elcome to the fifth and final day of the 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

As we look forward to another afternoon of exhilarating sport, we look back to 1802, when the racecourse first hosted competitive racing. At that first public meeting, the third Duke of Richmond’s Cedar was defeated by the Prince of Wales’s Rebel in a match. Much has changed since then and Goodwood continues to be known throughout the world for hosting horseracing of the highest quality. First run in 1840, The Unibet Stewards’ Cup is the highlight of this afternoon’s racing, with a capacity field of 28 runners charging over the hill from the six-furlong start. A must-see sporting spectacle. Adding another layer of intrigue to today’s racing is the Group 1 PA Qatar International Stakes for Purebred Arabian horses. With representatives from Qatar, France, and the Netherlands, this prestigious race certainly lives up to its name. We are extremely grateful to Qatar, Unibet, LG and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of this afternoon’s racing. With eight races to look forward to, I hope that you have a fabulous time watching the horseracing at Goodwood today.

The 1884 winner of the Goodwood Cup, St Simon, was an outstanding racehorse, who was later referred to as the most influential stallion of the late Victorian and Edwardian era.

A statement on Goodwood Pilot Event for return of spectators to horseracing on 1st August From the BHA, RCA and Goodwood The government has informed racing’s leaders that it has withdrawn permission for a pilot event involving customers to proceed at Goodwood. The racing on Saturday will continue behind closed doors as it has on the earlier days of the Festival. The Prime Minister is setting out the rationale for the government’s decision but we understand that concern about the national infection rate is the primary reason. Goodwood Racecourse and the Racecourse Association have been leading work on the pilot event, with the safety of Members and all those attending as the most important priority. Government and public health officials, national and local, have been briefed throughout on the plans and had approved the approach being taken. We are clear that the decision to cancel is not a consequence of any concerns about these plans or the measures taken by Goodwood to keep attendees safe but relates to the changing national situation. We are very disappointed for those who were hoping to attend tomorrow’s event and for all those who have worked so hard to make it possible for spectators to be present. We will engage with public health authorities and DCMS over a rescheduled pilot at the earliest opportunity. Adam Waterworth, Managing Director of Sport at the Goodwood Estate commented; “We have been led by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport throughout and whilst we are disappointed by the news, the health and safety of attendees, customers and staff is of paramount importance.” David Armstrong, Chief Executive of the Racecourse Association, the RCA, said; “The RCA is very disappointed to learn that the pilot event at Goodwood Racecourse scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed. We understand and respect the issues raised within the Prime Minister’s announcement and have always maintained that public health has been paramount to any event, be it racing resuming behind closed doors or with crowds. The work undertaken by the sport, and especially the Goodwood team, to bring the safety protocols to life has been very thorough and detailed. It is worth reiterating there were no concerns with the protocols put in place by the sport and Goodwood Racecourse and we wish them the very best for the final two days of the Qatar Goodwood Festival which will take place behind closed doors. The RCA will continue to work closely with Government to plan future pilot events to welcome back crowds subject to the latest public health advice.”

Today ’s Feature The Unibet Stewards’ Cup

The Unibet Stewards’ Cup has been referred to as a ‘Cavalry Charge’ and, inaugurated in 1840, is one of the oldest and most competitive races at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The origin of the race dates right back to 1834 where the most senior Steward at the racecourse awarded a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing on that day. The chosen race varied each year meaning the Stewards’ Cup was run over distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile and a half. In its modern form, the race is run over six furlongs and is the feature race on the card, and is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards. The continued support of Unibet this year will extend the race’s rich heritage. The last horse to win back-to-back runnings of the Stewards’ Cup was Sky Diver in 1967 and 1968. Since then, it has become a nemesis of horses returning looking to win the race. Some of the most recognisable winners in the past include the likes of Lochsong, Danetime, Hoof It and Magical Memory, who all competed in fields of nearly 30 horses, making the race a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. Ex Jockey and now trainer, Richard Hughes boasts an impressive record in the modern era, winning the race four times between 1995 and 2014. Frankie Dettori won the race for the first time in 2015, ticking off one of the only major UK races to have evaded him so far. The second win wasn’t far behind for the charismatic jockey as he took victory in 2017 aboard Lancelot Du Lac for trainer Dean Ivory. 2018 saw Brighton born Jason Watson team up with top weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer, to score the 2018 champion apprentice title. Last year, Charlie Hills trained Khaadem rose to victory to take the title in a race that was described as one of the most competitive of the year.

