hursday is Gold Cup day at Royal Ascot with the feature race of the Royal Meeting at the heart of an excellent seven race card.
of the premier two-yearold races of the week. Promoted to Group 2 status in 2006, it is run over the shortest trip possible of five furlongs and is all about speed.
Gosden have won six of the last seven renewals between them while Frankie Dettori remains the most successful jockey in the race with eight victories.
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and most prestigious race of the week. Run over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles it is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the best staying horses from all over Europe.
The Hampton Court Stakes over 10 furlongs for three-year-olds is another high-quality race for the Classic generation. It became part of the programme in 2002 when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days for the Golden Jubilee festivities and was briefly known as the Tercentenary Stakes when Ascot celebrated its 300th anniversary.
Three varied and exciting handicaps round out the card in the shape of the Britannia Stakes over the Straight Mile, the King George V Stakes over the mile and a half trip and the Buckingham Palace Stakes over seven furlongs. The later of those returned to the programme last year and now has a permanent place on the order of running, providing those seven furlong specialists with the perfect target at Royal Ascot.
Sagaro won the race three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in the race last year. Yeats remains the benchmark though with four victories from 2006 to 2009. Elsewhere on the card, the Norfolk Stakes opens proceedings and is one
The Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes is also for three-year-olds, although restricted to fillies and run over the same trip as the Oaks. Aidan O’Brien and John

Bjorn Nielsen
Bjorn Nielsen is visibly delighted. The owner-breeder of Stradivarius, the seven-year-old who has a shot at a record-equalling fourth Gold Cup in his sights, has just witnessed him win in the flesh for the first time since 2019.

hile the victory – a relatively comfortable one as a 4/7 odds-on favourite ahead of Ocean Wind in the Longines Sagaro Stakes and in front of only trainers and staff on Royal Ascot Trials Day – will not count among his most illustrious, it was hugely important. After a 2020 in which the champion stayer triumphed in the two races which have become synonymous with his name in recent years – the Gold Cup at Ascot and the Goodwood Cup – a 7th place in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was followed by a hard run on heavy ground on QIPCO British Champions Day. But Nielsen’s superstar looked as good as ever in the Group 3 runout, as he looks ahead to hopefully equalling Yeats’ record of four victories in Royal Ascot’s oldest race on Thursday 17th June. But while Stradivarius is now arguably the most famous European horse in training, Nielsen wasn’t always convinced he would become the star he is today.
the Royal Ascot Insider
“We didn’t realise at first that he was any good!” he admits. “During his three-yearold career I remember calling John Gosden and asking was he good enough for the King George VI Handicap at Royal Ascot. He said that’s quite a lot of weight for him – maybe we should aim him at the Queen’s Vase.”
“Anyway, he duly came to Ascot and won the Queen’s Vase in 2016.. So I thought he was okay – he was a nice horse." “Anyway, he duly came to Ascot and won the Queen’s Vase in 2016.” “So I thought he was okay – he was a nice horse. Then John’s Secretary Peter Shoemark had an idea and said ‘why don’t we run him in the Goodwood Cup?’ He ran there without a penalty against [Gold Cup winner] Big Orange, and won quite comfortably – so that day I thought to myself there may be a changing of the guard in the staying division... “That’s when I first realised really.”

“There was no Yorkshire Cup, so he went to the Coronation Cup [finishing 5th over 1m 4f]. He ran a great race, but it was only 13 days before the Gold Cup, which was a slight concern.” And the lack of preparation wasn’t Nielsen’s only concern ahead of the 2020 race. “It rained… a lot! And he’s not a soft ground horse, he prefers it fast.” But on the day, that seemed to make little difference, as, while Nielsen and the rest of the world watched on TV,

somewhere else, would he have been the horse he is today? And I honestly think John Gosden gets his horses ready for these big occasions – he’s a master, he’s been doing it for a long, long time. “His influence has been immense.” And as for the jockey whose love for Stradivarius is evident every time they get together? “Frankie suits the horse so well,” Nielsen adds. “He doesn’t make mistakes – he’s just a great, great jockey.”

