WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for the second of our two race days in October. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our digital interactive race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes and features some exciting and innovative content. We are delighted to acknowledge the valued support of our race sponsors today. TRM have been a fantastic partners of the racecourse this year and I am delighted that a quality and competitive field will line up for the TRM Waterford Testimonial Stakes. This is a very historic race in our calendar commemorating Lord Waterford who was one of the founding fathers of Irish racing. Working with Larry, Raoul, Elaine and other members of the TRM team throughout the season on the Stable Staff Appreciation initiative has been really positive and we have been delighted to highlight and recognise the achievements by work stable staff once again with the support of TRM. We are also very pleased to welcome Equilux as race sponsors for the first time and would like to thank Sam Murphy for his support of the racecourse. I would also like to thank the Irish European Breeders Fund who have been superb supporters throughout the whole season Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT Plenty of these arrive here with valid form claims but none more so than NOTORIOUSLY RISKY, who took a big step forwards when finishing second in a sales race at Naas last time. The winner of that race has subsequently scored at Listed level and this unexposed filly has to be given the utmost respect this afternoon. I Am Magnetic and Tashgheel are both capable of going very well but they could be vulnerable to more progressive rivals, while Rosie Bassett and Grigadale complete the shortlist.

WIN: NOTORIOUSLY RISKY

THE TRM WATERFORD TESTIMONIAL STAKES This is one of the most historic races to be run at The Curragh and is named to honour the Marquess of Waterford, one of the founding fathers of Irish racing. Waterford Lodge located in the Curragh stable yard was his Curragh residence. Typically a competitive sprint, this Listed race returned to the Curragh last year after two years at Navan while the redevelopment work at the Curragh took place. Make A Challenge took the race last year for Denis Hogan and Joe Doyle, seeing off the Willie McCreery-trained Downforce by a widening four and a half lengths. Victory in the race marked a turning point in the career of the ex-Godolphin horse, as he’d exploited his handicap mark to best effect before taking the step up to Listed company. A fine fifth in the British Champions Sprint at Ascot followed, before a resurgent season this time around, with Listed wins at Naas, Navan and the Curragh, with a two length fifth in the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five on Longines Irish Champions Weekend. Looking further back in the history of this race, a host of top names in Irish racing feature. Burden Of Proof landed the 1997 and 1998 renewals for different jockeys and trainers, formerly with Pat Smullen and Charles O’Brien before a stable move to Aidan O’Brien saw Seamie Heffernan the winning rider in 1998. Aidan O’Brien next landed the race in 2007 with US Ranger and Kieren Fallon, and in between a series of English trainers and jockeys enjoyed a spell of wins in the contest. Peter Makin and Seb Sanders tasted success in 2001 with Spencers Wood, with Richard Whitaker and Fran Berry following up a year later with three-year-old Captain Rio. In recent years, the English challenge has been successful with the Charlie Hills-trained Shanghai Glory with William Buick in the saddle, while Fran Berry enjoyed a win after a 15 year break between drinks, winning with the Michael Grassick-trained Texas Rock in 2017. There is one rather familiar name which stands out however, that of Johnny Murtagh. The Group 1 winning jockey, and now trainer after Champers Elysees’ win in the Matron Stakes, won this race five times. He won for three different trainers from 2003 through to 2005, with Hanabad for John Oxx, Striking Ambition for Roger Charlton and Miss Sally for Mick Halford. Further success followed in 2011 with Eton Rifles for David Elsworth and Balmont Mast in 2013 for Eddie Lynam, the first of three consecutive winners in the race for the trainer, with Viztoria and Fort Del Oro following up under Pat Smullen and Billy Lee respectively.

RACE TWO

CURRAGH COMMENT MAKE A CHALLENGE has been outclassed in Group 1 company the last twice but he’s a force to be reckoned with at this lower level and could take plenty of beating. Romantic Proposal was fourth behind the selection here in August but her latest Group 3 fourth suggests she’s improved in the interim and could narrow the gap. However, the main danger may be Lustown Baba, who destroyed her rivals in a track-and-trip handicap last weekend and remains open to further improvement.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT BORN INVINCIBLE was successful on her most recent outing at Limerick and sets a fair recent form standard for the rest of the field to aim at. Shane Foley rides the four-year-old once more and a 6lb rise for those exertions 34 days ago doesn’t look at all harsh. Breaking News remains capable of better given her breeding for Jim Bolger, while of the remainder, Rotokura could go well.

CURRAGH COMMENT DELTA DAWN looks the pick of the Aidan O’Brien representatives and could step up on his Fairyhouse fourth last time now tackling this longer trip. Big runs could also be on the cards from bumper winner Pike County, who is improving between runs on the Flat, and Caldwell and Fil The Power, both of whom have shown enough ability to think they could figure on these terms. Any money for Jessica Harrington’s Flor De La Luna would also be interesting, given how popular she was in the betting first time out.

CURRAGH COMMENT ALLY CAY has plenty in her favour after finishing third at Navan last week for John McConnell and the four-year-old is fancied to take the beating despite a 3lb rise. This trip is expected to really suit the Alhebayeb filly and she is preferred ahead of Dermot Weld’s Awaasef, who should improve for the step up in distance. Thefaithfulindian has finished fourth in big fields the last twice at Navan and Dundalk and is also taken seriously.
