The G1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes The feature of Future Champions’ Day
Saturday, 10th October, 2020 Official racecard
Dubawi already has four descendants who’ve sired a G1 winner — plus the amazing young stallion Night Of Thunder. All good news for his highest-rated son at stud: the record-breaking European Champion Postponed . His first-crop yearlings are at the sales.
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to the second day of the 2020 Dubai Future Champions Festival, one of the great days in the calendar at the Home of Horseracing. Whether you are with us at the Rowley Mile today or following the action from home, there is so much to look forward to, not least the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, a race rich with history and prestige and one with significant consequences for the future. Today’s winner has every chance of being crowned Europe’s Champion Two-YearOld Colt, a feat in itself which almost certainly secures a career at stud once his racing days are over. Furthermore, he would be among the leading chances for next spring’s QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and plenty of races beyond, leaving all associated with him with so much to look forward to over the winter. Unquestioned superstars have won this race en route to glory, not least the mighty Frankel, whose achievements at stud are living up to his exploits on the track. Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud, meanwhile, is now home to Too Darn Hot, the 2018 winner; he is one of a number of stallions littered throughout the roll of honour. Today’s card also includes the Together For Racing International Cesarewitch, one of the great Heritage Handicaps of the British Flat season. The race famously crosses the border from Cambridgeshire into Suffolk and is beloved by racing’s participants and punters alike as a true test of form study and race planning. My thanks go to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Godolphin for their continued support of this meeting and to Emirates for their sponsorship of the Autumn Stakes. We are also grateful to Al Basti Equiworld for their support of our Owners facilities. My colleagues here at Newmarket also deserve great praise. Their dedication and hard work have ensured we are able to provide a safe and healthy environment for the participants and provide thrilling entertainment for those watching on from afar. I wish all horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck. I hope you all stay safe and well. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

