Curragh Racecard 27-06-2020

I am delighted to “welcome you to The Curragh Racecourse where we celebrate our 13th year in association with Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. This year, the racing will of course be run behind closed doors due to COVID-19, and we wish the organisers the very best in staging this historical race meeting under these new circumstances.

Pre Covid-19, Dubai Duty Free had a lot to celebrate! In December 2019, we marked our 36th anniversary and recorded annual sales of US$2.029 billion, cementing our status as one of the largest travel retail operators in the world in terms of turnover. In addition to a remarkable turnover, Dubai Duty Free has continued its investment in the development and expansion of its retail offer both in Dubai International Airport and at Al Maktoum International Airport, with our total retail area now extending over 40,000 square meters. As part of our ongoing promotion of Dubai, we have successfully utilised sports sponsorship to promote the city as a leading business and leisure destination. In addition to being title sponsor of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, the operation regularly flies the flag in the UK for race meetings in April at the historic Newbury Racecourse and at Ascot Racecourse for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in August. As a result of Covid-19, both meetings have unfortunately been cancelled for 2020. Other major sporting events that receive our support include the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and attracts the top WTA and ATP tennis players in the world. In February 2020, the tournament boasted a world class line-up with Romanian national and Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep, claiming the WTA title, while World No. 1 Novak Djokovic earned his fifth Dubai title. I would like to thank The Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board, Horse Racing Ireland and The Curragh Racecourse for staging the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby under these adverse conditions. We look forward to returning to The Curragh, along with spectators, in 2021. Until then, I wish you all a pleasant day of racing and stay safe.

Colm McLoughlin Executive Vice Chairman & CEO Dubai Duty Free

WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Curragh for Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day. This is one of the great days of sport each year and while we are disappointed that we won’t be able to welcome our great supporters in person, we are delighted that they will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. In addition to the excellent extensive coverage by RTE and Racing TV, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby will also be shown on the Dubai Racing Channel, the Green Channel in Japan and Fox Sports in America giving the race the global coverage it deserves. Our new digital race card produced by Weatherbys allows everyone get some of the race day experience in their own homes. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is one of the the most prestigious races in the Irish racing calendar, the inaugural running was in 1866. It has produced so many great races over the years and so many worthy champions. We hope that this year will be no exception. We are very grateful to Dubai Duty Free for their continued support of the Festival. This is their 19th year in the Curragh, making this one of the longest partnerships in racing. We would like to thank Colm McLoughlin and everybody in Dubai Duty Free for their all their support over the years. We are sorry that they and their guests cannot be with us this weekend and we hope that they enjoy the weekend of wonderful racing. I would like to thank our other race sponsors today – GAIN Equine Nutrition who have been excellent partners of the Curragh and we are delighted that they have upgraded their sponsorship by adding today’s GAIN First Flier Stakes to the GAIN Railway Stakes which takes place in three week’s time. I would also like to thank Comer Group International and in particular Luke and Brian Comer, who have added the Vintage Crop Stakes to their series of leading races for staying horses which culminates with the Comer Group International Irish St Leger in September. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Irish European Breeders Fund. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back soon. We will also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT DAYLIGHT COME was only beaten by half a length on his debut when finishing third over 7f at Naas last September. That form has worked out well, as the winner was second in a Group 3 on her next start, and this son of Dawn Approach merits the utmost respect this afternoon. Timourid put in a career best when making the frame over course and distance recently and he could pose the biggest threat to the selection. That said, Monument Valley also merits consideration, while Musahaba and Eaglemont are newcomers to note.

Probable Starting Prices - 5/4 Sir Dragonet, 3/1 Buckhurst, 5/1 Trais Fluors (GB), 11/2 Latrobe, 7/1 Numerian

CURRAGH COMMENT Sir Dragonet is turned out quickly following his second in the Wolferton at Royal Ascot last week and warrants plenty of respect as he attempts to win for the first time since last year’s Chester Vase. That said, his rivals wouldn’t have much to find and BUCKHURST is likely to serve it up to Aidan O’Brien’s colt. His return over an inadequate trip at Navan was a fine performance and the son of Australia boasts a strong record over C&D being a dual winner in this grade. 2018 Irish Derby winner Latrobe appears best of the remainder.

NULLIFIER ended his 2019 campaign with an easy success at Navan in October and, off an opening handicap mark of 84, is fancied to make a winning return to action for Ger Lyons. The step back up to 6f should suit this No Nay Never colt and he can prove too strong for Elusive King, who caught the eye on reappearance here over a furlong further two weeks ago, and Big Gossey, who has plenty of early pace.

