T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEATURE
Today’s feature race will be the Virgin Bet Novices’ Handicap Chase at 2:15pm and it looks set to be a great contest. Six day’s the 2:15pm an will contest this one and Stringtoyourbow looks like the one to watch off the back of his impressive win over the fences test ba at Southwell last month Trained by Christian Williams and ridden today by Sean Quinlan, this seven-year-old appears to well last Sea have hit a patch of good form Another on a great run at the moment is the Dianne Sayer-trained Cardamon Hill. Also a D seven-year-old, this gelding comes here looking for the hattrick after first scoring at Wetherby and then scoring over a even-year-old, comes sco long trip here last month. One More Stroke is also on the shortlist for the ever-dependable duo of Donald McCain and pression and looked in need of the run on his sole start so far this term Brian Hughes though the five-year-old made no impression
JOCKEYS H TO WATCH
p after our first weekend of racing and he has three this CRAIG NICHOL is currently tied for the lead in our jockey’s championship afte nda Russell in the maiden at 1:15 and the former points winner afternoon. The pick of the bunch looks to be Jet To Vegas for Lucinda ma at Carlisle and this could be the moment he gets that first win. He also rides has looked bright so far this term, twice a runner-up mo Delta in the day’s final race BRIAN HUGHES must always be watched here at Musselbugh and last time out winner Okavango race. alw he has another strong book of six rides here today He rides Wind Of Winter in the 1:45, who while yet to score this term, has been coming close and may be a dark horse in that race. One More Stroke in the 2:15 will be the standout though. se t
TRAINERS TO WATCH
LUCINDA RUSSELL is the trainer to follow here at Musselburgh at the moment and today is unlikely to prove any different. She saddles four today with Jet To Vegas in the 1:15, Monochromix in the 2:15, Prince Of Perth in the 2:45 and Return Fire in the 3:15 who is looking to continue his great form after a great win at Hexham and a strong third here last month. DONALD MCCAIN is another to follow here and he has two today. Kadjar Des Mottes runs in the 1:15 and is a former points winner who has shown promise under rules so far while the aforementioned One More Stroke scored a double earlier this year and while he made little impression on his sole start this term, he should come on better for that run in the 2:15 today

THE LIVESCORE BET MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
2.15 THE VIRGIN BET NOVICES’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE
2.45 THE VIRGIN BET DAILY EXTRA PLACES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE
This is a two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged between four and six-years-old in this two mile, three and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for mares aged four-years-old and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.
This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb
This two mile, three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
3.15 THE VIRGIN BET DAILY PRICE BOOSTS HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE
Our finale this afternoon is a two miles, seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-100. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

PLACING A BET
HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING
RACING.
2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
