hursday is Gold Cup day at Royal Ascot with the feature race of the Royal Meeting at the heart of an excellent seven race card.

Gosden have won six of the last seven renewals between them while Frankie Dettori remains the most successful jockey in the race with eight victories.

Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and most prestigious race of the week. Run over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles it is a stiﬀ test of stamina and attracts the best staying horses from all over Europe.

The Hampton Court Stakes over 10 furlongs for three-year-olds is another high-quality race for the Classic generation. It became part of the programme in 2002 when the Royal Meeting was expanded to ﬁve days for the Golden Jubilee festivities and was brieﬂy known as the Tercentenary Stakes when Ascot celebrated its 300th anniversary.

Three varied and exciting handicaps round out the card in the shape of the Britannia Stakes over the Straight Mile, the King George V Stakes over the mile and a half trip and the Buckingham Palace Stakes over seven furlongs. The later of those returned to the programme last year and now has a permanent place on the order of running, providing those seven furlong specialists with the perfect target at Royal Ascot.

Sagaro won the race three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in the race last year. Yeats remains the benchmark though with four victories from 2006 to 2009. Elsewhere on the card, the Norfolk Stakes opens proceedings and is one

Bjorn Nielsen is visibly delighted. The owner-breeder of Stradivarius, the seven-year-old who has a shot at a record-equalling fourth Gold Cup in his sights, has just witnessed him win in the ﬂesh for the ﬁrst time since 2019.

hile the victory – a relatively comfortable one as a 4/7 odds-on favourite ahead of Ocean Wind in the Longines Sagaro Stakes and in front of only trainers and staﬀ on Royal Ascot Trials Day – will not count among his most illustrious, it was hugely important. After a 2020 in which the champion stayer triumphed in the two races which have become synonymous with his name in recent years – the Gold Cup at Ascot and the Goodwood Cup – a 7th place in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was followed by a hard run on heavy ground on QIPCO British Champions Day. But Nielsen’s superstar looked as good as ever in the Group 3 runout, as he looks ahead to hopefully equalling Yeats’ record of four victories in Royal Ascot’s oldest race on Thursday 17th June. But while Stradivarius is now arguably the most famous European horse in training, Nielsen wasn’t always convinced he would become the star he is today.

“We didn’t realise at ﬁrst that he was any good!” he admits. “During his three-yearold career I remember calling John Gosden and asking was he good enough for the King George VI Handicap at Royal Ascot. He said that’s quite a lot of weight for him – maybe we should aim him at the Queen’s Vase.”

t all started at the Badminton Horse Trials. My father was the Royal Correspondent for the Daily Mirror and I would go with him to watch the Royals at play.

My interest was photography and a kind hearted photographer , Tim Graham, lent me a Nikon F2 with a 180mm f2.8 lens and positioned me by the water jump. Fortunately for me when it was Princess Anne's turn, she was unseated and fell oﬀ her mount. It earned me £30 and set me on my way in newspaper photography. I joined the newly started Racing Post in 1987 and am still working for them. I have won numerous awards for my work. the Royal Ascot Insider

illinery is best described as the design, making and trimming of ladies’ hats. The word ‘milliner’ goes way back to 16th century Italy and is borrowed from the word ‘Milaner’ (someone from Milan), referring to the Milanese merchants who sold fancy bonnets, gloves, jewellery and cutlery.

More than a century later bonnets took pride of place and ‘millinery’ became a chosen profession. Soon straw braid became ‘the material’ for beautiful hats, creating such a demand that schools were set up across Europe to teach young girls how to plait the straw. With the invention of the 10-guinea sewing machine in the mid-1870s (followed by the 17-guinea model, still used by milliners today), hat making was transformed. We all remember the Royal Ascot scene from the film My Fair Lady showing Audrey Hepburn in classic black and white wearing a spectacular swept brimmed hat with all the trimmings, designed by Cecil Beaton. The industry was buzzing, as hats became a focal point of fashion, and the skills of the milliner were extended as new materials came into the workroom. Horsehair trims were developed in Switzerland, and beautiful ribbons in the finest silk were produced in France. Intricate straw braids were imported from Italy, whilst sisal and buntal straw grown in the Philippines and woven into bell-shaped hoods in China – called parisisal and parabuntal