WIN: NULLIFIER

DANGER: ELUSIVE KING

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Jessica Harrington won this in 2018 and has a chance of repeating that achievement with Ancient Spirit, who made a winning reappearance in the Heritage Stakes earlier this month. Flight Risk was fifth in this when sent off favourite 12 months ago and has a decent record here, while Joseph O’Brien has a strong hand with his stable newcomer Raise You and hardy mare Crotchet. However, the nod goes to BOWERMAN, who landed the Irish Lincolnshire with plenty in hand over course and distance recently, and the six-year-old could take some stopping on current form.

No corresponding race last year.

CURRAGH COMMENT VERHOYEN could outrun a nice price in this competitive handicap, as he rarely runs badly at this track and is entitled to have improved for his comeback effort over an inadequate trip at Naas last week. He finished behind Flash Gordon, who was second past the post and then demoted to third, in that Listed Sole Power Sprint Stakes, but is capable of reversing that form with Jessica Harrington’s charge over this longer trip. Psychedelic Funk is used to keeping better company and must be respected for an in-form yard, while Colfer Me ran a blinder first time up for this yard here 15 days ago and joins Romantic Proposal on the shortlist.

CURRAGH COMMENT FRENETIC left a favourable impression when making a winning debut over an extended 5f at Navan and is expected to give a good account over this stiffer 5f for a stable who have their string in tremendous order right now. Blue Cabochon shaped encouragingly when fourth over track and trip on debut and could improve for the application of a tongue-tie, though Chief Little Hawk, a debut winner at Navan who contested the Windsor Castle next time out (with stablemate Hyde Park Barracks in arrears on both occasions), is feared most.

There were only three runners. Back then, the Irish Derby was run on the second day of a four-day meeting and Selim won on each day. He had a walk-over on the first day, the day after the Irish Derby he again beat Tom King in the three-mile Queen’s Plate and on the final day he won over four miles. Selim was bred by Dublin sports writer D. Kinsella and was owned by Englishman James Cockin who was based at Hednesford in Staffordshire and made frequent raids on Irish races. In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-three-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

1964 SANTA CLAUS

Santa Claus burst onto the scene as a two-year-old with a wide margin success in the National Stakes, where he marked himself as a future Classic horse. He delivered on the promise shown as a two-year-old, landing the Irish 2,000 Guineas before going on to win the Epsom Derby under 50-year-old Scobie Breasley. A strong favourite for the Irish Derby, he won in fine style by four lengths, and his rich pedigree can be traced all the way back to the Godolphin Arabian.

1970 NIJINSKY Vincent O’Brien won the Irish Derby on seven occasions during his career and perhaps the most iconic of those victories was that of Nijinsky in 1970. The son of Northern Dancer arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby as the unbeaten winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby and he didn’t disappoint. Nijinsky would go on to even greater fame in the months after that, completing the fabled Triple Crown by winning the St Leger at Doncaster. To this day, no other horse has completed the Triple Crown.

38

1981 SHERGAR Having won the Derby by no less than 10 lengths in 1981, he arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby on a wave of expectation. With Lester Piggott taking over the reins from Walter Swinburn, the son of Great Nephew made no mistake, prevailing by a very easy four lengths. After his racing career finished later that year, Shergar returned to The Curragh to stand as a sire in Ballymany Stud. Such was the regard he was held in by Irish racing people, he was paraded down the main street in Newbridge in scenes unlikely to ever be repeated.

1990 SALSABIL Prior to the 1990 renewal of the Irish Derby, 90 years had passed since a filly had won the race. Despite the race being contested by the Derby winner Quest For Fame and the highly-regarded Belmez, it was the John Dunlop-trained 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner Salsabil that was the focus of attention. It was highly unusual for such a talented filly to take on the colts in a Classic, so when Willie Carson guided her to a ž-length victory, it created a sensation.

LEGENDARY

WINNERS

1992 ST JOVITE There have been few more spectacular winners than St Jovite in 1992. While the son of Pleasant Colony had finished second to Dr Devious in the Derby earlier that month, the rematch at the Curragh was no contest at all, with St Jovite powering away from his rival to score by a remarkable 12 lengths. It wasn’t just a visually impressive performance either, as he came home in a time of 2 minutes 25.6 seconds, which smashed the previous race record of 2 minutes 28.8 seconds set by Tambourine II in 1962. It is a record that stands to this day.

