JACKPOT DES BORDES did well in bumpers last season and gets the nod to make a winning start to his hurdle career for the Paul Nicholls team. Ace of Spades could step up a good deal on his first attempt overhurdles and is second choice ahead ofTom Doniphon, another who displayed plenty of promise in bumpers last term.

SORCELEUR progressed with each run in bumpers, putting up a useful effort in a Grade 2 at Aintree on final outing, and will surely take a fair bit of beating if transferring that sort of form to hurdles at the first attempt. Pony Soprano is in good hands and seems likely to build on his third in a Sandown bumper now going hurdling up in trip, with Dangerous Touch fancied to fill the places.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys
Weatherbys proudly sponsor two of this afternoon’s seven races, starting with the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Handicap Hurdle.
PhilipHobbs&JohnsonWhitewonthe2023 renewal with Goshhowposh and the duo saddle two this afternoon, the consistent High Game Royal and the less-exposed MadMike, who won a match race here in February. He progressed with racing last season and begins the new campaign on aworkablelookingmark.
The weights are headed by course-anddistance winner Striking A Pose, who is actually unbeaten in four starts at the track. Still only eight, he was disappointing towards the end of last season but clearly saveshisbestforthisvenue.
TapNGoLeoremainsopentoconsiderable improvement after just three starts over hurdles and being the youngest runner in the 13-strong field, the Jonjo & A J O’Neill-trained five-year-old also has to berespected.
Of the more-exposed runners, Kepage is anothertonoteashehailsfromthein-form yard of David Pipe and ran well against a progressive young stayer when last seen. Whilst he has yet to win here at Exeter, he ran well off 3lbs higher when runner-up in March 2023 and the son of Getaway is versatileintermsofground.
10 go to post for the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Best Mate Handicap Chase, inwhichtheHobbs&Johnsonteam are represented by the returning Masters Legacy, who heads the weights but has
been absent for 606 days. He has had just the three chase starts (all here) and is rated just 1lb higher than when successful inNovember2022.
Bobhopeornohope has been out of form for some time now (pulled-up on his last four starts) but does hail from the yard of Kim Bailey, who has been in red-hot form duringtheearlyweeksoftheseason.
An Tailliur has been given a chance by the handicapper on hurdles form, whilst TeaClipper,RoseOfArcadiaandMoroder are ‘older’ contenders who have been fine servants for their respective connections overtheyears.
Abuffalosoldier has more to offer over fences and should appreciate the decent ground but often needs his first start of the season, whilst Art Deco, who was in a rich vein of form when last seen, would appreciatemoretestingconditions.
If he is wound-up for his return, Maclaine would be a danger to all.
The five-year-old Jupiter Allen, who has onlyhadtheonechasestart, andMaclaine completetheline-upandthelatterlooked progressive over fences last term, winning at Newbury in March before being sent off favourite for a competitive novices’ handicap at Ayr where he finished behind Abuffalosoldier. The pair with this most appealing claims are REHILL RELIC and Lusaka, with marginal preference for the former who should benefit from this slightly stiffer test now handicapping and the booking of William Biddick is an obvious plus. Lusaka won well on the Flat last time and is feared greatly back in this sphere off an attractive mark, while Sassified will be a threat if responding well to the first-time blinkers.