The Glorious Five

The Qatar Goodwood Festival has always held the most prestigious flat racing in the country and this is a year of racing like no other. With two of the Glorious Five competing for their fourth victory on our hallowed turf alongside international favourites ready to defend their titles, it has been another historic year on the Downs. The Glorious Five Line-up Tuesday 28 July  The unbeatable triple winner, Stradivarius, returned to make history by winning his fourth Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.

Wednesday 29 July  The two Guineas winners went head to head, the English Kameko and the unbeaten Irish hero, Siskin for what was to be described as the race of the summer so far. This year’s Qatar Sussex Stakes title, however, belongs to the Summer Mile winner, Mohaather, with a thrilling victory against an impressive line-up.

Thursday 30 July  Japanese sensation Deirdre revisited the hallowed turf of Goodwood in a bid to hold on to her title. With a top-class line-up, this year’s trophy went to the French Oaks heroine Fancy Blue.

Friday 31 July  There was only one speed demon to contend with in the King George Qatar Stakes - Battaash. He came, he conquered, taking his fourth victory in superb style by breaking his own course record.

Ed Nicholson, who is the Head of Racing at Unibet, our official betting partner of festival week, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. Race 1, 1.50 pm

The Unibet Stewards’ Sprint Handicap Stakes

Charlie Hills, whose horses are running well, trains likely favourite Rewaayat here and he is taken to complete the hat trick. Drawn 12 of 17 he should be able to choose where to go should the speed be towards the stands or far rails and can follow up his facile Salisbury victory despite being raised 12lbs by the handicapper.

Race 2, 2.25 pm

The Unibet Summer Handicap Stakes

King’s Advice won this race last year – one of 8 victories during the season – and although he hasn’t been in such form this term, he comes here on his lowest handicap mark for some time and can return to form on a course he obviously acts around.

Race 3, 3.00 pm

The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes

It may be déjà vu yet again here as last year’s winner Enbihaar looks set to take this Group 2 for the second consecutive year. Having finished 4th on her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket last time, she should be in perfect order with that run behind here and can be yet another winner this week for jockey Jim Crowley.

Race 4, 3.35 pm

The Unibet Stewards’ Cup

We are delighted to sponsor the Unibet Stewards’ Cup for a third consecutive season. It has always been a competitive handicap, and in the last few years the quality of the horses in our race has improved. Each of the last three winners of this race has been rated above 100, and the trend may continue with 10 of the field having reached that threshold. One of those, Meraas, is drawn in stall 4 and looks another typical improving handicapper from the Mark Johnston stable. Three-year olds have a decent record in this contest too – Khaadem won it last year when rated 107 in stall three – and it’s uncanny how many similarities there are between him and Meraas. In an open race it may pay to also have a horse from the other side of the draw running for you as well. Richard Hannon’s Lexington Dash is drawn 25 and has some decent form to his name, and he could do best on that side of the draw.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 30

Read Through the Card – Continued Race 5, 4.10 pm

The Qatar Handicap

Cold Front goes from landing his maiden into his first handicap on a mark of 91. At time of writing he isn’t the favourite, which will be the first time in his fledgling career that that has been the case, but he rates a decent bet to keep on improving for connections who took the Oak Tree Stakes yesterday with One Master.

Race 6, 4.40 pm

The British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Stakes

We are more akin to seeing the colours of Simon Munir & Isaac Souede at Cheltenham rather than Goodwood but their silks will be worn by Hector Crouch aboard Forever Forward here. The Clive Cox trained two-year-old was beaten just a neck on his racecourse debut finishing strongly over seven furlongs at Sandown and has a nice draw in 2. He can go one better here.

Race 7, 5.10 pm

The LG Signature Apprentice Handicap

This race, limited to apprentice jockeys, may go to the only rider in the field to have won a Group 1 race. Cieron Fallon took the July Cup last month about Oxted and has been riding exceptionally well in recent weeks. He rides top weight Muraad, who is a consistent sort. He has steadily risen in the weights without winning but he can get his head back in front again here.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 31

Deryan and Bel’izam are the two improving horses both posted career bests on their most recent runs and shouldn’t be underestimated the latter is preferred of that pair as this trip suits him better. Tayf won a thrilling renewal of this race in 2017, since then he’s been extremely consistent usually in the top Arabian races all over the world and is unlucky he doesn’t have a third Group One win to his name, he’s sure to be thereabouts. More often than not though he has bumped into Ebraz who’s the best horse of his generation. Ideally he would prefer slightly further to be seen at his best. That said it’s not stopped him winning and finishing second twice in the last three running’s of this race. He will no doubt improve for his prep run in France and he meets his narrow conqueror that day off level weights here, he can land his seventh Group One as he begins his quest for a second Doha Triple Crown.

