elcome to the third day of the 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Three hundred years ago, Charles, the first Duke of Richmond led a gallop over this turf with the famous Charlton Hunt, one of the world’s first foxhunts. Like his father, King Charles II, the Duke and his son, hosted match races for high stakes between their Royal and aristocratic friends. In 1802, the third Duke flung open his gates to welcome racegoers to the first public meeting and it quickly became an essential part of the English summer season. The highlight of the afternoon’s racing is the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, for the world’s best fillies and mares. This race was inaugurated in 1840, and we look forward to seeing another great name added to its illustrious roll of honour. We welcome the return of our first Japanese runner and race victor of 2019 back to Goodwood in Deirdre.. Today we are also honoured to welcome The John Pearce Racing Foundation as one of our race sponsors. Described as a quintessential Englishman, John Pearce was a renowned owner and breeder, who had a passion for thoroughbreds and loved attending Goodwood every year. The John Pearce Foundation was set up in his honour in 2018, which supports charities that aid current and former participants in horseracing and thoroughbred breeding, such as Racing Welfare. We give thanks to our race sponsors Qatar, Unibet, Mirabeau en Provence, John Pearce Racing, Gusbourne, The European Breeders Fund and Tatler for their generous support of racing today. I hope that you have a very enjoyable afternoon at home following today’s racing at Goodwood.

Today ’s Feature The Qatar Nassau Stakes
Inaugurated in 1840, the Qatar Nassau Stakes celebrates the friendship formed between the fifth Duke of Richmond and the Dutch Royal family, the House of Orange and Nassau. This Group 1 event is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares. Run over a distance just short of ten furlongs, it was originally restricted to three-year-olds, but was opened up to older horses in 1975 and continues to be targeted by leading owners and trainers. The brilliance of dual Classic race winners Thebais and La Fleche helped put the Nassau Stakes on the map in the latter half of the 19th century, after which it continued to grow in popularity and importance. Supreme champion fillies, Sceptre and Pretty Polly, enhanced the race’s burgeoning reputation still further in the early 20th century. Sceptre was surprisingly beaten in the Sussex Stakes, but bounced back later in the week to claim victory in the 1902 renewal of the Nassau Stakes. However, it was legendary jockey Lester Piggott with a haul of five winners and Newmarket trainers Sir Noel Murless, Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Henry Cecil who would dominate the race’s post-war history. Sir Henry’s record eight winners include the wonderful filly Midday, who carved herself a slice of racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race three times in consecutive years from 2009. 2017 saw British and Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien take back-to-back victories in the race as Winter ran out a comfortable winner under the expert guidance of Ryan Moore, following Minding’s success in 2016. Global powerhouse Godolphin registered a second success in the Nassau Stakes in 2018 with Oaks runner-up Wild Illusion. She added the G1 Prix de L’Opera to her CV before being touched off in the Breeders’ Cup at the end of last season. 2019 saw a historic moment take place in this very race, when Deirdre defied the odds to be the first Japanese-trained runner to win at Goodwood. The globetrotting mare returns to defend her title this afternoon.

The Glorious Five
The Qatar Goodwood Festival has always held the most prestigious flat racing in the country and this is set to be a year of racing like no other. With two of the Glorious Five competing for their fourth victory on our hallowed turf alongside international favourites ready to defend their titles, this promises to be another historic year on the Downs. The Glorious Five Line-up Tuesday 28 July The unbeatable triple winner, Stradivarius, returned to make history by winning his fourth Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.
Wednesday 29 July The two Guineas winners went head to head, the English Kameko and the unbeaten Irish hero, Siskin for what was to be described as the race of the summer so far. This year’s Qatar Sussex Stakes title, however, belongs to the Summer Mile winner, Mohaather, with a thrilling victory against an impressive line-up.
Thursday 30 July Queen of the Downs and Japanese sensation Deirdre will be looking to hold on to her title in the Qatar Nassau Stakes.
Friday 31 July There’s only one speed demon to contend with in the King George Qatar Stakes - Battaash returns to defend his title and look to take a fourth victory.

