The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

Others who merit consideration are Cooper’s Hawk, Horoscope and Supershock.

CURRAGH COMMENT LUSTOWN BABA has looked a shade unlucky to find just one too good the last twice and could claim an overdue win here after a short break for Willie McCreery. The three-year-old has surprisingly been dropped 1lb despite finishing second at Naas last time, and should find these conditions to her advantage from a low draw. Blairmayne has placed in competitive races here the last twice, while Rough Diamond defied a market drift to score on debut over C&D recently.

A HISTORY OF THE ANGLESEY STAKES The Anglesey Stakes is run over the Anglesey Course, a unique distance to the Curragh Racecourse of 6 furlongs and 63 yards (1265m) and the oldest race in the Irish calendar to be continuously run over the same distance since it’s inauguration in 1829. The first running was won by Regulator, trained at Maddenstown. The Anglesey course and the Anglesey Stakes are named after Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. As a Field Marshall he was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and he led what was described as a spectacular charge of the British Heavy Cavalry, which checked and in part routed the French Army. One of the last cannon shots fired that day hit Paget in the lower right leg necessitating amputation. In recognition of his heroism he was created Marquess of Anglesey on the 4th of July 1815. Henry Paget was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in February 1828. In December of that year he wrote a letter to Patrick Curtis, the Catholic Primate of Ireland stating his belief in the need for Catholic emancipation, this opinion led to him being sacked by the British government. In 1830 a new government was formed, and he was reappointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was responsible for introducing state-aided education to 400,000 Irish children. We have no written records about the origins of the Anglesey Stakes, however it can be assumed that the inauguration of the race by the Turf Club in 1829 was in honour of Henry Paget as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Why a distance of 6 furlongs and 63 yards was decided upon is also unknown, however bestowing a starting post title as well as a race title upon the Marquess of Anglesey was an additional honour. Races run over the Anglesey course are described as a scurries, and a scurry is a unique race description to the Curragh Racecourse. Throughout the Curragh season several prestigious premier handicaps are run over this course, which is a seamless race-heritage going back to 1829 and the inauguration of the Anglesey course and distance. No other racecourse in the world can boast such a unique distance with such a long history.

THE JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE AND STABLES ANGLESEY STAKES First ran in 1829, this contest is usually staged during the Irish Oaks meeting. It is ran over the distance of six furlongs and 63 yards, a rare trip at the Curragh which is shared by the Scurry Handicap. Many a big name have won this race in the past, with Mick Kinane leadin the way as the winningmost jockey. Mick won this race five times, notably with Johannesburg in 2001 and One Cool Cat in 2003. His wins in that period represented a period of dominance for Kinane and Aidan O’Brien, as they won the race for three consecutive years as a partnership, with Ontario filling the gap as the 2002 winner. Aidan O’Brien was an unstoppable force during this period, winning the Mick Kinane race for five consecutive years, with Seamie Heffernan and Kieren Fallon winning from the saddle in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Vincent O’Brien

A different O’Brien is the leading trainer in the history of this race, the legendary Vincent O’Brien. The first master of Ballydoyle took his first win in 1962 with Philemon, going on to win the race with Nijinsky in 1969, Storm Bird in 1980 and Lake Como in 1987 some of the most remembered winners of the Anglesey.

Last year saw Mick Halford and Ronan Whelan team up to win with the talented Roman Turbo, who enhanced his record at the Curragh to make it two wins from two runs at the track. While he couldn’t win in tougher contests, both at the Curragh, he saw off a competitive field in the race last year, beating Sheila Lavery’s Lil Grey and Ger Lyons’ Soul Search by around a length, giving away a 3lb penalty to his rivals.

ONES TO WATCH A classy field of two-year-olds assemble for this contest, with all the major yards represented. Aidan O’Brien is doubly represented, with Lipizzaner and Preamble, both sired by American stallions in Uncle Mo and No Nay Never respectively. The former is relatively exposed so preference of the pair is for Preamble, who broke his maiden on soft grond at Fairyhouse last time out. Jim Bolger also runs two, Aunty Bridy, who was a good second in the Group 3 Weld Park Stakes over seven furlongs last time out. He looks the stable choice with Kevin Manning aboard, with Rory Cleary in the saddle on New Treasure. A Case Of You drops back in trip followng a win at Down Royal last time out, as does New Emerald Bay who ran on Irish Champions Weekend. Lady Princess landed a Listed race last time out and is worthy of respect. 19

