Cornbury House Horse Trials - 11th-15th September 2024
Wednesday 11 - Sunday 15 September 2024
It’s amazing to think this year will be the fifth edition of Cornbury House Horse Trials. And 2024’s competition promises to the best yet. It’s a true festival of sport involving some of equestrian’s hottest names – including Team GB Paris Olympics gold medallists – alongside some of the finest up-and-coming young talent in the land. It’s particularly pleasing to see numbers for the British Eventing Young Horse Championships as well as The Howden Way Youth classes going up and up We’re also delighted to welcome back the pony class, supported by Project Pony
As ever, we’ve worked overtime to preserve the best competition conditions. Work has been done in the parklands to enable the best possible surface for our horses. Following consultation after last year’s event, we’ve decided to run fewer horses to preserve the all-important footing for horses over all four days of competition. Sadly, that means running one section less per day on Thursday and Friday. But we still have 24 nations competing and nearly 1100 entries this year It also means our horses and riders will have the best possible opportunity to perform at their optimum. I can tell you the site and ground look fantastic.
Cornbury House Horse Trials has always been about more than just world class eventing. We always wanted to make this a true feast of the senses. Phil Winser’s The Bull, Charlbury is back once more and will again be cooking up a storm. You’ll be able to taste fantastically locally sourced food, From the Farm, including offerings from the Cornbury estate and our neighbouring farms. This year we’re unveiling the Cornbury Village - a curated selection of hand-picked bespoke, independent brands.
Meanwhile, we have the Endless Lunch at Cornbury by Mirabeau bringing the finest rose’s from the vineyards of Provence. We have Pragnell jewellers, Clarence Court eggs, Volare, Markel, Fortnum and Mason all sprinkling late summer sparkle. And if you make it all the way up the hill, you’ll even be able to quench your thirst in the Pol Roger Lodge at the Pragnell water complex. It’s not only the adults who’ll be enjoying themselves. There’s fun for the whole family The ‘Wildings’ presents immersive kid’s activities for children and families in a dedicated space. And they’ll be evening entertainment from our DJs – creating a relaxed ‘festival vibe’ set against the glorious backdrop of Cornbury Park and the ancient Wychwood Forest
For five years CHHT has been a real labour of love not just for me but my whole family But it wouldn’t be possible without an enormous team of generous sponsors, volunteers, officials, contractors and event specialists. I want to thank them all. When we began in 2020 we weren’t too sure if the trials would take off But after watching the first horse go clear, I knew we’d be going places. So enjoy the next five days. It’s an event you’ll never forget.

What a way for the equestrian events of the Paris 2024 Olympics to start - with the British eventing team clinching the gold medal and following up the Tokyo Olympics victory to give our country back-to-back golds.
Britain may be the home of eventing, but its exceptional strength in depth in terms of riders and horsepower means that it is very hard indeed to be selected to compete for Team GB. Given that there are just three slots - and one “alternate” who may be called up if needed - there are always bound to be some exceptional combinations left at home who would have easily found a spot on another nation’s team.
The pressure was immense, therefore, on Laura Collett, Tom McEwen and Ros Canter, and alternate rider Yasmin Ingham: Britain’s eventing squad in Paris. Laura and Tom were both part of that gold medal-winning team three years ago in Tokyo, and Ros, the alternate rider on that occasion, was equally hungry to step on to the podium this time
They did it magnificently Britain led throughout and deservedly won gold, with Laura also taking individual bronze on her exceptional partner, London 52 France took team silver, with Japan in bronze medal position.
We are thrilled to welcome Laura, Tom, Ros and Yasmin to Cornbury 2024, along with many other Olympians from other countries.

THE HOWDEN WAY
The Howden Way was launched in May 2022 following a generous investment from David Howden, CEO and Founder of Howden and President of the Cornbury House Horse Trials. The programme consists of four key areas: The Howden Way Regional Academies, The Howden Way Talent Pathway, The Young Horse Academy and The Howden Way Young Horse Leagues. The Howden Way Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme was launched last year with the full details to be released this December
YOUNG HORSES
The Howden Way Young Horse Academy, identifies quality young horses that don’t receive support from other talent programmes. 6 and 7 year-old horses are recruited through Young Horse Development Days Age group classes have been introduced for 6 and 7 year-olds, with the 6 year-olds at Novice level and the 7 year-olds at Intermediate level, providing an opportunity for riders and owners to compete against horses of the same age. These classes also offer additional prize money. The programme also includes The Howden Way Young Horse Leagues for horses aged 5, 6, and 7, as well as a combined 8 and 9 year-old league
SUPPORTING TALENT
The Howden Way Talent Pathway helps to support young riders as they transition through British Eventing’s age groups, including those moving into senior levels. The aim is for the pathway to encourage riders to stay engaged with the sport, be independent, confident and well-educated. Riders don’t need to apply but are identified once they have met the performance criteria for the talent pathway
REGIONAL ACADEMIES
The Howden Way Regional Academies provide training for all levels across the UK. The academies aim to standardise delivery, ensuring that everyone receives the same training regardless of location. Participants of any age and ability, including non-BE members, can attend. The training is continuously shaped by rider feedback, with a focus on skills and knowledge development. The Regional Academies aim to make each step more inclusive, empowering riders to enter competitions feeling prepared and confident.
THOROUGHBRED AFTERCARE PROGRAMME (TAP)
TAP aims to provide everything riders need to know when taking on an ex-racehorse. It will provide step by step information from the moment a racehorse leaves a racing yard and how to best transition ex-racehorses into their new ridden horse career The programme will have a range of content areas including how best to understand an ex-racehorse along with top tips from industry experts including vets, trainers and an array of elite Event riders, on everything from their daily routine through to the re-schooling process.
The programme will also provide regional subsidised training opportunities throughout the year for all ex-racehorses, delivered by qualified coaches specifically designed to support ex-racehorses into their new ridden career whether that be as a pleasure horse or for those aiming to compete at Cornbury in years to come