2001 GALILEO Arguably the best of Aidan O’Brien’s twelve winners of the Irish Derby is Galileo, who won by four lengths in 2001. The son of Sadler’s Wells followed his Epsom success with another smooth victory in the hands of Mick Kinane before completing a notable treble when landing the King George at Ascot. He has since become the greatest stallion of his generation, to date siring six winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

40

2016 HARZAND A memorable victory for Pat Smullen, Dermot Weld and the Aga Khan, Harzand showed grit, speed and class to win this race a few years ago. Backing up his success in the Epsom Derby, Smullen was at his brilliant best aboard the son of Sea The Stars, guiding him home and holding off a late challenge from the talented Idaho to land his second Irish Derby after the success of Grey Swallow in 2004.

2019 SOVEREIGN The result of last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby may not have been expected, but Sovereign routed the field under Padraig Beggy to record a six length success in the Classic. Down the field at Epsom, the son of Galileo made every post a winning one to record a memorable front-running success with a fine staying performance.

2020

2020 will mark the 155th running of the Irish Derby. This is the 13th year of sponsorship of Ireland’s flagship race by Dubai Duty Free.

History The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third. In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-three-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-anda-half.

Female Trainers

The Irish Derby has never been won by a horse representing a Female trainer. The Jessica Harrington trained Grandee was the latest one to attempt to break the hoodoo in 2017.

British Challengers

British runners have traditionally enjoyed much success in the race (21 wins in the last 50 years), but have been relegated to a supporting role in recent times. The victory of Jack Hobbs in the 2015 renewal was the first Britishtrained success in the race since Balanchine in 1994. The biggest ever British raiding party was in 1996 when a nine-strong British team came up short behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zagreb.

Maidens The last maiden to win the Irish Derby was Sindon in 1958, trained by Michael Dawson in Ireland and ridden by Liam Ward.

French Challengers

Pardal, third in 1950, was the first French runner in the race. He was owned by Marcel Boussac and ridden by Rae Johnstone. French-trained horses have won the Irish Derby eight times in all including four victories in the last 25 years, namely; Hurricane Run in 2005, his sire Montjeu in 1999, Dream Well in 1998 and Winged Love in 1995. Malacate (1976), Irish Ball (1971), Prince Regent (1969) and Tambourine (1962) were the others.

Record Time The fastest winning time in the Derby was registered by St Jovite in 1992 when Jim Bolger’s brilliant colt came home in a time of 2 min 25.6 sec, which smashed the previous record of 2 min 28.8 sec set by Tambourine II in 1962. 42

Smallest/Largest Fields The smallest ever field was in 1868 when Madeira defeated his sole rival, Bee Quick, by six lengths. Madeira only ran twice after his Irish Derby win where he was beaten on successive days at Bellewstown! 1962 witnessed the biggest ever turnout for the race as Tambourine II saw off 23 rivals to become the first ever French-trained winner of the race. 2012 and 2014 saw the joint smallest fields since 1912, with just four rivals taking their chances against the Derby heroes Camelot and Australia respectively. This year’s field is the biggest since 1977.

Dead Heats

Only twice has the result of the Irish Derby come down to a dead heat and on both occasions the horses involved have been English-trained raiders. Haine and Zodiac shared the honours in 1924, while 10 years later Patriot King and Primero were inseparable passing the post.

Most Successful Jockey Morny Wing is the most successful jockey in the Irish Derby, recording six victories between 1921 and 1946. Steve Donoghue and Lester Piggott both won five. Seamus Heffernan is the most successful current licenced jockey with three wins in the race.

Most Successful Owners

The 2016 victory of Harzand saw the Aga Khan overtake his grandfather His Highness the Aga Khan III as the most successful individual owner in the history of the race with what was his sixth success. The latter had his colours carried to victory five times between 1925 and 1949, while Shergar gave the present Aga Khan his first success in 1981 and was followed by Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988), Sinndar (2000), Alamshar (2003) and the aforementioned Harzand (2016). Mind, that title could well be disputed as various combinations of the Coolmore partners, namely John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have owned 15 winners of the race in the last 21 years. Indeed, the six most recent of those winners have all carried the silks of Derrick Smith, which puts him right behind the Aga Khan.

Winning Siblings The last siblings to win the race were Ribocco in 1967 and his full-brother Ribero in 1968. Both horses were trained in England by Fulke Johnson-Houghton, ridden by Lester Piggott and owned by Charles Engelhard.