– would revolutionise the industry. Until China began producing a far cheaper braid, Dunstable had been the centre for woven braid in England. In nearby Luton they began making and trimming ladies’ hats not in factories but in the houses of its skilled population. 3) PIC OF MILLINERS AT A TABLE FINISHING BOATERS 4) THE BLOCKING ROOM WAS HEAVY WORK, UNDERTAKEN BY THE MEN IN THE FACTORY (See previous page) When the House of Dior presented the ‘New Look’ and the ‘Bar’ suit in 1947, fashion and millinery were transformed. Each season in Paris, the House of Dior would show the new collection to licensees including those from the world’s most exclusive millinery establishments. New styles would be selected and bought as sparterie shapes to be taken back to the licensee’s atelier. The designer would design trims in the mood of the collection to be ‘replicated’ within their establishments. Milliners sat beside long tables with ‘La Première’ at the head to correct any ‘deviations the Royal Ascot Insider

or bad workmanship’ at a stroke. The copies, completed with the Dior label, would then be sold at wholesale prices to the large stores and selected millinery shops. At the same time, factories were set up in Luton for mass production. They were ready and able to ‘rework’ any new design they saw and repeat these in a simpler and cheaper version for the mass market. Representatives were sent oﬀ throughout Europe and beyond, as large companies exhibited at international trade shows. The orders for Luton-made headwear were enormous, reaching a peak of 70 millions hats per year. Hundreds of outworkers were employed, especially skilled milliners who were highly valued. By the 1950s over half of the town was working for the hat industry, and such was its eﬀect that they named the Luton football team ‘the Hatters’. Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy had learnt their craft from Shirley Hex, a couture milliner with couturier Lachasse. At London College of Fashion, Paris-trained Mme Marie O’Regan taught high-level millinery,

It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. t all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the ﬁrst horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identiﬁed as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.

That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s ﬁrst four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters.

Legendary ownerbreeder Prince Khalid Abdullah died aged 83 at the beginning of this year. His legacy in the sport stretches far and wide with his famous green, white and pink silks carried to victory by so many of the sport’s great horses.

Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

Masterful Chef Michelin-starred chef Ollie Dabbous reveals what he’ll be serving at Royal Ascot’s The Wolferton this year – and why he closed three kitchens to open a three-venue restaurant in Piccadilly

ow does a Michelin-starred chef who runs one of London’s biggest West End restaurants, the renowned HIDE, go about preparing a menu to serve at Royal Ascot? It’s simple, really: don’t think like a chef, think like a customer. “I wouldn’t serve a prawn cocktail at HIDE but I would at Ascot. I wouldn’t order one at HIDE, I’d love to eat it at Ascot,” Ollie Dabbous explains. “You’re part of an occasion and you need to make that occasion as memorable and as enjoyable as possible. So there’ll be my style of cooking there, but also, there’ll be things that might not be what I traditionally cook but what I would, as a customer, love to eat in that scenario.”

Dabbous is heading up The Wolferton, a new restaurant situated within the Queen Anne Enclosure where guests at Royal Ascot can enjoy a private table catered for by either a generous array of chef’s stations or an elegant threecourse menu designed by Dabbous himself. Diners opting for the former can expect top class traditional fare – “crowd pleasers” Dabbous explains – with a seafood platter and – yes! – a prawn cocktail available from the seafood station; a duo of antipasti boards at the deli station, with fennel seed salami and potted chicken in the meat option, and grilled asparagus and a Batavia lettuce and chive wrap in the vegetarian; as well as a sumptuous choice of meat dishes at the carvery, either roast dry aged sirloin of beef or crispy Middlewhite pork belly, both served with summer vegetables and Jersey Royals dripping in butter. Those that select Ollie’s specially designed menu however, can expect something a little different; dishes he describes as “a bit closer to what we do at HIDE”. One of the starters centres around a ripe tomato, marinated with basil and white balsamic, filled with pesto and stracciatella. The other is a “summery” option – glazed roast duck, with a beetroot, blackberry, hazelnut and tarragon pistou. For the main course, it’s roasted sea bream, with a smoked aubergine and a pine nut praline, and a baked candystriped beetroot and fig dish for the vegetarian choice, with marigold and an almond milk, coconut, lemongrass and ginger sauce, alongside a serving