illinery is best described as the design, making and trimming of ladies’ hats. The word ‘milliner’ goes way back to 16th century Italy and is borrowed from the word ‘Milaner’ (someone from Milan), referring to the Milanese merchants who sold fancy bonnets, gloves, jewellery and cutlery.
More than a century later bonnets took pride of place and ‘millinery’ became a chosen profession. Soon straw braid became ‘the material’ for beautiful hats, creating such a demand that schools were set up across Europe to teach young girls how to plait the straw. With the invention of the 10-guinea sewing machine in the mid-1870s (followed by the 17-guinea model, still used by milliners today), hat making was transformed. Intricate designs were developed, fuelling the demand to provide the raw material to supply the growing industry. 1) PHOTO OF YOUNG GIRLS AT BRAID SCHOOL Credit: Photo from the Bassenge School of Plaiting in Belgium as seen at the local Musée d’Eben (Straw Museum), from an article 28
in Issue 37 of The HAT Archive. 2) PHOTO OF A WORKROOM IN LUTON Show milliners sewing the braid whilst others are finishing the hats, on 10-gineau machines By the early 1900s extravagance was de rigueur, with wide brims and oversized crowns piled high with exaggerated trims of ostrich feathers, floral bouquets and satin bows. We all remember the Royal Ascot scene from the film My Fair Lady showing Audrey Hepburn in classic black and white wearing a spectacular swept brimmed hat with all the trimmings, designed by Cecil Beaton. The industry was buzzing, as hats became a focal point of fashion, and the skills of the milliner were extended as new materials came into the workroom. Horsehair trims were developed in Switzerland, and beautiful ribbons in the finest silk were produced in France. Intricate straw braids were imported from Italy, whilst sisal and buntal straw grown in the Philippines and woven into bell-shaped hoods in China – called parisisal and parabuntal

– would revolutionise the industry. Until China began producing a far cheaper braid, Dunstable had been the centre for woven braid in England. In nearby Luton they began making and trimming ladies’ hats not in factories but in the houses of its skilled population. 3) PIC OF MILLINERS AT A TABLE FINISHING BOATERS 4) THE BLOCKING ROOM WAS HEAVY WORK, UNDERTAKEN BY THE MEN IN THE FACTORY (See previous page) When the House of Dior presented the ‘New Look’ and the ‘Bar’ suit in 1947, fashion and millinery were transformed. Each season in Paris, the House of Dior would show the new collection to licensees including those from the world’s most exclusive millinery establishments. New styles would be selected and bought as sparterie shapes to be taken back to the licensee’s atelier. The designer would design trims in the mood of the collection to be ‘replicated’ within their establishments. Milliners sat beside long tables with ‘La Première’ at the head to correct any ‘deviations the Royal Ascot Insider
or bad workmanship’ at a stroke. The copies, completed with the Dior label, would then be sold at wholesale prices to the large stores and selected millinery shops. At the same time, factories were set up in Luton for mass production. They were ready and able to ‘rework’ any new design they saw and repeat these in a simpler and cheaper version for the mass market. Representatives were sent off throughout Europe and beyond, as large companies exhibited at international trade shows. The orders for Luton-made headwear were enormous, reaching a peak of 70 millions hats per year. Hundreds of outworkers were employed, especially skilled milliners who were highly valued. By the 1950s over half of the town was working for the hat industry, and such was its effect that they named the Luton football team ‘the Hatters’. A History Of
Ascot
Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. 42

t all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.
That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters.
middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the starstudded championship finale to the Flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find out what the next chapters hold. A History Of Ascot

hose horses often came to the fore at Royal Ascot with the likes of Kingman, Byword, Banks Hill, Danehill and of course the incomparable Frankel carrying his colours to victory.
Prince Khalid Abdullah owned 41 Royal Ascot winners in total, starting with Abeer in the 1979 Queen Mary Stakes, his first Group winner. That was just two years after he purchased his first yearlings which kick-started his plans for @ascotracecourse |
what would become an international breeding operation. The Royal Ascot winners flowed fairly regularly from the early 1980s, including a remarkable six at the 1989 Royal Meeting. They included several of the highest profile races with Warning in the Queen Anne Stakes, Two Timing in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Danehill in the then Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Diamond Jubilee Stakes).

