WELCOME
WELCOME TO
Dear Friends of Punchestown,
On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to day three of the 2024 Punchestown Festival We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us by joining us at the races today. We have a made a number of strategic changes to the festival this year with the aim of improving and enhancing what that the Punchestown experience has to offer which we really hope you will enjoy.
Festival Thursday is all about stamina as the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle takes centre stage on day three I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Although the season is far from over as we all gather to celebrate the biggest week of the year on the Irish Racing Calendar, with €3.5 million in prizemoney, featuring 12 Grade 1 Contests.
Today also features the famous Mongey Communications Cross Country Chase for the La Touche Cup which is one of the highlights of the year at Punchestown and a spectator favourite. Punchestown boasts the only cross-country course in Ireland, a race over four miles with 35 obstacles to be encountered it’s certainly hard to believe that this race often produces the tightest of finishes. This years renewal is also the penultimate leg of the prestigious Crystal Cup and we welcome those who have travelled for that in particular
The Goffs Punchestown Sale is scheduled to take place this evening after racing in the fitting location of the Punchestown winner’s enclosure. A select number of top bumper and point to point winners who have impressed over the last number of weeks will go under the hammer to the leading trainers, owners and bloodstock agents in the industry. It’s a fantastic spectacle and we look forward to welcoming many of them back to the winner’s enclosure at Punchestown as their careers continue
We’re thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. throughout the week who are set to renew rivalries again on Irish soil The U.K. involvement is such an integral part of our festival and we sincerely thank all trainers, owners, jockeys and racing fans for making the extra effort to travel to Punchestown. We really do hope you enjoy the experience, and we wish you every success and a safe journey home
The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!
I look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow for more exhilarating action with the Boodles Champion Hurdle the feature highlight on Day 4 with the first race going to post at 3.40pm.

RACE SUMMARY
UNDENIABLE ALIBI debuts in handicaps and has recent form. A point-to-point winner, he won a February maiden at Clonmel and then ran well when finishing third at Naas last month, form which was franked by the fourth-placed horse Rumi returned from a year off the track when winning on the Flat at Gowran His fifth-placed effort behind Irish Point in March 2023 reads very well and he’s one to note Ballycallan King won quite easily at Limerick recently but has been raised 9lb

RACE SUMMARY
In common with many high-class novices, BLOOD DESTINY is well respected on his handicap debut. His chase form is consistently strong and, although just a five-year-old, he has sufficient experience to tackle a big-field handicap like this. Path D’oroux has competed at every big festival since early December and, having performed well in similar valuable handicaps on each of his last four runs, he should again be competitive under a 5lb claimer Former County Hurdle winner Saint Roi hasn’t won since a Grade 1 success in December 2022 but did go well at Aintree latest.

TRACK ACTION
Due to the ongoing track widening project, access to the cross country course is prohibited this year. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
The Crystal Cup European Cross Country Challenge brings together the finest international horses and riders to reward the most successful stable in cross country steeple chasing.
The 11 race series, with over €815,000 in prize money, will be hosted by many of Europe’s premier racecourses, over unique combinations of hedges, banks, ditches and timber.
The Challenge began in late August at a packed Waregem Racecourse in Belgium, whilst the final race is at Lion d’Angers on May 9th following further races in France and visits to Poland, Italy and to Czechia for the Velka Pardubika.
After 9 legs, the action moves to Punchestown today during the Irish National Hunt Festival, after a thrilling race at Fontainebleau which puts the Czechs in a commanding position on the leaderboard. Bonuses worth €50,000 are still up for grabs.

RACE SUMMARY
COKO BEACH was beaten 34 lengths in the Grand National but had previously won on this cross country course in February. Suited by soft ground and a dour stayer, he can put last month’s Aintree experience to good use A 15-year-old won this race in 2022 although last year’s winner Vital Island, now aged 12, was pulled up behind the selection in that February contest and needs more. The in-form Birchdale defeated Vital Island when winning here in November and is another to bear in mind WIN: COKO BEACH EACH-WAY: VITAL ISLAND

RACE SUMMARY
GAELIC WARRIOR gained his first Cheltenham win in March and is a standout performer who is ideally suited by conditions. Everything went right for him at Cheltenham as he completely left behind his Leopardstown no-show, and he has twice comfortably defeated Il Etait Temps, form which he should confirm here. Il Etait Temps was himself a fine winner at the top level at Aintree 21 days ago and cannot be completely overlooked Hercule Du Seuil received a minor bump at the start at Aintree last month but was well held and looks most likely to finish third.

