WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Curragh for Day 1 of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival. This is one of the great weekends of sport each year and while we are disappointed that we won’t be able to welcome our great supporters in person, we are delighted that they will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. For our opening meeting of the year, we enjoyed excellent TV viewing figures and the engagement on social media channels was higher than ever seen before. We are very pleased that our new digital race card produced by Weatherbys was well received and allowed people get some of the race day experience in their own homes. I would like to thank our race sponsors today - DMG Media, Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital, Irish European Breeders Fund, Hanlon Concrete and TRM who have all been wonderful supporters of the racecourse. Your support at this very challenging time is greatly appreciated. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is the most prestigious race in the Irish racing calendar, the inaugural running was in 1866. It has produced so many great races over the years and so many worthy champions. We hope that this year will be no exception. We are very grateful to Dubai Duty Free for their continued support of the Festival. This is their 19th year in the Curragh, making this one of the longest partnerships in racing. We would like to thank Colm McLoughlin and everybody in Dubai Duty Free for their all their support over the years. We are sorry that they and their guests cannot be with us this weekend and we hope that they enjoy the weekend of wonderful racing. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back soon. We will also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

MERCHANTS QUAY was only beaten a length into second on his racecourse debut here a fortnight ago (Irish Chief sixth) and the winner, Admiral Nelson, was deemed good enough for the Coventry at Royal Ascot last week. That form reads well, and is stronger than Alex D’s third at Naas. He represents an in-form yard, though, and cannot be dismissed with improvement forthcoming. Arctician is the pick of the newcomers and a bold showing wouldn’t be surprising, but Mulgrave is probably one for later in the year.

THE CURRAGH RACECOURSEWOULD TO THANK THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS FOR THEIR SUPPORT DURING THIS DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY FESTIVAL

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Jessie Harrington looks to have a strong hand here with Chasing The Dawn, who placed in three of her four appearances as a two-year-old, and Bearberry, who went close in a competitive Leopardstown maiden earlier this month. She’s Our Queen (fifth) and Aidan O’Brien’s Satin And Silk (seventh) are others from that aforementioned Leopardstown contest to consider. However, the nod goes the way of FEMINISM, who paid the price for trying to race the eventual winner on debut at Naas and possesses plenty of likeable qualities. Jim Bolger’s recent Roscommon third Assurance is also of interest dropping back in trip.

CURRAGH COMMENT AGITARE boasts experience at Group level, having finished third behind Mogul in a Group 2 at Leopardstown on Irish Champions weekend, and ran well enough on his return in a Group 3. The drop back into a maiden may see him get off the mark at the seventh time of asking. Mr Wendell (second) and The Rain King (third) both ran encouragingly on their respective debuts at Naas and the pair are capable of stepping forward from that, while Ming Warrior, second on his return at Gowran, and newcomer Khurshed are others to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT There will likely be plenty of future winners that emerge from this maiden but SHAMIYNA gets the nod tonight. The form of her debut second over 1m2f at Leopardstown is rock solid with the winner going on to finish second in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and dropping in trip shouldn’t bother Dermot Weld’s filly. Oh So True ran well behind the subsequent Group 3-placed Snow on her debut over 1m2f here and she can show up well again, while Thunder Kiss, Theophile and Aunt Bee are other names to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT A wide-open handicap in which it might be worth taking a chance on LOVE BRACELET. Aidan O’Brien’s charge finished sixth behind Albigna in a 6f maiden here on debut, beaten by less than four lengths, and was then pitched into the Queen Mary. She lost her way but now sent handicapping off 75 and stepped up in trip, it would come as no surprise to see her improve, as she is out of an Irish Oaks winner and bred to stay further than the distances she tackled last season. Capel At Dawn, David Garrick and At War are others to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT ORCHID GARDENS was last seen finishing third to the subsequent Group 3 winner Crossfirehurricane in a Listed race at Dundalk in February. That performance was not a fluke, having been a similar distance behind the same rival on her previous start, and an opening mark of 80 appears to be very fair. Salsa struggled in a Group 3 last time but it is far too soon to be writing her off, while Auxilia is another who could bounce back this evening. Others to note are Faire Croire, Lynn Britt Cabin and St Clerans.

