BEST TURNED OUT WINNERS

MICHAEL & DAVID EASTERBY

As we head into the final day of the season we have three yards in with a chance of being crowned the 2024 Best Turned Out Leading Yard.

Last years winners Johnston Racing could well be in with a chance of collecting the award again but the Easterby yard and Karl Burke are also in with a shot of being this years champions!

As a thank you, the winners will receive a tasty treat for the whole team to enjoy!

We appreciate all the hardwork and effort all the lads and lasses put into getting their horses ready before they run at Ponte.

The winning horse will also receive a sack of carrots kindly donated by Poskitts Vegetable Farmers and Growers.

Phil Bull, the founder of Timeform, was born and brought up a few miles from Pontefract in Hemsworth. His father was a coal miner and his mother a schoolmistress. Bull himself became a teacher but his childhood fascination with racing led him to turn his mathematical skills to the analysis of race times, which he first marketed in the late-1930s under the pseudonym William K.Temple (his status as a teacher precluded him from using his own name).

Pontefract was the first racecourse to which the young Bull was taken racing by his father and years later it was also the course where he enjoyed his first winner as a racehorse owner. That was in 1942 when Bull also began producing a Best Horses annual, the forerunner of the long-running Timeform Racehorses series.

The instantly recognisable Bull, sporting a ginger beard and smoking a cigar, became the leading owner in the North and also a successful breeder. Lady Electra, one of the foundation mares of his Hollins Stud, won the Substitute Lincolnshire Handicap at Pontefract in 1943 and a painting of that victory hangs in the Pontefract directors’ dining room.

Bull was the most successful professional punter of his era, keeping meticulous records which show that he made over £11.5m from betting, at today’s values. Also an influential campaigner on racing matters, he was a man of many parts, an accomplished chess and snooker player, and a passionate fan of Mozart, while his vast home library was dominated by books on philosophy and humanism.

GENERAL HELP

If you require assistance please ask one of the Attendants, either at the Entrance where you came in or at one of the Pass Gates. If you are in the Premier or Grandstand & Paddock Enclosures you can also enquire at the Raceday Office which is next to the Winners Enclosure.

Leeds - Pontefract Tanshelf Wakefield - Monkhill

There are 3 stations in Pontefract – Monkhill, Baghill and Tanshelf. Pontefract Tanshelf is more or less opposite the entrance to the Park, whereas Monkhill and Baghill stations are more centrally located in Pontefract and are around 2 to 3 miles from the course. If you don’t fancy the walk through the Town, taxis are available at the stations.

There is a fourth station at Glasshoughton which adjoins the Xscape complex. This is a couple of miles from the Racecourse. If you have some time to kill, from near Glasshoughton Station (starting in the car park to B&Q!), there is a lovely walk through the Park to the Racecourse. It will take around 45 minutes.
