How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Race Summary: LIAM SWAGGER has looked a good prospect since having his attentions switched to hurdling and can go 3-3 and continue the fine form of James Owen. Paul Nicholls’ French recruit Miss Altea Blue has some fairly useful form to her name and rates the chief threat, although the selection’s stablemate Kinetic also commands plenty of respect on her hurdling bow.

Race Summary: It will be an ominous sign for his rivals if NATIVEHILL is strong in the betting ahead of this Rules debut. The 6-y-o was last seen winning a maiden point in April 2023 but he’s unlikely to be found wanting fitness-wise and is certainly bred for the job. Fellow point winner Buckna made a positive start in this sphere at Ffos Las and, with the promise of better to come now upped in trip, he looks a big threat. Betting Forecast: 13-8 Javert Allen (FR), 9-4 General Medrano (IRE), 11-2 Bourbali (FR), 8-1 Primoz (IRE), 12-1 Harper’s Brook (IRE)

Race Summary: JAVERT ALLEN looked a natural over fences on his first run for the best part of a year at Chepstow and, with the promise of better to come from this lightly-raced 5-y-o, he is taken to make it 2-2 in this sphere. General Medrano won as he liked over C&D recently and a 10lb rise may not be enough to prevent another bold show from Emma Lavelle’s representative. Bourbali is also likely to be on the premises.

Race Summary: It’s likely that there is better to come from DENSWORTH over fences following his clear-cut Wetherby success and a 9lb rise may not be enough to stop him in his tracks. Beau Balko bumped into an improved model in General Medrano (runs in the 2.25 on this card) over this C&D last time and he is feared most ahead of The Edgar Wallace.