There, he worked alongside the main man, and also his executive chef, Gary Jones. “[Jones is] an amazing chef and he taught me the importance of [having] that level of organisation needed to execute what we hope is as close to perfection as can be,” Dabbous says. “I went into Le Manoir ambitious and maybe with some potential, but utterly green. I think my four years there really forged me. I never went to catering college and that was probably the [single], most important and best decision that I made.” 58

In the years that followed, Dabbous worked at Claude Bosi’s Hibiscus in Ludlow, before moving to San Sebastián in Spain for a stint at Mugaritz – now ranked among the 50 best restaurants in the world. He later returned to London to take up his ﬁrst head chef position at Texture – alongside Agnar Sverrisson – but it wasn’t long before he decided to go it alone. I thought the food was good enough, but it was deliberately quite antiestablishment in its DNA.” “On the day, I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to,” he continues. “I had one person phone in sick and […] the electrics had gone down, so I was spending more time on the phone to the electrician that day, trying to beg him to come in, than anything else!” He launched two more ventures, Barnyard and Henrietta, but in 2017 was approached to head up HIDE on Piccadilly – a mammoth enterprise, including two restaurants (HIDE Above and HIDE Ground), a bar and private dining space, run by an army of staﬀ (120 to be precise) who deliver up to 600 covers a day. He closed all three of his kitchens for the role. “I needed all the talent to be in one place,” he says of the decision. “It’s just the biggest mistake that I used to read about growing up – chefs expanding too fast or doing too much. I think I’d rather have one place that was really, really incredible than multiple [places] that frustrated me because they weren’t everything that I wanted them to be.” His dedication paid oﬀ; since its launch, HIDE has wowed diners and critics alike and earned Dabbous the second Michelin star of his career. “I’m never looking to do an empire of restaurants, to me that sounds like one big nosebleed,” he says. “I would rather do less and do it better. Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum at Royal Ascot

n 2020 he was crowned leading owner at Royal Ascot for the first time with six individual winners, all partnered by his retained jockey Jim Crowley. His final winner at the Royal Meeting was Khaloosy, trained by Roger Varian, which took is total number of Royal Ascot winners to 46. The first of those came in 1985 when Al Bahathri won the Coronation Stakes. Sent off the 4/6 favourite she stumbled on the turn for home but jockey Tony Murray managed to get her balanced again and she won by a length for trainer Henry Thomson Jones. After retiring in July 2017 and a spell at the National Stud, Julie made the journey to Newmarket to collect him and take him home to Naseby in Northamptonshire, to live with her other horse, Dazzle.

“It is still early days,” says Julie, “but he seems to have plenty of potential for dressage.” He is competed by local dressage rider, Sarah Kempson and although lockdown has meant limited outings, Trip to Paris has been competing in online RoR dressage classes with success.

Oppenheimer’s initial Royal Ascot star fillies were in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes over one mile with Rebecca Sharp victorious in 1997 for trainer Geoff Wragg and jockey Michael Hills. Two years later Wragg and Oppenheimer teamed up with Balisada, this time with Michael Roberts in the saddle. Latterly, it has been in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes where the Hascombe and Valiant fillies have made their mark. In 2019, it was Star Catcher who was successful for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori, embarking on a winning run that encompassed the Group 1 Irish Oaks and Prix Vermeille, and culminated in a return to Ascot for victory in the Group 1 QIPCO British Champions’ Fillies and Mares’ Stakes. Last year, Frankly Darling was the trio’s representative and provided them with back-to-back Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes triumphs. STORY

Caroline was just seven when she was diagnosed with a rare, inoperable cancer; a stage four tumour in her head.

ithin a week of the diagnosis, Caroline began a gruelling schedule of treatment including nine rounds of chemotherapy and proton beam radiotherapy in the US, over a nine-week period.

