Royal Ascot 2020 – Taking place safely behind closed doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Royal Ascot is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. All attendees at Royal Ascot will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. Field sizes have been limited to 24 at Royal Ascot to help ensure social distancing throughout the site. For more information on how racing at Royal Ascot and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

Royal Ascot - Race Histories 12.40pm
The Silver Wokingham Stakes (Handicap)
One of six races to have been added to Royal Ascot for 2020, this six-furlong contest is a consolation race for The Wokingham Stakes, presenting those who missed the cut for the big handicap later in the card with an opportunity to compete on one of racing’s greatest stages.
1.15pm
The Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)
Named in honour of the wife of George V and first run in 1921, The Queen Mary Stakes is Royal Ascot’s showcase sprint for two-year-old fillies. Lyric Fantasy, also known as ‘the Pocket Rocket’ on account of her impressive turn of foot, won the race in 1992 before going on to beat her elders in the Group 1 Nunthorpe at York later that summer. 2003 winner Attraction enjoyed notable Group 1 success the following season, winning the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Irish equivalent before returning to the Royal Meeting to land The Coronation Stakes, while American trainer Wesley Ward has won the five-furlong contest three times since 2009. In light of the fact that British racing was only able to resume earlier this month, the race has been moved from its usual slot of Wednesday this year, thus maximising the time between participants’ debut run and Royal Ascot.
1.50pm
The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
It was while following the Royal hounds in her carriage that Queen Anne came across the clearing near Windsor Castle which would become the site of Ascot Racecourse. The connection between the throne and hounds is commemorated by no fewer than seven races at Royal Ascot which are named after Masters of the Buckhounds – including the 9th Earl of Coventry. Another juvenile contest to have been moved to the final day in order to give the two-year-olds additional time between their debuts and a bid at Royal Ascot glory in 2020, The Coventry Stakes was first run in 1890 and promoted to Group 2 status in 2004. Among its most distinguished winners was the great Mill Reef, who won the race fifty years ago before going on to win the 1971 Derby, King George and Arc.
2.25 pm
The Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
First run in 1840 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria two years previously, The Coronation Stakes is for three-year-old fillies and regularly attracts horses that have run in the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. The race is usually run a day earlier but owing to the fact that the Newmarket Classic was only run on June 7th due to the suspension of British racing, it has been moved to the final day of Royal Ascot this year so as to give participating fillies a little more time between the two. The Coronation Stakes has often gone to winners of that season’s 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, the most recent filly to claim the double being Winter in 2017. One of its most notable winners was the remarkable Pretty Polly, who won 22 of her 24 races, including the fillies’ Triple Crown in 1904. Last year’s renewal saw the French-trained 20-1 shot Watch Me defeat dual Guineas winner Hermosa.
3.00pm
The St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Named after the Tudor Royal residence, the inaugural running of The St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was a walkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. The race attracts the best male milers from the Classic generation, often featuring colts that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Its roll of honour includes some of the finest horses to have graced the Ascot turf including Tudor Minstrel (1947), Brigadier Gerard (1971), Giant’s Causeway (2000) and Rock of Gibraltar (2002), while the incomparable Frankel claimed the 2011 renewal with the hardestfought performance of his unbeaten 14-race career. Usually run on the Tuesday of Royal Ascot, the race has this year been moved to the final day in order to allow more time after the 2,000 Guineas, which was run just a fortnight ago following the resumption of British racing behind closed doors.
3.35pm
The Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
First run in 1868 and formerly known as The Cork and Orrery Stakes in honour of Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds, Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was renamed The Golden Jubilee Stakes and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. Ten years later, it naturally assumed the mantle of The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and upon the introduction of The Commonwealth Cup in 2015, the six-furlong contest became restricted to four-year-olds and upwards. In 2003, Australia’s Choisir started a trend of international winners after having won the five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes earlier in the week; there have since been victors from Hong Kong (2005, Cape Of Good Hope), Australia (2012, Black Caviar) and America (2015, Undrafted). Most recently, in a sensational renewal last year, the brilliant Blue Point became the first horse since Choisir to land the Royal Meeting’s big sprint double.
4.1 0pm
The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
Royal Ascot’s oldest handicap has long enjoyed a special place in the affections of racegoers, with a history of gambles won and lost in its frenetic closing stages. The famous sprint was first run in 1813 and is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot – the first dual winner, who triumphed in 1881 and 1882, was appropriately also named Wokingham. Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.
4.40pm
The Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions Race)
The Queen Alexandra Stakes is Royal Ascot’s traditional curtain closer. Run over two-and-three-quarter miles, it is not only the longest race of the week, but also the longest run under British Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as The Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with the legendary Brown Jack, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. In 2009, Caracciola became the oldest horse to win at Royal Ascot at the age of 12, while the 2018 winner Pallasator (second to Cleonte last year) set a new course record of 4m 45.24s over the marathon trip.