First Race
An interesting nursery with SERIES OF DREAMS receiving the vote. George Boughey’s charge found Group 3 company too hot last time but had previously been shaping up well and should be well suited by this step to 7f on nursery debut. Ralph Beckett won this race last year and Zoffarelli ought to go well for the stable this time around, while Tawaareq has the pedigree to be much better than this grade
THE NEWMARKET GOLD SEASON
The penultimate fixture of the Newmarket Gold Season saw a competitive day of racing, featuring the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes. Godolphin's Mystical Dawn landed the opening race, shedding his maiden tag at the first time of asking over a mile. This was a performance full of promise, and the son of Sea The Stars is bred to be a top prospect. The first highlight of the day came with Just Frank's demolition win in the ÂŁ150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes. The Les Eyre-trained son of Epaulette made all the running in fine style to win the valuable contest by a margin of four and a half lengths. The 27-strong field was made up of classy two-year-olds, but it was Lewis Edmunds who stole the race with a fine ride aboard the bold front runner. Iconic Choice sprung a surprise in the British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap, seeing off the talented Be More by half a length for the top team of Tom Dascombe and Martin Harley. The feature race of the day, the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes saw a tremendous field assemble for the Group 1 highlight. Irish raider Champers Elysees faced a tough task in backing up her prior Group 1 win, with 2019 winner Billesdon Brook, multiple Group 1 winner Veracious, Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Peaceful and QIPCO 1,000 Guineas runner up Cloak Of Spirits all lining up in the race. The latter fared best of the mentioned group, but it was Falmouth winner Nazeef who came out on top under Jim Crowley, seeing off French raider Half Light by a length and a half back in second. Oisin Murphy and Hughie Morrision teamed up to win the next race with Urban Artist, with the promising Existent getting his first win by a widening margin of six lengths in the next race. Georgia Dobie and Tom Clover got their names on the scoresheet in the final race, winning with Hunni.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR During The Newmarket Gold Season, we like to talk about the fact we stage fixtures that are simply unmissable thanks to the number of horses destined for great things who line up here. So with the 2020 Dubai Future Champions Festival upon us, let’s wind the clock back 12 months to demonstrate what exactly we mean.
LOVE IT Given more suitable weather conditions in Paris in recent weeks, we could easily have been hailing Love as the latest superstar three-yearold filly to win the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Rain robbed us of that spectacle but there can be no denying Love’s brilliance this season. She was an authoritative winner of the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas and backed that up with more superb displays in the Oaks at Epsom and Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York. More international options could be explored with Love before the year is out but where was she this time last year? You could find her competing in the bet365 Fillies’ Mile at the Home of Horseracing, teeing up her Classic campaign with a third-placed finish.
LOGAN’S ROYAL CLUE AND OTHER DAY ONE GEMS On the same day as Love’s run, Newmarket’s John Gosden sent out Fanny Logan to win the concluding Darley Pride Stakes. Now, she has a Royal Ascot win on her CV having returned this summer to take the Hardwicke Stakes. Elsewhere, Rose Of Kildare won the Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes and added the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes during a busy campaign at a high level this season. In the opening Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes, Lazuli was beaten but has Listed and Group 3 wins on his CV today, proving that it is not only the winning and placed youngsters who have tremendous potential; these are fields deep on quality that racing fans will be looking back at for many months to come.
WHAT OF PINATUBO? With his win in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes last year, Pinatubo completed a remarkable juvenile campaign that saw him earn the highest rating for a juvenile colt in a generation. While it was not to be when it came to the subsequent QIPCO 2,000 Guineas (albeit third is not to be sniffed at), Pinatubo has added a Group 1 at three in the Qatar Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, further adding to the excitement surrounding his subsequent stallion career. His Darley Dewhurst Stakes was stacked with quality, with Wichita, second in the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas, taking third. A Group 2 winner at Doncaster last month, he recently landed in Australia as he prepares to tackle the Melbourne Spring Carnival for the Ballydoyle team.
AUTUMN STAKES, SUMMER POINTERS In the same day’s Dubai Autumn Stakes, Military March came out on top en route to a QIPCO 2,000 Guineas fourth, sadly the only run of a campaign that surely would have wielded more. He defeated fellow Godolphin talent Al Suhail that day and while he was well held in the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas, he bounced back to land the Listed Bahrain International Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at the July Course this summer. Molatham was the beaten favourite in Military March’s race last year but put in an excellent performance at Royal Ascot in June to land the Jersey Stakes. There are many more examples of horses who have proven to be stars for their connections and followers having raced at this meeting a year ago, and indeed those from years prior whom we got to know at this end-of-season showpiece. This weekend’s races will be watched over and over when thoughts turn to the biggest prizes on offer around the world in 2021 and beyond, so enjoy it and make sure your notebook is never too far away.
Silky Smooth At Prestige we will ensure purchasing your next car is as smooth as silk. Simply choose from our existing stock or tell us what you’re looking for, new or used, and we will source accordingly.

PLAY SMARTER
Very soft ground would be a concern for VAN GOGH but he does act with ease underfoot and certainly has the strongest form on offer, so he looks the percentage call in an intriguing race. Charlie Appleby’s pair One Ruler and Dhahabi are both sure to make their presence felt now they step up to 1m, while Megallan shouldn’t be underestimated either with a good test of stamina on the cards for him.

