WELCOME TO

Dear Racegoer,

On behalf of all the team here at Punchestown I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to the home of Irish jump racing. Today marks the first of our jump fixtures for the 2024/2025 season and the staff have been working very hard behind the scenes to ensure the track looks impeccable!

Although five months have passed since Festival 2024 it feels as though the summer has flown by. Those months give us the opportunity to reflect on the season past, consider feedback and implement changes as we continue to improve the Punchestown customer experience. Please always feel free to let us know how your experience has been as we endeavour to do the utmost to ensure that you have an enjoyable day at the races.

We would like to welcome todays sponsors William Hill & Irish EBF Without the support of sponsors racing wouldn’t be possible and we are very thankful for their contribution both to Punchestown and racing overall

We would also like to present to you the “Punchestown Premiere Weekend” which takes place on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th November With Gr1 racing on both days, delicious food, family deals and lots of surprises in store, be sure to get your tickets in advance for the best price possible

To all the owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff we would like to wish you a successful and healthy season. As the temperatures drop, the racing action heats up and our next fixture here is tomorrow, Wednesday 16 October where the GR3 Betvictor Chase takes centre stage

Hope to see you all there!

RACE SUMMARY

A dual winner over 1m4f, SOLAR DRIVE isn’t as highly rated on the Flat as some of these but has taken well to hurdling and had Action Plan a little over two lengths back in third when landing a Ballinrobe maiden. Action Plan again ran creditably in a decent contest at Listowel on his next start. He is declared to run at Cork on Sunday but will be a major player if turning up here. Hurdling debutant Slurricane stays well, as shown when placed over 1m6f on the Flat last time in a competitive Listowel handicap WIN: SOLAR DRIVE EACH-WAY: Slurricane

RACE SUMMARY

Runner-up on his last two starts, bumper winner SINGLE EDITION can go one better and record a first success over hurdles. Nigel Slevin’s six-year-old was outstayed by a subsequent winner over a longer trip at Downpatrick before finding only Sayitfirst too strong at Roscommon. The selection is 7lb better

with the latter, who again showed her well-being when second at Fairyhouse last week. Targa Flavio was a well-held second when showing improved form at Listowel and he may improve for better ground, while handicap debutant Mount Anglesby brings solid maiden form to the table WIN: SINGLE EDITION EACH-WAY: Targa Flavio

RACE SUMMARY

PIED PIPER looks to have been found a nice opportunity to record a first win in almost two years. A genuine Grade 1 horse in his prime, the Gordon Elliott-trained six-year-old has performed with credit in decent handicaps under both codes in recent times. Fit from the Flat, the New Approach gelding should take all of the beating. Aspire Tower, who would have had a similar level of ability to the selection at his best, was off the track for almost three years prior to making his return last October Although not the force of old, the gelding looks the main threat. Course winner Eagle Fang is next best.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

RACE SUMMARY

Cork bumper winner BALLYSAX HANK can step up on his recent hurdling debut at Listowel. Runner-up on that occasion, the Brendan Duke-trained gelding should have learned enough from that experience to go one better A prominent racer, the five-year-old should appreciate returning to this venue where he previously finished fifth in a big-field bumper The Willie Mullins-trained Mister Pink looks the obvious danger Second over course and distance on hurdling debut last time, the six-year-old had won his bumper at Ballinrobe prior to that and likely has more to offer. Newcomer Ballyharney should be noted on his introduction for the in-form Adrian Murray stable WIN: BALLYSAX HANK EACH-WAY: Mister Pink

RACE RESULTS

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.

D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.

CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.

C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course

BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.

So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

RACE SUMMARY

C&D winner WARM IN GOREY has leading claims under Tiernan Power Roche Only 3lb higher than when successful here last June, the Philip Rothwell-trained gelding actually races off a lower mark once taking his jockey’s claim into account. A consistent sort in handicap chases in recent months, the six-year-old may appreciate reverting to hurdles. Glendars Mahler has to be respected on her first start for trainer Aidan Howard. Having been rated as high as 105 in the past, the eight-year-old is very interesting. Point-to-point winner Due Course is another to consider WIN: WARM IN GOREY

DID YOU KNOW

Punchestown is the only racecourse in Ireland that hosts cross-country racing over 35 obstacles styled on natural countryside fences, banks and hedges.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

RACE SUMMARY

The progressive mare ITS NOT OVER YET may be able to land her hat-trick here. She got on top in the closing stages to open her account at Tipperary in early July and won with plenty in hand when following up at Roscommon just over two weeks ago She got a 12lb hike for that but it’s often worth following a mare in form. The versatile Somptueux was fourth in a Flat maiden on his latest start and is on a competitive mark over timber He is a danger, while Cozone comes here in winning form having taken a claimer in good style at Clonmel

RACE FACTS A CLOSER LOOK 10 MUMMY DERRY (IRE) (36)

MUMMY DERRY is hard to oppose The Yeats filly lost out by three-parts of a length to a decent sort in Meitheal on her debut at Galway last month. The half-sister to Spillanes Tower looks to have been found a good opening in which to open her account. Lau And Shaz is the potential improver in the field She showed promise when seventh in the Goffs Bumper at the festival here in April That tends to be a deep race The Gordon Elliott-trained Clongorey has finished fourth on both outings over timber and could be place material in this.