CURRAGH COMMENT LIPIZZANER finished down the field when sixth in the Middle Park at Newmarket last Saturday but Aidan O’Brien’s colt, who had got off the mark on his penultimate outing at Navan, will find this a much easier assignment and he can bounce back to his best. Stable companion Preamble built on his third at Naas when scoring at Fairyhouse at the start of the month and he commands plenty of respect along with the Jim Bolger’s pair, Aunty Bridy and New Treasure, as they bring a solid level of form to the contest.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has won seven of the last 10 renewals of this and holds leading claims once again with HIGH HEELS, who built on her second to the Group 1-winning Shale when getting off the mark at Cork last month. Stablemate La Joconde is a half-sister to Irish Derby champion Santiago and is foolish to ignore, while Coolmore’s hand is strengthened by Donnacha O’Brien’s April Showers, who got the better of the consistent Sense Of Style when scoring in similar conditions at Navan. CURRAGH COMMENT There has been no bigger improver this season than SONNYBOYLISTON, who started the campaign on a mark of 68 but after winning three out of four handicaps, culminating in a stroll on Irish Champions Weekend, finds himself rated 112. With that in mind, he should be up to Group 3 level at least and can continue on his upward curve. Order Of Australia ran well in a couple of Classics and will arrive here brimful of confidence following victories at Dundalk and this venue. Etneya and Up Helly Aa also have to be considered closely.

THE PADDY POWER IRISH CESAREWITCH The name “Cesarewitch” originates from the anglicised version of Tsesarevich, which is the title of the heir to the throne in Imperial Russia. The race is named in honour of Tsesarevich Alexander (later Tsar Alexander II) who attended the inaugural race in 1839 at Newmarket, England. The Cesarewitch makes for a thrilling event, as it sports a huge field of runners, with the maximum number of starters allowed on track an impressive 30. Willie Mullins Making it one of the most entertaining races of the year. It’s open to horses aged three years old and upwards and raced over a marathon two miles, which makes it a true stamina test, appealing to Dual-code trainers as many of their horses are trained for the longer distances. This race has been won by all of racing’s big names, but one name stands out in particular. Willie Mullins enhanced his fine record in the contest with victory last year, training Royal Illusion to a demolition eight length win under Joey Sheridan. The master of Closutton has won this race a remarkable number of time, including consecutive renewals in 2015 and 2016 with Digeanta and Laws Of Spin respectively. The yard is represented this year by Kaatskill Nap and the returning Royal Illusion in this year’s race. A young Donnacha O’Brien, then claiming seven pounds in the saddle, guided home El Salvador to victory in 2014 for his father Aidan, a race in which Joseph O’Brien saddles Isotope, Tonkinese, King’s Vow and Grandmaster Flash as a trainer today. Reflecting on winners in the last ten years, Donnacha O’Brien we’ve seen horses as big as 25/1 win the race (El Salvador in 2014 and Lord Erskine in 2017), while a big race of this nature can be primed for a gamble on a favourite, with Minsk in 2011 and Voleuse De Coeurs both obliging as market leaders for John Oxx and Dermot Weld respectively. We’ve seen promising young riders land this race too with claiming jockeys Sam James, Leigh Roche, Donnacha O’Brien and last year Joey Sheridan all winning as an apprentice. The main contenders for the race this year include Charles Byrnes’ Run For Mary, who was close up behind subsequent Group 1 winner Princess Zoe at Galway last time out. Promising claimer Sam Ewing takes the ride and he looks well handicapped, as does Cape Gentleman. The Emmet Mullins-trained son of Champs Elysees was five lengths behind Mt Leinster at Listowel last time out, and given that was his Irish debut, there should be further improvement coming from him.

Golden Spear (third) finished behind the selection at Galway and has place prospects along with Ballydoyle three-year-old Shoshone Warrior, last year’s winner Royal Illusion and Kaatskill Nap, a stablemate of the last-named who returns from a spell hurdling.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT MT LEINSTER wasn’t all that far short of the best novice hurdlers around last winter, and his sixth in July’s Galway Hurdle was creditable considering he made a triumphant Flat bow earlier at the Ballybrit festival. He has since performed to that level with a couple of excellent Flat efforts and sets a good standard now. His stable companion Legal Spin has claims on his best efforts, but perhaps the less exposed Run For Oscar is Mt Leinster’s primary danger.

CURRAGH COMMENT OVERHEER built on a couple of decent efforts when gaining his first career victory at Tipperary last month and the four-year-old boasts strong credentials again, despite a 9lb rise from the handicapper. Up With The Play has to enter the reckoning on his handicap bow following his recent fourth at Gowran Park, while C&D winner Lady Savanah and Excuzio Joe, who placed at Fairyhouse at the start of the month, appeal most of the remainder.
