THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
A warm welcome to the July Course on what will be a Moët & Chandon July Festival unlike any we’ve seen before. We arrive on this course a month later than initially planned, but given the challenges our industry and the whole of the UK have had to overcome we’re all relieved and delighted to be here, about to deliver three days of world-class racing. The month of June saw us host 11 days of racing safely behind closed doors at the Rowley Mile, including the first ever four-day QIPCO Guineas Festival, which was only possible thanks to the hard work of so many. Over the next three days, some of the most famous names in the sport of horseracing will descend on this prestigious venue to compete in some of the most significant races of the summer. From the sprint superstars set to contest Saturday’s Darley July Cup, to the fabulous fillies fighting for Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes glory on Friday, there is an abundance of racing action to enjoy this week. With so many of our usual racegoers unable to join us in person, we’re pleased to have the support of ITV Racing, who will be on the main ITV channel on Saturday, alongside Racing TV, giving spectators at home a vital way to stay involved. This, coupled with a wealth of content on our website and social media channels over the next three days including a Virtual Style Awards, the first ever Floral Awards, Apres Racing Spotify playlists, race replays and much more, means that hopefully the spirit of the July Festival will be recreated in homes across East Anglia, the UK and indeed around the world. My thanks must go to our sponsors this week: Moët & Chandon, Bahrain, Tattersalls, bet365 and the British EBF for their backing of today’s card and their ongoing support. All that remains is for me to wish all horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck. We look forward to welcoming them, and all of you, back to the Home of Horseracing very soon. Until then, I hope you all stay safe and well. Best wishes SOPHIE ABLE General Manager
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - TOMORROW FRIDAY 10 JULY THE MOËT & CHANDON JULY FESTIVAL - Day 2 The action continues with eight races highlighted by the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes over one mile for fillies aged three-years-old and upwards and the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Sponsored by bet365) for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs.

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO BE NAMED ‘BEST DRESSED’ IN OUR VIRTUAL STYLE AWARDS? Could you be Newmarket’s Best Dressed? Though the physical competition has been cancelled by Covid-19, we’re delighted that the Moët & Chandon July Festival Style Awards are still going ahead virtually. Instead of dressing up and having a great day out, we want you to dress up and have a great day in, as The Jockey Club’s Michelle Anderson explains. “We want people to recreate the July Festival experience at home,” she says. “Make a picnic to have in the garden, meet up with friends via video call or socially distanced get-together, put the racing on the TV - and, of course, get dressed up for the occasion.” “We know how much racegoers love taking part in the Style Awards: we see them pull out all the stops every year in their thousands,” adds Velvet editor Alice Ryan. “Though this year will be different, we’re hoping people will still get into the spirit and dress to impress at home. After three months of lockdown, I think we’re all ready to switch our jogging bottoms and trainers for a dress and heels! This is the perfect opportunity.” Throughout the three days of the festival, July 9 to 11, judges will be looking for their Best Dressed virtual racegoer. With some brilliant prizes on offer - the overall winner will receive a beauty bundle worth £400, with two runner-up prizes worth £50 also up for grabs - instead of having the usual categories, for ladies, gentlemen and couples, there’s a single Best Dressed award this year, open to everyone. Taking part is easy: simply take a picture of yourself in your race-day finery and share it on Instagram, using #StyleAwards and tagging both @velvetmag and @newmarket_racecourses. On the final day of the awards, the panel will compile a top 10 from across all three days before selecting the final top three and overall winner. Milliner Rosie Rubin - whose Rosie Olivia hats are worn by both stars and Royals, including Zara Phillips and the Duchess of Cambridge - will be joining Michelle, The Jockey Club’s regional head of marketing, and Alice on the judging panel, along with influencer Laura Blair, famed for her London Fashion Girl blog and 180,000-following Instagram, @TheLauraBlair. As ever, points will be awarded for a pulled-together look which both nods to the trends and expresses a personal style, but there are no hard-and-fast dressing rules. “The dress code is ‘up’,” adds Alice. “Just dress as you would for a real day at the races.”