Why A Successful Royal Ascot Matters To QIPCO Our private, family run investment firm is now in its seventh year as an Official Partner of Royal Ascot; its expanding association with one of the world’s premier sporting and social events has been an immense source of pride to my brothers and I.
in Britain which acts as a stunning finale to the British Flat racing season at Ascot. Whilst losing World Champion three-year-old and Cartier Horse of the Year, Roaring Lion, to colic in New Zealand was a cruel blow to our young operation, we appreciate how fortunate we are to have his one and only crop safely on the ground. We will watch them grow and race with great anticipation, as we also watch the first European crop of our young Australian super stallion, Zoustar. Our operation is all about the future and I am assured by David Redvers that we have the most exciting group of foals this year and that Royal Ascot 2022 and 2023 will be our best yet! For it is Royal Ascot that is the beating heart of horseracing and here that we dream of breeding and leading in a winner.
QIPCO Holding, based in Doha, was established in 1999 and is considered one of the leading investment companies in Qatar. QIPCO has a diverse range of interests, including real estate, construction, oil and gas, trading and services, finance and health. In more recent years QIPCO has made a significant investment in horseracing, not only as sponsors but also as owners and breeders through our global racing and bloodstock company, Qatar Racing, a subsidiary of QIPCO. My brothers and I share a passion for horseracing and British racing in particular. In our minds, no other country can match the quality and heritage of racing as is found in Britain. This is why we choose to base our racing and breeding operations here and, through QIPCO, support the sport as an official partner of Royal Ascot. This year, we also proudly celebrate our tenth anniversary as title sponsors of British Champions Series which commenced at Newmarket and staged the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which was won by our very own Kameko. The series culminates with QIPCO British Champions Day; the richest day’s racing
It is in QIPCO’s interests that British racing is healthy and prosperous. Our ambition is to see the horses that race for Qatar Racing go on to become valuable assets, whether they be stallions or mares. The value of the horses we race and the stallions we stand is enhanced if they are competitive in what are internationally acknowledged as the best races in the world, and it is to all our advantage that through our support, the quality of racing at Royal Ascot retains that heady status. The Impact Of Coronavirus As a result of the unprecedented impact of the global coronavirus pandemic across the world in 2020, we are unable to welcome racegoers to join us for this year’s Royal Ascot. Following ongoing discussions with the UK government, racing will take place behind closed doors - with the safety of the public, staff and participating connections taking priority over everything else. We look forward to welcoming our racegoers to Royal Ascot 2021 but are pleased to be able to provide racing fans with the opportunity to watch the five-day meeting on television. Royal Ascot 2020 will go ahead across the five days originally planned, from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June inclusive. All of the historic events remain on a revised timetable, with the addition of an extra six races resulting in a total of 36 contests across the five days: seven on the first four days and eight on the final day. With racing only resuming in Great Britain on 1st June, the decision has been taken to make some changes from the traditional schedule. The St James’s Palace Stakes and The Coronation Stakes have been moved to the final day to maximise the amount of time between those races and The 2000 and 1000 Guineas, which took place on 6th and 7th June. Four of the six two-year-old races will take place on the Friday and the Saturday, providing this year’s juveniles with as much time as possible before contesting key races at Royal Ascot. All 36 races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing and 30 will be shown live on ITV1. As well as being able to watch the action live, you can join us in celebrating Royal Ascot 2020 via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels and the official Ascot app.