DARLEY SUCCESS IN EU PREMIER JUVENILE CO The Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes is Europe’s premier juvenile contest and the Darley stallions have a rich history in Newmarket’s fabled contest over a straight seven furlongs. Timeform assess that five of the best six victors this century either stood, stand, or will stand under Darley’s European stallion banner. The great Shamardal, winner of the 2004 renewal, sadly passed away this year but his legacy will continue for generations to come. He sired the winner last season, the peerless European Champion Pinatubo, and when he joins the Darley stallion ranks, he will stand alongside Shamardal’s grandson Belardo, who was victorious for Roger Varian in 2014. Belardo’s first runners have hit the track in 2020 and with two Group-winning fillies and four Stakes performers by the end of September, he is outperforming his own sire Lope de Vega, Shamardal himself, and also his greatgrandsire Giant’s Causeway at the same point in their illustrious careers. Teofilo and New Approach, both sons of Galileo, won the race in 2006 and 2007 respectively on their way to being crowned European Champion juveniles. Each would go onto sire a winner of the race; 2011 hero Parish Hall for Teofilo and fellow European Champion Dawn Approach for New Approach in 2012.
UROPE’S ONTEST Dubawi is the best stallion to ever stand in Great Britain and in 2018 his Champion son Too Darn Hot thrilled the crowds when recording a near three-length triumph. Beating a future Commonwealth Cup winner and a future Derby hero into second and third that day, Timeform gave him a 127 race rating - the best of any winner this century. He handled his first race on the Rowley Mile perfectly, travelling well and showing the same potent turn of foot that had put previous races at Ascot, Goodwood and the Curragh to bed instantly. Buick was at his finest aboard the son of Shamardal, keeping his mount up to his work to maintain his unbeaten record. His three-year-old season has seen tremendous consistency. Third in the 2,000 Guineas, second at Royal Ascot and a winner in France, Pinatubo has been a remarkable colt.

For THUNDER MOON to recover from trouble in-running to land the National Stakes in such a convincing manner on just his second career outing marks him down as a really classy colt, so he’s the obvious choice to add a second top-level success to his CV. TOGETHER FOR RACING INTERNATIONAL – CONNECTING THE WORLD TO THE RACEHORSE Together for Racing International (TFRI) is an organisation to promote education, community engagement and career opportunities that connect people with the thoroughbred industry worldwide. TFRI resulted from a 2019 education forum held in Newmarket that gathered breeding, racing, and education professionals from the UK, Ireland, France, Japan, Australia and the US. At the forum, attendees collaborated to assess existing and emerging initiatives, strategise programme development and generate ideas to lower barriers to entry. The momentum created by this unifying event, along with a shared mission to promote educational opportunities, has grown into a global initiative that provides a platform and network for continuing the work. The thoroughbred is the common denominator among all racing countries, uniting us across geographic regions, cultural differences, and bridging language barriers. Together, we can propel the industry toward a healthy and sustainable future by connecting others to our most precious resource – the horse.

PLAY SMARTER
Jumps trainers have a fine record in this and David Pipe has strong claims with LEONCAVALLO, who has seemingly been saved for this after winning impressively at Haydock and sneaks in towards the foot of the weights. Great White Shark flopped in this last term but was in fine form at the Galway Festival and could be an improved model this year, so she is feared along with improving 3-y-o Coltrane.

HIGHEST GROUND continued the theme of race-by-race progress and possibly found residual greenness catching him out when a narrow second in the Dante at York in July. Open to further improvement, he can land this on his way to better things. 4-y-o Epic Hero is better than he showed at Sandown and is feared along with Posted, whilst Darain remains with potential for John Gosden.

The British Horseracing Authority will amend paragraphs 28 to 32 of the Weights and Handicapping Code and the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entries Code in the event that raising of the weights at the 24-hour stage proves necessary. This race will be restricted to 34 runners plus two reserves. The two reserves will be nominated as R35 and R36. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which has been published in The Racing Calendar and which also appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www.racingadmin. co.uk. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The Racecourse Executive will pay a travel allowance of £400 to any reserve that travels to the course on the day prior to this race, but which subsequently fails to take the place of a declared runner. For the avoidance of doubt, such payments will only be made to any such reserve which would reasonably be expected to travel on the day prior to the race and, thus, for which it would be necessary to begin the journey to the course before the deadline for a reserve to replace a non-runner has passed, i.e., 1.00 p.m. on Friday, October 9th. Trainers seeking to claim this allowance must seek prior confirmation from the Racecourse Executive before commencing the journey. The British Horseracing Authority has modified the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entry Code and the Division of Races section of the Race Administration Code for the purposes of this race.
