Race preview from Weatherbys
It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring five races across the card at Leicester this afternoon, and Sixmilebridge is an interesting runner in the opening Weatherbys Stallion Book “National Hunt” Maiden Hurdle. A mightily impressive winner of a Sandown bumper on rules debut last term for Ben Pauling, the five-yearold was runner-up on stable and hurdles debut for Fergal O’Brien at Stratford last time out and should improve for this step up in trip. Both Lawrenny, a Newcastle bumper winner, and Royal Rambler, the son of a Grade 1-winning French mare, appeal as contenders on their hurdles debut here.
The Venetia Williams yard remains in red-hot form and winning hurdler Jikala makes her chase debut in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Handicap Chase, although must overcome an almost 600day absence. Chief amongst her rivals are Harriet Dickin’s Williamdeconqueror who, despite yet to score over fences, has finished in the top three in all of his last four starts and the top-
weighted Pearl Island for Henry Daly, who appeals as the type to improve for the switch to fences this season.
Fellow mare Harkangel was just a couple of lengths behind that rival on chase debut last time and should improve for the experience with Sean Bowen now in the saddle.
Seven-year-old mare Shesupincourt has dropped back down to her last winning hurdles mark and should appreciate a return to easier ground
Chris Gordon’s David’s Well is likely to be popular on chase debut in the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap Chase having finished fifth in a strong Newbury novice hurdle back in February before leaving a taking impression when cantering to a 14-length success in a Plumpton novice hurdle. The fiveyear-old is the least exposed in the field and holds plenty of scope for improvement.
Ben Pauling’s Samazul improved leaps and bounds for the switch to larger obstacles when a good winner on chase debut at Fontwell on return but must bounce back from a below-par effort back at that track last time.
The Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap Hurdle sees course and distance winner One Eye
On Vegas return to Leicester for the first time since a victory in a novices’ handicap hurdle in January. Stuart Edmunds’ sevenyear-old backed that up with a victory at Hereford and signed off with a good fourth at Ayr – he should come forward for a couple of lowkey efforts this season. The top weighted Benassi looked in need of the run when pulled up in a strong Bangor contest last time and is in the right hands to bounce back in first-time cheekpieces, whilst the form of Storming Nelson’s Exeter victory last term makes him of appeal from a sliding mark. Warren Greatrex’s point
winner Shantwopointfive was last seen surging clear to an impressive success in a Cartmel maiden hurdle in May and an opening mark of 107 could underestimate her ability on handicap debut.
The closing contest on the card is the Weatherbys Hamilton Mares’ Handicap Hurdle and features course and distance winner Passing Kate. Matt Shepard’s seven-year-old was also a winner at Wincanton last term and should appreciate the testing conditions on the hurdles course. Jennie Candlish’s three-year-old Malinka receives plenty of weight all round from her rivals and the Cartmel winner could prove dangerous here thanks to that handy weightfor-age allowance. Amy Murphy’s Fillyfudge has scored twice on the flat this calendar year and will look to build on a good third over course and distance last time in attempting to shed her maiden tag over hurdles.

SIXMILEBRIDGE made a promising start over hurdles when second at Stratford on return and this looks an excellent opportunity for him to go one better with the longer trip sure to suit. Lawrenny was progressive in bumpers so may emerge as the biggest threat.

Provided she is ready to roll, the unexposed SHANTWOPOINTFIVE will have every chance of adding to her Cartmel maiden success when last seen in May. The form of that race is admittedly nothing special, but that doesn’t detract from that the fact that this 6-y-o is promising and she has been handed a fair-looking mark for this handicap debut. Tommie Gun looks dangerous back on deep ground, while One Eye On Vegas is third on the list ahead of Easy To Follow.