CATEGORIES EXPLAINED... QIPCO British Champions Series showcases 35 of the UK’s finest Flat races, and last year included three of the world’s top five contests. The Series races are contested across five different categories – sprint; middle distance; long distance; fillies & mares and kicks off with the mile division and the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
SPRINT For horseracing’s speed merchants, the Sprint category comprises two races over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and five races over 6 furlongs, including the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
MILE The Mile category kicks off with the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is followed up by the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. The category culminates in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. With prize money of £1.1 million, it is Europe’s richest mile race.
MIDDLE DISTANCE The Middle Distance division consists of a number of hugely valuable and iconic races run between 10 and 12 furlongs. Highlights from the seven-race series include the world-famous Investec Derby run at Epsom and Britain’s richest ten-furlong race, the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day.
LONG DISTANCE In the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category come the stamina-sapping races for horses that can stay the trip - the “stayers”. The category features seven races in total across the calendar including the 2 1/4 mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.
FILLIES & MARES The very best fillies and mares battle it out to become queens of this division throughout the year, with seven Group 1 races run between 8 furlongs and 12 furlongs. This kicks off with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May and culminates in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in October.

ROYAL ASCOT AT HOME By Henry Birtles, The Racing Poet It may not be the same, from much we now refrain And though we long for normal times to come around again Our challenge is adapting to hold onto what we treasure Our norms, our fun, our everydays, The things that make us…US, our ways Our business and our pleasure It may not be the same, it will not be the same, But June is here, the skies are clear, it’s Racing ’s time again Royal Ascot goes ahead, for once behind closed doors It’s thumbs up time, our sport proceeds The champion Jockeys, Noble Steeds, Assembled for The Cause Positive’s the byword; looking forward, it’s unique It will not happen every year, this one-off Ascot Week It’s screen time, Twitter, Facebook, the old Telly, Insta, Zoom Remotely party with your friends Bring what you can, the odds and ends And decorate the room StyledWithThanks, the Hashtag, is a calling to our nation, To honour those who help us, through a form of celebration To tell them that we won’t forget, for them we must campaign We’ll stay indoors, tune in and cheer We’ll drink to now and pray next year, We’ll hit the track again But now is now and now is here, a virtual life existence Two metres is the guideline, our ordered social distance So let us find it in ourselves, tear up your normal plans Enjoy it all, as if we’re there, Glad rags and hats, good times to share As Royal Ascot Fans
Our thanks goes to Henry Birtles, The Racing Poet and HBA Media, who has written this poem specifically to celebrate this year’s unique Royal Meeting.

A History Of Ascot Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters. In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find what the next chapters hold.

ONE MASTER, twice a Group 1 winner in the 7f Prix de la Foret, showed she is no slouch over 6f when there is ease in the ground when second in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint over this course and distance last October, with today’s rivals Hello Youmzain, Khaadem, Dream Of Dreams, Speak In Colours, The Tin Man (winner of this race in 2017) and Sands Of Mali behind. Dream Of Dreams was second to Blue Point in this race last year but has not reproduced that level of form since. Hello Youmzain was a good third in the Commonwealth Cup to Advertise a year ago and went on to beat a strong field in the Betfair Sprint Cup. Stewards’ Cup winner Khaadem was highly progressive last summer and had excuses afterwards. Sceptical, unraced when bought from Godolphin for peanuts last August, was winning for a fourth time from five starts for Denis Hogan when bolting up in Listed company at Naas last week but has plenty to find to justify his position at the head of the market.

He stays 6f too and can be forgiven a lacklustre return in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes when becoming unbalanced in the notorious dip at Newmarket. Bielsa, who has won four of his five races, could still be ahead of the handicapper off a mark of 101, judging by the authority with which he won on his final start at Doncaster last year. Tinto had Summerghand in second when winning at Newmarket (6f ) last time but Dazzling Dan back in ninth was consistent last year and may come on for that run for his small stable. Last year’s Ascot Stakes winner The Grand Visir looks a danger again, while the fourth then, Fun Mac, races at this meeting for the sixth consecutive year, with his second in the Ascot Stakes of 2015 his best performance. Mekong has run two good races here when second in the Listed Noel Murless Stakes in 2018 and fourth to Kew Gardens in last season’s QIPCOBritish Champions Long Distance Cup. Since then he has switched stables to Jamie Osborne and acquitted himself well on his travels at Meydan and at Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Racing Notices Position Of Stalls Straight Course - Centre Round Course - Inside Form Guide And Rating Under each horse the form is given, followed by a star rating and its official BHA Rating. The form guides and star ratings are compiled by the Racing Post. Horse Welfare At every race meeting at Ascot there are four specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses racing on these days. During each race, vets follow the horses by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is now standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. Race Information The names of probable Riders, Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions and Value of Races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are not guaranteed as correct.
