Official BHA Rating
STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST MEETING REVIEW | SUNDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2020

1
Our penultimate meeting of the season saw some high-class action on the track as the eight-race card featured a pair of Class 2 events, including the Aubrey Loze Memorial Intermediate Chase. The feature chase saw the front-two in the market battle out the finish and it was Al Dancer who came out on top for the father and son combination of Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies. The grey had been competing in Graded races as a novice chaser last season, including a fifth-place finish in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival, and he got his 2020/21 season off to the perfect start here. The seven-year-old was sent off as the second favourite behind the Paul Nicholls-trained Master Tommytucker for his seasonal reappearance, but he
5
enjoyed the step-up in trip as he saw off the market leader by two-and three-quarter lengths. 6
The following Class 2 hurdle race, the William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker Handicap, went the way of the favourite as Sammylou continued his fine record over course and distance this season. Campaigned during the summer by Graeme McPherson, the seven-year-old was making his fifth start here since July and he added a third victory his name as he took the step-up in grade in his stride. He is developing a good partnership with Lilly Pinchin, who was making it back-to-back wins onboard the gelding as she again judged her hold-up tactics to perfection.
newtonabbotracing.com
Sammylou was produced from the rear of the field to win by a length and a quarter from Emma Lavelle’s 2019 Ladbrokes Trophy winner De Rasher Counter. We also saw some useful novices on show as the afternoon started with two divisions of the British Stallion Studs EBF “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle. In the opening race, Flic On Voyou made all under Harry Cobden to follow-up his success at Chepstow only two days earlier. The six-year-old had been a decent performer in bumpers back in 2018/19, running in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, and he could now kick on over hurdles for Paul Nicholls having had wind surgery during the summer. In Division Two of the race, Press Your Luck made a winning debut over hurdles for the trainer and jockey combination of Chris Gordon and Tom Cannon. A winner of an Irish point over three miles last year, the five-year-old could be one to follow with further progress to come as he steps up in distance. In the novice contest over the bigger obstacles later in the card, the Follow@ WillHillRacing On Twitter Novices’ Chase,
Eldorado Allen showed his potential over fences as he made a successful chase debut for Colin Tizzard. He had looked an exciting prospect when making a winning start over hurdles back in November 2018, but unfortunately his campaign was cut short by injury and he was not seen again until the beginning of this year. The sixyear-old took well to fences though after his summer break, jumping nicely apart from a mistake at the last which was not enough to stop him winning by two lengths under Robbie Power. Elsewhere on the card, Jersey Bean justified favouritism in the newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Handicap Chase as he made all under Brendan Powell. Trained by Oliver Sherwood, the seven-year-old built on his reappearance third at Uttoxeter to keep finding more and repel the challenge of his rivals by two-lengths. There was an upset in the following Brendon Soper Memorial Handicap Hurdle as Sastruga won at odds of 40/1 on his stable debut for Richard Hawker. The seven-year-old was upped in trip for his first start since March and travelled comfortably under Robert Dunne before staying on to score by a length. In the closing William Hill TV Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, put his previous bumper form to good use as the five-year-old won on his third start for Neil King, benefitting from a positive ride by Byrony Frost as he was not for catching once kicking clear down the home straight. This looks a useful handicap and MILLE SUSSURRI is chanced to open his account on his return.