Frankel
Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

He returned a year later as a four-year-old to contest the Queen Anne Stakes and produced one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Positioned perfectly behind his pace maker, Bullet Train, Queally edged Frankel to the front from the halfway point before he opened up in stunning style to produce a brilliant 11 length victory. Frankel continues to have an impact on the sport through his progeny and he recorded a first Royal Ascot winner as a sire when Without Parole won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018
James Doyle. Retired at three, Kingman has since produced three Royal Ascot winners himself in Palace Pier as well as Sangarius and Calyx in the Juddmonte colours, so his legacy lives on and will continue to grow.

while Monarchs Glen won the Wolferton Stakes that same year in Prince Khalid’s silks. Just two years after Frankel, Prince Khalid had another star on his hands in Kingman. Agonisingly beaten in the 2,000 Guineas, he set the record straight at Royal Ascot when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes in devastating fashion under
In total, Prince Khalid recorded more than 500 Group level victories around the world, including 118 at Group 1 level with five of those coming at Royal Ascot. His colours continue to be carried under the Juddmonte name and no doubt there will be many more Royal Ascot victories to celebrate.

Masterful Chef Michelin-starred chef Ollie Dabbous reveals what he’ll be serving at Royal Ascot’s The Wolferton this year – and why he closed three kitchens to open a three-venue restaurant in Piccadilly
H
ow does a Michelin-starred chef who runs one of London’s biggest West End restaurants, the renowned HIDE, go about preparing a menu to serve at Royal Ascot? It’s simple, really: don’t think like a chef, think like a customer. “I wouldn’t serve a prawn cocktail at HIDE but I would at Ascot. I wouldn’t order one at HIDE, I’d love to eat it at Ascot,” Ollie Dabbous explains. “You’re part of an occasion and you need to make that occasion as memorable and as enjoyable as possible. So there’ll be my style of cooking there, but also, there’ll be things that might not be what I traditionally cook but what I would, as a customer, love to eat in that scenario.”
the Royal Ascot Insider
Dabbous is heading up The Wolferton, a new restaurant situated within the Queen Anne Enclosure where guests at Royal Ascot can enjoy a private table catered for by either a generous array of chef’s stations or an elegant threecourse menu designed by Dabbous himself. Diners opting for the former can expect top class traditional fare – “crowd pleasers” Dabbous explains – with a seafood platter and – yes! – a prawn cocktail available from the seafood station; a duo of antipasti boards at the deli station, with fennel seed salami and potted chicken in the meat option, and grilled asparagus and a Batavia lettuce and chive wrap in the vegetarian; as well as a sumptuous choice of meat dishes at the carvery, either roast dry aged sirloin of beef or crispy Middlewhite pork belly, both served with summer vegetables and Jersey Royals dripping in butter. Those that select Ollie’s specially designed menu however, can expect something a little different; dishes he describes as “a bit closer to what we do at HIDE”. One of the starters centres around a ripe tomato, marinated with basil and white balsamic, filled with pesto and stracciatella. The other is a “summery” option – glazed roast duck, with a beetroot, blackberry, hazelnut and tarragon pistou. For the main course, it’s roasted sea bream, with a smoked aubergine and a pine nut praline, and a baked candystriped beetroot and fig dish for the vegetarian choice, with marigold and an almond milk, coconut, lemongrass and ginger sauce, alongside a serving

There, he worked alongside the main man, and also his executive chef, Gary Jones. “[Jones is] an amazing chef and he taught me the importance of [having] that level of organisation needed to execute what we hope is as close to perfection as can be,” Dabbous says. “I went into Le Manoir ambitious and maybe with some potential, but utterly green. I think my four years there really forged me. I never went to catering college and that was probably the [single], most important and best decision that I made.” 58

In the years that followed, Dabbous worked at Claude Bosi’s Hibiscus in Ludlow, before moving to San Sebastián in Spain for a stint at Mugaritz – now ranked among the 50 best restaurants in the world. He later returned to London to take up his first head chef position at Texture – alongside Agnar Sverrisson – but it wasn’t long before he decided to go it alone. He opened Dabbous in Mayfair in 2012, and eight months later, was awarded a Michelin star. “It was amazing because it was such a stripped back restaurant,” Dabbous says. “I wasn’t sure if we’d win one or not. @ascotracecourse | #RoyalAscot