Leading Sire

Another jointly held title, the accolade of the most successful sire in the race is held by Gallinule and the recently deceased Sadler’s Wells – two giants of their time. Gallinule produced six winners between 1895 and 1901, while Sadler’s Wells got off the mark with Old Vic in 1989. The following year his daughter Salsabil won before Dream Well in 1998, Montjeu in 1999, Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral in 2002. Sovereign’s victory last year saw Galileo join Gallinule and Sadler’s Wells as the leading sire of the race with six winners, and a victory by one of his progeny this year could see him overtake the two as the leading sire.

Youthful Jockeys Two 19-year-old jockeys have ridden the winner of this race. Martin Quirke was Irish Champion Jockey in 1923, riding 86 winners, and he landed the Irish Derby in 1919 with victory in the saddle aboard Loch Lomond. Joseph O’Brien equalled this feat in 2012 when winning the Irish Derby with the top-class Camelot, who he’d ridden to previous victory in the English 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby.

Shortest Priced/Longest Priced Winner In 1907, Orby was the first horse to attempt the English-Irish Derby double and he duly obliged, with his starting price of 1/10 making him the shortest ever priced winner of the Classic. The shortest priced horse in the race since then was Australia at 1/8 in the 2014 renewal. Zarathustra is the longest-priced winner, prevailing at 50/1 in 1954. Ridden by Paddy Powell and trained by Michael Hurley, he had finished fifth in the Irish 2000 Guineas but had run badly in the Gallinule Stakes on his previous start.

Beaten Epsom Runners In Recent Years The disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the racing calendar up in the air, and unusually there is only a week between the Epsom and Irish Derbies, with the Irish equivalent being run first. Both Frozen Fire in 2008 and Soldier of Fortune in 2007 finished unplaced at Epsom before triumphing in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Soldier of Fortune was fifth at Epsom while Frozen Fire was only 11th. Last year’s winner Capri finished 6th at Epsom before winning at the Curragh. Previous to that duo, the last horse to win the Irish Derby after having been unplaced at Epsom was Tyrnavos (12th at Epsom) who caused a 25/1 shock on soft ground in 1980. Others who were placed at Epsom before triumphing at the Curragh recently were Jack Hobbs (second at Epsom) in 2015, Treasure Beach (second at Epsom) in 2011, Fame and Glory (second at Epsom) in 2009, Dylan Thomas (third at Epsom) in 2006, Alamshar (third at Epsom) in 2003, St Jovite (second at Epsom) in 1992, Sir Harry Lewis (fourth at Epsom) in 1987, Law Society (second at Epsom) in 1985 and the great El Gran Senor (second at Epsom) in 1984. St Jovite’s win was unusual in that he turned the tables on his Epsom conqueror Dr Devious, finishing two lengths second to him at Epsom prior to inflicting a 12-length defeat on him at the Curragh. 43

Father-and-Son Combinations

The win of Camelot in 2012 was the first time in history that a father/son trainer/ jockey combination was successful in the Irish Derby and they repeated the feat with Australia in 2014.

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY THIS YEAR’S KEY CONTENDERS CROSSFIREHURRICANE (USA)

HHHHH

KITTEN’S JOY (USA) - LOUVAKHOVA(USA) Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN

Unbeaten from four starts, this promising type landed the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes last time out with a stylish victory. While the form might not be the strongest, he looks a horse on the up and is by a top emerging sire in Kitten’s Joy.

SANTIAGO AUTHORIZED - WADYHATTA (GB)

HHHHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

A colt with a fine stride who landed the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last time out. While that was over a slightly longer trip of 14 furlongs, his juvenile maiden form is strong and he looks to have improved hugely over the winter.

ARTHUR’S KINGDOM CAMELOT (GB) - MADEIRA MIST

HHHH

Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

This son of Derby hero Camelot took three attempts to get off the mark but has run well with credit in top company since. He came out well in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out and wears cheekpieces for the first time.

SHERPA ZOFFANY - EIRNIN

HHHH Trained by DONNACHA O’BRIEN

A maiden winner at Roscommon, this son of Zoffany ran a fair race in the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes, not getting a clear run late on and looking one to watch next time out. This is a big race to be pitched into however.

FISCAL RULES MAKE BELIEVE (GB) - GOLD MIRAGE

HHH Trained by JIM BOLGER

It’s not often that Jim Bolger chucks an unexposed type in at the top level, but he did exactly that with this horse in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas last time out. He made eye-catching headway to finish fifth and isn’t one to discount here.

DAWN PATROL GALILEO - GWYNN

HHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

Another Galileo colt, although this one is a touch less exposed than a few of his rivals. A strong favourite for a maiden at Leopardstown last time out, he looks to have something to find on the basis of that form.

