOME TO DAY THREE OF THE 2022 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL - CHESTER CUP DAY Good afternoon, Welcome to the final day of the iconic Boodles May Festival – the TOTE Chester Cup Day. Today we make the most of the remainder of this much-loved festival of race meetings here at the world’s oldest racecourse. Today’s card of 7 races begins at 1:30pm with The ICM Stellar Sports Earl Grosvenor Handicap Stakes. Later in the afternoon, The tote+ Chester Cup will have all eyes on the track as the winner takes home a prize of £151,000. Finally, the 2022 Boodles May Festival will draw to a close at 4:55pm with The tote+ Chester Plate, in memory of Bobby McAlpine who was Chester Race Company Chairman for many years. I’d like to extend thanks to today’s sponsors. Our title sponsor, Boodles, who have been a treasured partner of Chester Racecourse for many years. Today’s official partner, the TOTE, who are represented across the site today with their gaming services. ICM Stellar Sports, who manage some of the biggest names in global sport. Irish Thoroughbred Marketing who are well-known throughout the horseracing industry. Finally, White Oak, whose lending solutions have made it a global brand. Your support is greatly appreciated by all of us here at Chester Racecourse. We next race here on Saturday 28th May as our much-loved Roman Day returns to the Roodee. This is the race day we use to celebrate our origins as the world’s oldest racecourse, as well as our roots in the ancient city of Chester. The day will bring together a range of partners in the city, so I hope you’ll visit us again then for an exciting day out.

PL ACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH
AND RACECOURSE BOOKMAKERS
HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible. 1

RACE 2
RACE 1
TODAY’S TOP TIPS It was this time last year that C&D winner BOARDMAN went on a winning streak and he arrives here in a similar vein of form this time around, with conditions to suit and the services of Jim Crowley to call upon. Boosala looks to be the class act of the field but has a tough task off top weight, whereas, at the other end of the handicap, Repertoire is 5lb well-in under a penalty following an emphatic success at Ascot. WIN: BOARDMAN DANGER: BOOSALA All eyes will be on the talented Mujtaba as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing effort when favourite for the Lincoln. Preference instead is for course specialist BARYSHNIKOV, who won at this meeting last year and looked on good terms with himself when a taking winner at Pontefract on his return last month. Cap Francais did it well in a valuable handicap at Newmarket on Saturday and there could be more come from him, as well as Ripon scorer Skycutter.
RACE 3
WIN: BARYSHNIKOV
It took a while for the admirable SOLID STONE to find his way in group company but he did so towards the end of last season with authoritative wins at Windsor and Newbury. The six-year-old has won fresh before and he is taken to overturn form with Megallan, with whom he is 7lb better off for just over a length defeat at Salisbury last August. Al Aasy is a classy operator at this level but may need further to be seen at his best.
RACE 4
WIN: SOLID STONE
DANGER: MEGALLAN
Falcon Eight produced a classy display when landing this race under Frankie Dettori last year and, off a 5lb higher mark, warrants the utmost respect. However, SOLENT GATEWAY looked unlucky when third at Epsom on his debut for Hugo Palmer last month and the unexposed stayer is narrowly preferred. Arcadian Sunrise still has the scope to progress on the Flat and cannot be ruled out, while Ballydoyle contender Cleveland is a fascinating runner on his handicap bow and may also figure. WIN: SOLENT GATEWAY
RACE 5
DANGER: CAP FRANCAIS
DANGER: FALCON EIGHT
Twice a winner in Listed company last season, KING’S LYNN has landed a plum draw on his return to action and can improve on his second-placed finish in this race a year ago. Flaming Rib is the sole three-year-old in the field and should benefit from the return to sprinting, while Blue De Vega overcame trouble in running when scoring in handicap company at Newbury last month and cannot be discounted either.
RACE 6
DANGER: FLAMING RIB
Iconique ran well for third at Windsor on her return to action and could go well for her inexperienced rider, but the idiosyncracies of Chester may be better navigated by Connor Murtagh aboard BAMBOO BAY. The former Joseph O’Brien inmate was beaten when returning from a break on the level at Catterick last month. He could be better for that outing and Philip Kirby’s charge is taken to strike. Kihavah has claims on his Beverley second, while Scampi is respected too.
RACE 7
WIN: KING’S LYNN
AURIFEROUS certainly wasn’t stopping when finishing second in a decent handicap at Newbury last time and could prove the answer in this off the same mark. Andrew Balding’s charge is preferred over Haveyoumissedme, who won his fair share last season and returned with a decent third at Wolverhampton last month. Chase The Dollar has been in excellent form on the allweather of late, while Call My Bluff is a course winner who has stamina in abundance.
WIN: BAMBOO BAY
WIN: AURIFEROUS
DANGER: ICONIQUE
DANGER: HAVEYOUMISSEDME