R acing on Saturday 1 August Pilot event at Goodwood Racecourse on Saturday 1st August The Qatar Goodwood Festival will be the very first event in the country to allow spectators to enjoy live sport once more. Goodwood was chosen by the government to run this pilot event and it will be conducted with strict observance to safety guidance to ensure the event carries minimal risk to attendees and the local community. With a capacity for 5,000 people, only annual members, their guests and participants of the sport will be admitted. Ed Nicholson, who is the Head of Racing at Unibet, our official betting partner of festival week, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. Race 1, 1.10pm
The Mirabeau en Provence Handicap Stakes
John Quinn’s Bal Mal is in the form of his life having won four times since late June and those victories have seen him rise in the ratings from 55 to 79. All those wins have been in Class 5 & 6 events and here he is asked to contest a Class 3 contest that may bring an end to his winning sequence. Topweight Electric Ladyland has already plundered a Class 3 Goodwood 5f sprint this season and having shown her wellbeing by taking a Class 2 5f Windsor sprint last time, is the pick to make her class count.
Race 2, 1.45pm
The Unibet You’re On Handicap Stakes
Ryan Moore is an interesting booking for Mark Johnston’s hat-trick seeking Zabeel Champion. Having won his last two at Newmarket, Zabeel Champion faces a different type of challenge here, and in addition has another 8lbs to shoulder. But if he can get an early lead, he may prove mighty hard to peg back, as has been the case in each of those last two runs.
Race 3, 2.15pm
The Qatar Richmond Stakes
Supremacy was impressive when winning his Windsor maiden, posting some decent sectionals in the process. He takes on two-year-olds with proven group form here, but there was plenty to like about how he pulled clear of subsequent winner Fools Rush In, who is very well regarded. He’s taken to make the necessary improvement to win this Group 2 contest.
Race 4, 2.45pm
The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes
Investec Derby form comes under the microscope here with runner up Khalifa Sat, 5th English King, 6th Mogul and 10th Highland Chief joining battle again. The early betting skirmishes have seen English King well supported, but it may pay to stick with Khalifa Sat who beat the Ed Walker-trained colt by just under a length, yet is more than double the price at time of writing. Khalifa Sat also has course winning form to his name.
Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 30
Read Through the Card – Continued Race 5, 3.15pm
The Qatar Nassau Stakes
Winning machine Nazeef aims to make it seven victories on the bounce when she lines up for this Group 1 event. Her last five wins have been over a mile and she has to prove she stays another two furlongs here, but her style of running should help her get it. She is taken to beat some of the best middle distance fillies around.
Race 6, 3.45pm
The Gusbourne Nursery Stakes
Rommel disappointed at Ascot last time, but he was carrying a penalty that day and it may have been a decent race. Having chased the early leader, he was easily cast aside when the pace quickened up, but stayed on resolutely close to home to keep fifth place. He starts life in handicaps from a rating of 74 and has already won a race, something a great number of his rivals haven’t.
Race 7, 4.20pm
The British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Teodolina ran a race full of promise on her Newmarket debut to finish 3rd and is expected to improve from that experience to win here. She missed the break first time up, and ran green throughout, but once she met the rising ground, she finished strongly, suggesting this extra furlong would be in her favour.
Race 8, 4.55pm
The Tatler Nursery Stakes
Winter Power is turned out again quickly following a facile victory at Redcar on Monday afternoon. A 6lb penalty might not be enough to stop the Tim Easterby-trained runner from completing a quick-fire double.
Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 31

2019 WINNER: CELSIUS (IRE) 3 8 9 P J McDonald 11-2 (Tom Clover) 16 ran STEWARDS NOTED: CASPIAN QUEEN: Following its run on 26/6/2020 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.
Race Summary Everything points to a massive run from ELECTRIC LADYLAND, who was successful over course and distance three starts ago and produced a career-best performance when winning at Windsor last time. A 5lb rise is fair and she gets the nod. Caspian Queen has run well on both previous visits here, including when a short head behind the selection last month, and she warrants plenty of respect equipped with first-time cheekpieces. Spanish Angel, third in the aforementioned Windsor contest, also boasts solid course form and has recorded both of his wins to date under this rider.
Win: Electric Ladyland
Danger: Caspian Queen
In 1952 Goodwood became the first British racecourse to provide racegoers with live commentary. Racing commentary on BBC radio had begun five years earlier, again here at Goodwood.
The first race meeting at Goodwood was staged by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801. The official start to Goodwood’s long racing heritage was a two-day meeting held under Jockey Club rules in April the following year. This meeting, Goodwood’s only one of the year, moved to late July in 1814 and the festival, now run over five days, has remained at the same time of year ever since.

ZABEEL CHAMPION has won his last two for Mark Johnston and could take some stopping once more now under the guidance of Ryan Moore for the first time. The three-year-old has an 8lb rise to deal with, but looks typically uncomplicated and could get an easy lead. Starcat has always been held in high regard by Hughie Morrison and should enjoy this step up in trip, while similar sentiments apply to Magnetised, who was just touched off at Thirsk.

