SkyBet Raceday
OFFICIAL RACECARD 1
WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, Welcome to the Curragh for Sky Bet Day. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. Today we welcome a new sponsor to the Curragh and we would like to say a big thank you to Sky Bet for their generous support. These are challenging times for all of us and a new sponsor for a big race is particularly welcome at this time. The Sky Bet Ebor Trial Handicap is aimed at those horses hoping to go to York for the Sky Bet Ebor in August. The Sky Bet Ebor is one of the most prestigious and valuable races of the year and it is great that the Curragh now has a race that links us to this great race and another one of the World’s great racecourses. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back with owners permitted to attend from Tattersalls Gold Cup Day on 26th July. We miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 4

CURRAGH COMMENT IRISH CHIEF clearly benefitted from his debut experience judging by his second-placed finish to the exciting prospect Merchants Quay over C&D a fortnight ago. The son of War Front may still have more improvement left to come and he should be taken seriously. Mexico City is a stablemate of the selection and he could be his main threat if taking a step forward from his first outing. Fight Zone is a full-brother to last year’s smart juvenile King Neptune and he is the pick of the newcomers, while Dame Dandy completes the shortlist.
WIN: IRISH CHIEF
DANGER: FIGHT ZONE
PLUS 10 BONUS SCHEME The connections of the winner, if qualified under the Rules of the Plus 10 bonus scheme, will share a prize of €12,500.

CURRAGH COMMENT CARRYTHEONE was only beaten a head by Aidan O’Brien’s Delphi here last month and, with the latter having followed up at Navan since, more is expected here from Johnny Murtagh’s representative. The selection was arguably unlucky last time, when short of room a couple of furlongs out, and might claim compensation. Daylight Come drops in trip after finishing fourth behind Derby hero Serpentine two weeks ago, while Finans Bay, fourth behind the selection recently, is also noted.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Nam has been campaigned over a mile recently but the sone of Sixties Icon should be capable of getting involved at this distance and comes into the race on the back of a pleasing fourth at Naas on his reappearance. A Few Bob Short was first past the post at Galway and has claims if returning to action in the same form, but a chance is taken on CARONDA. A close-up fourth over this trip at Dundalk in March, she runs off a 2lb lower mark here and could exploit that rating.

No corresponding race last year.
CURRAGH COMMENT ARDHOOMEY, who is a Group 2 winner over 5f at this track, was only denied by a neck on his seasonal return over C&D last month. A 2lb rise for that effort is fair and the eight-year-old merits the utmost respect this evening. Fastar has won his last two starts and he could prove to be the main threat to the selection. That said, Blairmayne and Flaming Moon should not be underestimated.

SON OF REST won the Ayr Gold Cup on a testing terrain in the autumn of 2018 and wouldn’t be deterred if rain got into the surface here. The six-year-old represents an in-form trainer and his latest outing at Navan can be forgiven as the ground was quick enough. Make A Challenge is probably the most talented performer in the race but was a little disappointing over 6f here 12 days ago, while Buffer Zone also helps to set the form standard.

SKY BET EBOR TRIAL Today sees the inaugural running of the Sky Bet Ebor Trial, a Premier Handicap which leads to the Sky Bet Ebor, held at York in August. While Irish domination in British handicaps would tend to throw up fond memories of Cheltenham Festival glory, the Irish have a fine record in the Sky Bet Ebor, with Mustajeer winning the race in style last year. Back in 2001 the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mediterranean was guided home under Mick Kinane and since 2010 Irish trainers have performed well in the prestigious handicap.
Mustajeer Dirar landed the 2010 renewal for Gordon Elliott under a fine Jamie Spencer ride and since that win a host of Irish trainers have sent their fine stayers to contest the race on the Knavesmire. In 2011 the David Wachman-trained Mount Athos could only manage eighth under Wayne Lordan, but Royal Diamond came within a neck of winning the race in a year later for Thomas Carmody and Niall McCullagh, only to be denied by Frankie Dettori aboard Willing Foe. Ted Veale was well backed for Tony Martin in 2013 and was rather unlucky to finish only fourth under Fran Berry, but Mutual Regard put up a fine performance to win in 2014 under then five pound claimer Louis Steward for Johnny Murtagh.
Mutual Regard
The much missed Wicklow Brave ran a superb race to finish second to a big outsider in 2015, with subsequent St Leger third Fields Of Athenry back in fifth under Donnacha O’Brien.
2016 saw a fairytale winner, as the Tony Martin-trained Heartbreak City landed a fine touch under Adam McNamara, winning by a huge four lengths in the ultra competitive handicap following a win in a handicap hurdle at Galway a month prior. A great story and success for connections, Tony Martin also saddled the third, Quick Jack, under Oisin Orr. Heartbreak City would go on to be beaten only a head in the Melbourne Cup Heartbreak City 2017 drew a blank for the Irish, with the Willie Mullins-trained Ivan Grozny only able to finish 15th under Jim Crowley as the sole Irish representative in the race. Jarlath Fahey got in on the action in 2018 when saddling Sea The Lion to finish third under Ronan Whelan, with a certain Mustajeer a neck behind in fourth. Mustajeer overcame the draw in stall 2 to win the contest under Colin Keane last year, before moving to Australia with trainer Kris Lees.

CURRAGH COMMENT Joseph O’Brien and Lloyd J Williams appear to have a couple of solid chances here, with VERIMLI making slightly more appeal than the dropped-in-class Latrobe. A three-time winner in France, the former was sent off favourite for his stable debut here last month and shaped with plenty of promise, running on in the closing stages despite being keen throughout. He is entitled to improve for that comeback, and stepping up two furlongs should also help, so a big run is forecast. Mirann, Lynwood Gold and Dalton Highway are others to note.