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS The concluding day of the 2021 Boodles May Festival saw a series of star performances. The Andrew Balding-trained Grove Ferry took advantage of the drying ground and his powerful finishing kick to run out a ready winner of the opener under David Probert. A slow start didn’t deter Grove Ferry, who was well backed before the off and managed to reel in the front-running Dulas and Silvestre De Sousa. The Group 2 Huxley Stakes saw another smart performance from an Irish raider, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Armory taking the classy contest under a fine ride by Ryan Moore. Armory delivered on the promise of his three-year-old season and overcame the smart Sangarius to make the Chester plunder all the more satisfying for the master of Ballydoyle.

Falcon Eight
The feature race of the meeting, the Chester Cup, went to another Irish raider. Dermot Weld’s Falcon Eight, in the famous colours of Moyglare Stud, was dominant in victory over the marathon trip under Frankie Dettori.
to deny Andrew Balding a winner. Held up from stall 9, Dark Pine was galvanized by the trip to Chester and came home in front in a competitive looking handicap.
Despite being slowly away, carrying a big weight and having to go wide, Falcon Eight bolted up in the feature contest, winning by two lengths over The Grand Visir back in second, Hochfeld in third and Alan King’s Coeur De Lion back in fourth.
The consolation race for the Chester Cup, the Chester Plate, went to the talented Green Book, who was given a perfect ride by Franny Norton from stall 2 to make all in a valuable contest. Ridden for more a furlong from the finish, Green Book relished the ground and saw off the talented Postileo and Hydroplane to give Venetia Williams a winner on the week.
Jason Hart gave El Astronaute the perfect Chester ride to win the five furlongs conditions stakes, making every yard a winning one from a quick start and holding off the late challenge of Her Majesty The Queen’s King’s Lynn under Ryan Moore for Andrew Balding.
The final race of the meeting went to the well-backed Potenza, who cruised clear under Theo Ladd to win for Harry Eustace, beating Carlos Felix and Red Derek back in second and third respectively in what was a fine end to a superb week of racing.
A competitive mile and a quarter handicap went to Dark Pine in a tight finish, with David Loughnane’s charge delivered to perfection under Laura Pearson to grab victory on the line from Fox Tal and Silvestre De Sousa 11

Are you in?
Win Without Backing a Winner! The Tote Placepot is often described at the UK’s most enjoyable racing pool bet, the first bet of the day and a renowned raceday ritual; you simply pick a horse to place in each of the first 6 races of a meeting. With an average placepot pay out of £300 to a £1 stake at the Chester May Festival in the last five years the Placepot is the ultimate bet for small stakes, big possibilities.
How to play the Placepot like a pro Try perming your placepot “Perming” your placepot simply means choosing more than one horse in each race. Whilst this increases your stake it also increases your chance of winning. You only need one of them to make the places in each race to win the placepot, but you can also win multiple times in the same bet if you manage to get more than one placed in any of the races.
Banker Legs The attraction of the Placepot to most bettors is the “small stake, big win” possibility and they therefore want to keep the number of selections per race and total stake to a reasonable amount. Picking just one horse in a race (leg) allows you to keep your total lines down and potentially use more selections in another more competitive leg. Look to find a race where there is a horse you simply can’t see finishing outside the places.
Target Vulnerable Favourites On the other hand, leaving out vulnerable favourites is the key to unlocking the big dividends the Placepot has to offer. The more favourites fail to place, the bigger the dividend is going to be. This is because the biggest share of the money in each race will be riding on the favourite.
Where to play? The best option is to play the Placepot with Tote, the home of the Placepot. Tote.co.uk are giving ALL CHESTER CUSTOMERS A FREE PLACEPOT EVERY DAY OF THE MAY FESTIVAL. PLUS when playing directly at Tote.co.uk or via the Placepot app you will receive a 10% boost on your winnings thanks to Tote+.

RACE DESCRIPTON
1
This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. colours

However, the vote goes to REPERTOIRE, who returned to the sort of form he showed in France in his younger days when bolting up at Ascot 9 days ago and, unpenalised for that success, he still looks well-in despite being 5lb out of the weights. 3-time course winner Revich has plenty in his favour so he’s put forward as the main threat, ahead of Boardman and Fools Rush In.