I thought the food was good enough, but it was deliberately quite antiestablishment in its DNA.” “On the day, I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to,” he continues. “I had one person phone in sick and […] the electrics had gone down, so I was spending more time on the phone to the electrician that day, trying to beg him to come in, than anything else!” He launched two more ventures, Barnyard and Henrietta, but in 2017 was approached to head up HIDE on Piccadilly – a mammoth enterprise, including two restaurants (HIDE Above and HIDE Ground), a bar and private dining space, run by an army of staff (120 to be precise) who deliver up to 600 covers a day. He closed all three of his kitchens for the role. “I needed all the talent to be in one place,” he says of the decision. “It’s just the biggest mistake that I used to read about growing up – chefs expanding too fast or doing too much. I think I’d rather have one place that was really, really incredible than multiple [places] that frustrated me because they weren’t everything that I wanted them to be.” His dedication paid off; since its launch, HIDE has wowed diners and critics alike and earned Dabbous the second Michelin star of his career. “I’m never looking to do an empire of restaurants, to me that sounds like one big nosebleed,” he says. “I would rather do less and do it better. For me, the diversity comes in doing events like Ascot.” And so, to the races. As the week approaches, what in particular is Dabbous looking forward to? “Seeing the Royal Ascot Insider

that celebration,” he replies. “People have been living in their own living rooms for the last year and not getting dressed up. So I think just seeing a celebration en mass will be the most […] heartening thing to see.” He also hopes he will find time to enjoy a drink with his former boss, Raymond Blanc, who will also be cooking at Royal Ascot this year. “He invested in my first restaurant, came to my wedding, he’s a bit like an uncle to me, he’s incredibly supportive… I feel really proud to be cooking at an event alongside him,” Dabbous says. “We don’t have a lot of time to catch up, we’re both pretty busy in our respective kitchens, so it would just be nice to try and grab a glass of Champagne with him at some point.” @ascotracecourse | #RoyalAscot

Embraer Praetor 600 Combines Technology, Efficiency and Performance
The new Embraer Praetor 600 doesn’t just raise the bar for performance in the super-midsize class of private aircraft, it redefines what a super-midsize aircraft should be.

F
rom its intercontinental range and smooth fly-by-wire controls to its ergonomic seating and ultra-quiet environment, the Praetor 600 provides passengers with the comforts of a large cabin aircraft in a more agile package. This agility is a key differentiator for the Praetor 600. While the aircraft is equipped with the same Honeywell HTF7500E engines as its predecessor, the Legacy 500, Embraer added a software update to the Praetor 600 that boosts thrust by nearly 500 pounds. The Praetor 600 also features a new winglet design that increases wingspan and improves airflow. When combined with advancements in the cockpit, these power and structural upgrades give the Praetor 600 exceptional short-field performance. That means it can go to places other super-midsize aircraft can’t go to, including some of the world’s most challenging airports in city centers and mountainous regions such as London City or La Mole in South of France. This ultimately puts passengers closer to their destinations and substantially reduces transit time. No matter where they are flying, Praetor 600 passengers benefit from Embraer’s Active Turbulence Reduction, the first system of its kind ever fitted to a super-midsize aircraft. Active Turbulence Reduction is made possible because of the Praetor 600’s full fly-by-wire controls. It automatically senses and dampens the effects of turbulence, providing a smoother ride that is more conducive to relaxing or working. The Active Turbulence Reduction system also helps make the Praetor 600 the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its class. The Praetor 600 is so efficient that it can
the Royal Ascot Insider
fly nonstop from London to Muscat or New York to Geneva on one tank of fuel, something that cannot be done in other super-midsize aircraft like the Bombardier Challenger 350. This fuel efficiency also allows passengers to fly knowing they have chosen an industry leader in sustainability for their travel needs. In fact, Embraer designed the Praetor 600 using its DIPAS (Integrated Development of Environmentally Sustainable Products) methodology, which evaluates a product’s sustainability for its entire lifecycle. Under this programme, technologies that reduce fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and noise are favoured for further development. In the cabin, the Praetor 600 is equipped with class-exclusive Viasat Kaband and Gogo AVANCE L5 high-speed Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected to the world below them. Also, classexclusive in the Praetor 600 is Embraer’s touchscreen Upper Tech Panel that displays flight information and cabin management controls in an elegant, unobtrusive manner. Flexjet clients who fly on the new Praetor 600 can relax in a custom Red Label by Flexjet cabin knowing that an additional HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of all particles in the air, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. These exceptional features and capabilities make the Praetor 600 a truly unique, groundbreaking aircraft. It rises above everything else in the traditional super-midsize category, while also offering better short field performance than large cabin aircraft. That’s why Flexjet is proud to make this aircraft available as part of our European fleet.