Event Health and Safety Policy
General
1. The Horse Trials organiser, named in the programme, has overall responsibility for health and safety and appoints a Health and Safety Adviser, Claire Rumney, to ensure that all the appropriate Health and Safety legislation is complied with.
2. The Horse Trials Organiser, named in the programme undertakes to run the competition in accordance with the British Eventing rules and guidance.
3. The Horse Trials Organiser is required to ensure all Chief Stewards appointed by the Organiser have received, read and understood the relevant section of the guidance to ensure they are aware of the requirements and standards for their area of responsibility.
4. The Health and Safety Adviser (primarily) and the Organiser are required to ensure the area of competition and those accessible to the public and other Officials are (so far as is reasonably practicable) subject to a risk assessment and that this, and a record of the actions taken, is documented in the events Health and Safety Plan.
Officials
1. Stewards, judges and officials are briefed in their duties and provided with the relevant equipment to carry out their duties.
2. They are required to bring to the attention of the Health and Safety Adviser any concerns they have for the Health, Safety and Welfare of the public and the officials.
2. They are required to conduct themselves in such a manner not to put their self or anyone else at risk and maintain control of the area around their location.
4. The BE Technical Advisor, BE Steward or Health and Safety Adviser are required to ensure the Officials are properly briefed in their duties and area properly equipped.
Spectators
All reasonable and practical steps are taken to ensure the health, safety and welfare of those attending the event. Spectators are to follow signage, stringing and to follow designated routes and to use the designated crossing points so as not to inadvertently stray into the path of oncoming horses. They should listen for the fence judges whistle blasts warning of horses on the crosscountry course and the public address announcements.
Contractors
All contractors working at the Event are required to observe best working practice, comply with all legislation relevant to their business and take all reasonable and practical steps to safeguard their employees and those attending.
Exhibitors
All exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their own stands and the risks that they may pose to other persons within the allocated space or immediate surrounding areas. This is subject to monitoring by the Health and Safety Steward and Organiser
Emergencies
The emergency services at the event include the doctors, ambulances, vet and fence repair personnel. They have access to all parts of the site and can be quickly contacted through any steward, judge or official – most immediately through their radio. Accidents involving horses and competitors are well catered for and the appropriate officials are constantly ready to report these as they occur and to call for appropriate emergency services. 15. Emergencies not connected with the competition may be dealt with by the emergency services (eg the fire brigade). Telephones for such emergency calls are located at the information point at the log cabin.
Disclaimer of Liability
Except for the negligence of the Organiser and his or their agents or others for whom in law they are responsible, the Organiser does not accept responsibility in respect of any accident, illness or disease caused to or suffered by any horse, owner, competitor, spectator, sponsor and others present at the site of the Event and their property and accoutrements.
Reservation of right
The Organiser has the power to:
i. Cancel or divide any class or transfer competitors between sections of a class
ii. Alter the advertised times
iii. Refuse any entry
Health and Safety
The Organiser of this Event has taken responsible precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone present. For these measures to be effective, everyone must themselves take all reasonable precautions to prevent accidents and must comply with any instructions given by the Organiser, Officials and Stewards. Organisers require all drivers and all passengers on motorcycles and ATV’s to wear a suitable head protector and must not allow passengers to be carried on such vehicles (unless designed or specifically adapted for the purpose). Please remember Cornbury House Horse Trials currently enjoys and relies very heavily on the support and goodwill of the local community and surrounding villages. Please drive carefully through the villages and take all litter home.

Thank you
The organisers of Cornbury House Horse Trials would like to thank all our officials and helpers who have so willingly given their time, often without sufficient thanks and without whom it would be impossible to stage this event.
Thank you as well to our sponsors, contributors, Lord Rotherwick and the Cornbury Park Estate
