STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that. 3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s day’s feature race will be the Virgin Bet Auld Reekie Handicap Chase at 2.20pm. Leading course trainer Lucindaa Russell has two declared in this race and they come in the form oof Corrigeen Rock, who is the highest rated runner nner in this contest, and Indian Louis as she aims to extend her lead on the leaderboard. She’s closely followed wed by Rebecca Menzies who is just one behind and she also has tw two declared with Boomslang and High Moon. Boomslang has been in fine form this season, with figures of 21 2121 and he’ll be aiming to notch a third win this term. Another in good form is the Paul Nicholls-trained Beau Balko who has started this season with form figures of 3122.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H BRIAN HUGHES is always one to watch at a northern jump umps meeting and he has six strong rides today. He is set to ride Spartan Warrior, Winds Of Winter, Ballygeary, Half Shot, Community Rebel and Ravenscraig Castle. JAMIE HAMILTON hass been in excellent form rec recently, operating at a 28% strike rate for the past fortnight. He’s set for three rides, with those on Mapl Maple in the opener, Benefit Ben in the second race of the day and then Giveupyerauldsins in the penultima penultimate race of the day.

TRAINERS TO WATCH As mentioned, leading course trainer LUCINDA RUSSELL has two declared in the feature race. She also has five others declared across the card. REBECCA MENZIES will be aiming to take top spot and she has an excellent chance to do so with five set to run today. JAMES OWEN has enjoyed a good run recently, with a 20% strike rate over the past two weeks and he is set to run just the one today and that comes in the form of Sweet Fantasy in the 1.45.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:35 THE HENRY BOCIAN JUVENILE HURDLE RACE Juvenile races are designed in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two mile hurdle race is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 3lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the how many races which they won – a winner of a hurdle race - 7lb, winner of two hurdle races - 12lb.

1.10 THE VIRGIN BET DAILY PRICE BOOSTS NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and four and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards which are rated between 0-100.

1:45 THE LIVESCORE BET BEST ODDS DAILY HOGMANEIGH HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.20 THE VIRGIN BET AULD REEKIE HANDICAP CHASE This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

2.55 THE LIVESCORE BET HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

3.30 THE VIRGIN BET DAILY EXTRA PLACES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This two mile handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

JOHNNY RINGO can confirm November’s C&D superiority over Spartan Warrior and make it second time lucky over hurdles. The fact that Cracker Star went off an even-money favourite on his hurdle debut suggests he’s thought capable of better than he showed on that occasion.

PLAY SMARTER

Cases can be made for most, but the vote goes to OKAVANGO DELTA, who won over C&D in November and ran at least as well in defeat from a 6lb higher mark when finding just one too strong back over further here last month. Winds of Winter has finished runner-up on 3 of her 4 starts since joining Iain Jardine, so she heads up the opposition on chase debut, with Divas Doyen taken to edge out Shadows In The Sky for third.