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. colours

NAMED after a small village nine miles south-east of Chester racecourse, the Huxley Stakes is the highest-quality race staged during the three-day Boodles May Festival. It is a Group 2 boasting a total prize fund of nearly £140,000, meaning it ranks behind only the tote+ Chester Cup in terms of its monetary value. The inaugural edition in 1999 was won, somewhat ironically, by a horse called Chester House. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Kieren Fallon, he won Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard Stakes on his next start. But it was after Chester House was switched to renowned American trainer Bobby Frankel that he enjoyed his most significant success, in the Arlington Million in Chicago in 2000, on what would prove to be a glorious swansong to his career. A decade later, the John Gosden-trained Debussy went one better than Chester House by winning the Huxley Stakes and the Arlington Million in the same season.

Chester was a course which brought out the best in Debussy. In two other visits here, he finished third to Golden Sword in the 2009 Chester Vase, as well as notching the last of his six career wins in the Stand Cup, a Listed race, in September 2011. Only two horses have won this race on multiple occasions. Maraahel secured consecutive victories in 2007, 2008 and 2009, making him the single most successful horse to have run in the Huxley Stakes and contributing three of Stoute’s record of six wins as a trainer. Forest Ranger is the only other horse to grab the glory more than once, coming home in front in 2018 and 2019 for Malton trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Tony Hamilton. However, perhaps the Huxley Stakes’ most distinguished graduate is Noble Mission. Or at least he should be. The winner in 2014 for Sir Henry Cecil’s widow Lady Cecil, Noble Mission was all too often remembered for being the
year-younger brother of the equine phenomenon that was Frankel, rather than for his own achievements on the track.
Previous Winners
Undeniably a late-bloomer, Noble Mission’s final year was his breakthrough one at the top level. After inflicting another defeat on old rival Telescope here in the Huxley Stakes, Noble Mission notched a belated first Grade 1 victory less than three weeks later in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in Ireland.

L AST Y E A R ’ S H U X LE Y S T A K ES A small but select field went to post for the Group 2 Huxley Stakes of 2021, and a fine field had assembled. Bharani Star was a late non-runner due to the unsuitable ground conditions. Favourite for the contest was the Aidan O’Brien-trained Armory, who brought the best rating and best form into the mile and a quarter contest. A talented juvenile and three-year-old who had placed fourth in an Irish 2,000 Guineas and ended his three-year-old season with a superb second in a competitive Group 1 down under at Moonee Valley, he reappeared at Chester in calmer waters and found a fine opportunity to open his season with a bang. Bangkok brought a good level of form into the race having been kept busy over the winter and won a competitive race on All-Weather Finals Day, but he faced a tough task on ratings and the biggest challenge to Armory looked to come from the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sangarius. A Listed winner on the all-weather on his
previous start, the Juddmonte homebred has a superb pedigree and filled the mould of a typical improver from the yard with plenty to come. Palavecino may have been the outsider in the betting but was no back marker and a danger if getting an easy lead. Palavecino did indeed make the running, taking it up after a furlong from Sangarius, who was all too happy to relinquish control of the race to his rival. Winding it up a furlong out, Martin Dwyer soon found Palavecino back peddling, but some traffic problems in behind saw Bangkok and Sangarius both be knocked off balance, with the former dropping back quickly and filling the final spot. Armory was able to travel sweetly into the race and kept on strongly, winning the race with a clean move a furlong from the finish and extending away from his rivals in the style of a good horse. Sangarius went out in pursuit but was always left toiling, with Richard Kingscote having to settle for second place. 33

RACE DESCRIPTON This one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 2 contest and will attract some high-class middle distance performers. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb, although penalties are then awarded to horses that have already won above a certain level - 3lb for a Group 2 victory or 5lb for a Group 1 success. colours

Frankie Dettori guided home the Dermot Weld-trained Falcon Eight to victory in the two miles and two furlongs contest in the famous colours of Moyglare Stud, sealing a remarkable success off a massive weight.
Nevertheless, his class told. Travelling well on the outer, Dettori asked his mount for more two furlongs from the finish, but the Ian Wiliams-trained The Grand Visir and a few others had stolen the first run and were in the driving seat.
Drawn in stall 10, Falcon Eight didn’t get away from the stalls quickly and has soon enough sacrificed his chance of any prominent position in the race. Held out wide on the course, he

