SUNDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2024
Official race programme £3.00
We trust you have all had a good Summer and looking forward to returning back to Plumpton, a course that is at the Heart Of The Community.
Over the summer we have been busy here at Plumpton and there have been plenty of changes. We have a new trot up facility, installed solar panels on both our Sussex Stand and the roofs on the Weighing Room, improved our accessibility with a new disabled toilet and undercover parade ring viewing platform, continued with course drainage improvements and improved our wayfinding around site. These changes just go to show the continued investment and support from our owners Peter Savill and Adrian Pratt.
Today we have 45 runners going to post over 6 races with £59,750 of prize-money on offer. Ourfeatureonthetracktodayisourfourthracethe£17,500TheFriendsandFamilyRemembering Norman Sharpe Handicap Hurdle which was won by Our Champ last year beating Hiconic by 6 lengths. Our Champ was also successful in winning the Sussex Champion Hurdle at our Easter meeting earlier in the year. The renewal this year looks strong with eight going to post including Aucunrisque who won our Sussex Champion Hurdle in 2022.
I would like to thank our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Oakleaf Builders, Weatherbys, Friends of Peter Mellett, Friends and Family of Norman Sharpe and Friends and Family of Peter Taylor. We wish you all have a tremendous day.
Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton. During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat.
It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open, with all Family Entertainment located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access. Entertainment will include a Climbing Wall, Petting Farm, Face Painting, Jurassic Playground, Donkey Rides, 90ft Obstacle course, face painting, fun fair and of course Teddy the Shetland. We have a map detailing all our activities in the racecard so please take a look. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 6 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day.
Looking ahead we have five racedays before Christmas, so make sure you book early to take advantage of our best priced tickets. Christmas is always in high demand, so if you are thinking of booking hospitality for either the 2nd or 16th December make sure you contact our team now, not to miss out.
Have a great day.

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins
Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.
Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.
Chase - A race run over fences.
Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.
Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.
Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.
Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.
Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.
Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race
Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.
Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.
Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race
Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.
DAMEOFTHECOTSWOLDS continues to find a few too strong, but Nigel Twiston-Davies’ filly will not get a better opportunity to get off the mark. It was one of her better efforts when second at Worcester earlier this month and while a few of these have a bit to prove, a similar level of performance might suffice. Zarhanya and Brave Jen are others to consider.
totewin: Dameofthecotswolds
toteeachway: Zarhanya
BELGARUM could hardly have been more impressive when bolting up over an extended 2m5f at Fontwell last month. Joe Tizzard’s gelding isn’t fully exposed over the larger obstacles, so a 10lb hike looks manageable. Invictus De Brion finished well behind in third that day, but is 11lb better off now and first-time cheekpieces could spark some improvement. Almost Gotaway is also noted.
totewin: Belgarum
toteeachway: Invictus De Brion
Character Testing was the highest rated of these on the Flat and finished a respectable third on his hurdles/stable bow at Fontwell last month. He can progress now, but it is ROGUE KING that shades preference. In decent form on the level, he filled the runner-up spot over timber at Stratford in July and is the one to beat on that evidence. Gary and Josh Moore often do well around here, so Our Papa Smurf warrants a market check.
totewin: Rogue King
toteeachway: Character Testing
KING’S CASTLE’s sparkling run of form was halted possibly momentarily when taking the silver medal home at Perth on his latest outing. Prior to that display, he recorded four victories in a row and the seven-year-old may not have finished his progression just yet. Rewired failed to land a blow in a warmer event last time, but he could get closer off a 1lb lower mark. Of the remainder, Donnie Azoff makes the most appeal after his fifth at Worcester.
totewin: King’s Castle
toteeachway: Rewired
Stormin Crossgales was denied by two lengths into second in this grade at Market Rasen in June and he should go well off a 6lb higher rating. However, it may pay to side with ALIEN STORM, who has run well off higher marks over hurdles and the son of Getaway might prove a different proposition over fences. Last-time-out winner Kauto The King is another to consider.
totewin: Alien Storm
toteeachway: Stormin Crossgales
Greatness Awaits has filled the top two places on his last three outings and is expected to give a good account off 2lb higher than his most recent second at Market Rasen. However, the step up in trip might be a negative and, with that in mind, THE DARK EDGE gets the nod. The five-yearold took a step in the right direction to fill the runner-up spot on handicap debut at Huntingdon in April and he could be the one to beat off only a 1lb higher mark. Sami Bear completes the shortlist.

A reproduction of the form DAMEOFTHECOTSWOLDS showed when second at Worcester recently will probably be good enough to see her get off the mark. ROGUE KING has been in good form since the application of a visor, showing promise when runner-up at Stratford on his hurdling debut in July, so he is taken to go one better this time around. Character Testing also has the benefit of hurdling experience and could be the biggest threat, ahead of Little Venice.

“FALLING AT THE LAST WHEN IN FRONT”
It is now over 9 years since Norman died suddenly at only 54 years of age. The strength of affection for Norman is underlined by the fact that for the 6th time around 50 of his friends and family are gathering at Plumpton racecourse to sponsor a race in his name and to reminisce.
It is an appropriate memorial as he loved horse racing and put simply, loved a laugh with friends and family. He regularly attended Plumpton in his late teens and then Ascot, Sandown, Kempton and Epsom, whilst living in London. The Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp also became a must-do, attending 27 times from 1984.
Norman (or “Norm”) was born in Edinburgh in 1961. He was a proud Scotsman and a keen sportsman. Supporting Scotland and Hibs produced few victory celebrations but the (many) near misses were still enjoyed.
Norman was also very much a man of Sussex. His parents moved the family south in 1971 and they still live in Cuckfield today. His teenage years were in Haywards Heath attending the local Grammar School and 6th form. He represented the county and South of England at rugby, also played for Felbridge (Juniors) and later London Scottish before an injury prevented further potential progression.
Norman then absorbed himself in Sussex football, playing and managing at Franklands Village for many years, although most would agree his footballing strengths were in management. His genuine desire to help individuals and his talent for creating an enjoyable team spirit, would also serve him well in his working life.
Norman attained a degree in Accountancy from Kingston Polytechnic and continued to live in South-West London for a few years after, marrying in 1988. He worked initially as an accountant, before finding his true vocation in sales within the building industry, covering 30 years with periods at Taylor-Wimpey and Persimmon.
Norman moved to Partridge Green in Sussex in the early 1990s, where he lived happily with his wife and three daughters, until his untimely passing.
For those of you reading this who didn’t know him, Norman was great company and if he was out for the day or night you wanted to be part of it. He was immensely generous, very loyal and had a wonderful sense of humour.
Norman was a very good friend, and we miss him greatly.
