The Course Course Characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the uent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Position of Starting Stalls Straight Course-on stands side rail. Round Course-on inside rail except 1m 3f & 1m 4f-on outside rail.

WHO TO WATCH 1.15 Download The tote Placepot App Handicap MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS Marlborough Sounds turned into a decent enough hurdler for Amy Murphy through the winter, hitting the frame in two novice events before bolting up on handicap debut. He’s returned to the flat with a narrow win at Kempton, and with that run under his belt he’s sure to be fully wound up for this. While the testing conditions might catch many of these out, the Camelot gelding is a winner on soft ground, and has put up his best performance with give underfoot. 1.50 Download The tote Placepot App Irish EBF Novice Auction Stakes TWILIGHT HEIR Michael Bell’s Twilight Heir will be tough to beat on all recent form, even allowing for the penalty he carries for his Catterick win. He’s a quick starter, so could get a nice early lead and be able to dictate the pace under Oisin Murphy. His Racing Post Ratings are clear of anything that any of his five opponents have put up previously, so unless one of those takes a big step forward, they have it all to do to stop him. 2.25 Download The tote Placepot App Irish EBF Nursery Handicap MUTAZAWWED While Mutazawwed has been as busily campaigned as you would expect from a Mark Johnston two-year-old, he’s shown a decent level of form. Perhaps most importantly, he’s got winning form on soft ground, and in fact put up his best Racing Post Rating with give underfoot when beaten a head at Hamilton in August. This 7f trip could see him go on again, having been outpaced before staying on strongly at the finish last time at Chester. 2.55 tote/British EBF October Fillies’ Stakes WITH THANKS Royal Ascot winner Onassis brings the strongest form into the card’s Listed feature, having run some big races in Group contests of late. However, we’re taken with William Haggas’ thrice-race With Thanks, who not only looks to have plenty of potential, but seems to appreciate a slog in the mud. She’s clocked some solid Top Speed figures in her three runs to date, and getting weight off a lot of her rivals, is picked to cause a mini upset. 4

3.25 tote.co.uk Home of The Placepot Handicap PETTOCHSIDE He may now be the grand old age of 11, but John Bridger’s Pettochside still has plenty to give on the racecourse. The veteran has won or placed in six of his nine starts this summer, and although this is a step up in class, he can still make his presence felt among the younger brigade. Victorious here over 5f last time out, he now steps up a furlong in trip with an added 3lb on his back. On his 100th racecourse start, it would be apt were he to cause a minor surprise and roll back the years at the venue he’s recorded seven of his 15 career successes. 3.55 Download The tote Placepot App EBF Novice Stakes KING FRANKEL There’s not a lot of form to go on in this novice event, but a tentative nod goes to Mark Johnston’s King Frankel. He took a decent step forward when facing an increased stamina test here last month, finishing second to a horse that went on to land a handicap off a mark of 82. The three newcomers in the field will need to be above average if they are to defy that sort of level of form on debut. 4.25 Join tote.co.uk With £10 Risk Free Handicap GOSHEN While he may have disappointed favourite backers on his return to action for the first time since his Cheltenham mishap, there was enough to like about Goshen’s Haydock run to stick with him here. All his wide margin wins last season came on soft ground, and while he is 8lb higher than his last flat win, he’s probably improved more than that in the meantime. So long as the trip isn’t too sharp, he’s the one to beat. If he’s found to lack the required turn of foot for this though, Natural History might be the biggest danger. 5.00 tote.co.uk Handicap CARP KID Maori Knight looks one of a couple in here that might benefit from this drop in trip, having failed to fully see out 1m2f in his recent runs. Of more appeal stepping down to a mile though, is John Flint’s Carp Kid. He has been campaigned over 10 furlongs for much of this season, but put up a career best when second over this trip at Windsor two starts back. That run came on soft ground (only the third time he encountered it). With similar conditions here, he’s very interesting at a price. 5

STEWARDS NOTED: KASHI:Following its run on 10/9/2020 it was reported that the horse hung right handed throughout.

Race Summary Plenty of these arrive with valid form claims but preference is for ORIN SWIFT, who has progressed with every start this year and he was only narrowly denied at Haydock last time. The six-year-old was third over 1m6f here before that and should still be on a workable mark. Land Of Winter rarely runs poorly and should go very well once again, while there may still be more to come from Pleasure Garden. Those looking for an each-way alternative should consider Platitude.

TWILIGHT HEIR hasn't run a bad race in his short career so far and can double his career tally for Michael Bell. The two-year-old will be tough to stop if running to his ofďŹ cial rating of 80, and is fancied to take this before moving on to better things on ground that should suit. Marks Bear showed signs of ability when fourth on debut at Ascot, while Caribou wouldn't be winning out of turn after two impressive efforts so far.

Wholelotafun built on some ďŹ ne efforts in France when scoring over C&D in soft ground, and conditions look perfect for another bold bid. Race Summary Ralph Beckett has won the last two renewals of this contest and, of his trio of representatives this time, Afraid Of Nothing, a heavy-ground winner, makes each-way appeal. Tomorrow's Dream has winning course form in the book and could be tough to keep out of the frame if handling conditions, but it might be worth siding with unbeaten Godolphin contender LEAFHOPPER in the belief she will take this rise in grade in her stride to complete a hat-trick. With Thanks relishes testing conditions and merits a place on the shortlist along with grade dropper Onassis.

Race Summary KING FRANKEL took a big step forwards from his debut to finish a close second in a similar contest over 1m2f here last month. That form was boosted when the winner won a nursery this week and Mark Johnston's colt has to be given the utmost respect this afternoon. Night Of Dreams was very green in the early stages of his debut at Salisbury but the way he stayed on that day suggests that he has the ability to the make the frame in a race of this nature. Going Gone and Sunset In Paris are both bred to be useful middle-distance performers and market support for either of them would have to be noted.

STEWARDS NOTED: HYANNA:Following its run on 3/10/2020 it was reported that the horse ran too freely early-on.

Race Summary Much was made of GOSHEN's return to Flat action when he failed to beat a rival home at Haydock last month, but he didn't shape as badly as that result suggested and could be suited by this drop in distance for Gary Moore. This will set him up nicely for a return to hurdling, with recent Chester hero Natural History likely to put up the most resistance ahead of It's Good To Laugh, who tries this trip for the first time.

Distances: 1-2 ...........

Race Summary GEORGE OF HEARTS needs to step up on his last two efforts but he's been eased in the ratings and is now only 2lb higher than when striking on heavy ground at Newmarket last November. Sword Beach and Risk Taker are two generally consistent three-year-olds to consider, though the main danger may be Carp Kid, who drops back from 1m2f after fading into fourth at Newbury. River Dawn could also take a hand if ďŹ rst-time cheekpieces have the desired effect.
