WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for the first of our two race days in November, which will bring our season to a close for 2020. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our digital interactive race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes and features some exciting and innovative content. GAIN Equine Nutrition have been a fantastic partner of the racecourse since 2012 and we are delighted to acknowledge their support of the racecourse with the sponsorship of two races today. I would also like to thank the Irish European Breeders Fund who have been superb supporters throughout the whole season. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. 2020 has been a very challenging year for organisations in the tourism business and I am pleased that we are able to support the work of Into Kildare, the tourism authority for County Kildare, since we resumed racing in June. Although it was disappointing that the Taste of Kildare event planned for the Curragh in September had to be cancelled, we are delighted to be able to help promote the virtual Taste of Kildare at Christmas. Eamonn Lloyd has been an integral member of our training grounds team for over 20 years and we are pleased to acknowledge his contribution by naming a race to honour his imminent retirement. On behalf of all his work colleagues and friends, I would like to thank him for his contribution to the Curragh and wish him and his family health and happiness in his retirement. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

WHITE, black panel, light blue cap

(128) (9) F

A 33,000 guineas purchase who is related to a winner over middle distances and whose dam also scored over longer trips. May come into her own when granted a stiffer stamina test. Star Rating 2

Probable Starting Prices - 7/2 Joan Of Arc, 5/1 Sunniyra, 6/1 Dagoda, Queen’s Speech (USA), 7/1 Spinning Moon, 10/1 Disco Boots, Maloja (GB), 14/1 Cocobanana, New Hill, 25/1 Inveterate, Pallasmore Lass, Paloise (FR), 33/1 Dragon Quest, Uncharted (GB), 50/1 Gimme A Wink, Ms Frizzle, Smaoineamh Sile (GB) No corresponding race last year.

CURRAGH COMMENT Although horse racing is never predictable, JOAN OF ARC has to figure highly on the shortlist. A full-sister to two Classic winners, Aidan O’Brien’s regally bred daughter of Galileo isn’t guaranteed to be as good as siblings Gleneagles and Marvellous, but if she has a good portion of their talent she will be tough to stop. Stablemate Queen’s Speech has more of a dirt pedigree but is respected, as are other newcomers Spinning Moon and Sunniyra. The biggest danger from those with form could come from Leopardstown fourth Dagoda.

CURRAGH COMMENT Sir Lamorak caught the eye when an unlucky fifth at Leopardstown and along with Galileo newcomers Arturo Toscanini and The Mediterranean, gives Aidan O’Brien a strong hand. His sons will also have a big say in the outcome of this prize, with Donnacha saddling Naas/Navan runner-up Emporio, while Joseph is responsible for Gowran third Champion Green and debutant Ratib, a stoutly-bred son of Frankel. The O’Brien battalion face a formidable opponent in BASEMAN, though, and Dermot Weld’s well-bred colt gets the nod on the back of his narrow Tipperary defeat.

ROUGH DIAMOND won going away over 6f here on debut and though he was well beaten into second on his handicap bow, the winner has since tasted Listed glory and the third has placed at that level as well since. Edward Lynam’s gelding should be suited by the extra furlong here and can land the spoils. Silver Service won with a bit in hand at Leopardstown last time and evidently relishes testing conditions, while Miss Molly T and Sagittarius Rising are others to note in an open heat.

CURRAGH COMMENT BREAKING NEWS may still be a maiden but she went very close to getting off the mark on her last visit to this venue, prior to finishing fourth as favourite at Gowran. She handles testing conditions and looks poised to strike. Youceeyouceecee has regained some sparkle and should be back in the winner’s enclosure before too long. Born Invincible arrives in decent form, with Miss Florentine another to consider.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

33

RACE FIVE

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

Eamonn Lloyd will retire this week after over 50 years’ service in the racing industry. Eamonn started with Mick O’Toole at the age of 12, while still in school. Eamonn also worked with Paddy Prendergast and Stephen Quirke before joining the Curragh Racecourse. He has been a great addition to the Curragh Racecourse for over 20 years and his knowledge of the training grounds has been invaluable.

Clear Quartz and Teddy Boy also won on their latest outings and have to be taken seriously, while it will be worth keeping an eye on handicap debutant Hodd’s Girl and Indiana Grey, who will go on the ground and is enjoying her racing in blinkers.
