WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to The Curragh for our final race day of 2020. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our digital interactive race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes and features some exciting and innovative content. I would like to thank Paddy Power who have been fantastic supporters of The Curragh throughout the year sponsoring a total of eleven races including five races today. I would particularly like to acknowledge the support of Dean Finn who has coordinated the partnership on behalf of Paddy Power. I would also like to thank the Irish European Breeders Fund who have been superb supporters throughout the whole season. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us throughout the season. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. 2020 has been a very difficult year for everyone but from the racecourse’s point of view the quality and competitiveness of our racing has been second to none with over 2,000 runners this year over 20 days ensuring we have been able to showcase the very best of flat racing. I would sincerely like to thank all our stakeholders for their support this year who have all played a major part to ensure our season has run so well. I would like to pay tribute to Owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff, valets, farriers, vets, doctors, security and cleaning staff, together with our Stewards, HRI , the IHRB and their officials, for their magnificent support this year. I would also like to recognise the great work carried out by the staff of the racecourse throughout the year. We have had wonderful racing at the Curragh all season and I hope you that you enjoyed it. I would like to wish you and your families good health and happiness over the winter months and hope we will be able to welcome everyone back when our new season starts next March. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

THE CURRAGH - A LOOK BACK AT AN OUTST Despite the coronavirus pandemic changing many things over the last half a year, there is one thing that has remained the same – the quality of the racing. When racing resumed at the Curragh, it did so with two days of top class action, Tattersalls Irish Guineas weekend in June. The first two-year-old race of the season was won by a familiar name – Aidan O’Brien. Admiral Nelson took the five furlong maiden, saddling a 1-2 with Merchants Quay a length behind. The following race was won by subsequent St Leger winner Galileo Chrome, who broke his maiden over a mile and two furlongs under Shane Crosse for a different O’Brien – Joseph. That race has superb form, with subsequent English Derby winner Serpentine behind in fifth place. There were further clues on offer on the first day of racing, as Johnny Murtagh’s talented filly Champers Elysees took the seven furlong three-year-old handicap under Danny Sheehy. She would progress to win the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend, marking a great season for Johnny Murtagh as a trainer. On this fine first day of resumed racing, Crossfirehurricane won the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes, Bowerman won the Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire for Adrian McGuinness and Ronan Whelan and Leo De Fury won the Coolmore Magna Grecia Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes. However, the highlight of the day was the first Classic of the season, the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas. Siskin maintained his unbeaten record to win under a fine ride from Colin Keane, a name which would be spoken much more as the season progressed. Siskin showed a lethal turn of foot to win by a length and a half, putting in a remarkable performance considering he had a less than clear run and becoming the first Classic winner for trainer Ger Lyons and jockey Colin Keane. An exciting three-year-old colt, Siskin will have one final run in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland before retiring to stand at stud in Japan. The Saturday of Tattersalls Irish Guineas weekend saw Gavin Ryan win the Ragusa handicap under Edification for Mark Fahey, with Lancaster House seeing off Speak In Colours to win the Coolmore Calyx Gladness