After winning the Chester Cup, Falcon Eight was only seen one more time on the Flat that season, with a poor showing at Acot at 7/4F. CHESTER RACE COMPANY PRESIDENT
BOBBY MCALPINE 6 May 1932 – 25 June 2021
Bobby McAlpine was an affable chairman who remained at the heart of Chester Race Company for 30 years. McAlpine’s history at Chester began with him taking a position on the board in 1984 and serving as chairman from 1988 to 2008. Bobby was a much-loved and much-respected member of the Chester Race Company board, with him serving as Honorary President until the time of his passing last year. He was instrumental in bringing Chester Race Company to where it is today, with the foresight to appoint a permanent Chief Executive to oversee the expansion and day-to-day running of the operation. It was just after that he assisted with the decision to purchase Bangor-on-Dee racecourse, thus bringing flat and jump racing together in the area. A long-standing member of the Jockey Club, he also served as director of Aintree Racecourse, and stewarded at Wolverhampton,
Bangor-On-Dee, Chester, Haydock, Aintree and Newmarket. His interest in racing had been fired as a boy when his uncle told him about winning the Grand National in 1921 with his horse Shaun Spadah. He was still in his twenties when he agreed to buy a four-year-old gelding from Ireland called Marnrack, which was enough to get him hooked. Racing success followed for McAlpine, with nota-ble wins in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1970, beating the Derby winner Blakeney. A reputable breeder, he bred winners in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, Ben-son & Hedges Cup at York and, most notably, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1986 with odds of 40-1. Bobby was one of the great characters in the racing community and he will be sorely missed.

Boodles is that rarest of creatures: a brand with centuries of brilliant craft heritage, while at the same time always fresh as spring blossom. Quintessentially British, it is one of the only remaining familyowned jewellers on London’s Bond Street, staying timeless and yet contemporary. Founded in 1798, Boodles is known for the quality of its precious gemstones and the skill of its creations. Thanks to an inspirational team of in-house designers, the company’s visionary philosophy continues to champion exemplary British craftsmanship. Brothers Nicholas and Michael Wainwright lead the company
This year brings many exciting new developments for the brand. March saw Boodles come onboard as the lead sponsor for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and in May the second Boodles Garden will appear at the Chelsea Flower Show. In June Boodles will be a Pageant partner for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a momentous and historic event for the entire country. Boodles high jewellery collection for the year, entitled Peace of Mined, sources diamonds directly from the world-famous Cullinan Mine, the same mine that produced two of the crown jewels’ most important diamonds. The perfect way to mark the occasion. There’s an effortless sense of grace, discretion and fun about Boodles. Fans of Boodles say you simply won’t find it elsewhere. RACE DESCRIPTON This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race. colours

THE Chester Plate is a valuable consolation race for horses targeted at the Chester Cup, but which don’t make the final field.
finishing second in the Grade 2 Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham and then running a creditable race at the Festival. He was challenged hard inside the final furlong here at Chester by Coeur De Lion, but hung on grimly to win for his Scottish-born jockey Jason Hart and dual-purpose Yorkshire-based handler John Quinn.
When the Plate was staged for the first time in 2018, the Chester Cup joined a select band of historic and popular Flat handicaps to be awarded a consolation race. The others are the Ayr Gold Cup, the Bunbury Cup and Cambridgeshire (both at Newmarket), the Stewards’ Cup (at Goodwood), the Lincoln (at Doncaster) and the Northumberland Plate (at Newcastle).
Coeur De Lion, himself a talented hurdler, would get his moment of glory in 2019 as he went one place better. Trained by Alan King, a jumps trainer to trade but who has made a niche for himself as a plunderer of major staying races on the Flat, Coeur Du Lion romped to a wide-margin win over 2014 Chester Cup hero Suegioo.
Like its big brother, the Chester Plate has also proved a happy hunting ground for horses with plenty of hurdling experience. The inaugural winner Look My Way had enjoyed a productive few months over hurdles in the months before his Plate victory, winning at Ludlow,

PLAY SMARTER
A low-mileage winner on the Flat, BELLATRIXSA has progressed into a useful mare over hurdles, adding a fourth win in that discipline to her tally at Hereford in February. A good second at Chepstow in March, she’s very interesting from this mark back on the level for the trainer/jockey combination that landed this with Green Book 12 months ago. Auriferous and Call My Bluff rate next best, ahead of Haveyoumissedme.
