A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR - SATURDAY 16 JULY 2022

Good Afternoon, Welcome to the Budweiser Midsummer Meeting here at Chester Racecourse. We are now over halfway through the racing season here at the world’s oldest racecourse and enjoying the best the British summer has to offer.

Today’s racecard features 7 races. First, we have The Budweiser King of Beers Restricted Novice Stakes taking place at 1:59pm. Later at 3:41pm, all eyes will be on the track as The Free Placepot every Saturday at Tote.co.uk Apprentice Handicap Stakes offers a prize fund of £101,000 to the Class 2 horses competing. Finally, the day will draw to a close at 5:30pm with The Magners Cider Handicap Stakes (Class 5, 4yo+). I’d like to extend our thanks today to our title sponsor, Budweiser. Budweiser Brewing Group are a powerhouse of the UK’s drinks industry. Employing 1000 people in breweries in South Wales, Lancashire and North London as well as their head office in Central London, Budweiser’s impact can be felt across the UK. Additionally, as a founding member of the Portman Group, member of the British Beer and Pub Association and British Beer Alliance and supporter of the Drinkaware Trust, Budweiser are champions of Britain’s beer culture. I’d also like to extend our thanks to today’s other sponsor TOTE who have taken sponsorship of our most exciting race today at 3:41pm. Everyone at Chester Racecourse is grateful for your support. Our next race day is Family Fun Day on Sunday 31st July. One of our most popular fixtures each year, Family Fun Day will see a host of free activities take place on the Open Course, offering a great value day out for families to make memories which will last a lifetime. I hope you’ll join us then.

Ian O’Doherty Chair

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Self Praise is getting pretty expensive to follow, having finished second on his last four starts, and a wide draw in stall nine won’t make life easy. It might be worth taking him on with BROTHER SEBASTIAN, who showed some ability on debut at Thirsk in May when a running-on fourth despite being outpaced early and could have more to offer today. Qaiser is another worth keeping a close eye on in the market for his in-form yard.

RACE 2

WIN: BROTHER SEBASTIAN

Despite finishing last of six at Chelmsford last time, the lightly-raced CYGNETURE wasn’t beaten far and she can go close here off a 2lb lower mark. Ralph Beckett’s filly has landed the plum draw in stall one and if getting away well, she could take all the beating. Rock Melody might be the main danger if bouncing back from a disappointing run at Newmarket last time, while Queen Of Burgundy is another who can’t be discounted back up in trip.

RACE 3

WIN: CYGNETURE

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: MANACCAN

ENFRANCHISE has been running consistently well recently and ran another good race at Haydock a fortnight ago when second in the Old Newton Cup. She still looks to be improving so her 2lb higher mark may not be enough to stop her from getting involved. Cockalorum showed up well for a long way last week at York and, dropped 2lb, is another who can run well, while Haseefah can’t be ruled out in her current form either. WIN: ENFRANCHISE

DANGER: COCKALORUM

El Habeeb wasn’t totally disgraced last time in the Derby at Epsom despite going off at 250/1. He’s likely to find these calmer waters much more to his liking, but preference is for the Roger Varian-trained AIMERIC, who should improve for this step up in trip after a good run in a hot maiden at Newmarket over 1m2f last time. Luttrell Lad didn’t get the easiest passage last time when fourth at Doncaster and can finish best of the rest. WIN: AIMERIC

RACE 6

DANGER: ROCK MELODY

An extremely open contest in which KING OF STARS could be difficult to peg back if continuing in form after a good second at Sandown a fortnight ago. He’s now only 1lb higher than for his last win in September and is well drawn to attack from stall three. Manaccan can also get involved from a good draw after a respectable fifth in a big handicap at Royal Ascot, while Live In The Dream is another for the shortlist. WIN: KING OF STARS

DANGER: EL HABEEB

After pulling hard when upped to 1m4f at Royal Ascot last time, coming back down in trip looks the right move for POST IMPRESSIONIST, who should be hard to beat here. He finished second to a subsequent Group 2 winner at Newcastle in May and on that performance, he could take all the beating off a mark of 89. Sheer Rocks looks worth another go at the trip, while Chairman needs to bounce back after a slightly disappointing run at Sandown last time out. WIN: POST IMPRESSIONIST

RACE 7

DANGER: SELF PRAISE

DANGER: SHEER ROCKS

Following his victory here last week, THE NEW MARWAN can go in again here off just a 3lb higher mark. He won well despite being drawn widest of all, so could take all the beating from his more generous draw in stall one. The biggest danger could be James Fanshawe’s filly Greek Flame after a short break, while Golden Melody is sliding back down the weights and has won here before, so is another who can get involved. WIN: THE NEW MARWAN

DANGER: GREEK FLAME

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

2021: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR

Stewards Note: SELF PRAISE: Following its run on 30/6/2022 it was reported that the horse was short for room. BROTHER SEBASTIAN: Following its run on 31/5/2022 it was reported that the horse hung left handed.