Win: Ebraz

Danger: Tayf

In 1952 Goodwood became the first British racecourse to provide racegoers with live commentary. Racing commentary on BBC radio had begun five years earlier, again here at Goodwood.

The first race meeting at Goodwood was staged by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801. The official start to Goodwood’s long racing heritage was a two-day meeting held under Jockey Club rules in April the following year. This meeting, Goodwood’s only one of the year, moved to late July in 1814 and the festival, now run over five days, has remained at the same time of year ever since.

In 1830 when George IV thought he was on his deathbed such was his anxiety to find out the Goodwood results that he stationed a relay of post boys between Windsor and the racecourse to convey the results as they came through.

2019 WINNER: POYLE VINNIE 9 9 5 James Sullivan 20-1 (Ruth Carr) 23 ran STEWARDS NOTED: THE LAMPLIGHTER: Following its run on 24/7/2020 it was reported that the horse lost a shoe.

Race Summary The highly-progressive Rewaayat merits the utmost respect having won very impressively at Salisbury, although he is 12lb higher and is stepping up in grade. With that in mind, a chance can be taken on 2018 winner TOMMY G, who also finished second in 2017 and third last year. Jim Goldie's seven-year-old caught the eye when chasing home a very well-handicapped rival at Ayr last time and he should not be underestimated. Treacherous has been progressive this year and merits a place on the shortlist, as do Call Me Ginger and May Remain.

2019 WINNER: KING’S ADVICE 5 9 10 Joe Fanning 7-2 (Mark Johnston) 13 ran

Race Summary Laafy went down fighting when second in the Old Newton Cup and having scored impressively at Newbury before that, holds leading claims as he returns to further. The form of Calling The Wind's Ascot win is solid and he could play a part following a 7lb rise, while the consistent Mordred is interesting stepping up in trip. Mark Johnston has a fine record in this and his King's Advice was twice a C&D winner last season, including when taking this off a 4lb higher mark. Stablemates Hochfeld and Themaxwecan are both capable operators who can't be ignored, but a chance is taken on PLATITUDE, who is a dual track-and-trip winner and can take advantage of an attractive rating following an encouraging second at Sandown.

Win: Platitude

Danger: Calling The Wind

Hatta, winner of the 1977 Molecomb Stakes, has the distinction of being the first ever horse to run in Britain for Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, who has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s leading owners and the founder of the hugely successful Godolphin stables.

Snow, who drops down from Group 1 level after contesting the Irish Oaks, and Cabaletta, a recent Listed winner over 1m4f at Newbury, are in receipt of weight, though the selection is still expected to have their measure and can successfully defend her crown.

STEWARDS NOTED: HEY JONESY: Following its run on 20/6/2020 it was reported that the horse lost its right hind shoe. STONE OF DESTINY: Following its run on 11/7/2020 it was reported that the horse reared as the stalls opened. KIMIFIVE: Following its run on 11/7/2020 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run. GEORGE BOWEN: Following its run on 26/7/2020 it was reported that the horse was slowly away.

Race Summary Three-year-olds have a strong Stewards' Cup record, having won three of the last five renewals, and MERAAS bids to continue the trend. Mark Johnston's colt bounced back from a disappointing Newmarket effort when landing the Scottish equivalent of this event at Hamilton and a 6lb rise might not be enough to stop him from progressing further. Nahaarr won in good style at Newbury, getting the better of Watan, and the pair are expected to be in the shake-up once again. David O'Meara's pair Summerghand and Gulliver are just two others to note despite being at the top of the weights.

Race Summary COLD FRONT took four attempts to get off the mark, bumping into some smart rivals in the process, but his confidence will have been done the world of good by scoring at Haydock last time and the William Haggas-trained colt might be fairly treated on his handicap debut off 91. King Ragnar seemed to like the fast ground when triumphant at Leicester over this trip a fortnight ago, while Mister Snowdon found only one too strong at Yarmouth and is also considered.

Race Summary GOLDEN FLAME sets a good standard here as he's bumped into Battleground and Devious Company, who finished first and second in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes here earlier this week, on his two starts so far. A return to a sounder surface should suit and he can get off the mark in these calmer waters. Forever Forward and Longlai both caught the eye when second on their introductions and are respected, while the form of Titian's Newmarket fourth looks strong.

Mark Johnston-trained horses don't usually run badly at both Newmarket's July meeting and this festival, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see OVERWRITE bounce back now on better ground. The three-year-old's mark has dropped 3lb and Thomas Greatrex is one of the more experienced riders in this contest. Alfred Boucher likes to dominate and is another who will enjoy this lively surface, while Streak Lightning's unbeaten run was ended at Haydock recently but he had excuses there.