Race Summary YAZAMAN has found just the high-class Tactical too good at both Royal Ascot and in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket last time. The Kodiac colt is now backed to get his moment in the spotlight with the William Haggas team flying. Qaader was fourth in the aforementioned Newmarket event and finished best of those in this who took part in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He is likely to be thereabouts for a yard which does well at this meeting, while Admiral Nelson, a disappointing Coventry Stakes favourite, won well at the Curragh before that and could bounce back.
Win: Yazaman
Danger: Admiral Nelson
Keep an eye on the week’s winners in the two-year-old races at The Qatar Goodwood Festival as you may be seeing a future Classic winner. Dr Devious, Mister Baileys, Ameerat, Shamardal , Sir Percy and Galileo Gold all tasted success here as juveniles before going onto Classic glory the next season.
Goodwood’s reputation as one of the pinnacles of the social calendar flourished under the seventh Duke of Richmond, who was a friend of King Edward VII and his son George V, both of whom stayed with His Grace for the Festival.
In 1830 when George IV thought he was on his deathbed such was his anxiety to find out the Goodwood results that he stationed a relay of post boys between Windsor and the racecourse to convey the results as they came through.

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes John Pearce Racing is delighted to sponsor the 108th renewal of the Gordon Stakes. Born just after World War 1, John Pearce was schooled in England before returning to Hong Kong to join his family business, Hutchison International. Mr Pearce used his success in business to pursue a passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds. During almost 80 years of racehorse ownership, he had a particularly successful partnership with the trainer, Geoff Wragg. Together they won the Ascot Gold Cup with Arcadian Heights (1994), before coming a close second in the Derby with Dragon Dancer (2006). Mr Pearce was a long-time fan of, and regular visitor to, ‘Glorious Goodwood’. The sponsorship of the Gordon Stakes complements Mr Pearce’s middle-distance breeding ambitions and continues a long-standing family racing association. The trophy design mirrors that of the Pearce Memorial Cup, one of the oldest races in Hong Kong, run in memory of Mr Pearce’s father, ‘Tam’. On Mr Pearce’s passing in 2017, his legacy established John Pearce Racing to continue his breeding and racing activities. It also created the John Pearce Foundation, a UK registered charity that supports racing related charities and other good causes. For more information on both endeavours, please visit www.JohnPearce.org

Race Summary Subjectivist enjoyed the run of the race when landing Listed honours at Hamilton last time but repeating those tactics in a field containing several Derby protagonists will not be an easy task. Khalifa Sat finished ahead of ENGLISH KING (fifth) and Mogul (sixth) when runner-up at Epsom but was better positioned than both of those rivals throughout in what turned into a tactically messy race. Ed Walker's charge finished well in the closing stages that day and it is unlikely Frankie Dettori will be caught by surprise by the pacesetter here too.

Race Summary Magic Wand stayed on past last year's winner of this, Deirdre, when fourth in the Coral-Eclipse last time and could go well, but Ryan Moore has opted to ride FANCY BLUE instead. Donnacha O'Brien's filly has improved markedly this term, starting her season with a second-placed effort in the Irish 1,000 Guineas before landing the Prix De Diane when stepped up to this trip last time. She could strike for the Classic generation here. Nazeef was always doing enough to land the Falmouth last time and has every chance of seeing out the trip, which makes her a big player.

Race Summary WILLIAM BLIGH has done nothing but improve in three starts thus far and was mightily impressive when running away with a novice contest at Haydock last time. He's got a good attitude and looks straightforward, so it will be disappointing if he doesn't go very close on his handicap debut. Running Back has shaped encouragingly in both starts over 6f and is likely to improve for this step up in distance, while Codebook should run well for Mark Johnston, who has won three of the last six runnings of this contest.

2019 WINNER: VIVIDLY 2 9 0 Kieran Shoemark 16-1 (Charles Hills) 15 ran STEWARDS NOTED: MISS CHESS: Following its run on 15/7/2020 it was reported that the horse ran green early-on.
Race Summary This appears to be a wide-open contest and it is hard to rule any out, but the marginal preference is for TEODOLINA. Richard Hannon's filly finished well to fill third place on her debut over 6f at Newmarket three weeks ago and she could be hard to beat with that experience now under her belt. Dreams Unwind and Miss Chess have similar profiles to the selection and they are obvious threats, while 210,000gns purchase Spirit Of Bermuda and Zooma are arguably the pick of the newcomers.

2019: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR
Race Summary DIFFERENT FACE only found Windsor Castle runner-up Tazaman too good on debut and looked suited by a sharp test when scoring at Lingfield on her second outing. She dominated that contest from start to finish and seems to have been saved for this. Winter Power was impressive in victory at Redcar on Monday and only has a 6lb penalty to contend with, while Golden Bear bumped into some smart types at Windsor last month and won't mind dropping to 5f.
Win: Different Face
Danger: Winter Power