IBERIA GALILEO - BEAUTY BRIGHT

HHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

A first time out winner, he’s found life tough in his starts since but has hinted at having ability. Blinkered first time last time out in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, he was still a little keen and he’ll need to take a step forward to figure here.

GALILEO CHROME

AUSTRALIA (GB) - CURIOUS MIND (GB) Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN

By Australia (not Galileo!), he broke his maiden at the second time of asking at the Curragh, winning by a head. This represents a big step up in class but he may have some untapped potential. A big ride for Edward Greatrex. 44

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY THE FORM In the quest to find the winner of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, we take a look through some of the key trials for this race and the contenders to come out of them. A notable omission from the key trials for the race this year is the Ballysax Stakes, rescheduled for Dundalk as a trial for the Kentucky Derby. Replays are available to make sure you’re fully up to date with all your form study!

COOLMORE TEN SOVEREIGNS GALLINULE STAKES Joseph O’Brien looked to have a perfect contender for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby in Crossfirehurricane as he aims to build on the success of Latrobe a few years ago. This fine Kitten’s Joy colt demonstrated a promising amount of staying power to land the mile and a quarter event, with his course experience a big plus for those supporting him.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REPLAY OF THE COOLMORE TEN SOVEREIGNS GALLINULE STAKES

DERRINSTOWN STUD DERBY TRIAL STAKES Held at Leopardstown, this race saw a bold front-running performance from the Aidan O’Brien-trained Cormorant, an expensive purchase who prevailed under a fine ride from Padraig Beggy. The form stacks up too, with subsequent Royal Ascot winner Russian Emperor and eye-catching second.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REPLAY OF THE DERRINSTOWN STUD DERBY TRIAL STAKES

Iberia looked to be one who would benefit from the run when finishing third, with Agitare and Sunchart finishing in fourth and fifth. Iberia and Sunchart represent this line of form in today’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

46

TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS The first Classic of the season isn’t often a stepping stone to this race, but with the changed fixture list this year a different opportunity is presented. Aidan O’Brien’s Desert King did the double back in 1997 under Christy Roche, but we could see a repeat that feat repeated here.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REPLAY OF THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS

The sole representative of this race comes via the Jim Bolgertrained Fiscal Rules, who was held up and made smooth progress to finish fifth, hinting of more to come.

KING EDWARD VII STAKES Held at Royal Ascot, this race hasn’t often been a key trial for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, but with the calendar changes we could see a few of the runners from that race line up here. Mogul was a strong favourite but looked to be one who would improve for the run as he travelled well but found little, with stablemate Arthur’s Kingdom, who runs in this race, finishing second.

QUEEN’S VASE Santiago takes a step down in trip following victory in this race, which may be a little inconvenient for him. Nevertheless, his way of going and turn of foot late on suggests he should cope with this different challenge to the one he faced at Royal Ascot last time out.

THE VERDICT CROSSFIREHURRICANE gets the nod following an impressive victory in the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes. Previously a Listed winner at Dundalk, he’s four from four in his career to date and won in comfortable style over 10 furlongs a few weeks ago. We know he runs well at the Curragh, he’s smartly bred and on ratings he’s one of the top contenders in this race. A mention must go to Santiago, who won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last time out but now drops in trip, and to Fiscal Rules who ran an eyecatching race in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas two weeks ago. That run hinted at bundles of ability and the step up in trip will be a big test of that potential. An outsider to note is Tiger Moth, who was beaten by the promising Ten Year Ticket in a maiden back in October, before defying the odds to break his maiden over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown. 47

CURRAGH COMMENT SANTIAGO created a big impression when making a winning return to action in the Queen’s Vase over 1m6f at Royal Ascot last week. That performance suggests the drop in trip should not be a problem and the son of Authorized remains on an upward curve. The recent King Edward VII second Arthur’s Kingdom could prove to be the main threat to his stablemate, especially as he may improve for the first-time application of cheekpieces. Crossfirehurricane’s pedigree suggests that 1m 4f may stretch his stamina but the unbeaten colt should not be underestimated. The shortlist is completed by the maiden Fiscal Rules, who was far from disgraced when filling fifth place in the Irish 2,000 Guineas last time.

CURRAGH COMMENT Joseph O’Brien looks to have a strong hand here with last year’s winner MASTER OF REALITY and Twilight Payment. The former defied odds of 33/1 to win this race, which was ran at Navan, 12 months ago but proved that to be no fluke when posting a number of solid efforts thereafter, including when a length third behind Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup. He has likely been aimed at this race for a while and can get the better of his classy stablemate, who won the Curragh Cup last year, and 2019 Irish Derby scorer Sovereign.