RECREATE NEWMARKET’S JULY COURSE IN YOUR GARDEN The Moët & Chandon July Festival is known for its vibrant fl oral displays, almost as much as for its fashion, dining and of course Flat racing. And although this year the festival takes place behind closed doors that doesn’t mean a July Festival experience is completely out of reach. Newmarket Racecourses have launched the July Festival Floral Awards to encourage green-fingered entrants to submit photos of the flowers they’re growing at home. Entrants are invited to submit photos of their planted floral displays at home, whether an entire flower bed or a simple window box. Entries open on Thursday 9 July and you have until 2pm on Saturday 11 July to upload your entry. Taking part is easy: simply take a picture of the floral display you’re growing in your garden, pots or window box and share it on Instagram with a brief explanation of what you’ve created, using #FloralAwards and tagging both @tomhoblyn and @newmarket_racecourses. Our judge, Tom Hoblyn, will select his Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze winners, each of whom will receive prizes courtesy of Moët & Chandon to enjoy at home. Tom, who runs Thomas Hoblyn Garden Design from a 400 year old converted barn in rural Suffolk is an established figure at both RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court having won three gold, four silver gilt and two silver medals. Points will be awarded for impact, originality, overall impression and quality of planting. Top Tips: Tom Hoblyn shares some advice on creating award-winning floral displays. DO: Let us know why you made the decisions you did with your planting. I’ll be judging on both the photo and your brief, and of course how well the two have come together DON’T: be shy. I’ll be looking for ambition and theatre – so show off your creative skills DON’T: think the competition is for professionals only. If you love what you’ve created and it brings you joy to look at it, share it with us!

Following a commanding victory on reappearance, MAYDANNY “won” on his side in the Hunt Cup consolation at Ascot having been drawn away from the main action. That performance gives every indication that his current mark is a lenient one. Almufti finished fourth in that contest and he can remain competitive, while Lawn Ranger could be dangerous if allowed too much rope.

MEDIAN & RECORD TIME
SIR HENRY CECIL
The fourth race on today’s card honours the memory of the late Sir Henry Cecil, a much-missed Newmarket resident and towering member of the racing community. Sir Henry passed away in June 2013 following an inspirational battle with cancer that coincided with the zenith of his life as a trainer, when he oversaw the remarkable career of the undefeated Frankel, arguably the greatest racehorse ever to have graced the turf. Frankel was his fabulous finale but Sir Henry’s legacy as a master trainer had already been secured thanks to his previous exploits in training household names like Oh So Sharp, Slip Anchor and Bosra Sham to name but three. In total, he plundered 25 British Classics, including nine here at Newmarket, with Frankel’s awesome display of power in the 2011 QIPCO 2000 Guineas surely the most memorable. Having trained out of Warren Place, Sir Henry was an iconic figure, synonymous with Newmarket’s world famous Warren Hill and the loss of his presence and wisdom continues to be felt in our town. Tony Rushmer, author of the recently published ‘The Triumph of Henry Cecil: The Authorised Biography’ and who spent seven years working for Sir Henry, recalls feeling in awe of the trainer during his time with him. “He was always someone I admired, long before the opportunity arose to venture inside Warren Place,” Rushmer recalls. “There was just this aura around him, even when things weren’t going so well. “When he trained his horses he would tend to walk away from the rest of us and you could see how focused he was as they came by. He’d be in the zone. And that would continue as we jumped back into the car when he’d be running through his mind what he’d just seen. The excitement was just bubbling through him – ‘The grey colt, he could be very good, couldn’t he? He has really settled down now, you know?’ I’d just sit there and listen and was fascinated by everything that unfolded on those mornings.” Newmarket Racecourses is proud to ensure Sir Henry Cecil’s legacy is remembered and will continue to ensure generations of racegoers to come know of his immense contribution to our sport.

There was a thrilling finish to last year’s renewal with only a neck separating the first three. The oddson favourite Visinari looked to have the race in the bag but was headed in the final strides by the winner ROYAL LYTHAM and the runner-up Platinum Star. A winner on his debut at Navan, Royal Lytham had run repsectably in defeat when finishing 7th in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on his next start. Despite this, the colt by Gleneagles was sent off at the generous odds of 11/1 - good value for horse trained by the Master of Ballydoyle.
TACTICAL provided HM The Queen with a Royal Ascot winner when landing the Windsor Castle Stakes with plenty of authority. Aidan O’Brien also looks to hold a strong hand.

PLAY SMARTER
SWISS ACE won only an ordinary race on debut, but he skipped clear in the final furlong in the manner of one who looks capable of making his mark at this higher level, so he’s put forward as the answer. Qaader is a big player on form on the back of his second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, as is Tactical, who landed the Windsor Castle with a bit up his sleeve.

Having won the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes earlier in the season, Communique faced a stiff task giving weight away to each of his five rivals - including the 2018 Derby winner and odds-on favourite Masar. Always handy on the shirt-tails of the early leader, the Mark Johnston trained colt got first run and soon had all of his rivals playing catch up. But the result never looked in question as he galloped on strongly to the line to win by just under two lengths from Mirage Dancer with Masar trailing in a disappointing last of the six runners.
The triple-Group 2 winner ENBIHAAR progressed from run-to-run last season so should go well on her seasonal debut.

Emergency Procedures
Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