n 2020 he was crowned leading owner at Royal Ascot for the first time with six individual winners, all partnered by his retained jockey Jim Crowley. His final winner at the Royal Meeting was Khaloosy, trained by Roger Varian, which took is total number of Royal Ascot winners to 46. The first of those came in 1985 when Al Bahathri won the Coronation Stakes. Sent off the 4/6 favourite she stumbled on the turn for home but jockey Tony Murray managed to get her balanced again and she won by a length for trainer Henry Thomson Jones. Retraining of Racehorses

Trip to Paris pulled out all the stops to win the 2015 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, a day his syndicate of owners will never forget. Owned by the La Grange Partnership since his purchase by Ed Dunlop at a twoyear-old, it is somewhat fitting that one of those syndicate members who travelled the world to watch him race - ended up owning him outright in his retirement. 70

Oppenheimer’s initial Royal Ascot star fillies were in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes over one mile with Rebecca Sharp victorious in 1997 for trainer Geoff Wragg and jockey Michael Hills. Two years later Wragg and Oppenheimer teamed up with Balisada, this time with Michael Roberts in the saddle. Latterly, it has been in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes where the Hascombe and Valiant fillies have made their mark. In 2019, it was Star Catcher who was successful for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori, embarking on a winning run that encompassed the Group 1 Irish Oaks and Prix Vermeille, and culminated in a return to Ascot for victory in the Group 1 QIPCO British Champions’ Fillies and Mares’ Stakes. Last year, Frankly Darling was the trio’s representative and provided them with back-to-back Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes triumphs. In the higgledypiggledy world of the coronavirus pandemic, Royal Ascot came before the Oaks, and Frankly @ascotracecourse |
Darling went on to be third in that Classic. What links the two races, and the Hascombe and Valiant victories, is genetics: Rebecca Sharp is a half-sister to Hidden Hope, herself winner of the Listed Cheshire Oaks, who is the dam of Frankly Darling, a daughter of the outstanding Frankel, also a dual Royal Ascot winner. Rebecca Sharp and Hidden Hope also happen to be half-sisters to Fleche d’Or, the dam of one of the best horses bred and raced by Anthony Oppenheimer; the 2015 Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes winner, Golden Horn.
‘It is very special to win at Royal Ascot with horses that you have bred and have had their families for generations. Race Summary: In what looks an open renewal of this Group 2, the suggestion is CADAMOSTO, who came away nicely on his Dundalk debut in April and can provide Aidan O’Brien with a third win in this since 2015. Wesley Ward is another who has twice tasted success in this in recent years so his pair Lucci (second on the list) and Nakatomi, who both won on debut in the USA, merit plenty of respect. This a big jump in class for Perfect Power but he was impressive at Hamilton last week and is one who could go well at likely bigger odds. Race Predictor: SECOND WIND LITTLE EARL GO BEARS GO

Race Summary: The Musidora form received a major boost when the winner Snowfall romped to victory in the Oaks, and NOON STAR is the selection having been a near-4l second at York. This blue-blooded filly is open to further improvement for Sir Michael Stoute, especially now upped to 1m4f. Divinely may have been second (albeit a distant one) in the Oaks granted a more favourable passage and Aidan O’Brien’s sole representative is feared most. Like O’Brien, the Gosden stable has a fine recent record in this race and the very lightly raced Gloria Mundi is next on the list. Eshaada narrowly beat Frankie Dettori’s mount at Newbury last time and is also respected. Race Predictor: DUBAI FOUNTAIN NOON STAR DIVINELY

Race Summary: It’s some buzz to watch Stradivarius and he is the thoroughly proven class act in this field but his superiority on current evidence is nothing like as big as his winning margin in this race last term and this promises to be a competitive renewal, with several rivals who are not so far off him on form and could take a step forward faced with this test for the first time. There is always the chance with him of trouble in running as well. Consequently, it may well prove better to cheer than to back him at the likely very short odds and an appealing each-way alternative is TWILIGHT PAYMENT. The Irish 8yo has been around the block even more times than Stradivarius but winning last year’s Melbourne Cup reiterated what he can do over 2m and he’s long looked a strong candidate for even further. Subjectivist, Trueshan and Spanish Mission are all major players, while the German-trained Rip Van Lips might just be a surprise package. Race Summary: This presents the typical Britannia conundrum with potential Group horses lurking within the shadows. The suggestion is MITHRAS, who appeared to be going places before failing to do himself justice at Listed level last time and should thrive in this very different environment. John and Thady Gosden also saddle Emperor Spirit, for whom Ripon last time did not go to plan and whose current mark may underestimate his ability. Jamie Spencer will no doubt play it late aboard Air To Air and he’s definite shortlist material together with Raadobarg, while the Sir Mark Prescott factor heightens interest in Royal Pleasure. At greater odds, Summa Peto could also have some say.

