Good afternoon and welcome to the final meeting of the 2024 season at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.
It’s hard to believe that our season is coming to an end, it seems like just yesterday we were preparing for it to start. It’s great to be joined by Theakston for the return of the Theakston’s Beer Festival, head down to the Paddock Lawn to sample some of their excellent produce.
Going into our final meeting Richard Fahey leads the trainers table with nine winners across the season, Tim Easterby is on seven winners and is well represented as ever this afternoon, so it could yet get interesting! David Nolan will take plenty of catching in the jockeys table despite not being present today as he is currently on 10 winners, four ahead of David Allan on six.
Our feature race this afternoon is the Ripon Cathedral City of the Dales Handicap over six-furlongs at 3.20pm. 2019 William Hill Great St Wilfrid winner Dakota Gold is an interesting contender and so too is course specialist Fortamour, who bids for a seventh course and distance success today.
It’s great to again stage the Michael Raby Memorial, two divisions of it no less and welcome back Trevor Ingham who sponsors this race in memory of his good friend. It would be great and very fitting to see his own Mr Trevor run a big race. Thank you to all our sponsors today and throughout the season.
Our fixture list for 2025 is now confirmed and can be found on the back of this racecard as well as at ripon-races.co.uk. We hope you have a great afternoon and we look forward to seeing you again in 2025!

TODAY’S TIPS
RACE 1
DOTHAN shaped better than his finishing position suggested when fourth on debut at Chester, having attempted to chase down the winner at a crucial point. With that experience under his belt, Ed Bethell’s colt is likely to step forward on this occasion and should go well Bishopton has been gelded following his third at Ffos Las and may also appreciate a drop in trip, while I’m Next’s third at Beverley earns him a place on the shortlist.
WIN: DOTHAN
RACE 2
DANGER: LEBLON GIRL
The drop back in distance is likely to see Greek Gift in a better light with her proven form on a softer surface another positive, while Captivate and Law Degree shouldn’t be discounted. However, thevote goes to BLESSED STAR. CharlieJohnston’s fillyhas filled the runner-up spot in novice company on all three starts to date and an opening mark of 77 may underestimate her true ability on nursery debut.
WIN: BLESSED STAR
RACE
3
DANGER: GREEK GIFT
HIGH OPINION arrives searching for a fourth win from his last six starts and the five-year-old, who got the better of Our Absent Friends when the pair met here last month, is expected to come out on top once again. The latter backed up that performance by winning at Haydock on his penultimate start and has to be a leading player if in similar form. Stable companions Count D’Orsay and Albegone can fight it out for the minor honours.
WIN: HIGH OPINION
RACE 4
DANGER: OUR ABSENT FRIENDS
BALDOMERO looked back to something like his best on the soft ground at Doncaster when returning a convincing winner of a competitive sprint. The underfoot conditions remain in his favour and another bold bid is anticipated, despite a 5lb rise for that success. Secret Guest has solid claims on his third in the Great StWilfred here last month, while the veteran Dakota Gold is not easily dismissed on this surface and is preferred to Tacarib Bay.
WIN: BALDOMERO
RACE 5
DANGER: SECRET GUEST
RUN THIS WAY landed a hat-trick earlier this season and that included a couple of wins over C&D. Paul Midgley’s mare has returned to the same mark as when last successful and she can resume winning ways with the ground in her favour Recent Ayr runner-up Music Society represents last year’s winning yard and looks a threat off his current mark, while last month’s RedcarwinnerHurstwoodwon a division ofthis contest back in 2022.
WIN: RUN THIS WAY
RACE 6
DANGER: MUSIC SOCIETY
HAVANA PURSUIT was winning off a 5lb higher mark at this time last year A recent second at Hamilton suggests Tim Easterby’s inmate is primed to get his head back in front and today’s soft going is anotherpositive.ThornabyPearl is potentiallywell treated having scored offa highermark at Doncasterback in March, while MrTrevorran his best race forsome timewhen second at Catterick 18 days ago and also merits consideration.
WIN: HAVANA PURSUIT
RACE 7
DANGER: THORNABY PEARL
Creatif changed hands for €140,000 after finishing third in France last time and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the market. However, AL AMEED looks the way to go The son of Kodiac has filled the runner-up berth at Kempton the last twice and he sets the standard with a rating of 84. Lady La Fay is another to keep an eye on after her fourth at Doncaster.
WIN: ALAMEED
RACE 8
DANGER: CREATIF
Tokyo Bay has competed in much deeper contests than this on both of his handicap starts to date. He has been gelded since his most recent start and might get closer at this lower level. However, the vote goes to track-and-trip winner SPANTIK, who was beaten a length into second over this C&D last month and he has lots in his favour as he bids to go one betteroff1lb higher Last-time-outwinnerMerrijig is anotherto consider

STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
OFFICIAL BHA RATING
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a six furlongs restricted maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

MEDINILLA produced a promising first effort amidst inexperience and was noted finishing with running left when sixth in maiden company at Newbury (6f) 8 days ago. Looking a sure-fire improver with that under her belt, she can confirm the promise of that effort and make it second time lucky Dothan looks another likely improver having shaped with promise at Chester, so he’s next best ahead of Leblon Girl.

RACE DESCRIPTION
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 63 to 82 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

2023:(See Div 1)
STORMY PEARL: Following its run on 17/9/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run late-on.
TILSWORTH TURF: Following its run on 31/8/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed throughout. Betting Forecast:
7-2 Thornaby Pearl (GB), 9-2 Havana Pursuit (GB), 7-1 Oso Rapido (IRE), Mr Trevor (IRE), 8-1 Obligatory (IRE), 9-1 Stormy Pearl (GB), 10-1 Without Flaw (IRE), 11-1 Canaria Queen (GB), 28-1 Tilsworth Turf (GB)
THORNABY PEARL ran a solid race, that despite being pestered throughout on the front end, when finishing a close-up fifth over this trip at Chester 2 weeks ago. Lining up here from a career-low mark, he’s well proven on soft ground and can confirm the promise of that effort here. Havana Pursuit rates the chief threat following a good second at Hamilton earlier this week. Without Flaw and Oso Rapido also make each-way appeal.
BEST TURNED OUT HORSE
Trevor Ingham will select the best turned out horse for this race and present a trophy to winning connections.
Trevor and Sally are delighted to be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary here today whilst working at the racecourse, and are looking forward to enjoying the excellent End of Season Staff Barbecue after racing!

RACE DESCRIPTION
This contest is a Novice Stakes run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

Wishing a very happy retirement to David ‘Dollo’ Dalton.
David started as a casual worker at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse in 1973 aged just 14, operating one of the number boards in the paddock. He became full time as the Gardener’s Apprentice in 1974 and has played a big part in the winning of numerous awards, including Yorkshire in Bloom (Gold & Category wins), Ripon in Bloom (Gold & Category wins), GMA Groundstaff winners (2017).
For many years David has been responsible for the beautiful floral surroundings at Ripon. This year our Spring bedding had 4,5006,000 plants, all grown on from seed and our Summer bedding has 10-12,000 plants grown from seeds and plugs. We also have 50 hanging baskets, 80 troughs & planters, annual beds and over 80 meters of window boxes. The ‘garden’ in Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse is a testament to David’s hard work.
Enjoy your retirement, Dollo!

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