PLAY SMARTER

SELF PRAISE has a tricky draw to overcome, but he’s the clear form pick, and had an excuse at Epsom last time, so he’s definitely the most likely winner. Brother Sebastian shaped well on debut at Thirsk nearly 7 weeks ago and looks a viable alternative. Storm Venture might be the best of the newcomers.

As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130 Br Breeding

To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Typically-competitive fare with the vote in favour of 3-y-o NAVELLO. A winner over C&D on his penultimate start, he wasn’t so well served by his position on the far wing when sixth in a 12-runner Newmarket handicap since and a better showing can be expected from his handy draw in 2. Shamlaan and Manaccan are others to consider along with Live In The Dream, whilst Count d’Orsay makes each-way appeal from the older brigade.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

MARIA BRANWELL’s third in the Queen Mary is the best piece of form on show and further improvement can’t be ruled out from this likeable filly, so she gets the marginal vote ahead of Rogue Spirit, whose penultimate outing (when second at Beverley) is proving to be very strong form. Miami Girl deserves plenty of respect as the pick of the Richard Hannontrained contingent.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

The fitting of a hood meant that STAR CALIBER was able to conserve his energy much better on his final couple of starts at 3, and having produced a career-best at York when last seen 9 months ago, Andrew Balding’s front-runner could prove tough to peg back with the well-touted Harry Davies on board. Are you in?

Win Without Backing a Winner! The Tote Placepot is often described as the UK’s most enjoyable racing pool bet, the first bet of the day and a renowned raceday ritual; you simply pick a horse to place in each of the first 6 races of a meeting. With an average pay out of £474 to a £1 stake at Tote.co.uk in 2021 the Placepot is the ultimate bet for small stakes, big possibilities.

How to play the Placepot like a pro Try perming your placepot “Perming” your placepot simply means choosing more than one horse in each race. Whilst this increases your stake it also increases your chance of winning. You only need one of them to make the places in each race to win the placepot, but you can also win multiple times in the same bet if you manage to get more than one placed in any of the races.

Banker Legs The attraction of the Placepot to most bettors is the “small stake, big win” possibility and they therefore want to keep the number of selections per race and total stake to a reasonable amount. Picking just one horse in a race (leg) allows you to keep your total lines down and potentially use more selections in another more competitive leg. Look to find a race where there is a horse you simply can’t see finishing outside the places.

Target Vulnerable Favourites On the other hand, leaving out vulnerable favourites is the key to unlocking the big dividends the Placepot has to offer. The more favourites fail to place, the bigger the dividend is going to be. This is because the biggest share of the money in each race will be riding on the favourite.

Where to play? The best option is to play the Placepot with Tote, the home of the Placepot. When playing directly at Tote.co.uk or via the app you will receive a 10% boost on your winnings thanks to Tote+. Use the QR code to open your Tote.co.uk account today.

(Penalty Value £9534.90) RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile and four furlongs contest for those aged three-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

THE CAMDEN HELLS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

1m 2f 70y

for three yrs old Total race value £26122 Owners Prize Money. 1st £10158, 2nd £5080, 3rd £2540, 4th £1270, 5th £635, 6th £416. (Penalty Value £12885) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

for four yrs old and upwards Total race value £10000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3414, 2nd £1706, 3rd £854, 4th £426, 5th £400, 6th £400, 7th £400, 8th £400. (Penalty Value £4320) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PLAY SMARTER

The vote goes to ANGELS LANDING, who wasn’t seen to best effect when third to The New Marwan over this C&D last weekend and, with Harry Davies’ claim taken into account, she effectively meets that rival on 7lb better terms this time. The latter is likely to give it another good shot from the front nonetheless, but Precision Storm belatedly proved that he can mix it on turf when going close at Bath last time and he is feared most.