THE EXTRA.IE APPR Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Weekend is all about looking to the future, and in times like these is there a more reassuring activity? The future equine stars grace the track in tomorrow’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, but today is about the remarkable young apprentices who take to the track in the Extra. ie Apprentice Derby. A hotly contested event, we’ve seen some promising riders land this event in recent years. Gavin Ryan made it back-to-back wins in the race when coming home in front last year aboard the Jim Bolger-trained Trossachs, repeating the feat of a year earlier when winning the race aboard Dawn Hoofer. Had it not been for Danny Gavin Ryan and Trossachs Sheehy’s win in 2017 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, Gavin Ryan would’ve landed this race for three consecutive years as he finished a gallant second that day. Joseph O’Brien supplied his sister Ana with victory in the 2016 renewal with Arya Tara, with the winning owner none other than their mother in what was a true family affair.

Padraig Beggy

The Murtagh family paved the way for familial success in this race,as Johnny saddled Jocular to win under his daughter Caroline in 2015. Ronan Whelan gave News At Six a sublime ride to win the 2014 running for Jim Bolger, with then two pound claimer Marc Monaghan guiding Mourani to success in 2013 for John Oxx.

A certain Mark Enright landed the 2012 running, and other previous winners include Ben Curtis in 2011, Martin Harley in 2010, Shane Foleyin 2009 and a certain Padraig Beggy in 2008. The further back in time you travel the more stories you find. Cathy Gannon landed the race back in 2003, with Fran Berry, Jamie Spencer and Seamie Heffernan winning the 1999, 1997 and 1995 renewals respectively.

RENTICE DERBY This year we see a new group of talented riders emerge and compete in this race. The likes of Ben Coen, Andrew Slattery and Danny Sheehy will be familiar names to those who keep a keen eye on Irish racing. Ben tasted big race success when guiding the Peter Fahey-trained Hamley to victory in the Northfields Handicap in 2018 and has ridden the promising Sunchart in all of his three racecourse starts to date. Ben rides for Richard O’Brien today, partnering Cautious Approach, and he rode the Dermot Weld-trained filly Kastasa to break her maiden at Clonmel, Andrew Slattery a horse that Andrew Slattery knows well. Andrew rode Kastasa in four consecutive victories, culminating in big race successes in the Petingo Handicap at Leopardstown then landing a wide-margin Group 3 success in the Loughbrown Stakes over two miles at the Curragh. Andrew rides the Dermot Weld-trained Maria Christina today. Danny Sheehy is no stranger to success either, with victory in the Bold Lad Handicap aboard Soffia and a recent victory aboard Champers Elysess adding to his CV. Danny gets the leg up on Guinevere for Ray Cody. Scott McCullagh has returned to Ireland following a successful stint riding for Mick Channon in England. He caught a few eyes when riding in the UK, with his stylish way marking him as one to follow. Scott has ridden for Jessica Harrington a few times since the resumption of racing, and he rides Yulong Voice for the stable in today’s race. Gavin Ryan has enjoyed tremendous success in this race, and he has aims to make it three on the trot, partnering the Jarlath Fahey-trained Lyrical Attraction in this contest. Conor McGovern

Conor McGovern is another name likely to be more familiar to fans of British racing. Previously with the David O’Meara stable, Conor rode successfully for a few years in Britain, partnering the consistent Waarif to wins at Ayr and Ripon. Conor rides Causey Arch for Colin McBratney today.

A name to follow for the future is Dylan Browne McMonagle. Dylan rides for a plethora of powerful trainers, including Joseph O’Brien, for whom he rides Tonkinese in this race. He partnered Jumella to victory at Navan at the end of last season and landed the spoils aboard Dark Vader at Dundalk back in March. Still a young rider, he resumes his partnership with Tonkinese today, having ridden him in back-to-back starts at Dundalk in February.

CURRAGH COMMENT SAYO boasts winning form on the level in France and has proved to be an above-average hurdler/ chaser since joining Willie Mullins. Third in the 2018 Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham and an impressive winner of a beginners’ chase at Galway in October last year, he makes plenty of appeal reverting to the Flat in such company. His stable companion Foveros is another interesting contender having competed in Grade 1 races over timber against Envoi Allen, while Tonkinese wasn’t beaten far at Fairyhouse recently and Lyrical Attraction may have more to offer.