TANDING 2020 SEASON ON THE TRACK Stakes. Magic Wand continued her fine career by winning the Lanwades Stud Stakes, and the consistent and talented mare has since been retired to stud. The feature race of the day, the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas, saw an all-O’Brien finish, with Aidan saddling the winner Peaceful, under Seamie Heffernan, and the third So Wonderful under Wayne Lordan. Donnacha O’Brien would have to wait for his first Group 1 win as a trainer as Fancy Blue could only finish second, but she would go on to win the Prix de Diane at Chantilly and the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. Peaceful won in fine style under Heffernan, winning by two lengths.
Festival action came thick and fast a few weeks later with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival. Subsequent Comer Group International Irish St Leger Trial winner Delphi broke his maiden over a mile on day one of the meeting, with Serpentine breaking his maiden in the first race on Saturday. The talented Buckhurst beat recent Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet in the Dubai Duty Free Jumeirah Creekside Hotel Alleged Stakes, with Santiago taking the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby under Seamie Heffernan, capping a 1-2-3-4 for Aidan O’Brien, with the fast finishing Tiger Moth back in second, five lengths to Dawn Patrol and Order Of Australia
9
THE CURRAGH - A LOOK BACK AT AN OUTST rounding off the quartet in a record breaking success for the trainer. On the Sunday of the meeting, Speak In Colours landed the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, while Magical marked a return to the track with a win in the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes. Racing in July saw Lynwood Gold win the inaugural Sky Bet Ebor Trial Handicap, while at the next meeting subsequent Vertem Futurity Trophy winner Mac Swiney broke his maiden at the second time of asking under Kevin Manning. Subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment won the Comer Group International Curragh Cup in a 1-2 for Joseph O’Brien, while the talented Romanised got back to winning ways with a win in the Paddy Power Minstrel Stakes. Ger Lyons’ season got even better with the success of Even So in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, marking a memorable day for the Lyons team and top rider Colin Keane. Princess Zoe showcased her class to win the Kildare Village Ladies Derby under
Jody Townend, and the talented grey mare would go on to win the Prix du Cadran at Paris-Longchamp in early October. Magical continued her great season when winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup in fine style, while the following month Thunder Moon broke his maiden in good style. The colt would go on to win the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes on Longines Irish Champions Weekend before running with great credit in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. At the same meeting, Lucky Vega turned round the form to win the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes under Shane Foley for Jessica Harrington, while subsequent British Champions Sprint winner Glen Shiel won the Rathasker Stud Phoenix Stakes under Oisin Orr for Archie Watson. Armory and Delphi won Group 3 contests, the Irish Field Celebrating 150 Years Royal Whip Stakes and the Comer Group International Irish St
10
TANDING 2020 SEASON ON THE TRACK Leger Trial, respectively for Seamie Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien, while also in August the talented pair of High Definition and St Mark’s Basilica, subsequent winners of the Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes respectively, both broke their maidens for Aidan O’Brien. Also on display on the same day was Mac Swiney winning the Galileo Irish EBF Futurity Stakes and Pretty Gorgeous, subsequent winner of the Fillies’ Mile, winning the A.R.M. Holding Debutante Stakes. Longines Irish Champions Weekend saw a double header of great racing action. Colin Keane got the day off to a flyer when landing the Bold Lad Handicap under Mr Lupton for Richard Fahey, while Cayenne Pepper earned valuable black type when winning the Moyglare Jewels Blandford Stakes. The Derrinstown Stud Flying Five went to Glass Slippers for Tom Eaves and Kevin Ryan, while Shale exacted revenge on Pretty
Gorgeous to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Thunder Moon put in an electric performance to win the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, while Search For A Song won her second Comer Group International Irish St Leger, winning in great style under Oisin Orr for Dermot Weld. Richard Fahey was at the double with the victory of Shark Two One in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale Stakes, with Johnny Murtagh and Billy Lee rounding off the weekend of action with Sonnyboyliston taking the Northfields Handicap. Later in September, High Definition landed a competitive renewal of the Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes, with subsequent Criterium International winner Van Gogh breaking his maiden at the fifth time of asking under Seamie Heffernan. The Paddy Power Irish Cesarewitch went to recent French import Cape Gentleman under Ronan Whelan for Emmet Mullins, while recently Lustown Baba continued her progression to win a handicap and Listed race four days apart.

CURRAGH COMMENT Disco Boots has shaped encouragingly in both starts thus far, including when a staying-on second over 7f here on Monday, and she sets the standard, while Absolutely and So Fascinating are interesting newcomers representing Donnacha O’Brien and Joseph O’Brien respectively. However, it could be their father, Aidan, who takes this race courtesy of FRILL. Her full-sister Zagitova won over this trip as a juvenile, as well as placing in Group 2 company over 7f, and it will be disappointing if the 900,000gns purchase doesn’t run a big race on debut.

CURRAGH COMMENT Charmed (84) and Shelly Banks (80) will go very close if running up their ratings, especially the latter who is lining up in receipt of 5lb from the boys. There are two other very interesting fillies in the race, though, as Miramis has been highly tried at the track so far, finishing sixth in the Group 2 Debutante on her introduction and fifth in the Group 3 Anglesey last time, and MONTEGO BAY shaped with enough promise on debut at Dundalk for Aidan O’Brien to suggest she can win a race like this before the end of the year.

THE CURRAGH RACECOURSE WOULD TO THANK THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS FOR THEIR SUPPORT
HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT MENAGERIE has displayed promise in all five of her previous outings and her last two performances suggest that the daughter of Fastnet Rock is arguably the one to beat today. Charlie Bassett, who finished fifth in a decent event at Leopardstown last time, hit the crossbar twice in September and he could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Others to note are Herculaneum and Vivandiere.

The hat-trick seeking Final Endeavour got the better of the useful Der Mc (second) last time and has relished the testing conditions when thriving over further of late. His stamina makes him a player in the forecast ground, while Tony Martin’s pair of Dundory and Jungle Jungle both placed on their latest outings and warrant respect. However, preference is for the consistency of NEWGIRLINTOWN, a three-time winner this season and only once outside of the top three. She won’t mind conditions and her apprentice jockey removes a handy 10lb as she bids to defy a career-high mark.

RACE SIX
CURRAGH COMMENT Lady Dahlia posted a solid run in defeat when third over this trip at Gowran last month and should be thereabouts with a repeat performance, though narrow preference is for Dermot Weld inmate CIEL D’AFRIQUE, who rattled the crossbar over 1m4f at Galway last time and could feasibly go one better now sporting first-time cheekpieces. Autumn Evening and Belper Rose are others worth considering for the minor money.
WIN: CIEL D’AFRIQUE

CURRAGH COMMENT GALTEE MIST showed no signs of stopping when successful over 7f here on Monday and a 6lb penalty might not be enough to anchor her if arriving in the same mood. CURRAGH COMMENT PRETTY BOY FLOYD was an easy winner here on Monday, building on his C&D triumph last month for Sarah Dawson, and could take the beating once more despite carrying a 6lb penalty. The five-yearold beat a few of these earlier in the week and could have too much for Beckwith Place, who likes testing ground and has been shaping well in defeat here lately. Ducky Mallon returned to form when third at Leopardstown recently and is also respected.