OVERVIEW
The Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham is often a pointer towards the Champion Stayers, which was first run in 1995, although the only horse to win both races is Anzum way back in 1999. Many horses with strong from over the minimum trip step up in distance to win today’s feature, so keep a keen eye on these. Willie Mullins has won the race a record 10 times, with the almighty Klassical Dream taking the previous three renewals. Derrymoyle (1995, 1996 & 1998) and Unowhatimeanharry are another pair of multiple winners of the race

KEY TRENDS
Only two winning favourites in the last 10 years
The past 13 Irish-trained winners had won at Punchestown previously
11 of the past 14 winners had won just once earlier in the season
Klassical dream wrote his name into the history book by becoming the first horse to win three back-to-back renewals in this contest. Failing to show his true colours at the Cheltenham Festival, he bounced back to form in a thrilling finish, fighting all the way to the line with stablemate Asterion Forlonge to defy favouritism. Taking a keen hold under Paul Townend, he responded generously to his riders urgings to just prevail by half a length, albeit idling on the run in. This victory gave Willie Mullins his ninth win in the past 14 renewals.
THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW
Willie Mullins will be looking to continue his dominance and he saddles just two with Monkfish and last year’s runner-up Asterion Forlonge. However, the Gordon Elliott duo of Sire Du Berlais and Teahupoo look to have stronger claims, with the former looking a very short price to complete the Cheltenham/Punchestown Stayers double Both Home By The Lee (third) and Buddy One (fourth) ran well at Cheltenham but was no match for the runaway winner and it’s hard to see the form being reversed

RACE SUMMARY
There is rain forecast for Punchestown on Thursday, but Teahupoo would really need plenty As this season’s Stayers’ Hurdle winner at Cheltenham, he is the one to beat but is swerved at a short price on forecast ground that doesn’t ideally suit him. HOME BY THE LEE was unable to get on terms with Teahupoo when third at Cheltenham, but has a shot at getting closer on this ground He has been lightly raced and could come to the boil here. Sire Du Berlais has a decent record on better ground and was third in this race last year

RACE SUMMARY
CAPTAIN CODY is up in trip and would welcome rain, but his class could see him through for Willie Mullins. He was a decisive winner of a Grade 2 novice hurdle over 2m4f at Fairyhouse at the end of March which bodes well for this assignment. Maxxum wasn’t quite done with when falling after two out in a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse latest and has his chance with Carl Millar taking 7lb off his back. Captain Cody’s stablemate O’Moore Park could respond well to the first-time hood, while Coming Up Easy hacked up in a maiden hurdle at Limerick and lurks towards the bottom of the weights for Henry de Bromhead
WIN: CAPTAIN CODY

RACE SUMMARY
SPINDLEBERRY outran her odds when a creditable runner-up in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse latest and that form gives her leading claims for Willie Mullins. Her stablemate Got Glory is certainly one to note She actually made her Irish debut in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse last year, but was pulled up after racing freely She has had her issues, but returned almost a year later to hack up in a Naas maiden last month. Me Wee Bonnie Lass is a very likeable sort who is three from four over hurdles, while British raider Casa No Mento isn’t out of it.

RACE SUMMARY
SAMYR impressed with a clear-cut success on heavy ground at Gowran Park and should improve on better ground considering he was bought to go on the Flat. Port Joulain merits automatic respect as he represents team Mullins. After his Gowran Park success in March, Willie Mullins commented that he would have been one for Cheltenham, but that he couldn’t get him ready in time. Mullins’ Cantico was eased when beaten in the Champion Bumper and could bounce back on this ground Angelo Dundee hasn’t been seen since winning a bumper on debut at the Punchestown Festival last year, but he has plenty of ability and cannot be ruled out.