Race Summary: It will be fascinating to see how strong Sir Lamorak is in the market, after he temporarily had a high profile for the Derby when due to run in the Chester Vase. Nagano could be a big improver but there’s a question of whether he is street-wise enough to overcome possible trouble in running from an inside stall. Tashkhan, drawn 1, has stacks of potential at the other end of the weights. SURREY GOLD, contrastingly, is drawn very wide and that has often proved an advantage in this race. With rain forecast for Wednesday night, he is selected to follow up his stylish win at Newbury, with Sir Lamorak the most likely danger. Surefire and Soapy Stevens are others to note. Race Predictor: SIR WILLIAM BRUCE

BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HH Went handicapping off a low mark and took full advantage with four 7f wins on turf and AW in second half of 2020; has come on again this season, impressive from the front at Haydock (7f, soft) and no disgrace when nailed late on by Karibana on AW three days later; never better but she is another 4lb higher here. Race Summary: Aldaary has to be respected after a highly impressive win against his own age group here in May and Lord Campari is also right up the list at this more realistic level. The more seasoned DANYAH looks interesting back at 7f, though, as a strongly run race at this trip could be ideal after two solid form efforts in good 1m handicaps. There are some slight queries about the tried-and-trusted course specialists Blue Mist, Raising Sand and Documenting but in-form Boardman, Persuasion and Karibana have big runs in them.

What is your favourite Royal Ascot memory so far? Always tricky as its always your first win always sticks in your mind and I was lucky enough to ride two more straight after which was a lot to take in. I would have to say Big Orange winning the Gold Cup was absolutely incredible, the atmosphere afterwards was very special and something I will remember for a long time. The race you would most like to win this week? There are so many I would want to win but thinking about stallions and going forward I would have to say the St James’s Palace, I have been lucky enough to win it a couple of times already. If you could pick one horse to ride that you are not currently booked for, which horse would you choose and why? Lord North in the Prince of Wales’s. I was lucky to pick up the ride and win on him last year and he goes into the meeting after a very impressive win in the Dubai Turf and I think he will be the one to beat. Frankie has broken down on the way to Royal Ascot, do you:• Reroute and go and pick him up • Quickly get on the phone to your agent to offer your services for his rides I would have to pick him up. A couple of years ago when Frankie was injured I was lucky enough to pick up some of his rides including Big Orange so I owe it to him to pick him up. If you could pick to ride one Royal Ascot winner from the history books which horse would you pick and in which race? The 2011 St James’s Palace riding Frankel. I would of loved to experienced the power he had, he was the ultimate racehorse. the Royal Ascot Insider

You are able to invite five famous guests to Royal Ascot, who would you invite (past or present)? Peter Jones from Dragons’ Den so he can give me some ideas of what to do when I stop riding. Gordon Ramsay as I enjoy watching his shows, his straight-talking manor and his quick wit are brilliant. Elon Musk as it would be good to know what he thinks the world will be like in 25 years from now, although he may be a little boring. John Magnier as I would love to listen to his expert knowledge on our wonderful sport Sir Henry Cecil – no explanation needed… What is the last thing that goes through your mind when the starter is about to drop his flag? It all depends on the horse I am riding. I think about the tactics I want to employ and I am focused on getting all the little things right to give myself the best chance of winning. Do you have any raceday superstitions? If I have ridden a big winner on a horse before I try and keep everything the same, the equipment, the suit I wore on the day to the races, including the tie and shoes. Cream or jam first on a scone? I am not a massive fan of scones but if I had to eat one I would go cream first then jam. What makes Royal Ascot special? When you ride a winner there it is a feeling like no other. It is the Olympics of our sport. It just has everything, top quality racing, big crowds and an amazing atmosphere.