‘No-one should ever have to hear the words your child has cancer’ That’s where the Fund stepped in. Mum Lucy was at home full-time and the extra grant meant the family could ‘enjoy’ a more comfortable stay while in the US. While the NHS funded Caroline’s treatment and accommodation, the grant from the Fund allowed Dad Michael and Lucy to indulge Caroline’s every whim, especially where food was concerned, to keep her eating. The family also enjoyed day trips out when there were no hospital appointments to attend, thanks to the support of the Fund. Michael said: “Without the money rom the Fund we would have been able to

survive but it allowed us to do things we wouldn’t have otherwise done.” Caroline has now been in remission for three years and has returned to school. Race Summary: It’s some buzz to watch Stradivarius and he is the thoroughly proven class act in this field but his superiority on current evidence is nothing like as big as his winning margin in this race last term and this promises to be a competitive renewal, with several rivals who are not so far off him on form and could take a step forward faced with this test for the first time. There is always the chance with him of trouble in running as well. Consequently, it may well prove better to cheer than to back him at the likely very short odds and an appealing each-way alternative is TWILIGHT PAYMENT. Race Summary: Aldaary has to be respected after a highly impressive win against his own age group here in May and Lord Campari is also right up the list at this more realistic level. There are some slight queries about the tried-and-trusted course specialists Blue Mist, Raising Sand and Documenting but in-form Boardman, Persuasion and Karibana have big runs in them.

What is your favourite Royal Ascot memory so far? Always tricky as its always your ﬁrst win always sticks in your mind and I was lucky enough to ride two more straight after which was a lot to take in. I would have to say Big Orange winning the Gold Cup was absolutely incredible, the atmosphere afterwards was very special and something I will remember for a long time. The race you would most like to win this week? There are so many I would want to win but thinking about stallions and going forward I would have to say the St James’s Palace, I have been lucky enough to win it a couple of times already. If you could pick one horse to ride that you are not currently booked for, which horse would you choose and why? Lord North in the Prince of Wales’s. I was lucky to pick up the ride and win on him last year and he goes into the meeting after a very impressive win in the Dubai Turf and I think he will be the one to beat. Frankie has broken down on the way to Royal Ascot, do you:• Reroute and go and pick him up • Quickly get on the phone to your agent to offer your services for his rides I would have to pick him up. A couple of years ago when Frankie was injured I was lucky enough to pick up some of his rides including Big Orange so I owe it to him to pick him up. If you could pick to ride one Royal Ascot winner from the history books which horse would you pick and in which race? The 2011 St James’s Palace riding Frankel. You are able to invite five famous guests to Royal Ascot, who would you invite (past or present)? Peter Jones from Dragons’ Den so he can give me some ideas of what to do when I stop riding. Gordon Ramsay as I enjoy watching his shows, his straight-talking manor and his quick wit are brilliant. Elon Musk as it would be good to know what he thinks the world will be like in 25 years from now, although he may be a little boring. John Magnier as I would love to listen to his expert knowledge on our wonderful sport Sir Henry Cecil – no explanation needed… What is the last thing that goes through your mind when the starter is about to drop his flag? It all depends on the horse I am riding. I think about the tactics I want to employ and I am focused on getting all the little things right to give myself the best chance of winning. Do you have any raceday superstitions? If I have ridden a big winner on a horse before I try and keep everything the same, the equipment, the suit I wore on the day to the races, including the tie and shoes. Cream or jam first on a scone? I am not a massive fan of scones but if I had to eat one I would go cream first then jam. What makes Royal Ascot special? When you ride a winner there it is a feeling like no other. It is the Olympics of our sport. It just has everything, top quality racing, big crowds and an amazing atmosphere.
