LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM
Fakenham RACECOURSE
Friday 13th March 2020
Fine conditions and good ground set the scene for our final meeting of the curtailed 2019/20 season back in March, so it was no surprise to see some smart winners from the six races and six different yards in the winners’ enclosure.
The meeting began with the two-mile R.W.B. Still Brushing At 86 Claiming Hurdle and the Olly Murphy-trained Swaffham Bulbeck was sent off an odds-on favourite in the five-runner field. Ridden by 7lb claimer Callum McKinnes, the six-year-old tracked his closest market rival, the Jamie Snowden-trained Coole Well, for much of the contest before being shaken up on the approach to the last. He quickened well and powered clear of his rival in the closing stages for a comfortable three and a half length victory. Jockey Jonathan Burke was the big winner of our final meeting of last season, recording a double on the day starting with Onefortheroadtom, who edged out Echiquier to win the Prince Carlton Handicap Chase, run over three miles and a qualifier for the Challenger Staying
Chase Series. Owned by JP McManus and trained by Harry Fry, Onefortheroadtom jumped well throughout the contest and after the grey had gone head to head with Echiquier from the home turn, he pulled out just enough to beat his brave opponent by a neck. Burke’s second winner of the day came
in the Country Food Trust Fakenham Silver Cup Handicap Hurdle over two miles, where the Alan King-trained Nebuchadnezzar broke his maiden tag and defeated the smart veteran, Movie Legend, by a length in a thrilling contest. Always close to the pace, the fiveyear-old jumped and travelled strongly before hitting the front two out where his rival’s mistake could well have made the difference between winning and losing. Nebuchadnezzar kept on stoutly after turning for home and despite the best efforts of Movie Legend, who stayed on strongly, Burke’s mount recorded his first win on a racecourse. Medalla De Oro was a cosy winner of the third race on the card – the Robert Case Memorial Conditional Jockeys’ Maiden Hurdle under the excellent 10lb claimer, Jamie Neild. The Harry Whittingtontrained six-year-old was keen through the early stages of the race, but began to settle once he hit the front after just three hurdles. He was never really challenged from there on in and Whittington’s charge stayed on strongly to win by almost three lengths.
Another 10lb claimer, Nathan Brennan, gave a superb ride to the Henry Olivertrained Corri Lindo in the Walter Wales Memorial Handicap Hurdle, coming from last to first over the two-mile, four-furlong trip. Despite a couple of sketchy leaps from the ten-year-old through the contest, he made good headway three from home and burst through to lead approaching the last. His closest challenger, Present Chief, couldn’t go with him on the run in and Corri Lindo stretched two and a half lengths clear at the line. Closing out the card, Full Irish was a very comfortable winner of the Robert Hoare Memorial Open Hunters’ Chase for trainer David Phelan and jockey Jack Andrews. Held up in midfield for much of the three miles, the nine-year-old travelled and jumped easily, cruising up to challenge approaching the last. Only requiring pushing along to take the lead on the run in to the line, he mastered Buck Dancing more easily than the winning distance may have suggested and he could certainly be a Hunter Chaser to follow as this season progresses.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

CARY’S COMMODITY shaped much better than the result when failing to stay 25f on his Cartmel reappearance and this unexposed sort looks worth siding with now dropping back in trip. Pam Sly had a winner at Huntingdon earlier in the week and the low-mileage Xcitations rates a possible threat on his return to action.
